Debian Configuration :: Is There Preferred / Better Method For Setting Up Alsa?

Apr 30, 2011

Would like to know the best way (or the pros and cons of different ways) to set up Alsa. I did a search for information on how to setup alsa on my system. I found a lot of out-of-date information even on the alsa wiki. What I did finally locate was two different methods for setup, both seemed somewhat up-to-date. One method at the alsa wiki said to put part of the information in the modprobe directory in a conf file and set up certain aliases. Earlier suggestions for putting information in modprobe.conf or conf.modprobe appear to be outdated and a directory with separate files for each device and a conf extension to the files is currently used. The second method from a thread on the Debian forum said to use alsactl init, set sound levels the way you want and then use alsactl save and restore functionality. Older methods using alsaconf instead of alsactl init appear to be outdated as well. Not sure where to put the call to alsactl restore though. Didn't notice that in the documentation. In case it matters, I'm running Debian Stable and have a built-in sound card on the motherboard with AC97 compatibility. It's a Realtek ALC882.

Is there a preferred or better method for setting up alsa? Is there a good pointer to instructions that are not out-of-date somewhere? Would be very interested to hear how others set sound up on their machines. What do others recommend as best steps to do this?

Networking :: Block Specific Websites - Preferred Method ?

May 19, 2010

I'm trying to block specific websites, preferably using a portion of the url.

For example, if blocking [url], [url] would also be blocked. This implies that simply blocking a single IP using iptables would not work well.

The names to block will be somewhat dynamic, so a list specification would be ideal.

In my case, the LAN has a mix of linux and ms machines, and they all use a linux gateway currently running dnsmasq.

I find suggestions from using /etc/hosts (might work with yp, but not ideal) on the gateway machine, through to using squid on the gateway machine.

Server :: Sending Spam To The Spam Folder?

Apr 30, 2009

I just setup SpamAssassin and what not following this tutorial

[URL]

I am using CentOS 5.3. I was half way through that and got an email that had ***SPAM*** in the subject. Haven't received any more. First of all I want to know if spam will still get delivered, and just have a modified subject. Second, I want to know how to set it up so Spam goes to a user's spam mailbox (Virtual Users). And third of all, is it possible to disable spam filtering on a user basis, preferably using MySQL tables? Is it possible for users to mark a message as spam, and all further messages sent from that address will be sent to spam folder but only for that user?

EDIT: Yes spam is getting delivered with a modified header, on the server site, how can i deliver to spam folder? how to create IMAP virtual mailboxes on request without having to send an email to them first? Using virtual users with Courier Imap

Anyway to make guayadeque (or other) as the true system default for music files?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Are Nvidia Graphics Cards Still Preferred To ATI?

Apr 11, 2010

After a PSU and motherboard failure, I'm about to spec out a new PC. The last time I looked, Nvidia was the preferred graphics chipset as they tended to support Linux better than ATI. Is this still the case?[url].... seem to have lots of ATI cards in stock but hardly any Nvidia (despite offering a similar sized range), but I don't want to get an ATI card if it's not preferred for technological reasons (or even FOSS ethical reasons!).

Debian :: Can't Definitely Mark Mails As Spam

Nov 17, 2015

How to get rid of the messages? Unsubscribing is not an option - I don't want to click on any link contained in the mails.

Debian :: Bug-reporting Tool In Gnome To No Avail So Far?

Jan 8, 2011

I've tried the bug-reporting tool in Gnome to no avail so far. This isn't a huge problem, more a cosmetic one. I'm running Squeeze beta 2, which was a fresh install. I have a Maxtor USB portable HD, which I use to back up personal data. It auto-mounts fine, as soon as I connect it. I have full read-write access from my regular user account; but when I'm finished accessing it, when I right-click and select "Safely remove" I get an error every time. The error has to do with "unable to unmount . . . ." and I wish I had the exact text but I don't. Anyway, when I open a terminal and check the mount point, the drive *has* unmounted, so I'm not worried about data loss. But why the error? BTW, the drive is formatted as one partition with NTFS.

I'm not looking for an answer so much as I am just trying to see that someone involved in trying to get Squeeze ready to release hears about this. It's no big deal, but it looks bad.

