Debian :: Possible To Get Drivers For M-Audio MobilePre?
Feb 19, 2010
I am looking for a Debian based distribution of Linux to use on my EEEPC901. I am wondering which would be the best? I'm not a very advanced Linux user, when I had Linux on my own computer it was some version of Ubuntu; however I have used Red Hat and SuSE extensively in the past(though this was quite some time ago now). I have Windows XP on the primary drive, while the stuff I do mostly requires it, it's also slow and unstable and doesn't work well with SS drives. I am heavily considering using Linux for casual use and XP when I need to use Windows software. I bought an 8 Gig SD card(one of the faster ones) for the purpose of this. The SS drives in the EEEPC aren't very good so I don't think it'll be a huge performance difference.
I'm also wondering if it's possible that I could also use this on my bigger laptop; like have some way of swapping the drivers etc. when I plug in, if I put it on an SD card. Though that sounds a bit unrealistic. Also; is it possible to get drivers for an M-Audio MobilePre?

Don't know where this issue should go but though it was more to do with software. The issue I am having is that I tried to install Realtek Linux AudioPack 5.15. Once it got installed my soundcard was no longer detected in System > Preferences > Sound. The reason I was trying to install Realtek was due to not being able to get sound working in Wine. But now that I have installed it I'm not getting sound on the desktop and in wine.

I have, for days, been trying to get a Fedora 15 server to send audio output to the system monitor, an ASUS VH242H, via HDMI. The video portion works perfectly, allowing me to appreciate GNOME 3 for the first time. Sound, on the other hand, is non-existent.
From many, many threads on this problem, I have at least been able to provide some info which might help resolve this. Unfortunately, I have now read too much and followed too many suggestions to be able to find my way through the morass. So, once again, I built a completely new system to ensure a clean start.
Note also that to simplify things, I disabled the on-board audio in BIOS so only Nvidia has any sound output capability. Initially, 'alsamixer -V all' identifies the card and the chip as being PulseAudio. That would change if I used the <F6> option but I have not done so to keep things 'clean' at this point. The 'Master' is full on (100<>100), so muting is not a problem. Next, I searched for the device from the output of /proc/asound/card0 which would match the monitor.
The one device associated with the monitor_name is eld#3.0:
monitor_present 1
eld_valid 1
monitor_name ASUS VH242H

Both the kernel driver and the kernel modules are not what I think I should have. The kernel driver should be HDA NVidia for starters, no? Running modprobe -l and looking for nvidia returns:
'kernel/drivers /video/nvidia/nvidiafb.ko'and 'extra/nvidia/nvidia.ko' But I have not attempted anything beyond this point because I am just too confused as to what needs to be done and who or what manages these values effectively.

I cannot get an install past looking for CD on any of the iso's I've tried. I have burned many iso's of other distributions onto a USB Stick and installed them so easily. Yet when it comes to Debian it is always a no go with me.
I think that Debian being up with the times would or should know most people that burn iso's just use an USB Stick it is easier and convenient. Therefore, they'd write the scripts to use them too without the "iso" thinking it is an CD/DVD that it is needing CD / DVD drivers to finish an install else abort.

I installed Debian 8 on my new computer 3 days ago. Everything went fine, until I tried to install the nvidia non free drivers version 352.21 (for a GTX 970M).I read a lot about that, figuring out I had to add the experimental repo. Here's my sources.list for reference :

I have two monitors, a primary crt which I usually run at 100-160hz depending on the resolution, and a secondary lcd which I run at 144hz. I can't set either to anything above 60hz or any respectable resolution.
I'm running debian 8 with gnome. Apparently I can't use propietary drivers with gnome because it isn't supported and I have to use the open source ones. So I used this website as a guide to install drivers: [URL] ....
I tried:
1. Code: Select all# Debian 8 "Jessie"
deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
Which gave me nothing. First line didn't do anything at all, second one didn't work because 'deb' isn't a valid command.
2. Code: Select all# apt-get update
Worked as per usual.
3. Code: Select all# apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-video-ati
Only one installed, and that was xserver. The other ones failed (werent found or something?). Anyway as per instructions i rebooted and ofcourse nothing happened. I am pretty sure since step 1 was probably meant to add to the repository, step 3 wasnt able to complete.
But my concerns are...
1. How am I meant to do step 1 if it isn't a real command
2. Should I (or can I) change to something other than gnome, because I don't think its worth missing out on propietary drivers just to use gnome.
My card is a hd7970.

I have three audio devices on my system;
1. a builtin (broken)
2. an HDMI on my graphics board
3. a USB audio device (i am using this one)
I normally shut off the system each night. Next day, I have to go through the pulse-audio mixer and re-set all of the audio settings. They are apparently not being saved. I've searched the forum for 'save audio' and similar terms but no joy.

Using Iceweasel on Gnome GUI the streaming audio does not work. Just kind of hangs when the Iceweasel player window opens. It used to work on this machine. I am all updated. Also, is there a way to play the streams that like to open their own players on the Movie Player? I have had best luck playing streams on the Movie Player in the past.

