Ubuntu Networking :: Run A Light Weight Distro On It Instead?
Apr 13, 2011After a respective amount of Google-ing, I did not manage to come up with an answer to this. This has been a problem for several people because Ubuntu or any other distribution that I know of does not support the Linksys AE1000 card. It's kinda a pain because my desktop needs wireless in order to connect to the internet (for several reasons...) Is anybody working on the drivers for this? I would prefer not to be stuck with Windows. I would love to run a light weight distro on it instead.

Jun 21, 2011So I wanted to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my ASUS 900a that only has 4GB of disk space. Of course Ubuntu 11.04 requires 4.4GB, so I started looking for alternatives.I tried to get Lubuntu 11.04, but when I ran the installation process it states that 5GB are required. Not very light weight IMHO if this is the case.I was hoping that someone had an idea of how to install a strippted version of Ubuntu 11.04 (maybe without some of the apps like the LibreOffice Suite) or knew why Lubuntu was asking for so much hard drive space.I'm hoping to move away from my light-weight version of WinXP.

Dec 25, 2010I recently "saw the light" and realized that ubuntu was becoming a buggy overly-social joke of a distro, and i found that fedora seemed to fix most of my issues with making my laptop run well.Samba was not one of them.Anyway, I installed samba, check. (I also installed the graphical utility). I checked off samba and the client in the firewall. check. I used the utility (system-config-samba?) to switch the workgroup over. check.it did not want to access my fileserver at first; it saw it but as soon as i tried to mount and open it, it timedout and gave me the "unable to mount location" "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. the next day it worked perfectly. now it is back to not working. it also is not working on my main rig (but it has a faulty hard disk so it will be out for a while).

Dec 15, 2010Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
General :: Which DEB Based Distro To Use?
May 4, 2010Ive been looking for a Debian based distro that is as close to Debian as can be with all the codecs and stuff already in it, also wireless. I would go with Debian, but TBH, I am not wanting to toy around with setting it up. Yes, there is Ubuntu which I have used for a while now, but I am wanting something closer to the source, as it were. Also, from what I understand, Ubuntu also changes things and they arent straight DEB anymore. Am I crazy? Is there anything like this? Or am I stuck with either Debian or Ubuntu?

Nov 28, 2010I have been using Linux for quite a while and have gotten pretty good at it, but recently I started using Backtrack in a VM and realized I have no idea what it is based on. Then I got to thinking I have no idea what that even means. For example, OSX is based on Darwin right, but what does that mean? Ubuntu is another that is based on Debian, but I don't know what that means.
The reason I'm asking is because in order to get my screen resolution and networking right in Backtrack I need to know what it is based on so I can download the proper packages to install the VirtualBox guest additions, and I have no idea. Is there a way to get this information from the operating system? Maybe uname -a is giving me the info and I just don't know where to look in the output?

May 10, 2010All my friends say, OpenSuse is the best distro. I have tried it, but I just can't make it work for me. I have a lot of problems touchpad not working properly, wireless, it crashes. It looks good, but I need a distro which will work on my dell Vostro 1700. I have found Ubuntu (gnome) best for my laptop, but I would like to try (KDE) something more polished like OpenSuse. A distro which works like a charm.

Mar 11, 2011I bought a new NVidia Asus EN210 for my HTPC, but I can't get Ubuntu to install.
First I made a live USB disk of 10.10 with Unetbootin and when I choose the option of "try Ubuntu" it starts loading and then just hangs, still showing the menu of boot options. After this I tried Xubuntu on a USB disk. This one also starts loading but then just fails. I also tried XBMC Live. This one does show the Ubuntu 10.04 screen but then just shows a black screen.
After this I found a CD with Ubuntu 10.04, I think or it is 10.10, laying around in my room. I booted it and once I select an option from the install menu it starts to load, but then just gives a black screen with a flashing "-" sign.
The strange thing is, once I pop in the old video card, which is an ATI HD4350, my Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD on USB disk does work and it does get past the menu of boot options (in my second paragraph I describe how this isn't the case with Ubuntu 10.10 combined with my NVidia card).

What I'm looking for:
- Debian Based
- KDE 4.X
- Ideally it would still be able to use debian archives (ie like sidux)
- Updates less often than sid, so you aren't a long way behind if you miss a week, but often enough to still have up to date versions of software.

May 27, 2010I need to reinstall my distro, MEPIS, but--mostly just because I feel restless--I'd like to try another Debian-based distro. It has to be Debian-based because I'm comfortable enough with apt-get that I don't want to learn another package management system; and I want to avoid Ubuntu and distros based on it, because I've long since decided I don't like the decreased user control in Ubuntu. What are my choices? If I want to leave MEPIS and don't want Ubuntu, I don't really know what there is other than Debian itself. I don't know if I feel like tolerating the supposedly greater difficulty of Debian, but I would otherwise expect to feel at home in it, since MEPIS is based on it. And does the Debian Project still make a version small enough to fit on one CD?

Fedora :: Scanner Light Goes Off After Each Scan
Apr 15, 2011I'm using a scanner with Fedora. However, linux does something that is undesirable; It turns off the scanner light, everytime it does a scan, which the HP software, which comes for windows, doesn't do. The result? The light never warms up enough and all the images come with a blue tone on them. Only after using the scanner a few times, the light warms up enough and the images start getting their true colour.The question is, can I somehow force the light to stay on, even during scans, like it happens when I am using Windows? Or not? Anyone has ideas?

Fedora Networking :: Flashing Wireless LED Light On Laptop
Mar 12, 2009I just installed Fedora 10 on my laptop (HP dv2500 series). I have it dual booting between Fedora and Vista. The laptop has one of those wireless on/off switches and next it the LED: blue - wireless active, amber - wireless inactive. It works fine in Vista but whenever I'm using Fedora it flashes between blue and amber quite fast, stopping on blue for maybe 4 seconds, then flashes again. I am on a constant connection to the network though, no sign of connection loss.
