I recently upgraded my squeeze in my job's PC. It went fine, but after a reboot if I press ctrl+alt+fX nothing happens. Keyboard works fine, I tested it in Openoffice.
View 2 Repliesnot sure exactly when this broke, but for some reason I'm not able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 anymore to fall back to the first virtual console.I can kill X with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE just fine, but I'd like to be able to get a normal shell to kill things when I've messed too much with graphical stuff.

1) I can no longer switch to a text terminal with ctrl+alt+F# - it worked with vesa driver. There is no option "VTswitch" in xorg.conf
2) The new fglrx does not give 3D, also very bad performance - dragging windows on screen makes them stutter for instance.
gnome-terminal from the Debian squeeze does not use the 'default_size_columns' and 'default_size_rows' from the /apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/ folder of gconf.

I want to say that I've been searching for the answer for a week and couldn't find anything but problems similar to mine which were unresolved.I used to have debian lenny, but one day i decided to reinstall my operating system and upgraded to sid, so I have a fresh install of debian sid with gnome.
The system beep no longer works on gnome.
What I mean, when i move to terminal(like ctrl+alt+f1) it works great, it also works when i type 'beep' in gnome-terminal. but it doesnt make a sound when i e.g. press ctrl+G, when i am being called on irssi, when i press backspace in gnome-terminal. These things used to work in Lenny, and I really need them (especially this hiliting in irssi). I would go back to Lenny if i didnt need some software that is not present for that version of debian. The pcspkr module is loaded
I have a broken touchpad primary click button so I set up the touchpad for left-handed people but when I use my wacom digital tablet, I have to switch and it's very annoying because I tend to still use the touchpad when the tablet is connected. A terminal command would help me a lot since I could alias it and I have a shortcut on my keyboard for the gnome-terminal.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

The problem is that I cannot switch between users.I have copied a script from another site, but it will only open a new lightdm in a new display (tty8) while the other user's session is still active (tty7).

If I click New Login, it will open a new lightdm session in a new display.I have searched in Google and these forums for some time already and I could not find any solution.I have just installed Debian 8.1 and XFCE in this computer, migrating from Debian 7.8 and Gnome. What I want is the same effect (or similar) to what gdm/gnome does.I have also found a solution that's about installing xfswitch-plugin, but it will also install gdm3 and lots of gnome dependencies.
I know this is usually with the intent of multiseat systems. I am not interested in setting up a multiseat system. What I am interested in configuring on using the console and jumping back to X session, not the other way around. Is this possible if your default desktop environment GNOME and configure GDM to do this with the novtswitch parameter mentioned here? [URL]..
I tried even playing around with Xorg, finding out from the man page Xorg server-1.4.2 it does not even have novtswitch functionality compiled X does, but I am not sure I am configured it properly, specifically because I am not doing multiseat. Does anyone have background on this to give me some guidance? I have attached the relevant conf files and logs. Let me know if more is needed. In my test environment, it switches VT anyway and the keyboard does not work. I assume my Xorg binary is not compat for this, but am I even on the right track? I did not expect the kb to go out like it did.

Why do you have to press ctrl-L to use the location text box in Nautilus? There used to be a setting in preferences where you could have it always use the text bar. Now you have to use some gconf command in the terminal. The gconf command I've used also will only work for normal users. If I want to open a root nautilus terminal to move files around between my mounted drives then I have to hit ctrl-l every time. It is really annoying because if I am in a Nautilus window there are lots of times where I need to copy the path to something I am doing in the terminal.
Why does it seem like everything involved with Ubuntu is simplifying things at the expense of having options? I thought GNU/Linux was all about options. I guess it still is, but I just cannot understand why you would completely remove options instead of just putting them in an advanced section or something.
What is the general way to switch the keyboard layout?
What works for me currently is the custom Section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/kbd.conf.
However this section must include Option "Device" "/dev/input/by-path/..." which identifies the current keyboard. This works fine for my laptop keyboard.
However when I attach USB keyboard, keyboard switching does not work.
I also found somewhere it should be done via /etc/default/keyboard, but that does not work for me at all.
I have HP Compaq 6530b laptop running Debian Wheezy AMD64. I have a docking station with a monitor supporting 1680x1050 resolution and the laptop monitor with 1440x900. The video is integrated Intel mobile series 4.Both monitors are identified and working OK. When I use the laptop monitor standalone it runs at the native resolution. When connected to the docking station I can choose dual monitors with both using their native resolutions and the desktop spread on both of them (with the laptop monitor being primary and containing the taskbar and icons). If I choose to mirror the display it sets itself to a lower resolution of 1280x1024 that is supported by both monitors.
The problem is that I want to use one monitor at a time. If I close the lid of the laptop it turns off both monitors instead of using the docking station. When the lid is closed I want the bigger docking station monitor to be primary and working at native resolution and if I open the laptop or remove the laptop from the docking station to use the laptop monitor at it's native resolution.I had Debian Lenny I386 before and it was operating as expected but I made a clean install of Wheezy amd64 and I don't know how to configure it.I don't have xorg.conf file so I don't know where it takes the settings from.
I'm using Mate on Jessie. The problem is that mate-volume-control kinda sucks as an audio control. It doesn't have nearly enough options for a proper volume control program. Pulse is much better for my needs. It or Alsa. Is it possible to remove mate-volume-control, or at least make Pulse the default volume control?

