Debian Configuration :: Screensaver Starting During Mythtv?

I have my secreensaver just set to black screen after 10min but I had to disable it because the black screen starts up while watching recorded TV & videos on VLC. I don't usually install "gnome" or gnome-desktop-base or whatever it is. I always install "gnome-core" only. Squeeze has the screensaver installed with the gnome-core package by default so I can't leave it out like I usually do as this screensaver issue has been a problem for me since Sarge. I have a PowerPC installation (fully patched) of Ubuntu 10, and I pulled down the MythTV suite on top (since there is no Mythbuntu/PPC that I found). I'm having an issue where after I scan for channels with my tuner using mythtv-setup, I can't set the starting channel number. Its almost as if nothing ever populates into the drop down. This seems to be specific to the combination that I have - Ubuntu 10 + PPC + Myth 0.23. If I use another x86 + Myth .21 and the same Tuner (HDHomeRun), I can set the starting channel fine. A Mac OS 10.4 + Myth .21 also allowed me to set the channel. I've rebuilt this install twice now and it won't allow me to set it. I can see the scanned data in the mythconverg database, so I know its there.

I use Sysv-rc-conf to turn on/off services. I initially turned off cups (I'm pretty sure it was on by default) using this method, but now I have turned it back on again, it won't start at boot. I have to start it manually each session. I've probably missed something but here goes anyway,

I'm having trouble working with Xen on debian, I have many centos servers running Xen and have no problems. Everytime I start or stop a XEN vm it kills networking on the host OS for about 30 seconds. It doesn't respond to pings or anything, then it returns and everything works. I have asked about this issue in #xen on freenode.

I have mounted an NFS share with ISO images on my kvm Server. If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied
The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .

Is anybody running MythTV on Sid, or squeeze or lenny for that matter? I ask because I am trying to set MythTV up on a fresh debian install. I had (and can put back) KnoppMyth, but it's getting a bit long in the tooth (I've got R5F27, from 2007). That said I know that my hardware works, I'm just having trouble getting said hardware to work on this fresh install.
I've tryed following this Howto: Installing MythTV on Debian Etch - MythTV which did not work for a lenny install. I wound up with an PnUP error I coudl not sort out. I then installed sid, and followed this Howto: Installing MythTV SVN on Debian Sid - MythTV which failed too. I was unable to get past installing the ivtv drivers, as per this Howto: Howto:Debian - IVTV, the building and installing the modules part. Some errorin the source files I could not sort out. I then I tryed a combination of the two, which is where I'm at right now.
I did a fresh netinstall, upgraded to sid. Installed mysql, nVIDIA drivers and ivtv drivers & firmware from the sid repos. Next I installed MythTV from the debian-multimedia sid repos. Configured the mythbackend, filled the database, and configured the mythfrontend. alas, I can not get any TV out put. I'm pretty sure it's my Hauppauge PVR-150 TV Tuner card that is the issue, but I'm at wits end in trying to sort it out.

I just did a clean install of Lenny after running Etch for ages. Mythtv used to just work out of the box but now I'm getting the dreaded 'cannot connect to database error' & if I try to run the fronted or mythtv-setup the screen is unreadable.Why does this distro (which I used to love) seem to get worse with every release?

The upgrade actually went pretty well, except for what looks like a new "feature" to mysql-server-5.1. But I post here, because the issue seemed to be in "/etc/hosts" file. If it should really be somewhere else, feel free to move it. The problem is that I don't understand what this means. What potential problems do I have without a "127.0.1.1"? Or could this have been effected by some change to the "users" table in mysql? This mythtv server "musem" is my main machine, and is being remotely accessed by the Linux box next to my TV.

There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..

I have this strange problem with screensaver (in fact i dont know if it is the problem, but it seems to be), i describe the problem next:I have a computer with debian squeeze installed. I use this computer only as a dumb terminal for showing information about companies, this means that it have no mouse nor keyboard connected to it. I configure autologin for a not-provileged user and autorun one app.
I disabled the screen saver for obvious reasons. This all works very fine. The problem is that when connect to the computer with ssh and reboot it, 10 minutes after started the monitor goes dark, as if the screensaver gets activated, then i connect a mouse and do some moves the screen goes to the normal functional state, then disconnect the mouse and it never goes dark again, after 1 day even!. When i turn on the computer with mouse and keyboard connected, just 20 seconds after started i disconnect those both, it do the same (after 10 minutes goes dark), but if wait for 1 minute usgin the mouse and keyboard and then disconnect both, the screen goes dark thing never came out. It just appear to happen at some point when the system does not detect any input.

I installed debian 6.0 (64 bit) systems, but in the "System - Preferences - Screen Saver " set idle time, and then select "activate creensaver when idle"and"Lock screen when screensaver activated, "but to No response after a set time. But by "ctrl + alt + l" was able to quickly enter the screen saver and lock the screen. May I ask how should I set the idle time after the screen saver and lock into?

Just did a new install of squeeze using the DI beta 2 and installed the nvidia driver the debian way, then the rss-glx screensavers
when i set a screensaver i can preview it and it runs fine, but when it times out the screen just goes blank.
how do i get the glx screensavers to show?

As the title says the option in the SCREENSAVER(Power Management Preferences)Put display to sleep when inactive for is not working. I have selected 2 minutes, and even after 1 hour it will not shutdown the display.

I am having no luck configuring ProFTPd on a Debian Lenny production server we use to host our MySQL databases and a few websites. I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".
It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.

So I correctly see the two luns, but multipath doesn't create the relative devices. Under /dev/mapper I see: control mpath0 mpath0-part1 mpath0-part1 is the first lun, the one I mounted in a directory under filesystem. I can't find the device for the second lun

I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.
My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

I have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)

I am using Squessze and Gnome. When I try to use the gui System>Administration>Network or Users and Groups I get the error The configuration could not be loaded. You are not allowed to access the system configuration.Everything was working before. I read around a bit. In some cases,it was caused by mismatching group and password files after using the gui. I do not know how to check if they are matching. Of course I do not know for sure that is the problem in my case.

I just installed debian 8.0.0..I installed it without "desktop-environment" during tasksel, but instead installed it with "sudo apt-get install xorg gnome-core" atferwards.I want x-win to be present but I do not want it to start during boot.
Adding "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=text" to the grub config used to work but for this new debian it does not change anything. Yes, I did do update-grub2 after editing the grub file, and I also confirmed in /var/log/messages that "text" is present with the kernel command. "sudo update-rc.d gdm3 remove" also has no effect,what I do gnome starts at boot time.
