View 5 Replies View Relatedi've got a few questions about iptables. i know how to set up ip tables to only allow from an ip address or a subnetting ip addresses. question is how do i allow from 2 different networks? would i need to create 2 lines of entry in iptables to the same port? e: allow 10.168.1.1 and 196.168.1.1 on port 22 is there a way to put all that in 1 line or would i need to create to rules for the port? i know i can use the ssh allow or deny but i'd like to stop access even before it gets to the ssh. stop it at the source kinda thing.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got two virtual machines running, the first VM (VM1) has two network interfaces, one bridged with my real lan, one a private subnet. The second VM (VM2) has one nic, only on the private subnet.
I have VM1 acting as a router for VM2, giving access to my real lan for internet access. The problem I'm having is I cannot get VM1 to forward ports 80 (http) or 222 (ssh) to VM2 from my real lan.

If I allow, my server's IP is:

If I allow 11.11.11.11, and block 22.22.22.22
22.22.22.22 can't access the server
But if I allow 11.11.11.0/24, and block 22.22.22.22
22.22.22.22 can still access the server!!
Does anyone know why that is?
I am using dyndns to keep track of my smartphone's ip address. The idea is to be able to ssh into my home network, protected by an iptables firewall. If I use the command: # iptables -I INPUT 9 -s myname.dyndns.org -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT it updates using the current ip address, but the next time I get an ip address update to my phone and update dyndns to properly provide nslookups, this is not being updated in iptables unless I restart my firewall. Is there a better way to do this?

i have sudo priveleges and can install via update manager. i read somewhere that compizfusion might affect access permissions and i do use compiz and emerald at the same time.
I've tried the bug-reporting tool in Gnome to no avail so far. This isn't a huge problem, more a cosmetic one. I'm running Squeeze beta 2, which was a fresh install. I have a Maxtor USB portable HD, which I use to back up personal data. It auto-mounts fine, as soon as I connect it. I have full read-write access from my regular user account; but when I'm finished accessing it, when I right-click and select "Safely remove" I get an error every time. The error has to do with "unable to unmount . . . ." and I wish I had the exact text but I don't. Anyway, when I open a terminal and check the mount point, the drive *has* unmounted, so I'm not worried about data loss. But why the error? BTW, the drive is formatted as one partition with NTFS.
I'm not looking for an answer so much as I am just trying to see that someone involved in trying to get Squeeze ready to release hears about this. It's no big deal, but it looks bad.
installed squeeze, but top keeps reporting 0.00 most of the time, and def it's wrong cause we have another server same hardware but lenny, and its over 2.00 same load. what can i check or do to fix this? thx

Quick background: the office in my shop is just a partitioned area so is subject to temperature and dust, just as the workshop area is. I've upgraded my desktop from an AMD Phenom II X4 955 which used to suffer overheating problems (despite regular cleaning) to an AMD FX-6300 on a Gigabyte 970A-D3P motherboard. For cooling I've fitted a Cooler Master Hyper TX3, plus various fans. Fresh install of Debian 8.3.
The cooler has certainly solved the overheating issues and the machine runs very quietly, rather than sounding like a 747 at take-off. But I'm now having some problems getting consistent reporting on temperatures.
The BIOS reports temperatures from the CPU which seem to be fairly consistently in the mid to high 30s (C).
lm-sensors and hddtemp have been installed.

psensor identifies AMD CPU and the NVidia GPU, apparently correctly, as it does the HDDs.
So, my problem is that the CPU temps reported by psensor and the panel app vary quite significantly with those that are reported in the BIOS. My thinking is that the BIOS is correct and that the software is either misreporting the temperatures or using the wrong sensors.
On the old machine I used to get a temperature from each core, just like in the BIOS, but now I'm only getting a single CPU reading.

Believe I am not the only one using Debian Testing with KDE4.
Just recently after update Squeeze, Adobe and Google chrome disappeared from my gnome main menu, and even I wanted to add them by myself, nothing worked out.
Yet another problem, I have to use EDUROAM in university, when i use Debian, with the same strength of signal, it can not make a connection, but can be very well used in Windows. I am suspecting 'Network manager'.

