I've installed newest Debian (Squeeze) and then on fresh system made instalation of VirtualBox OSE as it is written on http://wiki.debian.org/VirtualBox.
I've also created virtual machine, however when I try to run it I got error message:
RTR3Init failed with rc=-1912(rc=-1912)
Please install the virtual-ose-dkms package and execute 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root

So I recently upgraded from Debian 5 to Debian 6 and now for some reason I cant SSH into my server FROM my server. All of the following fail with the same error:

They all come back with: ssh: Could not resolve hostname 127.0.0.1: Name or service not known. I never actually tried this before upgrading so I'm not sure if its caused by the upgrade, but I would like to get this fixed. Also, ping with all of the above hostnames fails as well. I can SSH in from other computers and I can SSH out from the server. For whatever reason, I cant SSH from the server to the server though.
Previously, I issued a wakeonlan command to my sleeping debian (wheezy stable) server from (a mac) within my home network and then ssh in no problem. Worked like a charm. I could put it to sleep again and wake it up etc. Perfecto.
However, for some reasonI can now only ssh in once the server is rebooted (by physically switching it off then on again). If I put it to sleep then wake it, it does wake up --- however, ssh cannot then resolve the hostname:

I recently installed debian testing, amd64, on my box and I am running the xfce desktop. When I login, I always get a bubble popup telling me that virtualbox is not running. Is it something I should be worried about? I use only Linux on my machine.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have three Debian systems running, along with several XP laptops, PS3 and two DirecTV systems. I use two of the three Debian systems as media servers, and the third is an older system mostly for playing around with. My home network is running fine with the following nuisance. The two newer Debian (Lenny) systems are <barney> and <mitzi>, the older is named <oscar>, running Debian Sarge 3.1. From either locally or remote login to <barney> and <mitzi> I can ssh into either of the other two systems, however when logged into <oscar> I cannot ssh by name to either of the other systems. e.g. ssh: mitzi: Temporary failure in name resolution..However, from <oscar> I can ping outside my network (e.g. ping www.google.com) with no problems.I can also ssh to the other systems via IP address, just not by name.
I've compared the /etc/ssh/ssh_config, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/ssh/sshd_config and other files between the two systems and not seeing anything peculiar. arp, route, etc., don't show different behavior between the systems either.
I have squeeze with gnome. Various apps let me log in as root when needed to but if I logout as a user and try to login as root it won't let me (won't authenticate password). I had this problem before and reinstalled Debian and definitely checked for it to allow me to do this and it worked for a while after new install. Apparently some update overrode my preferences. This is a major defect and may force me to abandon Debian. I don't use root often but I don't have any use for a operating system that won't let me use it. Anyone know how to correct this. I am not interested in using a terminal on a regular basis or ever for that matter.

When I open a web browser (be it iceweasel or epiphany) and try to go to google.com, it tells me it can't resolve the host name. [Edit: They do, however, allow me to go anywhere on debian.org, minus the search feature] I also get the same error when I try to go to my website running on a local server. However, when I type the server's IP address (192.168.0.10), it goes to the website fine. Basically, any program I run that needs to resolve a host name returns an error, with the exception of the host command:
I've tried changing my DNS server IP from 192.168.0.1 (my router, configured to provide DNS) to 192.168.1.254 (my internet modem, also configured to provide DNS). That didn't help any. Then I changed my DNS server IP to the same one used by the modem, and now everything works.
I've tried googling my way out of the issue, and I've found where someone had the same issue as I've got and fixed it by adding "blacklist ipv6" to their /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file, but that didn't work for me.
So, recap: Why does resolving domain names fail for certain applications (except the "host" program) when the DNS server IP is that of my router or modem (which works fine for all of my other computers), but suddenly works when I point the computer straight to my ISP's DNS servers, and how can I permanently fix the problem?
Any attempt to load a webpage gives a Cannot Resolve Hostname error. i can ping [URL], but cannot load the page. However, the page will load by typing its IP address [URL] I have been trying to figure this out for days. cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 192.168.1.254
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Debian with the latest testing iso, and I'm having problems connecting to the web via browser. I can ping hostnames (i.e. google.com, debian.org, etc.) from the terminal and it resolves just fine, but if I try to load a page from Iceweasel or Epiphany it says the page won't load because it can't resolve the hostname. Can someone tell me what I'm missing?the detail that I'm running amd64. I've checked iptables and found no entries, and for good measure I flushed it to be certain. I also checked resolv.conf but that looked normal, just a nameserver entry pointing to my home router. I'm new to Debian, but have used Linux for years, and I'm genuinely stumped. I'm sure the solution will smack me in the head for its simplicity, but nonetheless I need at least a shove in the right direction.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed installed Debian 9 (stretch/unstable) which has GNOME 3.16.3 and runs Linux kernel 4.1.0-2 by default in Virtualbox 5.0. The host OS is Windows 8.1 On each instance of activating full screen mode in the VM, a freeze occurs then an abrupt close (abort).
I am inclined to believe that this problem resides in the OS (Debian 9) rather than Virtualbox or the Host. The reason being is that prior to installing Debian 9 (today) I had Jessie installed for quite some time where this error/issue never surfaced.
This issue is rather complicated in the sense that if alternating between full screen and normal mode quickly, this occurs whereas, if done every 10 seconds or thereabout it happens almost seamlessly. Also, if 3DAcceleration is switched off that doesn't occur.
How do I find the root of this problem and a resolution to it?

