I have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot.After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same.Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn Debian lenny, when I wanted to go from X to a virtual console, I would type (for example) <Ctrl> <Alt> <F1>. Then I got the traditional 25x80 screen, which is wonderful in bad lighting conditions.
On Debian squeeze, virtual consoles are no longer 25x80. They fit way more than 25x80 characters on the screen. They go through the frame buffer, which I guess I must keep that way because otherwise it would ruin X.
But I want my 25x80 back, for those bad lighting conditions.
If I set /etc/default/console-setup to FONTFACE="VGA", at least I get a readable font.
ANd if I set /etc/default/console-setup to SCREEN_WIDTH=80 and SCREEN_HEIGHT=25, they do the obvious, but the characters are just as small, and the data is all in the upper left corner of the screen.
How do I get 25x80 so it fills the screen, as in the days of lenny, without removing /dev/fb0?
I got a new dsl modem/router today and now for some reason I can't login into an ssh session using putty and windows using the hostname of the debian box. I can login using the ip though. Also, it seems I can still access the debian box via samba/windows explorer using the host name.

Linux ubuntu 11.04 does not install on my virtual machine? I have a problem installing ubuntu on my virtual machine. recently I downloaded ubuntu and burned it to a cd and a dvd. but now I have a problem, when after the setup is nearly 80% percent complete. the installation stops and says that cd or dvd has a problem. but I have tested the cd and dvd and even the dvd drive, also the .Iso file using 7zip and cd checker. I allocated 304 mb of ram out of 896 mb. I am using oracle vbox 4.0.6 and win xp as host.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using Debian for three or so years now. Not sure what all the difference it makes, but I'm installing Debian Squeeze on a Sony Vaio desktop computer... With an nVidia GeForce 5200 which works perfectly in other computers and on the same computer when dual booting with Windows XP. I've tried and installed several times already to no avail. When I fresh install just the standard system, no graphic desktop, no Xorg, no servers, no nothing, just the standard system, command line only. When I do the initial boot on this blessed computer, part way through the boot process my monitor shuts off and it says frequency out of range (thats a message from the monitor itself, not the computer or debian).
The same install process I've executed countless times. I thought it was a dependency issue, problem with X perhaps. I can install lenny, but not squeeze. When booting in single user mode, it seems like it craps out either during or right after it loads or does something with the "drm" - you know how during the boot script, the machine "flashes" the fonts and the screen blips... its seems to me like that's where its happening at. The monitor works just fine, I really don't think that's the problem. But it is frustrating and I have no clue where to go about finding what the issue is if I can't see whats going on.
I am dual booting a pc with Ubuntu and Windows 7. I am using Grub as the boot loader. I then boot into Windows 7 and Create a virtual hard drive (.vhd) file using Disk2Vhd. After the machine is converted, I boot into Ubuntu, and import the .vhd into Virtualbox.
Problem:When I turn on the virtual machine in Virtualbox, It comes up with Grub rescue. How do install Grub to the virtual machine. I can boot the virtual machine in virtualbox off of a Ubuntu CD, and then somehow install Grub...
I downloaded Fedora 12 which happens to be an ISO file.
I created a Virtual Machine with VM Player and specified the ISO file to boot from.
According to the Fedora Installation Guide, I can run the application called "Install To Hard Drive".
When I execute this application, It does nothing. Is there any tricks on how to install Fedora on a Virtual Machine or have I misunderstood?

I am looking for step-by-step guide to do so. I can go for any easy to work with Linux distribution , may be UBUNTU. But Hyper-V page says it officially supports only SUSE and REDHAT, others can be done on owner's risk.

When I choose 'check cd for defects' before I am trying to install, every time a different error is reported... so I fear that the virtual CD drive does not work properly. It takes forever to get past the initial white/blue loading bar when it first boots and then it just goes white, so I can't see anything. I've already tried modifying the bootline parameter of the live CD to include noprobe, noacpi, noapic, nousb, and nofirewire. However, the result is the same. Am I missing something?
