View 3 RepliesI recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. The audio did not work prior to updating the system & software so it wasn't the updates. I have Bose Companion 2 Series 2 (Multimedia Speaker System) plugged in. When I was on Windows (I installed Ubuntu on top of it) they worked just fine. My headset (Microsoft LifeChat) work just fine. It is not muted nor are they on low volume.
If Bose Companion 2 require a proprietary driver how would I go about finding an alternative? I checked their website and all the software requires Windows NT+. I have tried reloading ALSA. I have installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras.

i'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 with AsRock p55/pro motherboard (supports bluray audio). I've just hooked up my logitech x-530 5.1 surround sound speakers, but there's no sound. My headphones work fine via the front panel jack. I dont think i've forgotten to plug any cables/pins on the motherboard. I cant install the asrock bios either, because ubuntu can't open the files. I've tried rehooking everything, but nothing seems to work. Could it be that ive forgotten to attach some cables? or is it a program problem?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm well aware this is a common issue among Linux users, but have exausted every method I've researched.
On Xubuntu, I have a small set of USB speakers. Now, the system does detect the output. The mute and volume controls on the speakers work properly (I can see the sound bar move on the screen when doing so).
I've tried various applications such as pavucontrol, to try and fix the problem.
When I try playing audio, sound bars are moving in pavucontrol, but alas, no actual audio from the speakers.
I am fed up of listening to my (Windows XP) gaming computer through headphones so I want to get it hooked to the stereo.
Rather than use a heck of a lot of wire, I can sit my Ubuntu 9.10 netbook on top of the stereo and stream the audio across WiFi.
So, ideally what I am after is something to capture the outgoing audio on the Windows computer, stream it across the wifi to the Ubuntu netbook and finally play it through the speakers.
I recently installed Ubuntu alongside my Windows 7 and everything is great except the sound. Whenever I play sounds the audio only comes out of my built in speakers and the headphone jack does nothing. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 on a Toshiba Sattelite L655D-S5066.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently switched my primary desktop over from Windows 7 to Fedora 14. I successfully installed the OS on to my hard drive and booted up, following which I installed all of the updates and rebooted. After my first reboot I downloaded the 10.11 Radeon driver and installed it (because the 10.12 was having an md5 hash issue), the install was (supposedly) successful, but when I restarted my computer it first progresses to this screen (copied from softpedia) and then goes black for a second, and then returns to that screen and halts at the end of the progess bar and does nothing. I am looking for help to get back into my system.
View 3 Replies View Relatedso my problem is that i can't disable the speakers on my laptop when i plug in my headphones. in other words, i get sound from both the headphones and the speakers, when the expected behavior is to disable the speakers when headphones are plugged in, and enable the speakers when headphones are unplugged..
i've been looking around the forum and google, and i found a way to adjust the speaker and headphone volume manually in alsamixer. To adjust the headphone volume on alsamixer, i can raise or lower volume using the "Front" volume bar. To adjust the speaker volume, i raise or lower volume on the "Speaker" volume bar.
so, it's cool to know that i can do this manually, but i'm sure there's an option i can put in alsa-base.conf to automate this. i just can't seem to find that option...
anyway, i'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit...and here's my alsa-base.conf file

Most of the BT stuff I see involves connecting a headset to the PC...I'm not seeing much for what I want to do. I have a motorola Droid, and it's pairing via bluetooth to my thinkpad just fine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit.What I want to do is pair the PC to my phone and have the PC act as the headset, i.e., the audio from my phone comes out my PC speakers. Ultimately I'm trying to record audio from my phone, voicemails from Verizon that I'd like to save to audio files. A couple years ago I was able to do something like this with a Thinkpad in WinXP, and record audio using Audacity. I'm not seeing how to make the PC work as a headset.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently migrated back to Linux after a 2 year stint with Mac OS X. One feature I liked from the Mac side was that there were 2 audio modes in terms of volume and mute. For example, I can mute my laptop speakers (just press mute), plug in headphones, set volume, and watch a movie. If I accidentlaly unplug the headphones, sound wouldn't come out of the laptop speakers since they are muted.
Was wondering whether this is available in Ubuntu? I wouldn't want to bother the office or the people I'm flying on the plane with.
I've dedicated most of today attempting to get some sound out of my Debian Lenny installation and I'm getting nowhere. I've tried a varity of potential solutions and still no peep from the machine. I'm using ALSA (and ran the 'alsaconf' utility with no errors and then used 'alsamixer' confirming that the volumne is set and not muted) for sound playback but nothing works?!? I have an onboard Realtek HD soundcard which I have 2 2.1 sound systems hooked into. The rear two speakers play audio simultaneously i.e running the terminal sound test "front left" and "front right" come out of both the rear speakers at the same time. I am running Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 with all of the latest updates. May be unrelated, but also there seems to be a very large amount of lag when playing system sounds. Takes a few seconds after the event has occurred for the associated sound to play.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am new to fedora. In fact I have not even installed it yet. I have been using a different distribution for some time now. But it has just had an update, and with that I lost the ability to have analog loopback. I need it because I need to record sound from my speakers, and my mic at the same time, and my soundcard does not seem to allow them to be mixed (or at least I could never figure out how). I have been using the analog loopback to add the mic to the speaker sound, then splitting the speaker sound to also feed back into the line in. I then recorded from the line in to get both the speaker sounds, and the mic. But now I guess alsa has taken the analog loopback out, so I need to find another way.
So I am trying out distributions, and I decided to try fedora. I am just running the live cd right now, and I found that if I installed paprefs (pulse audio preferences) there was an option to loop the audio to the speakers. However it does not loopback the sound. I tried the same think in linux mint, and it worked, but but after about a min of this, the sound got distorted to the point where I could not even understatnd what I said in the mic. This happened all of a sudden, not a gradual thing, but one second it was fine, the next it was very bad.
I have just installed Linux Mint on my MSI EX623 laptop,and i cant get sound on internal speakers...only on external ones...on external works just fine...i have tried all but just doesnt work...