I have a rather urgent problem with my network, I got two virtual network interfaces one internal and one external. The problem is; I can't get connection to internet. The external NIC is set as a NAT and the internal is... internal.

netmask 255.255.255.0
Running with this configuration makes my internet connect go away, however if I remove the configuration for eth1 everything is working fine.
The VirtualBox website have a 64 bit deb for installation available for AMD64 Lenny but not for Squeeze. Is it okay to install the Lenny package on Squeeze or would this cause a problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to set up a little virtual network with Debian Lenny guests (the host is Debian Squeeze, but I don't think it matters). I installed Lenny in a VM and it works fine. Then I cloned the hard drive, garion@Laptop:~$ VBoxManage clonevdi Linux 1.vdi Linux 2.vdi created a new VM with exactly the same settings as the first one and booted the new disc. The problem is that there's no eth0 in the new VM, but it is in the original one. Also if I "unplug" the cable, dmesg won't notice anything. In the original VM it works fine. They both have the same virtual network card: PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973). I've also tried NAT as well as internal network settings.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed the latest virtualbox 4.1 on my desktop and laptop. It hosed suspend and hibernate.
The laptop is A Dell D630 with Intel Core2 Duo CPU, the desktop is an AMD based ASUS M3N78-VM mobo with Athlon II x2 250 CPU. Debian Testing 32-bit (same results with the 2.6.39 and the 3.0 kernels). Both have nvidia cards though - the desktop an integrated 8200, the laptop a NVS 135M. But suspend/hibernate was working before with the 4.0 series virtualbox.
The workaround is to clear the vboxpci vboxnetadp vboxnetflt vboxdrv modules from the memory before suspend/hibernate. I added the
service vboxdrv stop
rmmod vboxpci vboxnetadp vboxnetflt vboxdrv
lines to my sleep script (i dont use power managers, just the acpi powerbutton/lid scripts modified). Everything is ok now.
Tryin to update guest additions to match new host. Change fstab to allow exec. Still get permission denied.

Winduhs is not allowed to directly access The Internets, and I am not setting up bridging as that makes it possible for the guest to mount layer 2 attacks on the LAN. I need for the guest to tunnel through the host without being able to see anything on the host, so it can then get access to The Internets, while being protected by iptables (Shorewall).
Used to be with VMware I had host-only set and the guest in a different class c (192.168.2.1) from the host (192.168.1.1) I turned on ipforwarding, set Shorewall rules, and it all worked. Now I have everything set with VirtualBox, and it does not work. Guest can ping its interface but not host. Host can ping vboxnet0. Host is supposed to masquerade guest's 192.168.2.1 through to the default out at 192.168.1.1, but it's not. I think a clue is in routing, but I don't know what's wrong.

