I'm know very little about Linux but decided to set up a machine running Drupal CMS on a Debian machine and it won't go. The folks at Drupal have tried to help but it seems the Debian OS won't do it's PHP thing for Drupal.

That means i'll have to start at the START I guess.

Debian Installation :: Moving Debian Install From Virtual Machine To Physical

Feb 20, 2010

I have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot. After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same. Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.

Debian :: Debian Net Install Would Work On A Dell Machine?

I was wondering if Debian Net install would work on a Dell machine. Because when I installed Windows on it I had actually go online with my other computer to find the damn dell drivers. So just wondering if Debian would detect the dell devices and actually have drivers for it.Yes, I realize it's probably a completely stupid question.

Debian :: Moved HD To New Machine / Can't Boot

Jul 20, 2011

I had a Thinkpad T61 running Debian 6 that died. I got a T400 and had hoped to save my debian 6 installation by putting the original T61 hard drive into the T400. When I do the machine gets to the Grub menu, then it starts booting and the text starts moving up the screen. Then it goes to a small blinking cursor at the top left corner and stays there. The T61 had an Nvidia card, the T400 has the switchable Intel/ATI. I went in the BIOS and told it to boot using the Intel only but no go. I'm thinking that Grub needs configging to see my new hard drive but I don't know how to do that.

Debian :: Dns Resolving Stops To Work On My Machine ?

Oct 18, 2010

I have some strange problem with dns resolving. I am working on computer and suddenly, out of nowhere dns resolving stops to work on my machine. Sometimes networking restart solves problem, sometimes not. It happens randomly two-three times in a week, and at random time. Network in virtual machine on same computer works perfectly even if dns resolving stops on host.

I have tried everything but I can't find what causes it. How can I troubleshoot to find out what causes problem? Ten minutes ago it happened again and I have solved problem with networking restart.

Debian Installation :: Updating While Moving To New Machine?

Sep 9, 2011

My Debian Lenny box has two hard drives: a smaller one, upon which I installed the system and a 500GB drive which, during installation, I assigned for mounting as the "/home" directory. A few days ago, the smaller (system) hard drive crashed. Although fsck was able to make the drive mountable again, many system files (esp. things like inittab) were lost.

Since the machine, itself, had actually been pretty old when I first installed Debian (Etch, originally), I am going to be replacing it with a new system and I have a few questions about getting this all done.

First of all, the old computer was a Pentium 4 and the new one is a Dual-core, 64-bit Pentium (E6600) with 4GB RAM and a 500GB SATA drive. I'd like to install 64-bit Debian Squeeze onto that drive and, since I've never used the 64-bit Debian before, would like to know if there are any pitfalls or caveats - especially any dire reasons I should stick with 32 bits, instead.

Next, I would like to keep the other 500GB (IDE) drive mounted on "/home" so that my things would be where they already were on the old system - especially files relating to Iceweasel and Icedove. Of course, there are no binaries on that drive, since I had all of that on the drive that crashed, but are there any other things I must take into consideration? Also, what would be the best way to make that drive "/home" during the new installation without wiping it out, but having it ready for when I create the users so I can point them to their appropriate directories?

Finally, since the old computer had been an Etch system that had been upgraded to Lenny and since I would be installing Squeeze (and, likely, the 64-bit Squeeze, at that) onto the new system, would there be any problems with the above scenario, considering the potential of older configuration files, etc. on the old "/home" drive?

My subject line says, "Updating while moving to new machine," but these really may not be "update" questions, per se. Then again, the presence of that old hard drive does introduce some update-like elements into the equation, and that is why I am asking these questions.

Debian Configuration :: Can't Ping Windows Xp Machine

Jan 23, 2010

I recently did a clean install of Debian 5, and a backup program called BackupPC. Both machines are on a small local network served by a router. Both machines have statically mapped IP addresses, done by the router via matching MAC addresses in a table of corresponding IP addresses (192.168.0.2 (HP-PC-XP), 192.168.0.3 (Debian). I configured Backup PC correctly (I think)...Upon running Backuppc, the first thing it tries to do when its time to run a backup is to ping the machine to be backed up. The name of the PC is stored in a backup pc config file. (I believe BackupPC does a DHCP request with the machine name to get the ip address, but not sure). Running the backup results in BackupPC tells me that it can't ping my xp machine. If I open up a terminal window in debian, i can successfully ping my xp machine when i use the ip address. 92.160.0.2 If I ping using the host name of the xp machine (e.g. HP-PC_XP), the ping command displays some ip address i've never seen...something like 63.123.155.104....how is it getting that and how can it be corrected?

I recall that nslookup looks at the local hosts file first to resolve the name....i look in my hosts file and found no such address (only contained localhost)....now what?

Debian Configuration :: Cannot Remote Desktop To Machine?

Dec 16, 2010

I cannot remote desktop to the Debian machine from anywhere, hether within the same network, or on a different network elsewhere. Also, the personal wiki I set up on it to be viewed via a normal web browser cannot be accessed, either. Both time out when attempting to connect to them. I can still ping the Debian machine when on the same network, though.

This started some time ago when we had a failure occur on our main server.had to powercycle everything in order to restore things back to normal, the Debian machine included. Since that time, this problem started to occur. This is a major thorn in my side in attempting to prepare for our website to move,I've been unable to figure out how to fix it.Originally, I thought it would be something in between the Debian machine and anything else, which would mean something like our firewall box or our hardware switch was the problem. But the tech support people who maintain those for us confirm that there is nothing wrong with them, so now I'm not certain anymore.

Configuration :: Sid Machine Can't Connect To Debian.org / Solve It?

Feb 1, 2011

My sid machine currently can't access debian.org, through apt hitting the repositories, surfing through Epiphany or Iceweasel, or pinging the server directly. It was working fine until about four days ago. However, if I type in the IP address, I can access the website, so it must be some sort of DNS issue. My home server, running Squeeze, can access debian.org just fine. Any suggestions for how to fix it?

Debian :: Machine Acting Buggy - Fan Kept Running After Update

Changed resolution in System/Prefs. Better, but the look is not the same as before update. The Gnome fonts and icons are too small, but the resolution is same as before update! My machine has been acting buggy lately...colored text in IceWeasel browser search field, where normally black. I have Firestarter running. How to tell if machine is hacked? I just logged out/in and all normal now. I still think the machine is acting weird.

Debian Configuration :: Copy Full System To Another Machine

Mar 31, 2016

I am setting up a mail server on debian. Once it's done, I'd like to have an indentical server on another machine, where debian will also be installed. The solution has to be hardware agnostic, so source machine is different than destination machine. I was reading on some wiki page that one can simply copy the root filesystem via rsync to the computer that he'd like to install the system on, then chroot to it and test if everything works. I'm guessing I'd have to change a couple things before, like :

- The network config
- The /etc/fstab file (disks and partitions may be different)

This article is about using rsync to transfer a copy of your "/" tree, excluding a few select folders. This approach is considered to be better than disk cloning with dd since it allows for a different size, partition table and filesystem to be used, and better than copying with cp -a as well, because it allows greater control over file permissions, attributes, Access Control Lists (ACLs) and extended attributes.