After installing everything seems to be working fine except that i have audio problem.

I thought it was a driver issue, but after messing around with the ALSA mixer a lot, it turned out that when I enabled headphones(or disabled, honestly not sure) that my headphones worked, and when I took them out the speakers worked. Then when I rebooted for whatever reason, only the speakers(built-in) worked. Really, I'm not sure why this is.
When I got them to work there was a switch for the headphones in the graphical mixer(which is what I used, not the ncurses[?] ALSA thing), but I can't seem to find that anymore. It's not a major issue, it just puts me off watching videos and listening to music because my laptop speakers are really low quality. I'd go out to buy a pair of external speakers, but obviously with the audio jack not working, this could be problematic.
I guess I could buy USB external speakers but then the probability of Slackware having pre-installed audio drivers for a cheap generic brand of speakers is so low it doesn't justify the effort of going and buying some, nor the money that would be spent. Willing to enter any commands/w.e. I'll be on Slackware all the time 'cause I need a Linux system right now.
I have had sound working for months but recently I plugged in a USB headset and to get it to work, I had to open pulse audio and change to it. I later unplugged it, turned off the computer and have now restarted it (without the headset) and now I get no sound through the computer speakers! What do I do?

I used the Pulse Audio manager that shows up in the taskbar when you select it from the Kickoff Launcher.But now it's showing "Null Audio" and under "Sound" it shows "Audio Devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG" Under System Settings -> Multimedia, it lists Pulse Audio Sound Server.Under PulseAudio Manager ->Devices tab it has Null Output as the only device.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a Lenovo L512 laptop with Intel HD Audio (Realtek ALC269 / Intel G45 DEVIBX) which was recently upgraded to Squeeze. I've been having trouble using the headphones on this machine, as the speakers continued to play while the headphones were connected. I normally use KDE, and the available mixer only offers one channel. I thought I might be able to manually silence the speakers by using the command line tool alsamixer. Unfortunately, alsamixer has a channel for the headphones, but it doesn't do anything, only master volume is controllable. By luck I decided to play around with Gnome today and to my great surprise, System -> Preferences -> Sound offers complete control over all functions of the audio hardware. Does anyone know how I could get these features working under KDE?

There is only one strange thing that is happening, when I plug in my headphones I get audio coming out of my laptop and my headphones! View 10 Replies View Relatedi'm running fedora 12 on a dell dimension 4600. audio seems to work reasonably well for things like flash animation but i cannot for the life of me figure out how to route line-in audio through the system for output to my external speakers. on the sound preferences application on the gnome desktop: if i select the hardware tab and analog stereo input is selected, then i go to the input tab and have analog line-in selected, i see the v-u meter above moving around as though there is actually an input. but, i hear no sound. the output tab shows "dummy output" with no other choices. to get audio working for videos and other flash sites, i have to change to hardware->analog surround 5.0 output. such documentation as i have been able to find doesn't seem to describe my setup well, and in any case, i find all this fidgeting with hardware configurations an immense step back from the old alsa software. if this is going to be the future of linux audio, can i say, please, no?
I have headphones plugged into the computer but the sound is still coming through the speakers.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm a new user of Linux and just recently installed Debian 8 on my computer, an Emachines W3118. My problem is that the audio went out a couple of days ago and I don't know WHY it went out, no audio, and HOW to get it back on. I tried several command line methods that didn't work, probably because they didn't completely relate to the problem with me being a Linux beginner and all. When I manually turn the knob on the speaker up, I can hear noise to where the speakers sound like they're physically operational, but with no output or input.
