Debian :: Upgrade System-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 Failed / Get It To Work?

Sep 8, 2011

I use the automatic upgrades - they hardly ever cause a problem... until now.

I just applied this upgrade (linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64) and a restart was required (normal under when upgrading the image).
After the restart my SIP phone software didn't startup - didn't even get any errors in the log file...
So I checked the "System Monitor" to see if the process was running but not displayed... the System Monitor generates a core dump...

I hope there will be another update to solve this really quickly.... not sure what else is broken. Firefox is still working and so is Skype.

Debian Hardware :: No Sound After Upgrade To System-image-2.6.38-2-amd64 / Get That?

Apr 4, 2011

Two days ago I upgraded kde to 4.6 as provided by the qt-kde.debian.net team, in the process pulling in a few updates from sid (in particular, the 2.6.38 kernel), and after could get no sound out of my laptop. Could someone help work out why?

I was using pulseaudio. This seemed no longer able to find my sound-card (hda-intel, details below). The HDMI output was still listed (but I don't have a TV to use it with). Some error messages from syslog code....

Debian :: How To Upgrade To System-image-2.6.39-bpo.2-amd-64

Aug 12, 2011

I've got 38 kernel from backports installed. Whenever I try to upgrade to kernel 39 from backports I get "initramfs-tools (<0.99~) but 0.98.8 is installed". It suggests to install dracut instead of initramfs-tool. I tried to remove old 38 kernel and initramfs-tools and install all kernel 39 packages and dracut but I cannot boot the pc after it. What's going on and how to upgrade kernel from backports?

Software :: Skype Crashes On Debian / Squeeze AMD64 System - Fix It?

May 18, 2010

Using the howto at http://wiki.debian.org/skype I installed Skype 2.1 beta 2. It launches OK using either skype or linux32 skype and brings up the login screen. It already has my username but when I enter my password skype crashes before logging me in. I get the error:

Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 643: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT' failed!

I know this is a long shot since skype isn't open source, but does anyone have a workaround?

Debian Configuration :: Find & Download I386 Packages On An Amd64 System?

Oct 30, 2010

I have a computer with internet access with amd64 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny). I have another computer with NO internet access with i386 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny).I want to download some packages for the i386 computer using the amd64 computer. So far, the only way I can see to do this is to use dpkg-architecture to temporarily change to i386 on the internet computer, run aptitude with the download-only option to retrieve the packages I need with all suitable dependencies, then switch the internet computer back over to amd64.

I can't imagine I'm the only person who ever needed to do this, and yet I've had no luck finding any advice. The method I described seems rather awkward - is there a more elegant solution?

I apologize to the membership, I realize now the absurdity of this subject. Having now studied the online repository search functions closer, I see it appears packages are automatically retrieved with all necessary dependencies. As such, it is not necessary to use apt and its various functions to do the job.

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Upgrade 9.10 -> 10.04: System Unbootable

May 4, 2010

I've just reported a launchpad bug report about my desktop system being unbootable after upgrade to lucid lynx. [URL]... I opened this thread to ask if someone else experienced a similar problem and for collecting information and workarounds (none yet) about this quite serius problem. The system has an nvidia graphic card and proprietary drivers were installed before the upgrade. However I'm not sure the problem is related to this. FYI, the system booted regularly from a usb stick with ubuntu lucid lynx. SO the problem is in the upgrade path.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Failed, Now System Unuseable?

Oct 11, 2010

I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 a few hours ago using the alternate CD. I selected not to download files off the internet as I wanted to do that at a later stage. After running for close on an hour performing the update, as it reached the end it gave me a message saying the update had failed and the changes will now be restored (or something like that). I clicked ok, and the update window closed. I then restarted the pc and it stopped at the splash screen. Now I cannot get it to load the desktop environment. It Jst sits at the splash screen. Pressing the power button shuts it down normally, but alt-ctrl-f1 does not open a shell. If i start up using recovery mode and then select fail safe graphics mode something comes up about a segmentation fault in xserver in I then end up at the shell where I can work from the command line, but can never get the graphical interface to work.

