Debian Hardware :: Cd And Dvd Drive Close Immediately After Opening?

Jul 19, 2011

I have a cd drive and a dvd burner in my computer that have worked fine for years. I run an up to date wheezy box. In the last month or so, the drives both started having a problem where they would immediately close after I open them by using the button on the drives. I am not sure which update caused the problem. If I do manage to shove a disc in before it closes, Nautilus doesn't mount the disk. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get the drives to work again?

Apr 16, 2009

while hardening a red hat enterprise 5 installation I have done something that causes the sessions of all user accounts except root to close immediately after authentication. in the /var/log/secure log file it will show three log entries per attempt:

<date/time><hostname> login: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user fred by LOGIN(uid=0)
<date/time><hostname> login: LOGIN ON tty1 BY fred
<date/time><hostname> login: pam_unix(login:session): session closed for user fred

Since I did a number of things and have not been able to identify what caused this.

Ubuntu :: Folders Immediately Close/Infinite "starting File Manager"?

Jan 20, 2011

Not sure where to post this, I am runing 10.04 LTS, 64 bit and things have been great, until..... I activated a Ubuntu One account and once I did, my Ubuntu One folder would immediately close upon opening and my downloads folder would immediately close upon opening. I delt with it, no big deal. So I decided that I need to get my crap off the Ubuntu One account so I downloaded them all from the website onto my desktop. Now none of my folders immediately close upon opening and ever couple seconds my desktop flashes and a windows quickly opens and closes stating "starting file manager".

I found a couple of posts the looked like fixes, but nothing has worked. clicked off show_desktop in gconf-editor which stops the "starting file manager", but does not stop the folder from immediately closing. I also found this, [URL]... but I don't know hoe to apply the patch nor if I should. I have tried some other things, but I cant find the threads again to provide. I believe one was the killall Nautilus then apply Linux Essentials, which I don't think even ran at all.

Fedora Hardware :: "Drive Failure Expected In Less Than 24 Hours. Save All Data Immediately"

Nov 21, 2009

I have a 500GB Hitachi external hard drive that I use for backup. It's about 17 months old and has barely been used. Two partitions reside on it: a 446.2GB ext4 partition I use for backup and an LVM partition that contains an NTFS partition and another ext4 partition.

I started it and connected it to my laptop today (after not using for 4 months). A libnotify message warned that "drive failure [was] expected in less than 24 hours." Palimpset shows "Reallocated Sector Count" with status "FAILING" and value "343 sectors" and "Current Pending Sector Count" with value "1556" and status "FAILING". At first I figured it was just the self-check being programmed for NTFS only (not unheard of). But then I saw that Palimpset has the Linux partition labelled as "unrecognized". The temperature is normal (about 20C). What's going on here?I have not mounted the drive yet and the data is largely unimportant, so I'm more concerned about the hardware (even though hardware damage seems the unlikely possibility). To prevent or minimize hardware damage, what would my best course of action be?

At some point of time, I just started getting everything from backports... and after some things and hops later, the computer does in fact report having Debian 6.0.Anyway - I again did an upgrade... and now the problem occurs.

For completeness sake here is the script I am using:

Debian Hardware :: USB Devices Not Working Immediately (HP Envy 17 N120nd)

Feb 5, 2016

I have problem with several usb devices plugged to laptop HP Envy 17 n120nd, new laptop with Skylake. Because of the Skylake I have Debian Testing installed (instead of Windows, hence no dual boot). The problem is as follows. When I plug an usb device such as memory stick, usb storage and wired mouse, none of them are detected, despite the fact that lights of these devices are on (except the mouse as I will explain later).

But when I reboot the laptop, while the usb devices stay plugged in the laptop, then they usually are detected (hence not always) and works without problem. Except the mouse: after completing the reboot the light of the mouse went off, indicating that there is no power. Replugging the mouse results in power for the mouse and it works like a charm too.

What can be the cause? And, maybe more important. I contacted HP, but they give no support for Linux.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: CD / DVD Drive Not Opening On Multi-disk Software Install

Dec 17, 2009

I'm trying to install a multi-disk (cd's) program and I've run into a snag. It's a windows program so I'm using Wine. The installer is asking for the second disk of a two disk set. However, the program won't release the drive so it won't open. I've searched a bit and discovered the command "eject" but it tells me I'm not root so I can't do that. I'm also worried about the consequences of typing a command I'm not familiar with (as root). I don't want to unmount the drive if that will disable it when I'm not confident I could remount it given my lack of expertise. I just want to eject the disk.

I tried the "straightened paper clip in the little hole on the drive" method. It didn't work. It knocks the drive out somehow and I had to cancel the installation to get it working again.

