Ubuntu Multimedia :: Asus M4A77TD PRO - Poor Sound Playback

Feb 28, 2011

how poor is sound playback in Ubuntu? I don't know if this is a general problem in all distros, but as a beginner i decided to install Ubuntu as its popular for users with minimalistic or not much knowledge about Linux at all. So in Windows playback sound quality is great, but in Ubuntu it is terrible, why is that? My soundcard is motherboard integrated - Asus M4A77TD PRO. In other forums someone give me advice to write this

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 5.1 Surround Sound Plays Very Poor Quality

Nov 8, 2010

I got a 5.1 desktop sound sys for my recently built gaming rig. It sounds great. On Windows, that is. In ubuntu when I'm playing music, primarily when the subwoofer plays the bass, the speakers sound like they're farting and ripping phone books in half. Also, they get very statticy and sort of quiet. In sound preferences, analog stereo duplex is selected, if that's of any value. How can I get good sound playback in ubuntu?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Poor Sound In Fullscreen Flash Video Lenovo T60?

Jan 12, 2011

Sound is fine in flash video, but gets garbled in fullscreen.

Another problem I'm having is that when I turn the volume past 60% using the sound applet on the panel, it gets very distorted. If I open sound preferences, I notice it is in the "amplified" zone at this point, so I have to keep it in the "unamplified" zone, but then it's not loud enough.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Play Anything - Music - Flash - Videos - Games - 'muffled' - Poor Sound Quality

Apr 7, 2010

I just got my hands on an MSI E7235-295US and slapped Ubuntu 9.10 on it. So far everything's worked great, but I am beginning to get a bit concerned about my sound quality. The laptop itself has 5 speakers + subwoofer so I should be getting 5.1 sound, if I understand things correctly (the newegg link should provide more details) and when I play anything (music, flash, videos, games, etc...) the sound comes out 'muffled'. Almost as if it is in a concert hall, maybe. I initially wondered if the problem is related to the 5 speakers and if the sound is initially only setup for two. If that is the case, nothing I've done has seemed to made any real difference. I've tried changing the master/pci channels, but it only hides it a little, and doesn't solve the problem.

This seemed to be on the right track, but the laptop is still really new and not listed in the alsa file.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Playback Like In Windows 7

Feb 14, 2010

Is there any way to make Ubuntu play sound like Windows 7? I mean when i, for example, listen to music in Windows 7 the sound is much clearer and besides that i can use room correction to obtain a better surround feeling, but when i listen to music in Ubuntu the sound is not very clear and it sounds like stereo even though the sound is played back through all the speakers (the bass is also a little bit to high).

So far i've tried installing the alsa driver and modifying the output levels of each channel, but didn't quite have the same result as the room correction feature in Windows, and the sound wasn't any clearer either. Note: I have an onboard Realtek soundcard and Logitech x530 speakers

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Playback Skips Or Just Stops

May 17, 2010

So I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and then to 10.04, and I love it!

But there's only one key problem -- sound playback.

When I'm playing an mp3 file in rhythmbox, or any other player, it'll skip when I maximize or minimize windows, or do anything that really uses resources.

And on top of that, if I just let it keep going, it'll eventually just stop playing the song, and the progress bar will jump forward and do the same for other songs, not even playing them.

even songs on pandora.com skip, but don't stop playing

I've deduced that it's probably a sound driver thing. I've downloaded the driver for my card, but I the directions tell me to install it in

/usr/src/linux/driver/sound

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Asus K52F No Sound

I've seen several posts with people having problems of the speakers not muting when headphones are plugged in.I have no sound from my speakers to begin with.I am by no means an ubuntu expert, so please bear with me.From what I've seen, there are many variations of the Asus K52F. Mine has an Intel Pentium P6200 processor. So far as I can learn, it's got a Conexant sound chipset. Ubuntu does not even seem to recognise that a sound card is present.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound In 10.04 Asus N53J-SX070V

Mar 21, 2011

after searching a lot and trying to re-install Alsa and pulse-audio, trying the older kernell, editing the alsa-config files and a lot of reboots I cant get any sound out of my new laptop. It worked 2 or 3 times, and if I leaved Windows with audio disabled it would never work in Ubuntu, but now I cant ever get any sound from my speaker. The laptop is pretty new/recent, and it as an Bang&Olufsen ICEpower speaker with a gorgeous quality that I never expected from a laptop. I use Ubuntu in a lot of my programming classes and at home to to study and also to program micro-controllers and to play a bit with open-cv to do some image processing. So having sound is almost a must, programming hours and hours with no sound is driving me crazy :/

The laptop an a Core i7 64 bits processor but I'm using a 32 bits Ubuntu 10.04 because I'm also part of the robotic soccer team of my university and they can run code compiled in 64 bits machines so I just opted from the 32 bits distro to remain compatible, everything is working fine now, the graphics card as also given some fight, but its now running perfectly.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Asus N73JQ - Playing Music With Spotify All Sound Was Gone

I recently bought a new notebook, an Asus N73JQ. This notebook has a special sound system called "Bang & Olufsen ICEpower". The first thing I did was to install Ubuntu 64-bit. After installing and rebooting I am certain that i heard the Ubuntu login sound but ten minutes later when i tried playing music with Spotify all sound was gone. The login sound now gone too. I have tried editing settings in System -> Preferences -> Sound, with no luck. The settings dialog lists two sound devices, "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" and "HDA NVidia Digital Stereo (HDMI)". Sound output device is set to the Internal Analog ** device. I have tried different profiles for this device but nothing seems to work. Does anyone here have the same notebook/sound system with a working sound configuration?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Playback Freezes Screen Randomly While Sound & Keyboard Works

