View 2 RepliesWith /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play set to --id='desktop-login' in the startup Applications dialog one expects a sound to play at login. This is not the case with fedora 12. I set the variable to --file=/home/me/sounds/myloginsound and I got sound.
I'm curious as to why the event id failed. I suspect that id was not linked/associated with any sound before fedora 12 was released. How does one troubleshoot sound event ids and their associated sounds in f12.
I'd like to get audio when I log out as well. I recall seeing a dialog box with events and associated sounds in f11 (or was it f10?) .... I don't see it in f12
1. Does anyone know which package adds that functionality?
2. In the absence of a GUI approach, how can this be achieved (with the terminal)?
when I am booting my system it me Open sound system failed no kernel modules detected. I already have installed all of the packages which are on this page/ALSA Does anyone know where is the problem?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI haven't updated my centos box for almost about a year, my theory is if it ain't broke don't fix it.These last two weeks I've been replacing hardware, a motherboard, memory, processor, and a hard-disk. Everything worked fine with the current 2.6.18-128.1.10, but I decided that I should upgrade to the latest along with all the new packages. But in doing so I would need to recompile the driver module for the raid controllers, rr1740. So I recompiled them using the 2.6.18-164.1 build while I was in kernel 128. When I was done, I restarted the machine and when it booted to the new 164 kernel, it came back very long error messages but here's what I can remember off the top of my head.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm getting these messages Over SSH with the -D switch

At uni I did this for a couple of reasons, primarily to connect to trackers for bittorrent. I would get these messages fairly often but I never thought much of it because I figured I was just loosing packets over the network or something (understandable in my situation). At home I decided to continue to use this method because that computer is set up in DMZ and is very useful. I havn't received many of these messages but recently all my torrents stalled and I had a whole bunch of these messages. Is it possible my computer just cant handle all the network connections (it's a 2ghz AMD running debian)? What exactly do these messages mean? Is there any way to optimize my connection in any way?
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I've been running Ubuntu or a variant for about a year now and suddenly every now and then one or two of my documents (open office or pdfs) have no information and they won't open.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to check for updates and also when I try and press "reload" in the Synaptic package manager, I get this error:
Failed to fetch [URL]
Failed to fetch [URL] Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Sometimes, I also get this red triangle with an exclamation point in my toolbar thing that tells me I have repository problems, or something along those lines. I'm assuming they're all related. I've been looking around, and I noticed people having similar errors and just being able to uncheck something in my Software settings, or something like that. In my case, I'm not exactly sure what to uncheck though, don't wanna screw anything up any more! I'm using 10.10, and I believe I'm using Maverick. I'm not sure what that means though. I've only recently started using Linux.
Whenever i go to the update manager and check for updates i get this
Failed to download repository information
Check your Internet connection. i am connected to the Internet and the connection is obviously fine because i am posting this, same thing happens when i go through terminal to i am currently running ubuntu 11.04
Since upgrading to 10.10 , there has been problems with the update manager.
Iv looked around but cannot find a good conclusion. code...
Ok for some reason my INTERNET is set to etho2 instead of etho, might this be the prob? , YES I do have INTERNET/connection.

Im fairly sure these are default sources that come with Maverick and would very much like to have these packages.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhenever I go to update I press check and I get "Failed to download repository information Check your Internet connection." Well obviously I don't need to check my internet connection if I'm posting this thread. I am using Google Chrome and it's as fast as can be. When I run
Code:
sudo apt-get update
I get the following:
Code:
Get:1 http://dl.google.com stable Release.gpg [197B]
Hit http://extras.ubuntu.com maverick Release.gpg
Ign http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main Translation-en
[code].....
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
after uninstalling Namoroka i have the following issue with the updates
my update manager only downloads stable releases and only includes firefox stable updates

For a few weeks I've been ignoring an error about updates from my sources (error below)

Is there a way to change this or did someone just make a subfolder and not propagate the change properly?
I am beginner in Ubuntu. I am unable to install any software. For example, whenever I try to use Ubuntu software center to install VLC media player, it shows following notice:
Failed to download repository information
Check your internet connection
I searched on google about installing software on Ubuntu and tried to use the command I found for installing VLC media player on terminal.
First I typed command sudo apt-get update
And I get this on my terminal ----- Ign [URL] lucid Release.gpg .....
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Then I typed the following command to install VLC :
sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc
Then I get the following information on terminal:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package vlc
I've seen this pop up a few times on the forum but my setup is slightly different. I have a PC with an ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium motherboard. I've just installed CentOS 5.1. Yes, I know this is ancient, but this is what they're developing on at work. I'm trying to get connected either via ethernet or wireless and neither one works. When I boot the computer to Window XP it does connect on ethernet. Ethernet should be easy so I'm concentrating on that. But I get "Determining IP information for eth0... failed." after a 'service network start'.Here is some other information that was asked on similar threads:
> uname -rmi
2.6.18-53.el5 x86_64 x86_64
> grep eth0 /etc/modprobe.conf
[code]....
All of a sudden I am getting this error message saying "Failed to download repository information." With this error message code...

When I do this:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
in terminal it also gives me this code...
It's up in the top "toolbar" of Natty and it has a red exclamation mark inside. It tells me my "update information is outdated" and so, naturally, I clicked it. It opens my "Update Manager" which tells me "there are no updates to install" and "The package information was last updated 11 days ago."
So I click the "check" button and the following pops up in a window:
Failed to download repository information
Check your Internet connection.
Code:
W:Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
My internet connection, contrary to the information provided, is fantastic (I've also tried 2 different locations).
I upgraded my ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 after its release. It was working fine. But today I saw its giving an error while upgrading. I am not very much efficient in ubuntu so cant understand why this error is. It is giving as failed to download repository information. check your internet connection. But my internet is working fine.

I have to setup a WiFi network for a hotel. There are several possibilities, but for me the best one is to setup a open Wifi network with web authentication for single user. What is the best solution in terms of compatibility, security, reliability, etc? I don't know many solution for web authentication, only the RADIUS project.
