I'm trying to install Debian 8.2 on my laptop. The "GNU/Linux UEFI Install" screen is fine, but whatever option I choose the screen got stripe like this [URL] .....
I can still use my keyboard, but the screen is unreadable. I was trying install with DVD/Netinst ISO with USBWriter, but it still same. My laptop use ATI 8750M Graphic Card.
Sometimes when I use aptitude to install or update packages I get an SSH screen such as the below that is mostly unreadable:

When it happens it looks like there is a selection of options I cannot read, one of which is highlighted, for which I am expected to choose one of. In the above example "+ee-_c¦--e++" was the highlighted option in the list.
How is this fixed to be made readable every time?
When I invoke aptitude without any arguments the screen is readable and looks just like it should.
The SSH window is displayed by my local Windows XP. The remote OS is Debian 5.
It started many months ago on wheezy. Occationally I got horizontal stripes on my screen when I used my system for many hours switching from one application to an other. Now, after I installed Jessie this problem hasn't gone away, but got worse. Now I don't need to use my system for hours before I encounter this effect. Different parts of my screen get unreadable without any predictable pattern.
Friens of mine argued this might happen because of a broken RAM chip. I bought my Acer Extensa 5220 in 2008. I'm not sure if it's worth to search for new RAM fitting into this old notebook.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my laptop and got a new plug and play device that wasnt being read so I went to go and install windows onto my laptop and when I get to the screen to select my partition it says its unreadable or its not detected but when I restart it it works fine in loading ubuntu.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi just tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 (x86) on my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop (with a Nvidia 8600M GT graphics card) with Wubi. A normal installation try resulted in an unreadable screen after boot (see attachment). I then managed to get the installation going by modifiing the boot options like shown in this HowTo: [URL] After the installation Wubi automatically rebooted the system without any prompt, so that i couldn't install the proper Nvidia drivers (is there a way to prevent wubi from doing that?) like described in the HowTo. After the reboot the graphics were messed up again.
Boot parameters like "text" "single" or vga=xxx didn't work, adding nomodest and nouveau.modset again didn't help either (I think "text" acutally brings up the console, but i just see an unreadable "blacker" screen than normal). Is there an boot option for grub to disable all nvidia related drivers and the graphical login manager and just show a text based console? Or force the gfx driver to be the same as in the installation process (which was perfect...native resolution, no graphical errors until the reboot) (i tried xforcevesa without any luck; nosplash and removing quiet/splash does work - the bootup process is readable, but as soon as the login manager starts its messed up again)
I just downloaded Fedora 10, burned the CD, installed the program, etc. Everything went just fine, but after rebooting the screen turns gibberish, totally unreadable. I now it's the video card, NVIDIA but how do I fix it? I installed Fedora 8 which worked just great, no issues. My machine is Intel Core 2 7300, Geforce 9600GT my other machine, is AMD-64 5000, Geforce 9500 GT, same problem happens when trying to install Centos 5.
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded from Maverick 10.10 to Natty 11.04 and went smoothly even with the new Unity desktop. But when restarted from shutdown, the screen was jumbled and was only just able to restart (the screen jumbled but could just make out the dialog boxes. Then logged in in safe mode. Ever since, have only been able to run in the 'old' Ubuntu without features mode. I have an oldish HP/Compaq nc6000 with 20Gig disk and 675Meg memory. How or what went wrong since it seemed to run fine just after the install.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI Installed Ubuntu x64 10.04 on an Hp HDX 16 with Nvidia 9600m video card. I am having an issue that the screen is very dim and it gives one a headache to read it for long periods of time, especially in a bright room. I can adjust the contrast and brightness from the nvidia control panel but I can never get it just right it will either look washed out or just muddy. Everything was fine in Windows 7 a day or so ago. Is this a backlight issue?
Any suggestions on how to proceed?
I've got a new installation of 11.04 server. Everything was apparently working just fine, and then the system hung. I rebooted, and everything looked good up to the login screen. After I typed my password, the screen started looking good, and then got all fuzzy and messed up (nothing was readable). The only way I could get anything back was to reboot. (I am able to work via ssh at the command line, though). As the graphics were fine before (using GDM), and since the GUI looks fine at the login screen, I know the system can do it.
I tried to find information on what might be going wrong, and haven't been able to find anything that fixes the issues. I thought there might besomething in my config, so I tried logging into another account on the system that doesn't have any user-level configuration, and got the same result (the machine's main purpose is to be a mail and file server). So it appears to me that something is happening to the graphics configuration after login when GDM loads. What I need to change?
Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0. I have a file named juan34. I was sure it was a plain text file so, instead of running first 'file juan34' I directly did 'cat juan34'. The result was everything echoed to the console are the ascii caracters greater than 127 decimal. In other words, the screen is unreadable.
I typed 'exit' but this did not remedy the situation. The login prompt was written with these strange chars. In another console I'm running a program which I estimate will terminate execution in 20 hours or more, so I do not want to reboot the machine.
When I worked in MS-DOS, I had (made) a program that reinitialized the 6845 CRT controller, fixing this problem (for this could also happen under that O.S.). But, if there is a solution for MS-DOS, all the more so there must be one under unix/linux.
I'm using Slackware 13.1.
Whenever I logout of KDE and go back into console mode, the characters at the console screen become unreadable gibberish. Is anyone else having this problem?
I can ctl+alt+F? to work at another console screen, but the ctl+alt+F1 screen remains unreadable until I reboot.
I am from Chinese, when I finished the install of the latest version of debian and use the default browser to access google, I put some Chinese into the google search, the horrible thing is it displayed in unreadable code. I know maybe the default language of debian is not UTF-8, how and where to change it into UTF-8.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have got an Debian Lenny NAS with 7x1,5TB of a Softwareraid5. Kernel Version is 2.6.32. The Raid ist mountet in /media/raid5. The System ist on a seperate disk and work fine. After i tested the performance of the raid with:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/md0 bs=1G count=1 oflag=direct
Since i had done this i cant find any Data on /media/raid5. cat /proc/mdstat and mdadm --detail /dev/md0 looks fine. All UUID's are good. But: The SuperBlock is unreadable and the partition table was not found. mke2fs -n /dev/md0 shows some Backup of the Superblock , but i cant repair it with fsck.ext4: Illegal inode number on /dev/md0.
I'm getting a weird charset problem in a chroot'ed system that I kexec'ed into. It is especially noticeable in ncurses programs like aptitude, but it also noticeable in vim. [URL] My locales are configured to en_US.UTF-8, I have choosen my keyboard layout with kbd-config while in the chroot before kexec'ing into it, I've passed the bootkbd= parameter to the kexec'ed kernel, and my TERM variable is set to "linux". I can't try xterm because this chroot system doesn't has X.
EDIT: I just noticed that the keyboard layout I selected is not working properly. All keys work fine except the ones that are specific to my country. Instead of ç I get a weird symbol.
Our school introduced this OS called UBUNTU. I actually liked it, very much. They gave me an installation disk named Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition. So I asked somebody to install it for me. But there were some problems before he could even completely finish the installation. So I was the one ordered to complete the installation. There were 3 choices on the 3rd or 4th step of the installation process. By hit-and-miss, I choose the second one. The process went on safe and sound. It was alright for me to loose windows 7 loader but not the files and programs inside it. After the installation was done, I then started to explore.
I cant find my old files from windows 7. The whole disk was occupied by Ubuntu. My friend told me that Ubuntu will only occupy about 4G of the Disk only.My disk has a capacity of 250G. So if that's the case, then it should have left a free space of 246G. But when I took a check on my disk's availability, it showed that there is 210G of Memory Left. I was then wondering if that big memory are my old files from windows 7. Another thing is that those files are unreadable. I cant even see those files even if I "show hidden files". Can they still be recovered or not? I choose to reformat my whole drive.
I've tried updating from 8 to 10 using updater and it failed. I'm currently running off a LIVE CD and want to back up my files to do a re-install. My problem is that some of my folders are showing as "unreadable", that I am "not the owner" and I cannot seem to change the permissions for them. I also cannot seem to copy them to back them up. Have I lost these folders? Is there any way to retrieve them?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIm trying to install fedora 10 on the ps3 but i get a blank screen after the media test question, i tested the media in this case the CD and it says it has no errors but when it goes to install it switches to a blank screen and gets stuck. Can anybody help me, or tell me what im doing wrong. Steps that i taken.
1.Download the ppc version of fedora10.
burn the ISO-image using the lowest possible setting.
2. i made a foder in my usb stick called PS3 and inside has another folder called otheros then inside it has the file otheros.bld
3. formatted the ps3 using the xmb. to 10 gigs for the other OS.
4. install Other OS using the usb stick that i made, install successful.
5. switch to other OS, using the XMB through systems settings.
6. Next I see a cd , i click on it with a mouse, see two penguins two options install 32 bit or 64 bit, i choose 64 bit.
7. then i get a media test question , choose skip and loads from CD.
8.Switches to blank screen and nothing else happens.
I'm trying to use the live cd on my HP Pavilion Entertatainment laptop, but I get a blank screen. The Ubuntu logo shows and I get to choose my language, but when I click on "Try Ubuntu without doing anything to your computer" (paraphrased) the screen goes blank. About a minute later I hear the Ubuntu music.

