View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to introduce my friends to this wonderful OS . I am looking for a Fedora derivative that can be run on a Pentium iii with 256 mb of ram .
After a respective amount of Google-ing, I did not manage to come up with an answer to this. This has been a problem for several people because Ubuntu or any other distribution that I know of does not support the Linksys AE1000 card. It's kinda a pain because my desktop needs wireless in order to connect to the internet (for several reasons...) Is anybody working on the drivers for this? I would prefer not to be stuck with Windows. I would love to run a light weight distro on it instead.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I wanted to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my ASUS 900a that only has 4GB of disk space. Of course Ubuntu 11.04 requires 4.4GB, so I started looking for alternatives.I tried to get Lubuntu 11.04, but when I ran the installation process it states that 5GB are required. Not very light weight IMHO if this is the case.I was hoping that someone had an idea of how to install a strippted version of Ubuntu 11.04 (maybe without some of the apps like the LibreOffice Suite) or knew why Lubuntu was asking for so much hard drive space.I'm hoping to move away from my light-weight version of WinXP.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying Connochaet OS (ex Deli Linux - for low resource machines) and it's coming with xxxterm as the web browser.Well, this browser works well and is lightweight. I would recommend it right away for people with very low RAM in their PCs.Ok, I didn't try Flash but I don't care about this. It's a webkit browser, like uzbl. This latter one I never tried.

I enjoy using vim from lxterminal with the black background, as well as awesome with its dark theme. I configured xfe manually to be darkish, and i use darklooks as a GTK theme to suit it as well. I could say all my desktop looks pretty dark, which my eyes thank me for. I also use redshift. But problems come along when surfing the web. Most web pages (including this one) have very bright styles. They are not the problem themselves, but switching from my windows hurts my eyes since it's a quick change to a much brighter screen. What would you do, either:
1. Use everything with a brighter background and putting the screen brightness a bit lower. (changing the GTK theme to clearlooks, using lxterminal with a white background, etc.)
2. Use some color theme with uzbl so that pages would look much darker. (like when you set manually the text and background colors in Firefox/Iceweasel)
I would myself go with the second one if most pages wouldn't look that bad when modified that way. For example, many pages use non-transparent images with white backgrounds on white pages, so if you change the background to black not only it looks horrible but it too is a mess.
There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..
My speakers are making continuous slight buzz sounds. I don't know why this is happening but when i am making my sound to mute all, the sound goes off. When I hear properly, it seems to be the sound of the hard-drive spinning sound, I couldn't under from where it is coming, its happening from past 4-5 days.

