Debian Installation :: Lenny In OpenSolaris - Reporting 520T Drive?
Mar 18, 2011
I am attempting to get Debian Lenny 5.0.8 to run on an OpenSolaris snv_134 lx-branded zone. Debian 6.0.0 is a total flop due to the included udev requiring a kernel >= 2.6.26 and the kernel provided by the lx26 brand being only 2.6.18.So I installed Debian 5.0.8 into a VirtualBox VM, configured it, then tarred up the install with the following command as root, from /:
tar -cjf /mnt/share/debian-5.0.8.tar.bz2 --exclude dev --exclude sys --exclude mnt --exclude proc *
I then installed that archive into a solaris zone, booted it, and had to run
perl -pi -e "s,1 1,1 0," /etc/fstab
in order to fix up the fstab. Now it boots (with a handful of warnings), but the problem I'm having is that I can't run apt. I get:
E: Couldn't determine free space in /var/cache/apt/archives/ - statvfs (75 Value too large for defined data type)
I am trying to install Debian from a USB stick (which was prepared by unetbootin). The installer / kernel loads, and setup runs fine until It searches for a CD-ROM drive. My computer doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, but the net install ISO has been burned onto my USB stick. Is there some way that I can mount my USB stick as the cd-rom drive? it's of type FAT32 if it matters.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 first and OpenSolaris 2009.06 second. Ubuntu does not appear in OpenSolaris' boot-loader. How do I install Grub and have the boot list come up so that Ubuntu AND OpenSolaris appear and are operational and such?
Recently we started getting these errors in syslog:
Code: [31944.813993] hda: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } [31944.813993] ide: failed opcode was: unknown [31944.813993] hda: drive not ready for command [31949.822516] hda: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
[Code]....
Also the machine was under very high load and almost impossible to connect to.
I've searched, and found mostly answers involving broken hard disks or other hardware issues, but this is unlikely to be the case here: it started happening on several machines at the same time. They are HP DL580G5, and hda is the DVD player. It's not being used. The only thing we've recently changed is that we installed HAL (as a dependency of pcscd), and sure enough, killing HAL freed up the cpu and stopped the stream of errors. Sadly, pcscd requires HAL..
Has anyone seen this? Are there known problems with HAL in Lenny on HP hardware? I know I could do hal-disable-polling /dev/hda but I don't want to simply ignore a potential problem.
EDIT: versions used are HAL 0.5.11-8, pcscd 1.4.102-1 and kernel 2.6.26.2-amd64
i just burnt a debian lenny 504 live disk. i don't think there's a way to install it to hard drive. i just did a google search and it appears that the latest debian lenny 504 cannot be installed to hard drive with the live cd. from what i have read, i need to get a "netinstall" iso (this is new territory for me). can anyone supply me with a link for an iso with a hash verification? i would be most grateful. the disk i had previously must be corrupted because the install quits at 5%.
I am trying to install Debian 5.0 "Lenny" on a PC with a very new hardware config (i3 processor, DDR3 RAM,LG SATA DVD drive, and Seagate SATA HDD). During the hardware detection phase of installation, I get a message saying the driver for my CD drive is not known, and asking me to select one manually. The options I get are only 'devcdrom', which does not work, and my installation cannot proceed.
I tried the following:
1. I read in a similar query that to use SATA DVD drives, I will have to set some boot options, so tried entering install libatapi_enabled=1 as an install option. This showed 'unknown parameter' error followed by same problem.
2. My Intel m/b BIOS has an option to set the DVD drive to "Native" or "Legacy", default is Native. I also tried changing this to "Legacy". Still same problem.
3. Read that I have to point to different drivers, but don't know how to do this during the installation.
Basically, I have no trouble booting off a really old kernel like 2.6.18-6. If I try to boot off the newest one installed with Lenny, I get errors such as "mounting /dev/ on /root/dev failed...ditto for /sys on /root/sys" almost as if it's failing to find the drive. This finishes up with "target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init" and I'm dropped into a busybox shell. It's an ordinary SATA drive, which is being used as an OS drive only. It seems as if something has changed with the newer kernel, but I have no idea where to start or what to look for.
I have a backup drive formatted ext4 which got filled to no space left, so I deleted some files and folders to make space on it , emptied the trash, files and folders are gone , but it stll says I got no drive space left on it and cant copy a file to it because it thinks its full lol I freed up like 15gb of space on it , have rebooted several times ..
i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).