In recovery mode I can log as root in console, though.I run Debian 6, 64 bits. I have an intel q6600 and a nvidia geforce 9800GX2.

I'm installing Linux Mint on my old machine now and it's installing good, but I try to install Fedora 10 and I've been having problems. It works fine in VMware, but when I try to load it from a live CD to install into the drive, on the initizialize process it say's "failed ata something something", then it goes to a bar and then it goes to a black screen and it hangs there. I did 5 md5check sums on the same iso, I'm not sure what's going on?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a emachines et1331g-03w I am trying to install Ubuntu on. I have tried both 8.04 32-bit and 9.10 32-bit desktop versions. They both just go to a black screen and hang when you try to run from the cd or install. I have not tried the 64-bit version yet.
View 7 Replies View Relatedi wasn't sure where to post this, so if there's a better place, someone please more this thread. i just installed 10.04 64-bit desktop on a ~4 year old hp a1610n (pic below). it works great for about 20 seconds at which point the screen becomes distorted and unresponsive. i'm not entirely sure, but i think the problem didn't start until after i activated the (recommended) nvidia driver. its hard to say though since i set up that driver very soon after the install. here's a pic of the desktop: click me

I am reinstalling ubuntu mavericks as I could not get the first install to work right. I installed from a CD that I burned. 3/4 of the way through the "installing system" process the screen went dead. The cursor does not respond nor does anything happen with the keyboard. Be aware that I don't know very many things about what a keyboard can do. The screen has been frozen for about a half hour now.

I booted it up and get to the ubuntu install menu, were my first choice is "English" as language. Then I get to an installation menu were I proceed to "Install Ubuntu Server", but when doing so the screen just go blank and nothing happens. I've searched around for a solution but can't seem to find one.(Note: I've installed Ubuntu Server on other computers without facing this issue, so I don't know what went wrong this time.)

as instructed to in the sticky. On rebooting, after the load animation, the screen goes blank/black. If I click around, I can hear some beeps from the OS so I assume that things are running but i just can't see anything.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a Live CD. I can get to the Menu where I get to choose "Try without installing","Install Ubuntu","Test Disk," etc.After hitting ANY of the options, it hangs on a black screen, sometimes with a cursor blinking in the upper left, sometimes not. From all the research I've been able to dig up it seems it's a graphics card issue, but I haven't been able to find anything exactly like my problem as most everything I've been able to find say's theirs continues to install but then causes problems later, or they're trying to load on a dual boot system. I can't seem to get past that first "Install Ubuntu" selection. As soon as I hit enter it goes black.
I'm wondering if I can't load the nvidia drivers from a command line before I attempt to install from the live CD, but I don't know how to do that. I have the .run file downloaded but don't know where to go from there.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded to 9.10 and found that the menus in Open Office are unintelligible gray blocks.
Many apps are fine, like Firefox, gimp and thunderbird, but OO is scrogged up. I also noticed that Quanta has unintelligible sub menus although the top level menus are readable. The lists of files in Quanta are gray blocks, but if you click on a folder, the file names appear, then chaneg back to gray blocks if you click the folder again. Tried reinstalling Quanta but no success.
I recently upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze. My graphic card is nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400M GT] (rev a1). Using lenny latest drivers from nvidia worked fine. I installed nvidia drivers using Debian packages 195.36.31-6 and latest driver from nvidia site (260.19.36) and also other nvidia drivers. The problem is when I start gdm3 I saw nvidia logo but then when it loads gdm3 it shows gdm3 screen with lot of black pixels and other random pixels and then the screen freezes. And the only thing I can do is restart using [alt]+[sysrq]+b.