Feb 12, 2010

i'm using ubuntu since 8.04, and the current (9.10) is a fresh install on new hdd.the problem was the same each version (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) - while i'm playing the video (no matter if i use mplayer [smplayer], gstreamer [totem] or adobe flash plugin [videos]) the playback freezes randomly for about 5-10 sec. during the freeze the movie is still played, i can hear the sound is ok. if i press [space] in smplayer it pauses the playback, so the responses for keyboard actions are ok. not for the mouse clicks however. i can still move the cursor around the screen but it seems the system is not aware of it (clicking on the "pause" button doesnt pause the movie). except the cursor, nothing changes on the screen (if the im [pidgin] window was blinking because of new message, it freezes etc etc).

is there any kind of log i could look into just to try figuring out the problem?it is impossible to watch any movie on my pc (currently i don't have tv)i installed windows on external hdd once and it played videos fine so i suppose it's not hardware problem .

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Bizarre E-mu 0404 PCI / ALSA Playback - Sound Files Playing Too Fast?

Nov 17, 2010

I am new to this forum and have recently switched to Ubuntu. The OS installed without a hitch and was able to get video card, wireless internet installed with relative ease. However, I have encountered a problem installing my E-mu 0404 PCI sound card via the ALSA packages in Synaptic.

Code: 04:03.0 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value [1102:0008] As you can see once the packages were installed the OS could see the hardware ok, but when I tried playing a standard MP3 file (16 bit, 44.1khz, 192kbps) in Totem it started playing the file back around 15-20% faster than normal? To me it sounds as if the software is playing the audio back at higher sample rate than 44.1khz hence the faster speed, though I'm not 100% on that.

The next thing I tried was playing the same file back in VLC and it was exactly the same (15-20% too fast), but this time it was horrible and glitchy as well, almost as if the audio buffer size was set to small. The same thing happened when I tried playing back some flac and wav files (all 16 bit, 44.1khz) also. I have searched google (and read the comprehensive sound card guide on this forum) and read several forums, guides, etc. for anybody posting the same issue with this particular card but could find nothing. From all reports I've read this card should work fine under ALSA. For the record I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit kernel running on a Dell Dimension 9200 (Intel Core2Duo E6400 2.13ghz) with 2GB RAM.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Natty NarWhal Netbook Has Destroyed Asus 1215T's Sound

May 4, 2011

My sound worked fine for the first few days.. then I noticed the mic wasn't working in skype so I tried messing with it in sound preferences. Now my speakers explode with this horrible distorted noise(semi-recognizable as whatever I'm trying to play) and sometimes freezes when I try to play any sound. Reinstalling just the drivers to avoid a fresh install, according to the stickied thread at the top, did nothing. Attempting to place the settings back to their defaults also does not appease this bloodthirsty beast.

I've been on a rampage through every lead I've found on trying to fix this problem but nothings worked so far.. it seems the problem is that the onboard speakers (Internal Audio; Analog Surround 4.0 Output) hates it's life in an Ubuntu OS too much to continue living. Not sure if the RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200] output is with it either.

Also heres my.. file report thingy(alsa-info.sh): [URL]

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HD Video Playback - Video And Sound Frequently Get Out Of Sync

Oct 17, 2010

When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).

I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.

Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?

Debian Multimedia :: Audacity Playback / "Error While Opening Sound Device"?

Apr 15, 2010

When I try to playback a sound file in aucadity just after having played one in rhythmbox or totem or vlc (or presumably any other media player), I get the following message :

"Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."

When I try again 2 or 3 seconds later, playback works fine. In fact if I wait 2 or 3 seconds after having stopped playback in rhythmbox or totem before starting playback in audacity, audacity doesn't give me the error message at all. Just wondering what causes this delay (as there are no delays when I go from rhythmbox to totem or vlc or anything else).

Ubuntu :: Karmic Installs Works Fine, But XP Has No Network - No Sound - Poor Graphics

Feb 25, 2010

I've just installed Karmic 9.10 to a new 500GB sata in a friends PC and it boots and runs fine; internet and everything just works. Just reinstalled XP-SP3 to old 80GB pata drive in same PC, it boots ok, but has no sound, poor graphics and network is limited to 1394 - no ethernet.

I built this PC about 3 years ago and it had been running XP with SP2 then SP3 installed, and everything worked fine. So over the past day I have installed XP-SP3 (slipstreamed disc) in it 3 times now, then went back and tried XP-SP2 (earlier slipstreamed disc) twice with same result - no ethernet, poor graphics, no sound?

But it all works fine in Karmic?

I ran Karmic's disk utilities (Palimsest) on the old 80GB and it tested fine, no problems at all.

PC comprises Gigabyte M55plus-S3G m/board, AMD 3800+ 2.4Ghz CPU, 1 GB RAM and a 64MB NVidia graphics card (can't recall model)

Is it possible MS built 'crippleware' in to XP, or could there be a hardware problem that Karmic didn't detect (doubt it)

Karmic is going to be the main OS now, so I don't think the loss of XP is a problem, but friend still wanted to be able to boot XP, even though XP is installed in Virtualbox in Karmic (I did this by importing a previously saved XP 'appliance').
