I am new to linux... and I have Installed Debian as my default OS replacing Ubuntu.
I have Installed Plymouth:
# apt-get install plymouth
# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --list
# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme THEME
# update-initramfs -u
Plymouth does not work. What went wrong? or what more should I do to make it work. Also how do I install themes to plymouth, which are not there in the theme package? I have come across this theme I really like but it is in tar.gz and I am looking for some guidance from the forum to run tar.gz packages.

I am new to Debian (and Linux). I just finish to install minidlna to feed my TV with my Debian Jessie PC but I cannot make minidlna to start. I installed minidlna using synaptic. No error shown. I went to the config file to fill the parameters needed.
I started minidlna using the command line /etc/init.d/minidlna start and got the following each time :
XYZ@bureau:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/minidlna start

Code: Select all# plymouth-set-default-theme --list
details
joy
lines
spacefun
text
tribar
These are the plymouth themes available.
I've tried to preview every themes (using this script [URL[....), but they're all the same, just three dots except for "details" and "tribar". I've tried to use one of those three dots theme too and yes the bootsplash is three dots.
I've opened /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spacefun/ and saw that it shouldn't be like that. It should be something with blue background and Debian logo.
I've used this Wiki page as reference: [URL] .... I'm using Jessie.

I installed (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) on both my laptop and desktop. After I installed plymouth and some themes, on the laptop I entered into the terminal to steup and activate the theme like so:
Code: Select all<USER>@<USER>-Aspire-5336:~$ su -
Password:
root@<USER>-Aspire-5336:~# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --list
aurora-borealis
debian-logo
debian-sunrise-blue
debian-sunrise-mono
debian-vizta
[CODE] ....
It wouldn't load the plymouth theme. Now I installed (debian-jessie-8.0.0-amd64-DVD [stable]) only on the laptop so far, and used the same process as with (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) for installing plymouth and when it got to where it said it was missing firmware I fallowed the:
Code: Select allroot@<USER>-Aspire-5336:~# apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree
It loaded the firmware just fine. But after I...
Code: Select allupdate-initramfs -u
...and then rebooted the system, the plymouth theme didn't load just like the desktop when I installed (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) on it. I looked at the /etc/plymouth/plymouthd.conf and it reads:
Code: Select all# Administrator customizations go in this file
#[Daemon]
#Theme=text
#ShowDelay=0
[Daemon]
Theme=debian-sunrise-blue

I've been trying to setup Plymouth on Debian Squeeze, but have only been partially successful: Plymouth works with shutdown (i.e. I see Plymouth after I tell the computer to shut down), but not when I start up my computer (before it reaches GDM). In other words, Plymouth seems to work with my graphics, but for some reason does not show up at startup (not even briefly, as far as I can tell). I've searched the forums and followed this advice, as well as the instructions found here: [URL] but neither of those worked. I'm running Debian Testing (Squeeze) on a Thinkpad X41, which uses "Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller" for graphics.

When I login in the kde login in screen starts, but then I hear a beep and it freezes. If I hit ctrl-alt-f2 and log in and then type startx, a blinking curser appears and nothing happens.I am trying to set up VirtualBox to run Windows 7 and I am having trouble getting some usb devices to be recognized in Windows. I tryed following the advice of this link URL...After I added the group vboxusers to my user account and restarted the computer, this problem started.
I ran the command Code: Select alldeluser jrchristophel vboxusers, and I get the response back Code: Select allyou may not remove the user from their primary group.
The other things I did that might have caused this problem was that I installed virtual guest additions for VirtualBox, and one other addition that was needed for the USB functionality with in VirtualBox. I can't remember the name of that which I installed.I have looked at some of the logs in /var/logs.