Here's a screenshot of my partitions:

Debian Installation :: Failed To Upgrade From Lenny To Squeeze

Feb 3, 2010

I have tried several times--unscuccessfully-- to upgrade to the testing branch. I change my apt sources to "squeeze". I get either "err" or "ign" on a lot of the sources when updating. I have seen several methods as to how to upgrade from stable to testing and none have worked so far. I have tried "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade" as well as using aptitude to do the same similar commands. What I find is the following:

* My kernel never gets upgraded at all.

* udev is broken and mice and keyboard do not work.

* Many packages are held back and not upgraded.

I do have a debian 5 image to re-install and try again but I am not finding it to be as easy as many debian people claim. Also, I did a fresh install of squeeze using the net-install image. When the install finished and I rebooted, the computer hung on boot up. It never seemed to read where the kernel was. It would boot up, the system would beep and then reboot never finding the kernel or boot block apparently. how to get squeeze on my box? It is a 1.2 Ghz computer with 512mb ram with the intel i810 southbridge chipset I believe.

Debian :: No Browser Access After Failed Iceweasel Upgrade Attempt

I learned that, even while on Linux, using Iceweasel/Firefox 3.0.6 is not safe. So I tried to update the browser for my PPC G4 iMac (256 MB RAM, 800 MHz processor).

1. I downloaded a backported Iceweasel .deb from URL...

2. I then tried to install it with dpkg -i PathToIceweasel.deb

3. There was an error. I remember seeing xulrunner-1.9.1 is not installed. I tried to install that with apt-get but it was not available.

4. Now when I click on web browser I get the error "Failed to execute default Web Browser: Input/Output error".

5. What can I do without having to reinstall?

Debian Installation :: Failed Wheezy To Jessie Upgrade (cannot Boot)

Aug 13, 2014

I upgraded from deb7 to deb8, but am no longer able to boot. After passing the grub boot menu, the following messages are displayed:

Code:
Select allLoading, please wait...

[   18.066215] Loading kernel module for a network device with CAP_SYS_MODULE (deprecated). Use CAP_NET_ADMIN and alias netdev- instead
_

The screen then clears and an underscore is displayed as the sole character at the top left position of the screen. The system hangs at this point. During installation, I rejected two changed files: /etc/init.d/bootlogd and /etc/libreoffice/sofficerc. For both, I opted to keep the installed version (the default choice of the installer) rather than replacing with the new version. The first might be related to the problem, although it seems to be responsible only for logging the boot process, and I would not expect this to compromise booting.

In case this information is useful, sda1 is mounted at /, sda2 is swap space, sda3 is extended, and sda5 is a logical partition mounted at /home.

I am able to boot into rescue mode, but other than that the system is not usable. Unfortunately, no useful error messages are given to aid in diagnosing the problem.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade Of AMD64 To F11 Tries To Download?

After burning the DVD of F11 for AMD64, I boot from it. After some choices, instead of going to read from the DVD it connects to the internet and tries to download packages. After some time it fails to read and goes into a loop for trying to read. If I interrupt this and skip the network section, it reports it can't connect to the internet. Why does it want to connect to the internet anyway when I've booted from DVD ? It didn't do that on x86.

Debian :: How Well Does Upgrade Work

Aug 10, 2011

I'm evaluating Debian for use as my main system (on my laptop). Currently I'm using arch linux, and am pretty satified except the need for too much manual configuration. What I'm looking for a system, which is similar to arch in that, but is more automated when it comes to configurations:

- can be build from a minimal base, with only the software that is needed, sort of "tailored" to my own needs; the system will therefore be relatively lightweight, with no unnecessary things consuming resources)

- does not require fiddling to much in configurations (I agree that some degree is necessary, due to the tailoring)

- handles well upgrades (this is where arch looks really promising, due to the rolling release, even with the disadvantage of loosing some of the stability)

One of the things I did not like about arch was the feeling to have a system which is built from several pieces that don't quite fit together. I guess that it is a consequence of the fact that some things are not configured right, or configured at all.
