The server I'm running runs Debian Etch, Squid and Shorewall. Every 24 hours the server gets a new internet IP so I need to use dyndns to keep the dns pointing to the correct PC.
I have a webserver that is running behind the debian server and am having trouble with it. When I enter the web address, it gets a timeout.
I've got a Shorewall (Shoreline?) firewall up and running, but it's logging to /var/log/messages. I'd much rather have it logging to another location e.g. /var/log/firewall but can't find (a clear enough) explanation on how to do this. Apparently, it varies greatly depending on the distro, the kernel, and the version of Shorewall that is running. You'd think it would be something as simple as setting a path in a config file, but apparently not. I'm running a stock Lenny kernel on the firewall machine. It comes with version 4.0.15 of Shorewall.

Ok let's say I have Apache Webservers on 2 different machines within my network, I have http://outterABC.com setup at dyndns.org to point to my modem at home, and my router forwards Port 80 to the ServerA Machine (i.e. 192.168.0.3). I can access my webpage I setup for the Server A Machine.
But what I want to try and do is somehow access my ServerB machine's website that is on my same network. I tried something like this http://ServerB.outterABC.com and the apache page came up with something like the page wasn't available. I want to access the content of the ServerB website, but because I have only one router, i can only forward Port 80 site traffic to my ServerA machine's website. I'm sure it's a different syntax I should use but i'm just not sure what I should enter to bring up the apache root web page for the Server B website via http://outterABC.com
I tried setting up DNS A records on ServerA, but I don't think it will work with what i'm trying to do above.
when i go to my server's IP address, the index.php files is downloaded, not run, how can I fix this? I have php5 installed and enabled.

I posted a previous topic on bridging, and that didn't seem to work, so I went with Shorewall and I'm trying to setup NAT, but I'm struggling very badly. I have the interfaces configured where eth1 is my Local LAN (loc) network, and eth0 connects to my ISP (net). But my problem is that I have no clue how to forward traffic from eth1 to eth0, without using ProxyARP, which routes all traffic to eth1, and doesn't allow traffic out on itself. I've looked at the NAT tutorials, and they don't make sense to me, because I have two interfaces that I want to be able to talk to each other and the internet at the same time. Is there anyone who's good with Shorewall?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed debian on my laptop and included during the installation the webserver version. Now I want to develop a page locally to test it before I put it on the web. I first had an old reflex, jumping straight away and installing xampp. But then I thought that I already all that it takes as I installed the webserver feature of debian. I installed phpmyadmin ( with the command #apt-get install phpmyadmin) as to be able to create and attribute databases but when I try to log in I have the following message:
"Error
#2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured)"
I googled but I cannot find the mysql.conf (I searched using "find") but with no result. It is all very blury what is going on with this webserver option running on my laptop...
Which distro is the best for a webserver? and are there any specifics I should keep in mind choosing one?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running the current release of Debian with the 2.6.26-2 kernel. This is an upgrade from an older (2.4 kernel) series redhat release. One of the things I had working in the older system was a dns server with accompanying monthly update of the root hints file. I tried working through a dns how-to to set this up again, but it seems much has moved around since I last played with this. All of the files listed in the how-to are not where it says they should be. I am looking for a better reference on keeping the dns server running with current server information.

From my server I need to run a command for backup on 25 remote servers (through a script). Now I have pushed the public keys for remote ssh connectivity on all of them and it works ( I can push files using rsync without the need to enter passwords on the remote servers), howver, I need to run the following command:
ssh odsadmin@10.139.111.1 'cp -a /var/www/life /var/www/life-v4'
when I run this command, I keep getting asked to enter the password, I even tried putting sudo in front of the cp, but still get the request to enter the password.

I have used dedicated servers before with webhosting, but did not do the installations of apache and other items. The server we had purchased had CentOS installed.

I have a Ubuntu server (10.10) setup with apache and is being port NAT'ted via firewall from outside to the webserver.I am able to access the webserver from inside LAN but not from outside. NATs are working fine because I can see the traffic come through on tcpdump but the webserver will not respond to the request from outside ip address.Here are the tcpdumps.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure if it is the connection I'm losing or something else is happening and I just can't fathom it out.
I have set up Debian from netinstall. I installed openssh server and Apache. The server is connected to our local network with the IP address 192.168.0.51 and shares a physical port on a simple ethernet switch.
I can SSH into the server from Ubuntu but it takes around one minute to ask for a password and another 20 seconds or so to bring up the prompt. I have checked twice to make sure their are no conflicting IP addresses on the network (all static). The connection seems fine but if I am away from the secure shell for more than a couple of minutes or I minimize the terminal window I can no longer type anything at the remote machines prompt. Reconnection without restarting the server is impossible on most attempts and the terminal just hangs before the password prompt appears.
I have the same kind of issue with Apache. I can view Apaches test index.html using just the IP address from my browser but after a few minutes I get the 'connecting to 192.168.0.52' in the status bar and it never reconnects.
The issue is i am using the RHEL server as my webserver and database centre. Now its a brand new formatted server with good amount of RAM and the usage is not much. Its being accessed locally over the LAN. But still i can see speed deficiency. Some of the pages do not get loaded and some times i can see the delays in loading the new pages. Any idea y is it so? Or is there anything i can do to increase the speed?

I have checked and firewall and selinux settings are disabled. The two webservers are able to ping and browse other sites. Dns settings are the same for all 4 servers. traceroute for working and not working webservers are the same.

I think the problem is using the files from the DVD on the webserver instead of a mirror, but I believe this should be possible. I do not have enough space on the webserver to house an entire debian mirror.
