I was just playing with Fedora 13 and found that when I try to watch any AVI file it searches all required Codecs from RPM Fusion repository and install it. I was just wondering if this can be done on the openSUSE because what I know about Fedora is, it doesn't customize the products and uses as it is. If someone know how to enable such Autodetecting in Totem.

In the control centre under multi media selector for configuring GStreamer it has Autodetect and two other setting, X Window System (No Xv) and X Window System (X11/XShm/Xv) etc. When I test the X Window System (No Xv) the test card in full screen is far better then autodetect, should I keep this setting, the reason I ask is I can't notice the difference when watching video.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was using THIS guide to install restricted multimedia codecs. I got to the part where I had to switch system packages to the Packman packages. It came up with a number of dependency errors. I then had a stupid moment and told it to ignore the dependencies and break the applications. Now Xine won't even start, and Amarok seems to have disappeared on my computer. Oh and I also got a bunch of weird dependency problems when I was trying to install some of the packages from Packman too as listed on the guide. I also told it to ignore them when it couldn't find the dependencies. I'm scared I fudged multimedia up so badly I would have to do a clean install to get it back. BTW, I'm running openSUSE 11.2. I don't know if there are other specifications that matter.

On thing I noticed was that for below packages I had to choose an older version from openSUSE repo because of the installed version of gstreamer*plugins*base.

I'm hoping to find a batch of codecs for my newly installed openSUSE OS. I have a very troublesome collection of .mkv files that took several codec packs to make them work. For a brief explanation, I had tried haali and matroska both together and they still didn't work on certain mkvs. I ended up using CCCP, but that's win only as far as I can tell. It took the latest update of CCCP to work on all of my mkvs.
I downloaded the mplayer essential codecs pack and extracted in directories mentioned.I even compiled mplayer and it can play now almost all the files. But I am having a problem.The problem is that other multimedia players dont play even a single file.I tried with xine,totem,kaffiene and every bundled player.

But I found when trying to install libxine1-codecs that theres only a 32 bit version and no 64 bit support. This seems different than my past experience.

I am new to both SUSE and anything that's not Debian based, so please understand if I'm not able to comprehend a lot of what you say quickly. After a successful install, I attempted to play an MP3 file. This did not work in Amarok, and installation of it would also not work. So I went to this site, openSUSE 11.3 | SUSE Linux | Beginner's guide to multimedia codecs MP3 DVD 3D nvidia ati wireless and installed the multimedia codecs and all that. While I was there I also installed the ATI driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 onboard chip. After booting back up, x would not start, so I fixed that with a command. After finally getting into X, sound wouldn't work, and I con not figure out why. I know if it installed something the affects my audio.

Can ANYONE out there give a step by step walk through of installing and running all the necessary files, codecs, apps. from a fresh install that has worked for them to get media to work in suse 11.2? Then, I got to reading in the forums and noticed that there was a "one click" configuration for Gnome users. After doing some more reading, I saw a lot of references to restricted codecs and things of that nature. After beginning the one-click process and then aborting midway through installation, three questions come to mind:
1) Why all the warnings about legalities of downloading the codecs/files? If I bought the music and I use the codecs to listen to it, where does legalities come into play?
2) While installing some of the different files, etc in the one-click process, I received a few warnings that a particular file was not from a trusted source (I don't remember the info verbatim) and then it gave me an email address, presumably from the developer, and asked if I wanted to install it anyway.
3) If I do go through the one-click process, will I be able to listen to I-tunes or am I pretty much screwed on I-tunes on linux?
How to make win32 codecs (package w32codec-all) work on 64 bit system? Simple install of "w32codec-all" package doesn't help. I tried to compile mplayer from sources. After finishing configure, the script returned that win32 codes will be unavailable because of 64-bit system.I need to view some avi-files coded in Intel Indeo 4. As I understand, this codec exists only in win32 codecs.