My room mate is trying to use an old Dell he has as a print server. After much twisting his arm, I was able to convince him to go with Debian, which, I would install. I used a 5.0.4 Net Install CD I had, and included Desktop Environment (he needs a GUI), and Print Server. Basically, as usually happens when I install Debian, I am having trouble getting X to work. Heres what the errors look like after X fails:
Ring End Space: 24 wanted 32
Fatal server error: lockup
Waiting for X server to begin accepting connections giving up.
xinit: Connection reset by peer (errno 104): Unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

I have been trying to install Squeeze from the 6.0.1a KDE CD-1 plus the Debian repos. I just cannot get X to work. I get similar bad results to those mentioned by other users having similar problems, but none of the suggested fixes works.
Basic hardware information:
Desktop PC, whole 40 GB disk used for install
Graphics card: none Video controller on motherboard: VIA Technologies S3 UniChrome VGA controller (about 8 years old)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 1280 x 1024 (about 8 years old)
Some things I've already tried: in rescue mode, as root, in /etc/X11X -configuremove file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf basically everything mentioned in threads in past two months regarding users who cannot get X to work reinstalling 100x with every choice for the installer I can think of
What happens: when doing the install, contrary to expectation, I am never prompted for any of the hardware information which the documentation at debian.org says I should have on hand (is that a good sign or a bad sign?)
No matter how I try to do the install,I always seem to get a nongraphical installation, so I try this: as root:apt-get install xorg in /etc/X11X -configthen move generated file (which looks like X didn't try to create an actual configuration file) to /etc/X11/xorg.config as non-root user:startx I get black screen (or a tiny tiny konsole at upper left) and system hangs
How can I tell whether this an X misconfiguration? How can I fix it? How can I tell whether I simply need a driver? Where do I look? How can I tell whether my hardware is simply incompatible with Squeeze? What do I need to replace? Do I need to get a new monitor in order to use Squeeze? Do I need to buy a new motherboard with newer video controller? Do I need to buy a graphics card? Which?

X won't start (awesome WM) after upgrading to jessie. It seems to startup up, then just stops. I'm running startx from the command line after logging in. The xorg log (bottom) looks good and I see an exit code of zero.
I do see this in sysout:
Code: Select alldebian xf86TokenToOptinfo: table is NULL
Googled around but I can't find anything specific on this one.
I'm not using any xorg.conf, as booting into a linux rescue cd everything works ok

I installed libreoffice from the official Debian repository. Even after a clean installation of Debian Jessie, Libreoffice started and ran only once. After that, when LO was started, it gave an error message: "Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module".I installed "canberra-gtk-module." From then on, LO never gave any error message in terminal. The banner flashes across the screen for a moment and then disappears.
I deleted ~/.config/libreoffice folder and started LO again. Each time the command "libreoffice" is run in terminal, it creates the configuration files in ~/.config folder.I created a new user to check if LO would run. It does run when a new user account is created. But the problem keeps coming back.
After uninstalling libreoffice, I tried installing openoffice 4. Even openoffice 4 wouldn't start. The banner would just appear for a moment.

I have been using bumblebee on my Optimus Laptop for a long time.I think I have this problem since the last Xorg upgrade, some months ago. The upgrade notes warned that Xorg now runs on userspace, and that configuration files are now read from the user (although I haven't noticed that). Then optirun ceased to work. As I'm using sid, I'm used to things being broken sometimes, so I simply let it go waiting for an upgrade that would fix it. Since this upgrade (either to Xorg or to bumblebee) is not coming, I have searched on the Internet, and I'm surprised that many people have had problems with bumblebee, but no one seems to be having the same exact error (see below).
I have tried everything (everything my limited knowledge and my internet searches allow me). I have tried with nvidia and nouveau drivers, but I get more or less the same result.
Code: Select all$ sudo systemctl status bumblebeed
● bumblebeed.service - Bumblebee C Daemon
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/bumblebeed.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since mié 2015-12-30 09:30:34 CET; 20min ago
[code]....
It seems Xorg is failing but is not giving any information about the failure, no message, which is different to the problems I have found in the Web.
I have purged bumblebee packages to assure I'm using default configuration files. I have added rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1 to GRUB_ CMDLINE_ LINUX_ DEFAULT as instructed on some howtos.

