Debian won't display Japanese characters properly, it shows them as symbols. Is there a language pack or a particular browser plugin I need to install? It's sort of a noobish question, but I looked for something related to this issue in my Package Manager, and didn't find anything that seemed suitable/related.
View 2 RepliesI recently intalled Debian lenny and I'm having issues with some of the unicode characters. Instead of displaying the symbols properly it shows one of the following depending on font/app:
1) Square outline with four letters/numbers arranged inside
2) Just a blank square outline
3) Just a blank space
I haven't been able to test all possible characters, but from a quick check it seems that Cyrillic works properly, Japanese doesn't.A few Google searches later and I'm no wiser on how to fix the issue. Any help?

All Chinese and Japanese characters are displayed as blocks of hexadecimals, except Japanese kana. How can I make them displayed correctly?

I've tried to change the font that the gnome terminal uses, to no benefit.
My default locale is en_us.utf8 and I am about to install every package that contains the prefix ttf

I have the Japanese language pack installed and I have ibus and anthy installed for input method management. It all works fine and dandy. Except that some kanji aren't right. Like 社会 the first of the two kanji displayed for me is the archaic version. I can't seem to figure out why this is happening. I can only assume it's picking up data from the wrong font package, but I'm not sure how to manage this. Happens in ibus for my own input and on websites like www.jisho.org where my input was unrelated.Using a fairly fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 lucid, I used scim for IM in Karmic but still stuck to the default japanese language support pack. Worked fine until lucid.

View 13 Replies View RelatedFirefox is having trouble displaying characters. At times, a web page will display only partial of a certain character, and it will affect every character on the screen. In other words, sometimes when I load a page, the bottom half of all the 'i's or 'r's are missing. The problem persists when I refresh the page, and resolves on its own. It will happen to most web pages. Also, at times, a white or black stripe will run through some characters, usually a heading title on the page. I'm running Firefox 3.6.10 on Ubuntu 10.10. I did a complete reinstall of Ubuntu 10.10 when it came out (i.e. I reformatted and installed 10.10) and have been having this problem since then. Never had the problem with 10.04, which I had been running since May. Firefox and Ubuntu are both updated currently.
Please note the attachments, where in one there is a problem with the letter 'i', and in the other, on the Heading "Search New Posts" there are white lines running through the words.
So far, as a former Chrome user on Windows, I am enjoying Chromium. However, there is one glaring problem that is bugging me, and is disrupting my usage of the browser.
Chromium will not show Japanese fonts properly. It's not that everything shows up as boxes. The problem is that certain characters will show in Japanese, and certain will show in Korean, thereby making the Japanese text unreadable. Copying and pasting into gedit allows me to read the Japanese text, and Firefox never had this problem, however, within Chromium, this is unreadable.

Has anyone else had this problem, and fixed it? I have installed the language packs and have tried setting things to different unicode fonts and changing the encoding to unicode and even Japanese, and continue to get these errors.
I have installed Fedora 12 in my dell studio 15 with screen 15.6 The images are not displayed properly, some times they displayed some wider than their actual size. Is there any video and display driver available for Fedora 12 which can improve its display quality.

I have linux firefox installed on my notebook, and after having a bit of a problem with it, I did a full factory reset back to all the original settings. Now when I connect to the internet, some of the pages now are not displayed properly. For instance, when visiting E-bay, the listings look fine, but my E-bay page is all listed down the page, (if that makes sense) and I cannot look at any of the photos. MSN is also, how can I put this, spread out across the page. I have done a live update to see if that makes a difference, but no joy.

While playing videos i cant bring any other windows in front. The video always stays in front. Its not the entire window just the video clip alone. Moreover the rightclick menu is also not displayed properly while playing a video. Same goes while running a webcam application. i have attached few screenshots.I have a dell core 2 duo machine with ati radeon card. I m using the classic gnome session.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI access a linux server shell via putty, but many of the keys I use do not translate across, up, down, left and right all are seen as ^[[A, ^[[B, ^[[D and ^[[C; But so is C-up, C-down, C-left and C-right. And enter is seen as C-j (which move down to the next line), and backspace is seen as C-h, which is backwards delete.
How can I stop these keys being translated into other keys (so I can, for example, configure C-h and backspace to perform two different functions) and what's doing this translation (Putty, the kernel, the shell)?
The code below prints garbage if I use puts() but it is fine if I use printf() instead (see sample of output at the bottom of this post). The odd thing is that the mess always starts after exactly eight properly printed characters. That sort of regularity can't be a coincidence, can it? It almost looks like an encoding issue (I'm using UTF-8) but if it really is, then I don't understand why the printf() is unaffected.

scim-anthy seems to have been installed perfectly... however, ctrl-space or any other combinations that i'm use to don't activate it... i see the keyboard icon, i can go in set up the environment in it but... i can't get the japanese language bar to show up so I can type in Japanese.