When skype loads up, i go to the options>video>test. The green light comes on by the built in webcam, then i get a segmentation fault and skype crashes: /usr/local/bin/skype: line 2:4055 Segmentation fault LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype
Then I tried:LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so then running skype and i got the segmentation fault again.I may have missed some threads on this but everyone else seemed to be thanking someone for fixing their problem by now. Finally I tried threating my computer with a Windows installation. But I think both me and the computer knew it was a hollow threat,
There's this low monotone electronic buzz coming out of my speakers. But only if the greater part of my screen is using lighter colors! Meaning, if for instance I have the terminal (black) full-screen there is no buzz. If I have it sized over the half of my screen there's a medium buzz. And if I am on the Google Search home page with the browser full screen (most of the screen white) there's a loud buzz. :SAnd it's only if I run the sound through my amplifier. It's not audible if I just use the laptopspeakers. Really, I have no idea even in what direction to start looking.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently got an upgrade from my mobile broadband provider (3 UK) that included a ZTE MF112 modem. I found that (unlike the Hauwei modem that preceeded it) this item did not work "out of the box". After a bit of googling around I decided that a good starting place would be to upgrade the OS on my laptop. I've been meaning to do this for a while anyway so have just installed Squeeze (the i386 version, on Thinkpad x61). I think it's now pretty close to working "out of the box" but annoyingly isn't quite there. I thought of getting a ZTE modem to work say that usb-modeswitch needs to be used to make it not load as a cdrom. However, it appears to load correctly without any alteration (in fact, adding the /etc/udev/rules.d/zte_eject.rules file I have found described appear to do the reverse and make it load as a storage device - at least an icon for it appears on screen).
lsusb correctly lists it as device 19d2:0031 and identifies the device as a ZTE MF636 (though it says MF112 on the package). Looking at the Network Connections tool there is an entry for 3 mobile that is, afaik, correctly configured. If I click on the network applet on the toolbar, there is a bit of contradiction: towards the top of the drop-down list it reports mobile broadband as not enabled, but further down under the "available" list is an entry for "3 internet". I haven't paid too much attention to the not enabled entry because it also reports the wired network as not managed, so maybe this is just a quirk of network manager. - I know you have to comment out eth0 entries in /etc/network/interfaces to have network manager deal with the interface in Squeeze. There are no entries for the mobile connection in the interfaces file.
If I click on the 3 internet entry the applet goes momentarily into trying to connect mode (the circling dot) but very quickly pops up a Disconnected box, and that's all that ever happens. I note that the light on the modem stays permanently red. On the old Huwei it started green but went blue, and I think I read something about it also changing colour on the ZTE. On the other hand, the Hauwei didn't show up on the network manager list until the light had turned blue, whereas this does seem to be there. It looks as if the problem is something fairly trivial since the device appears to be both recognised and (almost!) correctly configured. How to sort this.
I have this strange problem with screensaver (in fact i dont know if it is the problem, but it seems to be), i describe the problem next:I have a computer with debian squeeze installed. I use this computer only as a dumb terminal for showing information about companies, this means that it have no mouse nor keyboard connected to it. I configure autologin for a not-provileged user and autorun one app.
I disabled the screen saver for obvious reasons. This all works very fine. The problem is that when connect to the computer with ssh and reboot it, 10 minutes after started the monitor goes dark, as if the screensaver gets activated, then i connect a mouse and do some moves the screen goes to the normal functional state, then disconnect the mouse and it never goes dark again, after 1 day even!. When i turn on the computer with mouse and keyboard connected, just 20 seconds after started i disconnect those both, it do the same (after 10 minutes goes dark), but if wait for 1 minute usgin the mouse and keyboard and then disconnect both, the screen goes dark thing never came out. It just appear to happen at some point when the system does not detect any input.
I have a rocketfish RF-NBCAM webccam but it doesnt seem to work as it should be, the image is dark and the blue light infront of it that helps with low light enviroments is not working. i have found some drivers for other ubuntu distros but i have the dependencies trouble.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo im not sure exactly what caused this but when playing movies through the xine-ui has stopped keeping my system active causing my monitor to turn off. This started happening about a week ago and I cant remember installing any xine related updates, but was wondering if anyone knows how to make xine keep the system active to prevent this. I could have sworn there was an option for this but I cant seem to find it anymore.

Is a minimal install of Ubuntu as light as any other linux distro?
All of a sudden the screensaver starts when I play movies in kaffeine. I noticed this yesterday. It didn't do that before. I don't know what I've done to make this happen. I'm using Kaffeine v. 1.0-svn3 on a 64 bit OpenSUSE 11.3. My screensaver is kometen4 from kde-look.org.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI found a few threads dealing with this subject about a year ago but none seem to have come up with a simple answer. I use vlc and one writer indicated there was an option in vlc to disable the screensaver when in full screen mode. However, I've checked all over vlc and can't find this option.I'm not interested in creating a switch using Terminal to do this manually. I just want to know if disabling the screensaver can be automatic when in full screen mode - like in Windows
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have my secreensaver just set to black screen after 10min but I had to disable it because the black screen starts up while watching recorded TV & videos on VLC. I don't usually install "gnome" or gnome-desktop-base or whatever it is. I always install "gnome-core" only. Squeeze has the screensaver installed with the gnome-core package by default so I can't leave it out like I usually do as this screensaver issue has been a problem for me since Sarge. So, now that I have to deal with this,

View 3 Replies View RelatedI use the Futura font as my application/desktop/titlebars font, and I think it looks beautiful. However, its bold version is much too dark for my liking and it really spoils the look of my desktop when it's used in applications (Nautilus' sidebar and Libre Office's menubar are the main offenders), and what I would much rather is if the system would use Futura's heavy weight option instead of bold, but after searching gconf and for configuration files I can't work out where or how I would do this.

I never resized my ubuntu partition, since it had like 80 GB. of free space.Yesterday, I re-compiled my kernel, mainly to enable FrameBuffer in the console. So i decided it was time to resize my partition, to use the whole HDD.Turns out, that i had a little bit of problems compiling my kernel, and yes it took really a lot more than i thought ( I had to compile it twice ) but finally i got it working.
i still got some 100 GB. free, so is there anyway to get my system to it's normal weight?.I really don't wanna miss all my info, specially my programs, and customized desktop, it really took me a wile to set compiz just the way i like it.IM REALLY SORRY, I KNOW IT WAS MY FAULT, BUT I REALLY DON'T WANNA LOSE ALL THAT GB.