I am attempting to get Debian Lenny 5.0.8 to run on an OpenSolaris snv_134 lx-branded zone. Debian 6.0.0 is a total flop due to the included udev requiring a kernel >= 2.6.26 and the kernel provided by the lx26 brand being only 2.6.18.So I installed Debian 5.0.8 into a VirtualBox VM, configured it, then tarred up the install with the following command as root, from /:
tar -cjf /mnt/share/debian-5.0.8.tar.bz2 --exclude dev --exclude sys --exclude mnt --exclude proc *
I then installed that archive into a solaris zone, booted it, and had to run
perl -pi -e "s,1 1,1 0," /etc/fstab
in order to fix up the fstab. Now it boots (with a handful of warnings), but the problem I'm having is that I can't run apt. I get:

Today morning I logged on to one of our servers (through ssh -X) to perform a routine maintenance. When I tried to open a GUI application, it failed to connect to the X server of the workstation. Eventually I ended up issuing the command

and shockingly it showed that / is 100% used. I checked / using

du --max-depth=1 -xh /
to check the sizes of the individual directories, which showed that only about 18% of the / is used and that confused me badly. There was no quick solutions when I googled around; but luckily I found the following link which nicely explained the issue I had:

All I did was found out the services responsible for those unreleased files (using lsof +L1) and restarted them. That is it. Now df reports only 18% of the disk is used and all my X things started working again, thanks to Walker.
I have a recent install of squeeze. Beside applications from the squeeze repos, I have installed a few applications from their own deb files / repositories, such as Skype, Google-Chrome (not the chromium in the squeeze repos), Opera and Teamviewer.
All those placed their menu entries in the gnome menu, however periodically, at a new login, the Google-Chrome and Teamviewer menu items are missing. The applications are still there, but they dont show anymore in the menus. Only way to get them back I found so far is to reinstall the application.
I am using Wheezy 7.9, Gnome Classic, gdm3 . I have two menu instances of Master PDF Editor, one instance in the Graphics menu and the other in the Office category. I have tried using Alacarte to remove one of the instances. Alacarte shows that the item has been removed but in fact it still shows up in the menu. The procedure I used was to open Alacarte as root user, delete the item, close Alacarte and re-start the computer.

I've done a bit of googling for lxde temp sensor, and most of the discussions I saw referred to installing lm-sensors, which apparently I did not yet have, although on my old laptop the temperature was shown correctly. I believe the automatic sensor location is off and I need to give it the correct location manually. I am unsure of how to do that, and it makes sense that it's hardware specific. After installing lm-sensors, I saw that sensors-detect provides me with a list of the correct temp sensors in my computer, but I'm unsure how to save those results so the computer can use them.
View 5 Replies View Relatedis there a way to allow a program mounting a drive without requiring it to ask for sudo password (apart from running it with sudo)? To be more specific, I'm annoyed by the sudo password request by TrueCrypt whenever it needs to mount a volume.
I've thought about creating another user, allowing it to mount volumes and then running TrueCrypt as this user at boot. I don't know whether GNU/Linux allows for such policies... maybe I should look into SELinux?
EDIT: For the issue at hand (encrypted USB stick both on Windows and Linux), I'm investigating FreeOTFE. I'm still curious about the privileges issue, anyway.
I've built a new kernel (2.6.34) on our workstation at work. It boots and runs beautifully, but there is one minor problem. I created the kernel as a Debian package along with the kernel headers. Upon installing both and attempting to build the nVidia driver for said kernel, the installer tells me that it cannot determine the version and quits. This happens even if I manually specify the path to the headers. What's going on here, did I miss something during my compilation of the new kernel?

View 2 Replies View RelatedBasically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!
Firefox 3.5 has a critical java script vulnerability as noted in the recent news. I had to manually update to 3.5.1 using the mozilla tarball because there's still no Firefox 3.5.1 in Fedora Updates or even Fedora Updates Testing repositories. Is this normal? I didn't want to resort to using the mozilla one because now I can't use flash (my system is 64 bit and mozilla only seems to offer a 32bit tar file of Firefox) and having two Firefoxs means dealing with the ProfileManager, separate bookmarks and so on.
I'm trying to find out if I'm just looking in the wrong place, I tried the normal mirrors for "updates" for Fedora 11 and then updates-testing and also the baseurl for "updates" to get rid of the mirror update delay. None of them seem to have 3.5.1 ?
Does anyone know when we'll see Firefox 3.0.19 packaged for 8.04 LTS? I'm still stuck at 3.0.18. And what will happen after this? My understanding is that after .19 Mozilla is dropping support for FF 3.0.
Upgrade policies not withstanding, I find it rather annoying when an "LTS" release doesn't keep up with the most security-critical package in the distro, the browser. 8.04 LTS should have moved to FF 3.5+ a *long* time ago. Now it seems it will be forced to do so or else just forget about browser updates for the last year of 8.04?
I know I can install the current Firefox with ubuntuzilla, I just keep wishing Ubuntu would do it for me.