View 1 Replies View RelatedActually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...
I've been looking for a way to add Japanese language support to Debian. I need to be able to type and read Japanese for school. I've asked my Linux professor, and he wasn't sure of how to do it... =p
Edit: I've just figured out how to do this. (All you have to do in install a Japanese font). The only problem is I can't seem how to figure out how to type using Romaji and have it convert to Kana automatically, rather than having it have a Japanese keyboard layout. For example, when I type "A", it should show up as ア, and when I enter "KA" it should show up as カ.

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust done a yum update and emacs's fonts seem very strange. Additionally all "" characters are displayed as a bizarre horizontally barred "W". Edit: I think it's nothing to do with emacs but with the fonts update. The default fonts are now "Baemuk Gulin", by changing them (SHIFT-LEFT_MOUSE) to, eg, Arial I can display things correctly. But I think the times fonts are now missing. Very strange.

By contrast, In Wheezy, when using anthy for example, I can see ibus preferences icon where I can configure ibus and anthy. This doesn't show up in Jessie.
AFAIK this is coused either by: - I installed some PostScript utilities - I copied ~/.fonts to /usr/local/share/fonts following how I can restore my Debian. I'm writing to you from WindowsPS taking that screenshot and making it available was fun
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of Debian 5.04 Stable. It detects my wireless card with a RT61 chipset and gives me the option to select a wireless network through the network-manager icon in the upper panel, yet no wireless networks are displayed. So, how do I fix this and get the ability to connect to my network? I have tried connecting manually but it refuses to connect. No errors, it just does nothing and reverts to roaming mode.
I believe the exact model of my card is an Edimax EW 7128G.
New to Linux in the last year, used Debian Wheezy off and on for a time - trying to build a system up from a minimum net-install, just to learn more about it.
I have a niggling little problem - either of understanding or configuration. I started with the min install and installed X using apt-get or aptitude. Then installed JWM, which I would start from the console via startx. I really liked this setup, since it was simple and I knew what was going on. This was all on Wheezy.
After the upgrade to Jessie (via dist-upgrade), I would get messages popping up "on top of" the console login when I booted. Stuff like "b43-loading firmware …" would pop up on screen while I was typing my login/password. This was kind of disconcerting (seemed like something must be misconfigured) but didn't effect functionality at all.
Eventually I decided to try a display manager, since that would (I thought) avoid the whole console login process and thus the weird overlapping messages. I installed LightDM through aptitude and it works great, but the console login is still displayed first (briefly, maybe 3-4 seconds) before the LightDM greeter takes over the screen.
It is there just long enough to confuse the unwary, who start typing their login name only to have the screen replaced by the LightDM login screen and have to start over. Obviously this isn't a big deal (everything works fine), but since the whole point of this project was to understand, I'm very curious if this is normal behavior (videos I've seen of folks installing Debian seem to show boot messages jumping straight to the DM without showing:

I originally installed Debian and configured it the way I want it without any problems. It was working perfectly and I was happy. I then tried openSuse. I did not like it and re-installed Debian five hours later. Now I have a strange problem. This is the third re-install. With the first two, after installing a few fonts the system says the fonts are present, but they cannot be displayed. I only get empty rectangles. The fonts are not available in office and there is no text at all on the internet. Only photographs and a few icons. This forum for example, only has lines separating the posts.
I do not know why there is a problem, because I am configuring the system the same as the first time; install scim and add a few fonts. The founts are not in packages, but I need them for some of the work I do in office. Since Debian uses this strange permissions system where the user is not considered the owner of his or her computer, I use gksu nautilus. I makes no difference if I leave the permissions of the fount folder as root or change it to me. I am completely at a loss. As I mentioned, I am doing the same thing I did the first time, so there should not be any problems.