I'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.
I haven't used Debian in 1 year or so and would like to know if there is any possible way to do a fresh installation of Debian Lenny or Squeeze (either or) and not install Exim? I get to the package selection section of the Debian Installer and I de-select "Desktop Environment" & "Standard System" so nothing is selected and it still be default installs Exim. Is there a way to omit this from the install?
I recently bought a new Samsung netbook N310 and want to install dual-boot Debian lenny along with windows xp home edition. My CPU is like this: Intel Atom CPU N270 1.6GHz which architectures and kernels I should download from the cd installation? there are so many:alpha, amd64, armel, hppa, i386, ia64, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, and sparc.
Had an old Power Mac G5 (dual 1.6ghz 256MB ram) collecting dust, so I did some research and came upon Debian Lenny. Idea was to setup the mac as a home server to share with Win7 HTPC/OSX 10.6 macbook pro/Ubuntu9.10 dell laptop machines in my house. With so many different OS's running in my house, I thought it would be the ideal solution! Downloaded and installed the Debian on the G5. Now after the fresh install.
I hear the "mac chime." Then I get:
Stage 1 Boot:
This screen loops with a folder and the finder icon w/ a ? mark.... Also, the longer this loops the faster the fans go!
I installed ubuntu on my dual boot Debian/Lenny and windows 7 toshiba laptop. Now when I try to boot Lenny i get the following error messages:
kinit : name_to_dev_t(/dev/sda6)=dev(8,6) kinit : trying to resume from /dev/sda6 kinit : No resume image doing normal boot ....
[code].....
I can see the whole filesystem is there. The problem may have something to do with the boot loader. I was originally using Grub 1.5 when I just had Lenny and Windows 7, but when I installed ubuntu it has installed GRUB 2. When I use the debian install cd to go into rescue mode, all the init scripts are still where they should be. Another thing that happened when I partioned of a section for ubuntu all the dev numbers went up one. In the debian /boot/grub/menu.lst windows 7 was booting under (hd0,1) now it boots under (hd0,2) debian used to boot from (hd0,7) with root=/dev/sda8 but now it is under (hd0,8) root=/dev/sda9 in the GRUB2 menu.lst. Is there anyway to get my Debian back up and running? After 6 months of studying it at uni I am finally learning my way around and want it back.
I have Lenny installed & it works fine, in a few days will add Windows 7 (want to dual boot - 1 250 GB hard disk) used gparted to free up lots of room for Win 7
- My question is this, Debian then Win or Win then Debian (I want GRUB to manage both so hope since Lenny is installed Win 7 will use the free space no problem) ?
currently I'm running postgresql-8.3 server on lenny 32 bits. There are also installed some standard packages but in the near future I'd like to install mysql server on the same machine. I believe that 64 bit system will be faster so I decided to change from 32 to 64 bit. how to migrate postgresql database from 32 to 64 bits. I have postgresql data dir on separate volume. Will it be possible if I just use it as it is now in new 64 bit system with the same postgresql server config files or do I have to dump data and restore it in new installation ?
I am thinking of upgrading from my production Lenny to Squeeze. Is it better to upgrade from Lenny directly, or reformat my hard drive and install from fresh (I do have backup of my /home)?
I have a question about dist-upgrading. I'm using 5.0 lenny with KDE 3.5 and I want to upgrade, but I don't want to change my KDE to that new version of disaster. Will the apt-get dist-upgrade update my kde?
A week or so ago, I downloaded the current stable and burned it. (lenny)And on the 5th I started installing and finished on the 6th.I then see squeeze was released LOL.I have started using the system and would rather not start over from scratch.(but I will if it is the *best* way to go)I am coming from Ubuntu but I do know my way around the system...
All the threads I see start off by editing the sources list to change lenny to squeezeIs there an easier way?I've looked for a HOWTO but did not see one.I am not looking to stop any part of the system from upgrading. In ubuntu I have gone from distro to distro, but that option is not offered.I checked "Software Sources" -> Updates I do not see the Ubuntu option of allowing distro updates ot be offered.
I have problem with installing Deluge. I did not find any manual how to install Deluge. And I wanna install deluge newest version, and that is on Debian testing packages. So how can I install Deluge from debian testing packages. I read a little bit Deluge forum and there I see, there is lot of problems with Deluge on Debian Lenny. And all I need is use Deluge from web interfaces, thats all. How could I set it up?
