I can't hear any sound in Debian with my new Asus motherboard . In Windows i have no problem.
Linux was reinstalled from scratch and speakers are connected to the green port of the motherboard.
I tried to find a solution all around the web without success.

I don't get any sound with any version of Lenny on my new ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard. However the sound works fine when I boot from the Debian Live 60 Alpha1 AMD64 KDE DVD. I can always wait until Squeeze is released and then do an upgrade but I'd like to get the sound working now. Any suggestions?

I upgaded my system last weekend with a Gigabyte GZ-X58A-UD5 motherboard, i7 processor, ASUS EAH5770 video card, and 12 GB RAM. Sound has been erratic since then. It generally works for a short time after a reboot, but after awhile (within a few hours) it stops working properly or even completely. I've tried several different settings in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, but nothing I've tried helps.
I am running Kubuntu 9.10 64-bit.

I tried to listen mp3 on in, but it was too silent (of course, I tried to put speakers to be louder).. I switched to winXP (as a second OS) on this computer, and sound volume is ok, so I suppose it's problem in OpenSuse... I have ASROCK N68C-S UCC motherboard with nForce 630a sound chip on it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm testing a rather old motherboard (PC-Chips A31G) with both Ubutu Karmic and Lucid, everything seems to work fine but video playing.
I tried flv, mp4 and mpg with both mplayer and totem, but I can only get sound with no video, well, not a black screen but a deformed image (I don't attach an image because every attempt to capture the screen gets a black or transparent video).
I already installed ubuntu-restricted-extras package witho no luck.
What I don't understand is that, if I switch to another motherboard (using the same HDD), everything works perfect. I guess it's a problem with the motherboard's video chipset, but would like to confirm this and know whether there is a solution.

I just assembled a new computer with Intel Core I3 processor and Asus P8H67 motherboard and 4 MB of memory. It has a 2TB Hitachi Deskstar Hard Drive and Asus DVD. I am trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 directly (without first loading Windows) without success.
I have tried 4 separate downloads of Ubuntu - 64 bit, 32 bit with Desktop and Alternative. I have changed a variety of parameters and various tricks suggested on other threads. The Desktop (32 and 64) versions get me to Busybox shell with message (Initramfs) Unable to find a medium using live file system. The Alternative version hangs with the messages:
RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM image startgin at 0;
No filesystem could mount root, tried ext3, ext2, ext4, fuseblk;
Kernal panic - not syncing VHS;
Unable to mount root fs on unkown block(1,0).
For parameters I think have tried them all (but not in all combinations). I tried exiting twice from BusyBox as suggested on forums but that just hangs the system. I also turn off the quiet and splash to try and see what is going on....but it is too complex and goes to fast for me to follow.
A final suggestion was that the P8H67 is too new for Ubuntu 10.10 and to try the new version 11 coming out...I am new to Linux and reluctant to try a Beta
The motherboard has a SiS190 100/10 Ethernet Device. Apparently it worked once during installation and then never again. View 9 Replies View Relatedafter searching a lot and trying to re-install Alsa and pulse-audio, trying the older kernell, editing the alsa-config files and a lot of reboots I cant get any sound out of my new laptop. It worked 2 or 3 times, and if I leaved Windows with audio disabled it would never work in Ubuntu, but now I cant ever get any sound from my speaker. The laptop is pretty new/recent, and it as an Bang&Olufsen ICEpower speaker with a gorgeous quality that I never expected from a laptop. I use Ubuntu in a lot of my programming classes and at home to to study and also to program micro-controllers and to play a bit with open-cv to do some image processing. So having sound is almost a must, programming hours and hours with no sound is driving me crazy :/
The laptop an a Core i7 64 bits processor but I'm using a 32 bits Ubuntu 10.04 because I'm also part of the robotic soccer team of my university and they can run code compiled in 64 bits machines so I just opted from the 32 bits distro to remain compatible, everything is working fine now, the graphics card as also given some fight, but its now running perfectly.

There is no sound on my Debian notebook.I added myself to "audio" group and have "alsa-utils", "pulseaudio", and "firmware-linux" packages installed.

I'm starting to spec out a new GNU/Linux boxen. I'm considering the ASUS P6X58D Premium motherboard. Has anyone had any experience with this board in terms of compatibility with openSUSE 11.2/11.3? I'm mainly concerned about:
on-board sound: Realtek ALC889
ethernet: Marvell 88E8056
new interfaces: SATA3, USB3.0
being able to use: AHCI (which I had to turn off on a netbook, Acer Aspire 1410, for hard drive stability), 64-bit kernel I'm planning to use an i7-930 or i7-950 (should the price drop in August as rumored) with 6 GB DDR3 1333 RAM (not planning to overclock, as yet). The graphics card will probably be an NVidia GT240 or so (budgeting about $100 for the graphics card).
Also, I'm hoping to move some old IDE drives over using IDE->SATA 1 bridge cards. Any advice on this? Or should I just get a new SATA 3 drive? For the optical drives (DVD RW/CD RW), I'd like to use bridge cards since there's no benefit for the higher speed SATA interface, or is there?
P.S. For the naive question: As I haven't dealt with 64-bit installs before... I would need the 64-bit kernel for full access to all the extra address space, correct? After that, I can still run 32-bit apps, with a slight speed penalty?

After I've installed an ASUS graphics card (ATI chip) my Ubuntu got no sound at all. My Codec is: VIA VT1708B 8-Ch. I've chosen "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" in Sound Preferences. Windows on the same machine works properly.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a used Asus eee 1001PX. It came installed with some spyware called windows which I replaced with jessie. Everything works great but one thing. When I plug in headphones I get no sound in the headphones. If I have some audio running and plug them in while it's playing it doesn't cut the audio from the built in speakers off like it should do. If I start and look at Output Devices in pauvcontrol it seems like it at least recognizes that I have headphones inserted.
I didn't have a chance to test if the physical audio jack was broken while it had Windows running on it but assuming that it's not physically broken, what might be wrong? I know very little about audio, alsa, pulse and that kind of stuff so I hardly know even where to start.

I just lost my weekend trying to install Xubuntu 10.04 on my pc I made the ps a while back - its built on a ASUS P4S800D-E motherboard and it has an ATI Radeon 9200 LE graphics card. It has a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, 1Gb of memory and a 160Gb PATA/IDE hard drive (I unplugged the SATA drives) Every time I installed or made a tweak to the config it failed in the same way. It showed its failure by continually repeating the first character typed. Regardless of whether this was the password screen for synaptic or just the first character typed into a terminal. Until the first character was typed the mouse seemed to work ok but then it would stall too
I've tried most things, running Xorg with/without an xorg.conf file, loading the ppa kernel and tweaking loads of bios and grub boot parameters all to no avail. So I think I want a more linux friendly graphics card and I fear I may need a new motherboard. Can someone recommend a replacement graphics card for this motherboard? I recently bought a new notebook, an Asus N73JQ. This notebook has a special sound system called "Bang & Olufsen ICEpower". The first thing I did was to install Ubuntu 64-bit. After installing and rebooting I am certain that i heard the Ubuntu login sound but ten minutes later when i tried playing music with Spotify all sound was gone. The login sound now gone too. I have tried editing settings in System -> Preferences -> Sound, with no luck. The settings dialog lists two sound devices, "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" and "HDA NVidia Digital Stereo (HDMI)". Sound output device is set to the Internal Analog ** device. I have tried different profiles for this device but nothing seems to work. Does anyone here have the same notebook/sound system with a working sound configuration?
