Debian Installation :: 7.5 - No Audio Through HDMI
May 31, 2014
I get picture through the hdmi connection of my Radeon HD 4670 card, but when I tell the system to use the audio not only do I not get anything it also speeds up any video currently playing.
I am new to using debian and have decided to build a Haswell-based i5 NUC (D54250WYK) to run Kodi. I have everything running smoothly until I realised that there is no audio.
I ran the aplay -l command and it only showed **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC283 Analog [ALC283 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
but no HDMI
A lot of people recommend the following commands : -sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily -sudo apt-get update -sudo apt-get install oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms and then reboot the device, but when ever i try and run it, the last step i get the "E: Unable to locate package oem-audio-hda-dkms" error.
I have Audio and Video over HDMI separately, but when I try to watch a movie, I just have Video.NVIDIA HDMI is my default, I'm using "Debian lenny amd64" and kernel is "2.6.32-trunk" on "Studio XPS 13" with "KDE 4.3".
I am trying to get audio to play in tv/monitor via HDMI cable. It seems ALSA does not recognize my nVidia audio device and can only use the onboard audio device. Here's some relevant info I have collected:
I recently switched over one of my Ubuntu machines to Debian Wheezy. On the Ubuntu system I was able to get the HDMI audio working by adding radeon.audio=1 to grub. I've tried this on this system to no avail. The fglrx-legacy-driver causes underscan and I'd like to avoid it if possible for convenience.
Things I've tried:
fglrx-legacy-driver - Introduced underscan while not solving the problemradeon.audio=1 in grub boot line - No effectGoogling for several hours - There's a lot of topics about this, but most are old and irrelevant, and the ones that are current enough didn't solve my issue.Yelling at it - HDD light blinked a few times, no change lspci shows
I am running a small Debian Jessie installation on my Zotac Nano AD10 (based on AMD's E-350, Radeon 6310). I use it as an MPD server, it outputs to my receiver over HDMI.
Up until kernel 3.11 that works fine. My GRUB command line looks like this (default grub.cfg file):
Playback device is plughw:0,3 Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels Using 16 octaves of pink noise Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz) Buffer size range from 64 to 16384 Period size range from 32 to 8192 Using max buffer size 16384
[Code] ...
I've tried fixing this repeatedly (3.12, 3.13, 3.14) but everytime i find myself returning to 3.11 because that keeps working.... Some posts suggest running xrandr could get it working, but this is a headless installation, so I cannot use xrandr.
For reference, OpenELEC works on this same system (separate install), and they're up to 3.14 as well. Never had a problem with OpenELEC and the audio not working.
When i was using windows it shows up and works, so thus it has to have the hardware onboard and the support for it sans the driver. It's incapable of working, i don't know why but it's not listing it, and it's just not working with it. I've tried a million times before to find a fix and they only have them for the desktop drivers and not the mobile ones. I was glad to see that i could finally use a second monitor correctly in linux now but the hdmi audio thing is driving me loopy and there doesn't seem to be anyone else who has posted with this issue before.

I've a problem with my AsRock Core and my audio over HDMI. Trying to get it work now for over 2 months. On Ubuntu 10.04 it was working with the offical Realtek HDA Intel driver for Linux but on Ubuntu 10.10 the driver installation failed.
Code: Linux myMachine 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux aplay -l Code: **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
I recently put together a small computer on which I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. The plan here was to test the motherboard out for use in a HTPC running linux, and using smplayer and vdpau (not exactly sure if that's the way to say it), I'm running video just fine out of my HDMI cable, but I'm not having any luck getting any audio.
My motherboard is one of those Zotac Ion Itx G-E with an NVidia Geforece 9400 thingamajig. Customer reviews on New Egg said it handled Linux and Mythbuntu well, and that was my reason for making this purchase. When I recieved my motherboard, I loaded Ubuntu as the instructions said I should, and then I attempted to load the disc with the drivers and that failed. Apparently, the disc was designed to run in Windows. I downloaded drivers from the Zotac website which were supposedly designed for linux, however I haven't had any luck installing these. The terminal keeps saying I need the installer.
I am big fan of Ubuntu and presently doing a lot of research on switching over to Ubuntu from Windows environment.
First things first My desktop basic hardware specs Motherboard: GIGABYTE MA790XT-UD4P CPU: AMD PHENON 545 GPU: NVIDIA GT240 (1GB) RAM: 4GB POWER: 650W HDD: 1TB
I am using Win 7 64bit and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit Ubuntu installation went smooth and it got updated...