I asked the question on LQ, but since activity related to Debian there is smaller, it is here.
I can't start Openbox, using xinit or startx. I have a warning when using xinit:
Code: Select all***** Imlib2 Developer Warning ***** :
This program is calling the Imlib call:
imlib_context_free();
With the parameter:
context
being NULL. Please fix your program.
I don't have dbus, display managers, X is started on tty3 because I reduced the number of ttys. In xinitrc there is
Code: Select allexec openbox-session
I see a cursor appearing for a second, but then the screen goes back to tty.
The problem is new; I'd been using Openbox for a couple of months back then, and it was fine.
System is Unstable.

I recently installed debian 8 stretch with xfce. Since the first time I boot, I have problem starting my X session: from lightdm I always attemped 2 or 3 times before it login (it returned me on lightdm prompt after a short splash screen).
Now it stopped working: the only way I can start xsession is running startx as root. When I try as user it starts the "splash" and return me to the tty with this error message:
Code: Select allServer terminated with error (1). Closing log file(EE)
This is my ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

And this is my /etc/X11//Xsession
Code: Select all#!/bin/sh

# $Id: Xsession 967 2005-12-27 07:20:55Z dnusinow $
[Code] ....
and this the .xsession-errors:
Code: Select allXsession: X session started for lucatastrophe at Tue Mar 29 10:21:09 CEST 2016
localuser:lucatastrophe being added to access control list
openConnection: connect: No such file or directory

dbus-update-activation-environment: setting MAIL=/var/mail/lucatastrophe
[Code] ...
I try to reconfigure Xorg but the Xorg -configure command result in another segmentation fault.
I think that the problem could be related with old configuration (when I install this version of debian I maintain the /home partition and my previous OS was debian 7 with xfce).

Linux noob here with a very fresh Debian 5.04 install. Not sure if this is the correct board for this but here goes;*No* programs start in X. Terminal, System Monitor, Epiphany, Gedit, Synaptic Package Manager... They all fail to start. The programs try to start for 15 seconds after which they give up. For example, if I press the Epiphany-icon in the panel I see "Starting Epiphany We..." in the lower-left corner and the mouse cursor changes to the loading animation for 15 seconds but then after that nothing happens and the "Starting Epiphany We..."-icon disappears. I have two users (plus root of course) and the same thing happens with both accounts.
I can start the icons I have on my desktop (Computer, Home folder, Trash and Downloads) and I can Lock the screen/log off/shut down but that's about it. Oh and one more thing; sometimes when I log in everything works just fine, so this whole thing seems a bit random.

I have recently install Blender on my system (squeeze, 2.6.32-5-amd64, ATI Radeon HD 3100) and when I try and start it I get a segmentation fault. I am using the proprietary driver. When i run glxinfo or glxgears I get a segmentation fault as well which makes me think I have an issue with my hardware acceleration.
I am really suck when it comes to trying to diagnose the problem any further and would appreciate any help you guys have. My system is up to date and Blender has worked before on an almost identical setup (i reinstall debian a while back, may have been using a slightly older kernel then).

I have installed the same ubuntu on another unit (same specs) with no problem on printing.... but this one (I'm swearing a lot now!) because it doesn't work... Been at this for 3 days in a span of one month -- and I started to think that this computer is hard headed GR!!
I'd like to bash it -- sorry but I'm really really annoyed -- to put it softly.
I'd like to know why it's not working as smoothly --
Currently I need to $sudo cupsd to make printing work every time I power on this computer.

I use a P2P application (KMLDonkey), whose client (mlnet) can be either started automatically, at startup, or manually, after login. At installation, when prompted, I chose the former so as to minimise the number of clicks. However, with time I found it inconvenient because, of course, it would start downloading even though I haven't started its GUI yet or don't plan to use it at all.
What I would like is to click on 1 entry in the menu and have the client and, in sequence, the GUI start when I decide to use the application. Perhaps this would require a short script in /usr/local/bin? I've tried to write one, but failed miserably, as I'm not good at it. I use KDE, but the application or the desktop manager themselves are not important here, for the solution would apply to any application with a separate client/GUI.