Debian Configuration :: CPU Temperature Reporting Varies

Mar 31, 2016

Quick background: the office in my shop is just a partitioned area so is subject to temperature and dust, just as the workshop area is. I've upgraded my desktop from an AMD Phenom II X4 955 which used to suffer overheating problems (despite regular cleaning) to an AMD FX-6300 on a Gigabyte 970A-D3P motherboard. For cooling I've fitted a Cooler Master Hyper TX3, plus various fans. Fresh install of Debian 8.3.

The cooler has certainly solved the overheating issues and the machine runs very quietly, rather than sounding like a 747 at take-off. But I'm now having some problems getting consistent reporting on temperatures.

The BIOS reports temperatures from the CPU which seem to be fairly consistently in the mid to high 30s (C).

lm-sensors and hddtemp have been installed.

sensors-detect reports (just the last section)
Code: Select allNow follows a summary of the probes I have just done.
Just press ENTER to continue:

Driver `k10temp' (autoloaded):
  * Chip `AMD Family 15h thermal sensors' (confidence: 9)

Driver `fam15h_power' (autoloaded):
  * Chip `AMD Family 15h power sensors' (confidence: 9)

[Code].....

psensor identifies AMD CPU and the NVidia GPU, apparently correctly, as it does the HDDs.

So, my problem is that the CPU temps reported by psensor and the panel app vary quite significantly with those that are reported in the BIOS. My thinking is that the BIOS is correct and that the software is either misreporting the temperatures or using the wrong sensors.

On the old machine I used to get a temperature from each core, just like in the BIOS, but now I'm only getting a single CPU reading.

Debian Installation :: Lenny In OpenSolaris - Reporting 520T Drive?

Mar 18, 2011

I am attempting to get Debian Lenny 5.0.8 to run on an OpenSolaris snv_134 lx-branded zone. Debian 6.0.0 is a total flop due to the included udev requiring a kernel >= 2.6.26 and the kernel provided by the lx26 brand being only 2.6.18.So I installed Debian 5.0.8 into a VirtualBox VM, configured it, then tarred up the install with the following command as root, from /:

tar -cjf /mnt/share/debian-5.0.8.tar.bz2 --exclude dev --exclude sys --exclude mnt --exclude proc *

I then installed that archive into a solaris zone, booted it, and had to run

perl -pi -e "s,1 1,1 0," /etc/fstab

in order to fix up the fstab. Now it boots (with a handful of warnings), but the problem I'm having is that I can't run apt. I get:

E: Couldn't determine free space in /var/cache/apt/archives/ - statvfs (75 Value too large for defined data type)

Server :: Df Reporting 100% But Du Reporting 20%?

Apr 15, 2011

Today morning I logged on to one of our servers (through ssh -X) to perform a routine maintenance. When I tried to open a GUI application, it failed to connect to the X server of the workstation. Eventually I ended up issuing the command

Code:

df -h /

and shockingly it showed that / is 100% used. I checked / using

Code:

du --max-depth=1 -xh /

to check the sizes of the individual directories, which showed that only about 18% of the / is used and that confused me badly. There was no quick solutions when I googled around; but luckily I found the following link which nicely explained the issue I had:

[URL]

All I did was found out the services responsible for those unreleased files (using lsof +L1) and restarted them. That is it. Now df reports only 18% of the disk is used and all my X things started working again, thanks to Walker.

Debian Configuration :: Anti-spam Proxy For Mail On Server?

Jun 20, 2010

I was wondering if there was some kind of anti-spam proxy available for debian, that could serve as a layer between my ISP's mailserver and my email client. Something light, as it needs to be installed to a guruplug server with not much storage available. It would be great if I don't need to configure a fully fledged mail server but if it can function on it's own, only filtering spam messages. I already found assp and qpsmtp, but I find these very difficult to setup and assp is like huge.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Get GPU Scaling Method To Save

May 18, 2010

The problem now is the TV. It's cutting off a lot of pixels, and I can get it almost to fit if I enable flat panel scaling and set GPU Scaling Method to "Centered". However, when I restart the X server, it always returns to "Stretched". Debian :: Dynamic Input Method For German?

Nov 16, 2010

i'm running Debian "lenny" x86 on KDE. Back in Windows, I was able to switch between keyboard input languages by pressing certain hotkeys on my English keyboard. For instance if I switched to German, the semicolon button would become I think a umlaut or o umlaut. Is there any close equivalent in Debian? I know of 'dpkg-reconfigure console-data', however even if it did work (which in my case it didn't), it would be a hassle to type in commands at the terminal to switch between keyboard input languages, compared to just pressing hotkeys.