Everything is fine except couple of things
1. No audio output from HDMI.
2. No Multitasking.
I will elaborate the above issues
1. My comp display is my LCD TV which is connected by HDMI cable, usually I get sound from TV speakers when I use Win 7, however in Ubuntu there is option to select the sound output by HDMI but even though after selecting nothing happens...
2. Whenever I am to listen to music in Ubuntu and if I am doing some other work like copying files or opening multiple files or burning DVD's, music gets stuck or it plays pause by pause...so multitasking problems...
I have been trying for a while now to get the audio over HDMI working from my PNY G210 graphics card and mythtv but with no luck.
I have followed this guide [URL]
prior to following this I only had my motherboards on board audio showing up but I am now at the stage that I can see the HDMI audio and select it and un mute it but still cannot get any sound out of it.
As a side effect after following the steps from the link above, now every time I boot the computer up my on board audio is muted so I need to un mute it from sound preferences.
This is my audio config as it stands: scott@MythtvFrontend:~$ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog] Subdevices: 1/1

The mother board is a an ASUS MN32-SLI deluxe and I have 2 graphics cards in it, a 9600GT to run the 2 monitors connected and a G210 which I would like to use to connect to my TV using the HDMI output. At the moment I am using the VGA output from the G210 to the TV and a separate audio out from the computer which was working fine but the audio is now always muted on startup.
I don't think it is an issue with my mythtv settings as I cannot get any audio over the HDMI using speaker-test (on board analogue audio works ok).
I have a Mythbuntu 9.0.4 fresh install and seem to be having issues with audio over HDMI. I can get audio over the headset output (green round port).
I am guessing this probably has something to do with the default sound card that is used to output when I play something, say internet radio. how to configure Ubuntu to use the HDMI output as default.
The motherboard is: [URL]
Output of the following: $ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB HDA ATI SB at 0xfe7f4000 irq 16 1 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfe9e8000 irq 19
I have a Nvidia GTS 450 GPU with HDMI. I want to have the audio on my TV that's connected with HDMI cable. But for some reason I'm not able to get the audio working. The card has its own audio chip. In Yast and pulseaudio I can see the card. But when I select it for playing audio it will not play on my TV.
Changing the cable doesn't work and don't know what to do. Every thing on the internet I have tried doesn't work. Here are some settings (if you need more just ask): Using openSuSE 11.4
I've got a new machine with an Nvidia GeForce 210 graphics card with HDMI output. I'm trying to get sound to go out that HDMI cable, but although the device shows up on lspci, I can't get it acknowledged by aplay -l, which lists the audio devices known to the audio driver.
lspci shows (in part): 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)01:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1) The first is the motherboard audio, and it works fine. The second (I assume) is the graphics card with HDMI. But aplay -l lists only the motherboard analog and S/PDIF outputs:

I can't see how I'm going to select a device that the drivers think isn't there. how to make that device visible to the sound drivers? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with a 2.6.32 stock kernel. The Nvidia driver version is 195.36.24.
I'm able to get HDMI audio/video perfectly when I'm playing a dvd on mythbuntu. However, If I try to play the ripped version or any other video that is on the hard drive, I get no Audio?
I've checked alsamixer to make sure the device isn't muted.
If I use vlc media player I don't have any audio either. Is there a way to enable hdmi audio as default?
I've been googling and searching these forums and I can't find a fix. I just discovered that I have a headphone jack on the bottom of my monitor and it would be a lot more convenient to use that rather than the jack on my tower. However, when I switch to HDMI audio output I don't hear anything. I now it's not my cable because it works on my HDTV and throughput audio fine.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 with the Asus M4A78T-E mobo with integrated ATI HD 3300 graphics. I am running the official drivers from ATI, ATI Catalyst 10.3 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver, the latest and greatest, not the one from Synaptic. I know this is a bad time to be looking for a fix since 10.4 is out in 8 days but if anyone knows a quick fix that would be great.
I currently installed ubuntu 10.04 and I am having trouble getting sound from my monitor. The monitor that I have is a HANNS-G HH251. It is connected to a Sapphire 4850 Video card through a HDMI wire. The monitor has audio when I boot it in windows7, but there is no audio when I use ubuntu 10.04.
I am running 10.04 with an integrated Radeon HD3200 card. When I set up the tv through hdmi, the sound works perfectly; however, when I switch to analog audio to play something else, the next time I try to use hdmi audio I get nothing. It shows to have good level through Pulse Audio Volume Control - shows like there is a sound coming through it, but I get no audio through the tv. The only way I can fix this is by uninstalling proprietary drivers and reverting back to generic configuration and then reinstalling proprietary drivers. I have to revert back to generic in order to get the sound working again.
