OpenSUSE Install :: Supported By The Drivers Included In The 11.4 DVD?
Mar 7, 2011
Is there a way to determine which devices (by mfr, model, whatever) are supported by the drivers included in the 11.4 DVD? I'm sure this is a naive question,
I want to install a DL drive. My supplier has a suitable(?) IDE drive from HP which is not, as usual, supported by them for Linux. How do I access the openSUSE driver base to comfirm without having to buy it and attempt to install?
I recently installed openSUSE 11.2 on a computer with a Canon i860 printer attached to it. Previously this computer had Ubuntu 9.10 installed on it. When Ubuntu was installed on it, the computer found and printed on the Canon i860 printer just fine. When I installed openSUSE, the list of Canon drivers did *not* include the Canon i860. Just for giggles I selected Canon BJC 4000.
It prints, but it "misbehaves" - For example, if I want to print a document that says only "Hello world", it will print it, but it prints it about 20 times on one sheet. I figure this insanity is caused by the improper driver I selected. I'm not expert enough to know how to get this printer working. And - why would it work okay in Ubuntu 9.10, but not openSUSE 11.2? Did I do something wrong while installing openSUSE?
I am software developer, and I am new in kernel programming. I have token a look at linux sources, I found that drivers of all hardware are included in linux kernel sources. The question is, how Linux include this drivers on the Kernel?
- Including drivers statically in the the kernel is illogical of course. Since drivers will be loaded, all of them, even if they are not used. - making drivers as dynamic libraries (.so) is not sufficient, too. How does the kernel include this library if it was already compiled and build ?
Moreover, will Linux sources grow every time a new driver take place ? this causes many troubles: - Compiling linux will become slower year after year. - linux evolution will be difficult because next versions must support old drivers. - Linux Distributions will be huge in size.
after few years being limited with my pc configuration (windows OS) I realized that linux or it's distributions is the best invention in 21 century. And finally I am starting use it. openSUSE 11.4 installaition succesful, I updated it and it looks I don;t have any problems, but I got few questions.
1. How install older version of mozilla firefox internet browser here? I can't install some plugins because it's a firefox beta 12 version, for example. I am quake fan, o I like play quake live, but i can't install quake plugin, because my firefox is beta version.
2. Does I got all drivers instantly installed to my mashine? ATI video drivers, sound drivers ect??
3. Are there any How-To guides which can teach me, how I can improve my desktop? gadgets, 3D desktop ect...?
I'm creating my custom distro in SuseStudio, but I want to automatic login, but it says is is not supported in SLE10. But it has a scripts tab..Is it possible to create a script that creates automatic login
I was wondering if Ubuntu supports webcams, I mean I want to buy a webcam (for example logitec or intex) but their specifications tells me that the drivers are only supported on Windows platform.
Im having some issues installing the ATI Radeon Drivers. The card is a Radeon 9550

leaving the discussion is this logical or not. If I download the whole www folder to my hdd for example: from [URL] to /mnt/repos/oss/ and replace in package manager source [URL] with local one file://mnt/repos/oss will this work as it works from http server? What i want to do is to backup chosen repos before my linux release will be not supported anymore.
I'm trying to install oracle (11g R2) on my OpenSuse (11.3), but when I do startup nomount, I got an error: ORA-00854: MEMORY_TARGET not supported on this system On web, I found that I need to increase tmpfs because of my memory_target oracle init parameter. I do it with: mount -t tmpfs shmfs -o size=3G /dev/shm (previous value to tmpfs (df -h) is 2G). After that 'startup nomount' runs well, but after reboot, values are the same. So, how to 'save' this new value?
I downloaded OpenSUSE today hoping I could install it on my aging computer, a Pentium 3 1.3GHz, 512MB RAM and a 3dfx Voodoo 5500. When booting into the live CD, I cannot get it to go to the installation. After the GRUB screen (Or whatever is used) to choose install, I just get a black screen. Is 3dfx not supported by OpenSUSE?
I have an external sound blaster x-fi sound card for my laptop, however the software/drivers don't seem to be supported for Linux. Is there anything I can do to get this to work? I also have wireless speakers that connect to it so it would be a shame to not get them to work.
Source: openSUSE News KDE in openSUSE 11.1 and Beyond KDE 3.5 will not be included on 11.2 official media or in the release repository for 11.2, but the community certainly has the option of creating KDE 3.5 packages in the build service, and creating live CDs with KDE 3.5 packages for 11.2. What's everyone's views on this? I personally think that 3.5.x should stay till 12.x.