I have made it look fairly nice with the .bashrc but the text size is way too large. Is there anyone here that knows how to change it?Also I was wondering whether a png could be used as a tty background. Though I am possibly pushing the limitations of tty with that one lol.

I've Squeeze with a minimal XFCE 4 installed and looking for a simple text editor running under XFCE.

Ever since that gnome-terminal doesn't recognize the shortcuts keys like <ctrl>r or <ctrl>c and I get my other language charecters instead. thats happen with any keyboard layout I swith to. Furthermore, <alt><ctrl>+F1...F9 doesn't work either.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed a fresh install of Debian Wheezy to an old Pentium 4 desktop computer I found on Craigslist. Everything is mostly up and running but I've been encountering an odd issue with Firefox. Whenever I type text into either a search or text dialog on Youtube, Facebook or on Duck Duck Go the text is invisible. I can highlight the text to see what I have written, but obviously this is quite annoying not to be able to view what I am typing in these places in real-time. The strange thing is that it is only these sites that I have found, everywhere else (reddit, google, Debian forums as well) can see what I am typing. I'm using Firefox 35.0 right now.

On Wheezy I was using Scribus also, but without such problems. Unfortunately I often need to use the text editing in the layout mode in order to adjust the text flow for the final layout.
Dolphin showing .iso file as text wants to open in Kate or Kwrite. I reported this bug to Debian so they can get it fixed [URL]...
If you haven't done this fix, download the three iso files to see this problem in Debian 8 32bit: dban-2.3.0_i586.iso shows as normal in Dolphin. [URL]....

I can't find a solution for not seeing any texts on html5 web pages. I haven't found any other report about such an odd behaviour on the web so far. Even on the new W3C web page (see the screenshot below for details) I can't see any texts. They are just invisible. I can mark and copy them, but there is nothing to see on Iceweasel 3.0.6 and Epiphany 2.22.3.
Because both browsers behave the same way I guess it's not a browser issue, but something more basic. My Debian Lenny stable should be unblemished because I've never used anything else than the main sources. I can't believe, that the W3C has switched to a new standard without propper fallback-support for older browser versions...
I would like to set the default text editor in Xfce to gedit. The only solution that I found on Google was to right click on a given text file, select 'open with other application', sleect gedit, and make sure that the "use as default kind" button is checked. Unfortunately this only works for text files with the same extension as the original file. Is there a way of setting every text file to open with gedit by default that doesn't involve repeating this exercise for every possible text file extension (.c, .py, .h, .hs, etc.)?

Goal: Create a screencast demo on linux, play it back on a windows machine.
I am running this command to record the screen, installed libav:
avconv -f x11grab -r 25 -s 1600x900 -i :0.0 -vcodec libx264 -threads 4 /home/sysadmin/Desktop/output.avi
The issue I am running into is, when I try to play this file in Windows Media Player or even VLC on the linux host, the default size of the video results in the text in the terminal to be unreadable..
When I re-size the video, as in blow it up to full screen, I can see the text clearly..
The playback device is running something like 1280x1020 resolution. Is there a way to make it so that the text will also be readable?
Any way to remove the background color from the icon text? The little color bubble that holds the icon text? Yes I know I am picky...

I just installed 10.04 on a computer I put together, I noticed the button that allows you to switch back and forth to the 'text entry mode' on the nautilus location bar is missing. Is there a way to get this back? I found you can use CTRL+L or use gconf-editor to switch but I used that button quite a bit and want to find a way to get it back.

EDIT: Oh, great. I think a fire just broke out. I can hear the sirens, but I can't stop them! Crap!
EDIT2: You know, listening to these sirens really sucks. I had my city up to 130,000 people. I was just saving up enough money to buy an arcology when I tried to move SimCity to Desktop #2. Wine was not happy with this decision. My city is probably burned to the ground by now.
EDIT3: Ok, I just realised that I can stop the process from the System Monitor. Too little, too late I imagine. Oh well, I can probably rebuild it if I could just get to the window...
I just installed CenOS 5 on my server and am in the process of installing some software to the machine.
I understand repositories and was able to get it all set up for installation with the yum command.
My problem is that when I attempt the install, it says i need root access to install.
I tried using sudo commands to switch to root access, but after entering the password, it says my username isn't allowed root and that my actions will be reported.
I am the admin for the system and have total control, I just don't know how to switch to root in the terminal.
