View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter a respective amount of Google-ing, I did not manage to come up with an answer to this. This has been a problem for several people because Ubuntu or any other distribution that I know of does not support the Linksys AE1000 card. It's kinda a pain because my desktop needs wireless in order to connect to the internet (for several reasons...) Is anybody working on the drivers for this? I would prefer not to be stuck with Windows. I would love to run a light weight distro on it instead.
View 2 Replies View Relatedhave an old system with 256mb memory running 10.10. I use this mostly to run as a host for tomcat6 and glassfishv3 and cherokee accessible from other systems on my home net. dont really need much of a desktop 4 it but am reluctant to handle ubuntu server edition until i know ubuntu better. do you think xubuntu will use up less juice than standard ubuntu ? can i retrograde my 10.10 ubuntu version to xubuntu, or will this need a full fresh install ? is there a separate forum thread 4 xubuntu ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI use the Futura font as my application/desktop/titlebars font, and I think it looks beautiful. However, its bold version is much too dark for my liking and it really spoils the look of my desktop when it's used in applications (Nautilus' sidebar and Libre Office's menubar are the main offenders), and what I would much rather is if the system would use Futura's heavy weight option instead of bold, but after searching gconf and for configuration files I can't work out where or how I would do this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I wanted to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my ASUS 900a that only has 4GB of disk space. Of course Ubuntu 11.04 requires 4.4GB, so I started looking for alternatives.I tried to get Lubuntu 11.04, but when I ran the installation process it states that 5GB are required. Not very light weight IMHO if this is the case.I was hoping that someone had an idea of how to install a strippted version of Ubuntu 11.04 (maybe without some of the apps like the LibreOffice Suite) or knew why Lubuntu was asking for so much hard drive space.I'm hoping to move away from my light-weight version of WinXP.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI used to dual-boot, windows 7 and Ubuntu, but like a month ago, i decided to finally kill windows, so when i finished doing so, i had 160 GB. of free space. I never resized my ubuntu partition, since it had like 80 GB. of free space.Yesterday, I re-compiled my kernel, mainly to enable FrameBuffer in the console. So i decided it was time to resize my partition, to use the whole HDD.Turns out, that i had a little bit of problems compiling my kernel, and yes it took really a lot more than i thought ( I had to compile it twice ) but finally i got it working.
i still got some 100 GB. free, so is there anyway to get my system to it's normal weight?.I really don't wanna miss all my info, specially my programs, and customized desktop, it really took me a wile to set compiz just the way i like it.IM REALLY SORRY, I KNOW IT WAS MY FAULT, BUT I REALLY DON'T WANNA LOSE ALL THAT GB. NOR MY SYSTEM.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a business student and we have a stock ticker in the atrium of our building that was being run off of an old 386 computer that bit the dust. Unfortunately, the individuals who wrote the program that updates the ticker (with selected stocks only, from a student run portfolio) are long gone.
Basically, I'm looking for way to display certain stock quotes updated every few minutes on a real-life ticker (green lettering, scrolling side to side) with selected stocks, including the changes in stock price (arrows as well).
I've looked into programs like SMTM, but I'm not quite finding what I need. I don't have much scripting knowledge but I figured this could be done relatively easily, perhaps with GREP?
I would like to know if using VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) is a better method instead of resizing Hard Disks / partitioning etc....What I was thinking of is a method whereby I creeate a VHD file and link it to Windows 7 Boot Loader .. I am actually not in favour of either Virtual Box or VmWare as I have to load into an OS and launch it and I dont personally like the "host" --"guest" way of functioning wherein you have to keep toggling ...Also you dont get a real feel of a virtualized Application or Distro....
It is safe , but you cant test the real potential of a distro in terms of Hardware recognition ..It is a shadow of some existing OS whiin which resources are shared.. For instance my wireless adapter is used as a "wired" connection in Virtual Box.i dont know if the distro per se recognises my wireless. Also RAM is shared so speed is reduced.. So I read that in Win 7 you can create a VHD and also use BCD edit to invoke it at bootup...I am thinking it is in the same manner as a Virtual Box /Vmware way of functioning but with advantages like
1. Quicker bootup
2. Ease of Use ( no need for partition hassle)..Just create / delete HD files
3. Full Hardware resource utilization
4. Independent functioning
5. Dynamic storage
1. 2 TB limitation for files...But that is way too much for me!! I hardly use even 40 GB! Is this advisable or is there a basic flaw in my assumption?....I can have one permanent OS - either Linux or Win 7 and operate my system without bothering about file systems , resize etc
I have installed squido into my ubuntu 8.04. It almost works perfectly but it wont hide my ip. When i go for an example to www.myip.is it shows my real ip & host but says that i connected into that website via my proxy. How i can hide my real ip with squido and use my server's ip as my ip.

So last year I install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and already 10.10 is out. My understanding though 10.10 is not a LTS so should I upgrade? Or will mine automatically upgrade to that version? Is there any real new features to 10.10 that I am missing out on? I can't do anything for another month and a half for the fact I am on deployment in the US Navy but I am highly thinking about moving up.