I have a dell 1525 laptop with ubuntu 10.10 . Just made the switch from win vista . Everything seems to be perfect, wireless, video, ect. However no audio on my onboard hdmi port. The video is displayed perfect runs very smooth. This could be my lack of knowledge on ubuntu just not understanding what settings to change maybe no driver for the hdmi audio. I would like to add that the laptop onboard speakers work fine.
I have an ECS A785GM-M and the integrated HD4200 HDMI audio was working out of the box on a clean Ubuntu 10.04 install. After the updates and all, everything still worked just fine for a month.
Then, I installed a HD4870 with ATI DVI to HDMI adapter and the sound is not working (it works flawlessly on Windows 7, so it is not the hardware). The creepy stuff is that on Pulseaudio GUI configuration, everything looks right: ATI 48x0 HDMI is selected as output and when some sound is playing the bar moves, although there is no sound coming from the TV speakers.
I tried editing /etc/pulse/default.pa as suggested on this link, but it didn't helped. I'm kind lost here, since it looks that there is nothing wrong and yet, it is not working.
Because of some kind of mismatch between the latest X-server and nvidia drivers which crashes recent versions of the xserver, I've downgraded with a clean install of mythbuntu 10.04.
Trouble is, now I'm getting no sound through the hdmi to the tv. When I try aplay -l I get info for sound card 0 (HDA Intel), but nothing is showing for soundcard 1e So it's not seeing the card, so I can't configure it.
I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. After normal install process, it invited me to install ATI proprietary drivers (because I have an ATI Radeon HD4850 video card). Everything seems to work out of the box, except the HDMI sound. The HDMI video works OK, and also the normal sound using the onboard soundcard work OK. By my knowledge I think I have setup the audio properties correctly. Some screen-shots attached. What happens when I switch the output to HDMI is no audio signal on the TV. The HDMI works OK (both sound and video) on my Win7 64 bit install.
I have a G62 HP laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I have updated alsa and everything else I can think of. When I have an HDMI coard plugged in, sound only comes out of the computer (I use VLC).
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 in a Dell XPS M1330 laptop with Intel gma X3100 integrated graphics. I occasionally use it for watching movies in an LCD TV, however when I connect it I can get it to output video fine, but audio is a no go, when I select hdmi audio in the sound options I get no sound.
I've followed some instructions that I've found searching this forum and what I've concluded was that my audio plays only from the HDMI port of the VGA... Changing the settings around to use the SoundBlaster card does nothing. I've installed pavucontrol and setting the HDMI port to profile Off does nothing. When enabled the bar under the levels seems to play music. (It shows activity) But when I send the stream to the Sound Blaster the bar stays 100% and doesn't do anything. (no activity and no sound). I can't verify that the HDMI port actually plays out audio. I'm new to Fedora and linux all together. I've tried Fedora in the past F11 I think but that's all.
The "cat /proc/asound/cards" command produces this: 0 [HDMI]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfbaec000 irq 33 1 [Generic]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic HD-Audio Generic at 0xfbbfc000 irq 16 The "/sbin/lsmod | grep -c snd" command produces this: 12 "Yum update" has been executed several times without the need to update anything.
I have recently added a Zotac Zone 240 (Nvidia) card in my system replacing a Nvidia 7600 card. What I have noticed is that I cannot play audio over HDMI. The Zotac audio hardware is detected by openSuse 11.2 but the KDE Sound does not show this Nvidia/HDMI sound as a possible audio device. How to add it as the normal add and look for device option does not have this specific Nvidia audio device as an option to add.
I was running Ubuntu 9.04 and just upgraded to 9.10 recently. I see many others are having problems with their sound. I too do not have sound. I did get sound running briefly with an Alsa update, but it was muffled. In trying many other fixes, I again have no sound and can not resolve it. I am thinking of burning a new cd and doing a fresh install and starting over.
My lap top is an MSI GT725 US model with an HD4850 mobility graphics card. I dual boot between Vista 32 bit and Ubuntu.
Has anyone else had any luck getting the Realtek ATI sound working in 9.10?
I want my computer to be used as a DVD/BD player, and as of recently it has rejected its windows install and refuses to reinstall. Ubuntu 9.10 installed without problem, but when I select the X1200 (hdmi) audio output via the top right icon no sound comes out. I've searched this topic and one theory was that if i ran ALSA mixer the x1200 audio might be muted by default; it was not muted. I've also been told to update my catalyst, but using synaptics packet manager to download the catalyst control center, when I run it I get the message no supported hardware found. Is there any way to get this to work, or am I stuck with my speakers/3.5mm jack?