Debian :: USB Ports Don't Wake Up - Have To Close And Open Lid Of LT

Oct 20, 2015

I have installed Debian Jessie (<-- brilliant OS ) on my uncles Laptop (it is a Thinkpad E540) with Cinnamon as desktop environment. The installation was no problem. Everything apart from one minor thing works nicely. The minor thing however is the following:

I don't know what it is, but when I don't use a particular usb port for a while and then try to plug in a usb stick or a wacom tablet, it doesn't get recognized, it doesn't show up when I use f.e. Code: Select alllsusb. When I close the lid of the laptop and open it again, then the particular usb device gets recognized and cinnamon asks me what to do, f.e. open a folder and show the content of the usb stick I have plugged in. Because of the success on two other laptops I use the following

Code: Select all# /etc/systemd/system/powertop.service
[Unit]
Description=Powertop tunings

[Service]
Type=oneshot
RemainAfterExit=no
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/powertop --auto-tune
Environment="TERM=xterm"

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

to save power on the Thinkpad (this is in no way my service script, I tuned everything using powertop in the terminal after having had logged in, the script above stems from a brilliant user here on the forum). Could it therefore be autosuspend that is not working properly here?

Debian Configuration :: Avoid Suspend Of Lid Close Without Login

Jul 20, 2015

So I have this laptop with a busted battery, I'm trying to get it into some kind of headless server, media topbox hybrid.

First thing I want to do is being able to leave it shut (powered on) in the corner without having to interact with it directly.

I've setup ssh and vnc so to login remotely and do task, transfer files and etc.

However there is a little issue with the laptop lid down upon turning it on, it immediately goes into suspend when getting to the display manager, which is 'lightdm'.

I suppose this is the default setting for Xorg and as such my custom configs for KDE only kick in after I login.

Question is: I never seen configuration for default power management stuff being done in Xorg, is there some way to disable automatic suspension on lid down?

Another question is: After the KDE kicks in does it always replace power options? I have setup a xorg.conf file specifying dpms options but these don't seem to remain.

Debian Configuration :: Software Suspend Working But Not When Lid Close

Nov 2, 2015

System is a Dell E7440, with Jessie, I recently upgraded to kernel 4.2.5 due to issues with wireless that are supposed to be fixed. (The same issue exists with jessie stock kernel 3.16 and BPO tough)

When I close the lid it often does not work and I get this in dmesg

Code: Select all[  567.104335] pci_bus 0000:01: Allocating resources
[  567.104349] pci_bus 0000:02: Allocating resources
[  567.104415] pci_bus 0000:03: Allocating resources
[  567.104428] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment
[  567.105515] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment
[  567.105540] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment
[  567.105585] i915 0000:00:02.0: BAR 6: [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x2] has bogus alignment

[Code] ....

I suppose the i915 stuff is something I can ignore, However

Code: Select all[  570.768020] acpi device:40: Cannot transition to power state D3hot for parent in (unknown)

seems to be the issue.. I don't even know what device:40 is.

in ls -l it shows as

Code: Select all  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Nov  2 12:28 device:40 -> ../../../devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0A08:00/INT33C6:00/device:40

and

Code: Select all# cat /sys/bus/acpi/devices/device:40/path
\_SB_.PCI0.SDHC.WI01

The awkward thing is tough, software suspend by running "systemctl suspend" works perfectly and always.

Code: Select all [  872.054627] PM: Syncing filesystems ... done.
[  872.091506] PM: Preparing system for sleep (mem)
[  872.092045] Freezing user space processes ... (elapsed 0.001 seconds) done.
[  872.093377] Freezing remaining freezable tasks ... (elapsed 0.001 seconds) done.
[  872.094563] PM: Suspending system (mem)
[  872.094595] Suspending console(s) (use no_console_suspend to debug)

[Code] ....

So despite the mysterious issue with acpi device 40, how is real lid close different from "systemctl suspend"? And can I simply workaround the issue by making such a suspend when the lid closes?

Debian Hardware :: Disabling Laptop Lid-close Action

Dec 17, 2011

Dell Latitude C610 laptop with Debian Squeeze.I am using the computer as a print and file server, accessing it with ssh, so I don't need the display (which is busted anyway). I want to close the lid without having the computer suspend. Could not find a way to make it happen with gnome-power-preferences or the BIOS settings. There is a script, /etc/acpi/lid.sh, that runs when the laptop lid switch changes. Part of the script is shown here:

Code: Select allgrep -q closed /proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state # this is a file of 1 line like "state:   open" or presumably "state:   closed"
 if [ $? = 0 ]                               # The brackets evaluate to True when the lid is closed.
then
    if [ x$LID_SLEEP = xtrue ]; then
        [ -x /etc/acpi/sleep.sh ] && /etc/acpi/sleep.sh # i.e., if this file exists, then run it.
        exit
    fi
... there's more ...

The stuff that gets executed after the if [ #$ = 0 ] is the stuff that suspends the computer. So I just replaced the brackets with something that is certain to be false, so it will never happen:

Code: Select allif [ 1 = 2 ]
I admit this is FAR from an elegant solution, but it seems to work and it doesn't fubar the system.