I have got a Debian Squeeze install DVD from a friend..The default installer installs GNOME...Is KDE and other DEs included in this DVD? If so , how do I choose during Install?
I am having some troubles installing tomcat on a fresh copy of 11.2. I began by following the instructions that I found here: Tomcat HOWTO - openSUSE and proceeded to install the requisite packages through YaST, except I chose to install tomcat6 and java 1.6, presuming that they would work equally well to the older versions indicated in the guide. My stumbling block came when the guide went on to tell me to download and compile an alternative mod_jk to the one included (even though I hadn't come across one, so I didn't have to uninstall one like the guide suggested.) The link provided in the guide was dead so I found an alternative link through google, and set up the directory structure as suggested. The next step tells me that I must run this command:
[code]...
I have tried to create an apxs2 directory in sbin, which isn't allowed. I have also tried running the command without the apxs2 on the end, also to no avail.
I have just entered the world of openSUSE after a chain of other linux distros over the last few years. Btw I love it, its already my favourite. It is useless for most people who are behind a router, because any transfers between same-network computers are subject to the same rules = slow and unnecessary.I used #256461 - wondershaper: Option to limit range of rules? - Debian Bug report logs for these mods.
Suggested /usr/sbin/wshaper.htb
Code:
#!/bin/bash # # Wonder Shaper # please read the README before filling out these values
[code]....
Should this be filed as a bug report? It seems like an obvious feature to me.
I'm trying to install some wireless drivers, but apparently I don't have a /lib/modules/<kernel>/build directory, which is causing the Makefile to throw an error. Is there a specific place I should point the Makefile at?
I have installed openSUSE 11.4, and I really like it compared to other linux versions I've tried, but I find it requires a bit more linux know-how.
Being fairly new to linux, it has been quite the effort to learn but I started getting the hang of things via online support and such. Lately I've been having some problems.
I need linux to run a TCAD program, and it requires some openGL functionality and was giving me errors when I tried entering the software related modeling GUI.
Anyhow, I thought it had to do with my graphics drivers, so I decided to update them via ATI proprietary driver. After doing this, the system booted me into the console rather than X.
I tried numerous online guides on how to fix the issues, by running all sorts of boot commands (nomodset), and I read the graphics driver theory, as well as trouble shooting ATI graphics.
In the process, I also installed a radeonhd-xorg11-something through YAST, and that caused a black screen altogether upon boot. I managed to boot into failsafe with x, and from there I removed it via YAST, however this did not resolve issues. I also deleted any xorg.cionf files in hopes that the system will default back to the radeon driver.
As it stands right now, I can only boot into my system via failsafe mode. I'm keeping the unit off for now as it's probably tired from all the hard reboots I had to do . If someone can help me resolve this issue, I can turn it on and enter any commands required, such as finding out the graphics card, the kernel, the driver currently running, etc and I can post it here.
when i login, Ubuntu asks to install 3D Drivers for my grapics card. Can i make a script in openSUSE to do this as well? Or even better, check for drivers on startup and then install the drivers for the graphics card on boot.
Is there any reason why taskjuggler is not included in openSUSE? I can see a version available in openSUSE Factory but it is not built with latest libs. I have several of my friends asking for Project Management software under openSUSE and I don't know what to advise them.
I'm running Debian wheezy on a Toshiba NB505 and I've noticed that the wireless connectivity can be painfully slow at times. I know it's not our home network because my desktop flies (running Windows).Currently, I have the driver from this guide installed. I went to Realtek's site to download the latest driver for this wireless card (RTL8188CE, the Linux/UNIX version) thinking maybe this more up-to-date driver would operate better than the one used in the guide above. Is there a possible way to install this driver, or should I just stick with the current driver I'm using from the guide above?
Immediately after the grub menu disappears I get the following error msg: Error 18 Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS. Sometimes the grub options come up again (in Text mode) ...all works fine Sometimes just start via "Failsafe", reboot...all works fine. What is happening here and what would be the right procedure to avoid this happening again.
I need to install the latest drivers for my Nvidia card. I have the Quadro FX 1800.I don't think the Nvidia One click installation will work with this card.I downloaded the drivers from Nvidia and tried to install them but their directions are very confusing. It says "exit x windows" and "restart in init 3". I don't know what that means. Can someone tell me step-by-step how to compile and install the nvidia drivers?I have opensuse 11.2 64-bit clean install with all the defaults, and the Quadro FX 1800.
I'm tying to install either 11.2 or 11.3 for a friend & he has an ATI Xpress200 card. Is this a legacy driver? would the repo way work? My experience is Nvidia not ATI.