It's more easy to install and maintain some services then make suse play video. I'm going crazy when every player says to me that it doesn't contain any codecs. I heard i'ts all about licensing.. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 11.4 in a kiosk environment and only want VLC as my video plug-in. Since 11.4 FireFox crashes whenever it tries to using the application/x-VLC player type. I've tried disabling Totem, selecting VLC as the application/x-VLC type but nothing works. I'd just like to uninstall the Totem plugins completely but don't know how... or find a way to make VLC work in 11.4 with Firefox 4. I installed FF 4.0.1 but no change.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSM player works yes, but how do i get the thumbnail previews. I did a fresh install of opensuse, i installed the updates they Yast told me to. I followed the guide precisely this time, using the command line method and encountered some problems. 4 files, asked to be broken or use obsolete at the point where i have to do the switch to packman repository. I chose use obsolete cuz i didn't want to break anything. When i tried to set an mkv to open in SMplayer the optionw asn't there, only banshee and totem. I opened Yast and it told me to install opensuse codec installer and another file can't remember) which i did. The option to open files in SMplayer, Xine etc came up then.
I'd like to get the thumbnails and I'd like to see Totem work as well. I know i don't need to, but considering that i downloaded the neccesary codecs, i expect it to work :/ or am i wrong with that assumption On a totally unrelated note, is there a way to increase the resolution of the bootloader? i'd like to be 1920x1200 to full my screen
Just installed Open Suse 11.3 on my dual-boot PC ( and Ubuntu 10.10). Installation process of both OS goes well and smooth. But, unfortunately when I tried to play movies on both default applications (Banshee and Totem) in Open Suse Gnome 11.3, I've got the message to search for XVID MPEG-4 decoder. And till now, I still unable to search for it, because there's still no sound or a little sound on both players.

Totem in 11.3 uses Gstreamer, and i believe i have all gstreamer plugins installed, good, bad, ugly, base etc. Also thumbnails won't show. THere's also this issue where everything i try to play wants to be played with banshee, how do i stop that? i tried going into Preferred applications and put it on custom, but i can't differentiate music and video, there's just a multimedia option.
I would like to have music autplayed with Banshee, and Video autoplayed with SMplayer without having to go through the right click, play with option :/
Full screen flash is aproblem in 11.3 64 bit just as it ALWAYS is in most distros i tried *sigh* there's stuttering, and i can't scroll through the video ideally.
For the sake of saving spack i have a non multimedia related question. How do i handle nzbs? in windows i use sabnzb which is cross platform, but their is only a Fedora RPM meaning i'll have to compile it for opensuse which i have NO Idea how to do. Alternative NZB handlers i can't find in the regular repositories or webpin.
Totem and Banshee don't seem to want to play .avi files, Kaffeine, SMplayer work perfectly though. I followed the Multimedia guide, and switched system packages to Packman.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just did a fresh install of openSUSE 11.3 32bit GNOME on my notebook and everything runs fine...yet
But there is an issue with the sound playback on mp4's and quicktime (apple trailers) that I was not able to fix.
I added the Packman 11.3 repo via Yast -> Software Repositories -> Add... -> Community Repositories
Then I used zypper to get the related gstreamer-plugins ffmpeg faad vlc w32codec-all libmp4v2...
So far the media playback seem good, except the issue of "no sound with gstreamer related media players on quicktime and mp4"...
I set all available/related/installed packages to "Packman" (Yast -> Software Management), did zypper refresh + zypper up but I am simply not able to get sound from gstreamer...It works fine in VLC though!
Some google and forum research showed that it's an issue that has occurred over the recent years but I could not found a proper working solution.
If I run totem from the terminal I get the following output (plus a windows asking for permission to search for the required codec 'MPEG-4 AAC Decoder'...but it is not able to find one!):

The last Message is interesting "All missing plugins are blacklisted..." hmmm I did not blacklist any plugins...where can you see these blacklist? Is that the point, the plugin is there but blacklisted?

is there any way i can make my sound card go 5.1 and enable a "fill speakers" option? I have an onboard via hd 1705 sound codec as it's listed in my mainboard manual. The sound card it's self appears in the system as aa nvidia hda, and so it's listed in the manual. So my question is, shouldn't it be a via since it has a via hd chip? Anyway, apparently my kmix volume control has very vew options for it. I also have a via tremor pci sound card, but it's not hd. That one has all the options available in the kmix, but the via hd doesn't. I'd prefer using the via hd since it's "high definition". Is there any way i can enable the 5.1 on it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using openSUSE 11.3 with Xfce 4.7.0 and I want to enable automatic login. What I have tried so far:
1) YaST -> User and Group Management -> Expert Options -> Login Settings. This didn't work because I have no "Login Settings" option in this menu.
2) Editing variables "DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN" and "DISPLAYMANAGER_PASSWORD_LESS_LOGIN" via YaST -> /etc/sysconfig Editor. This didn't work too and xdm was still asking about name and password no matter what I set here.
3) I don't know how to configure xdm, so I tried to replace xdm with gdm. Gdm worked, but application "gdmsetup" was missing from my installation (YaST simply don't offer this package) and I don't know how to set up gdm manually, so I ended without autologin again.
Iv tried everything to install the codecs for my system, the one click install, the manual provided for by openSUSE but no luck. All the files were installed correctly but alas no file will play. I need a solid answer. I have 11.2 GNOME on a 32 bit processor