I listen to streaming audio a lot. All types of music, news, talk radio, etc.I have found that the Totem movie player is the most reliable player. Rythmbox is good too but seams to drop the streams a little more that Totem. The main problem with Totem is that I find the play list kind of clunky to use.
Q1: Are there better players for streaming audio?
A lot of radio stations now open in there own "players". I don't like all of the advertisements and other bandwidth eating crap in these "players".
Q2: Is there a way to get the URL of the stream from one of these "players" and play it on Totem or Rythmbox?

I am running Debian testing with XFCE desktop and a Logitech C920 webcam. I have installed skype but can not get the microphone to work with Skype (I know the webcam works OK as I have tested it on another PC running windows).
I have Pulseaudio installed, I have installed pavucontrol to check the settings and the microphone is enabled. I have checked alsamixer and the microphone is enabled. All I get when I do the Skype audio test is a low hiss in the background no audio or any distortion to suggest that it is capturing my voice

What do I have to do (i.e. which package do I have to install) to activate the 'Audio' tab in Nautilus? With Debian Lenny, as with Fedora Goddard, it is possible to see ID3 tags when right-clicking on a audio file in Nautilus, but oddly this feature is gone with a fresh Debian Squeeze installation. However, it is still possible to view EXIF informations when right-clicking an image file.

I am new to using debian and have decided to build a Haswell-based i5 NUC (D54250WYK) to run Kodi. I have everything running smoothly until I realised that there is no audio.
I ran the aplay -l command and it only showed
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC283 Analog [ALC283 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
but no HDMI
A lot of people recommend the following commands :
-sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily
-sudo apt-get update
-sudo apt-get install oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms
and then reboot the device, but when ever i try and run it, the last step i get the "E: Unable to locate package oem-audio-hda-dkms" error.

I've dedicated most of today attempting to get some sound out of my Debian Lenny installation and I'm getting nowhere. I've tried a varity of potential solutions and still no peep from the machine. I'm using ALSA (and ran the 'alsaconf' utility with no errors and then used 'alsamixer' confirming that the volumne is set and not muted) for sound playback but nothing works?!? Here's some of the output that may resonate to some people...

I've tried everything that I could find online and installed a variety of alsa related stuff, but at this stage my lack of experience (coming from a Windows background) is really beginning show. The only unexplored thing is that the device is not listed in the xorg.conf file, but there doesn't seem to be many mentions of this online and a possible red herring. The only other thing is that when running the 'alsaconf' utility it does show two cards installed on the system, these are: via82xx and legacy. I've always selected 'via82xx' as the other options prompts 'Probing legacy ISA cards might make your system unstable.' I'm plugging the speakers into the 'green' audio out socket.
Finally, when running videos on mplayer it does report that it is using alsa as the audio output option and it doesn't highlight are errors...Oh yeah - the speakers have been tested and do work.

I just installed Mint Debian version on an old desktop computer, but it doesn't play audio.
At first vlc even had the whole audio menu greyed out; I followed this, downloaded the deb and installed it. It seemingly recognized my card, but upon reboot, everything is still silent - though vlc now has the audio section accessible.
If I go under audio preferences and select hardware, no device is present.
Here's some information. code...
Any idea what to do to get audio? Everything else works, I'd hate having to wipe the partition just for this...

My debian system does not have any wifi drivers unfortunately. I suspect highly that the driver is not in the 3.2 kernel so ideally I'd like to update to a newer kernel.. However, the laptop doesn't have a network port and I don't have a network to usb cable. So in other words: updating the kernel offline using a usb stick..

When I tried to rescue an old laptop that kept crashing (turned out to be HDD failure), a problem with the graphics quickly revealed itself. A graphical install was already impossible, and it looked like the image was starting halfway and wrapping around the screen, together with all kinds of artefacts. It's hard to describe, but impossible to work with. I did notice that all was okay when I booted into GParted live in the safe graphics mode (vga=normal).By the way, the system specs: AMD Turion64, NVidia 7150M.
When I had succesfully installed Debian using the normal non-graphical installer, the same effects showed up as soon as Nouveau was loaded, so I SSH'd into it to uninstall them and install the proprietary NVidia drivers. After purging nouveau and rebooting, the effects were gone! It clearly was a Nouveau issue. However, after I installed NVidia drivers successfully (X also started fine), I wanted to change the resolution using nvidia-settings which prompted:
"You do not appear to be using NVIDIA X driver. Please edit you X configuration file (just run nvidia-xconfig as root), and restart the X server."

I would really like to try and do a Netinstall on my laptop with it. I know I could just download the CD's/a DVD, but I would rather customize it for my laptop, and I've heard that's the fastest way. The problem is that I have to compile the drivers for both my wireless and my wired internet. I have guides to compile both the wireless [URL] and wired [URL] internet. I was wondering if there was a way to compile these drivers in a Netinstall (preferably the wireless, but wired if necessary)?