I haven't used my XP partition for two years, but recently found that I could not program my phone using VirtualBox or Wine. So I tried booting to XP but it just comes up with a flashing cursor. update-grub2 and it sees the part, but same problem.

I recently did a clean install of Debian 5, and a backup program called BackupPC. Both machines are on a small local network served by a router. Both machines have statically mapped IP addresses, done by the router via matching MAC addresses in a table of corresponding IP addresses (192.168.0.2 (HP-PC-XP), 192.168.0.3 (Debian). I configured Backup PC correctly (I think)...Upon running Backuppc, the first thing it tries to do when its time to run a backup is to ping the machine to be backed up. The name of the PC is stored in a backup pc config file. (I believe BackupPC does a DHCP request with the machine name to get the ip address, but not sure). Running the backup results in BackupPC tells me that it can't ping my xp machine. If I open up a terminal window in debian, i can successfully ping my xp machine when i use the ip address. 92.160.0.2 If I ping using the host name of the xp machine (e.g. HP-PC_XP), the ping command displays some ip address i've never seen...something like 63.123.155.104....how is it getting that and how can it be corrected?
I recall that nslookup looks at the local hosts file first to resolve the name....i look in my hosts file and found no such address (only contained localhost)....now what?
I have known for a while that my puny Celeron 633 box is running an SMP kernel but I didn't care until now. I do not remember installing any SMP kernel. It would not have made sense.What should I do to make sure I'm running a uniproc kernel? I wanted to edit config-2.6.26-2-686 and change all the lines ending in SMP=yes to SMP=no but am not sure what this will do.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot remote desktop to the Debian machine from anywhere,hether within the same network, or on a different network elsewhere. Also, the personal wiki I set up on it to be viewed via a normal web browser cannot be accessed, either. Both time out when attempting to connect to them. I can still ping the Debian machine when on the same network, though.
This started some time ago when we had a failure occur on our main server.had to powercycle everything in order to restore things back to normal, the Debian machine included. Since that time, this problem started to occur. This is a major thorn in my side in attempting to prepare for our website to move,I've been unable to figure out how to fix it.Originally, I thought it would be something in between the Debian machine and anything else, which would mean something like our firewall box or our hardware switch was the problem. But the tech support people who maintain those for us confirm that there is nothing wrong with them, so now I'm not certain anymore.
My sid machine currently can't access debian.org, through apt hitting the repositories, surfing through Epiphany or Iceweasel, or pinging the server directly. It was working fine until about four days ago. However, if I type in the IP address, I can access the website, so it must be some sort of DNS issue. My home server, running Squeeze, can access debian.org just fine. Any suggestions for how to fix it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a mail server on debian. Once it's done, I'd like to have an indentical server on another machine, where debian will also be installed. The solution has to be hardware agnostic, so source machine is different than destination machine. I was reading on some wiki page that one can simply copy the root filesystem via rsync to the computer that he'd like to install the system on, then chroot to it and test if everything works. I'm guessing I'd have to change a couple things before, like :
- The network config
- The /etc/fstab file (disks and partitions may be different)

I'm trying to install the openconnect VPN client on a server machine, Debian 7 Wheezy, and APT is trying to install a lot of dependencies. I think it's trying to install the whole desktop environment.I was searching the web but all articles are for desktop machines and nobody mentions my problem with the dependencies. I also have openconnect installed in two Gnome desktop machines without problems.

I've been experimenting with Debian coming up with a system with suits my needs. I have done this and I'm wondering, "Do I have to start from scratch on my physical machine or can I convert an existing VDI to IMG and possibly port it to the physical machine?"

I'm running kernel release 2.6.26-2-686 on a i686 and are trying to share files between my machine and some Windows 95/98 machines. When I enter smb://ip_number/share_name in Nautilus, it works. I can browse the files. When I try the same with smbclient or smbmount, it complains.
smbclient -I=ip_number -L=//server/share gives cli_rpc_pipe_open: cli_nt_create failed on pipe srvsvc to machine tf_calibration. Error was ERRSRV - ERRerror (Non-specific error code.)
I have a external harddisk attached to my linux PC.I have a laptop having windows 7 on my network.I want to to be able to open up the folder in the external harddisk(linux partition) and check the files from my laptop.