I would like to install openSolaris under opensuse 11.0 X64 using Virtual Machine. How to achieve this? Is it necessary to have isolated partition for virtual openSolaris?
Using VirtualBox on Ubuntu 9.10. Processor is Intel Q8200 Debian amd64 ISOs should work on my system but I had to resort to i386, which installed flawlessly despite a couple of kernel panics once X started. I don't think the problem is VirtualBox and I'm about to reboot and try loading the CD normally to see if that works.
I'm trying to install debian lenny on a Asus A7V board, with PCI ethernet card containing RTL8139 chipset.I'm using the netinstall cd. Installation fails because the network card is not recognized during the install, thus no DHCP, thus no internet.Kernel is 2.26.x
I'm giving up trying to install Lenny as a server. The netinstall won't recognise my realtek 8139 chipset on the PCI ethernet NIC. I've googled so much i'm freakin loosing it. The install fails while getting an IP adress via DHCP. So a new networkcard is in order. Why not go for gigabit lan then. Which PCI gigabit LAN card is 100% guaranteed to work with Lenny net install cd?
I have tried several times--unscuccessfully-- to upgrade to the testing branch. I change my apt sources to "squeeze". I get either "err" or "ign" on a lot of the sources when updating. I have seen several methods as to how to upgrade from stable to testing and none have worked so far. I have tried "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade" as well as using aptitude to do the same similar commands. What I find is the following:
* My kernel never gets upgraded at all.
* udev is broken and mice and keyboard do not work.
* Many packages are held back and not upgraded.
I do have a debian 5 image to re-install and try again but I am not finding it to be as easy as many debian people claim. Also, I did a fresh install of squeeze using the net-install image. When the install finished and I rebooted, the computer hung on boot up. It never seemed to read where the kernel was. It would boot up, the system would beep and then reboot never finding the kernel or boot block apparently. how to get squeeze on my box? It is a 1.2 Ghz computer with 512mb ram with the intel i810 southbridge chipset I believe.
I just upgraded to lenny (stable) from a working etch system. It went pretty nicely but I'm having a problem with the print system.
Ok, I have an HP Laserjet 4M+ connected to my system by USB. (I have another color printer too and a scanner but I don't use them often).
I use CUPS. I never bothered with the HPLIP packages because straight cups has always worked well.
What happens now is that I'll send a job to the printer and nothing will happen. The printer won't get it. Looking at CUPS on the localhost:631 page I can see that the printer is on, connected, ready; the job is there too but just stuck on "processing".
Now here's the thing. If I manually load the ehci_hcd module with "modprobe ehci_hcd" then the job will make it to the printer and it will print.
I can't just make that module load at boot time because if I do and the printer is off, it doesn't work. (I have to unload it and reload it). For whatever reason, I have to make sure that module gets loaded AFTER the printer is turned on, or nothing gets sent to the printer!
I've done some searches on here and can't seem to find anyone making any mention of this one site I found. Has anyone used the Debian Lenny KDE32 images from this site?[URL].. I downloaded it and it works GREAT! I think the solution for us poor Lenny holdouts might have been found. Especially those who have ati radeon cards. As background. I am running a Radeon 9000 pro agp card. I've been looking for SOME way to get KDE4 that works. Kubuntu, forget it. Mandriva was close but I'd miss apt too much. I was thinking of trying backports. But it seems these guys have already done the work. I downloaded their Lenny KDE32 image and burned it. Be aware, this is a DVD image, not a cd image. At 786megs it won't fit on a cd. But I put it on a dvd and it worked fine. Booted up to a nice clean running KDE4 on a lenny system. I still have some tinkering if I install it (blacklist pcspeaker for example, and get audio cd's to play) But here is my catch. I brought up the screensaver and chose my favorite: Solar winds. It a Gl screensaver, so 3d has to be working good.
<Big Red Flashing Sign that reads, "NEWBIE with two Linux books and very little brain"> I just installed Sarge from a CD onto an old PC and ended up with Debian Linux 3.1, Kernel 2.4.

I did not configure any servers or do any package selections but did manage to get the internet connection working (actually Debian managed that all by itself). I'd like to "upgrade" to Lenny.
Do I need to upgrade to Etch first or can I go straight to Lenny? At what point do I "upgrade" the kernel (before upgrading to Etch/Lenny? After?)
