I installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my laptop and got a new plug and play device that wasnt being read so I went to go and install windows onto my laptop and when I get to the screen to select my partition it says its unreadable or its not detected but when I restart it it works fine in loading ubuntu.
View 2 RepliesI was attempting dual boot my computer (ubuntu 11.04 and windows 7) and when I got to the stage to allocate drive space I accidentally formatted the largest partition of my hard drive to a linux swap. My computer froze while it was formatting the drive and I was forced to power off my laptop. Windows was my original operating system and was installed on the partition that is now formatted (or maybe not because of the crash during the formatting) as a linux swap. Therefore my windows no longer works and I cannot restore my computer for a backup because it wont let me restore it to the partition that is now a linux swap. Now when I boot from the linux install cd I get an error and am not able to install ubuntu or format/allocate drive space. Is there a way I can reformat and fix my harddrive so I can them restore windows.

Everytime I connect, it shows the memory occupied and the remaining memory(190GB)..but when i try to access the folders inside they read empty... nothing is seen in the folders.. I am unable to read any data from it or write to it... Same is the case with Windows When I run self-test in Linux ubuntu I get

After lot's of research i still can't find any solution to my problem, that's why i'm posting a message here.So, it's been few days now that i'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10, with the live CD, but each time when i must choose where to install it or how to make partition, it just tell me there is no hard drive..(i have two 1 TB sata hard drive )So i tried many things, GParted doesn't find my hard drive either, they appear in the bios (i can run windows), try to uninstall a raid program that might hide the hard drive, but it didn't work either.
So i came to see that i had Marvell 9123 which seems to be a SATA controller, and few people seems to have some similar issue with that Marvell stuff..I'm quite desperate now.. i tried to install ubuntu on a USB drive but my computer just doesn't boot on it (i tried this method for the sb drive URL...
I had a set of rather unusual problems on installing a new 500Gb hard drive on my F14 system, I've solved them, but they were that unusual that I thought I should share them in case anyone else gets the same thing! I'd been experiencing intermittent faults on one of my drives, (lock ups for no reason, occasional boot ups that failed due to ' disk unreadable errors' and other odd errors). I assumed that the drive was failing, but it always showed 'Heathy' on disk utility! This was the disk with the OS on, plus my main 'data' disk had some bad sectors, so I thought I'd buy a nice big 500Gb and reinstall the whole system.
I backed up all my data to an external 'USB' drive, opened the case, (a big old under the table 'desktop', why do they still call them 'desktops'?) shoved in the new SATA drive and rebooted, intending to format the new drive to EXT4 and partitioning it before installing F14 again! OOOOOOOOOW! Major drive failure, missing OS, whole list of SDB errors! Control D, to reboot, BIOS only sees one drive; SDA (I have three, two IDE and one SATA) plus the one I just put in makes four. I go into BIOS and discover that it not only cant see any of the other drives, but my two DVD drives are missing too!
Now I've been building my own systems and mucking about with computers since before you could buy them, and Ive never seen a problem like this one! At first I thought the new drive had screwed my system, for on removal, the problem persisted! Then I noticed that the IDE connector in drive SDB, (the long 40 pin job) was just slightly out of line with the back of the drive, pushed it firmly in and what do you know, everything works! We moved recently and I think the vibration was enough to loosen the connector to give intermittent faults, and pulling the cables about to get the new drive in, pulled it out further......
I have been running Ubuntu 9.04 for the past year. Tonight decided to upgrade to 9.10 thru update manager. Every thing regarding the install seemed fine until the request to restart the computer. I hit the restart and it will not boot up. Computer goes thru the normal restart screens.
Screen flashes with bios info--no hard drive detected, then proceeds to show booting from hd, then loads grub stage 1.5 (not grub 2)and screen goes blank.
When I inset my External Hard drive into my laptop it shows 27.3 gb occupied but doesn't show all the files. Also , this is happening only now.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
I wrote a part of a bootable image to the hard drive with the dd command and now i can't finish installing a linux without getting a grub fatal error.how can i restore my hard drive?

I am running Fedora 14 on a usb drive connected to my laptop via an e-sata connection. I have approx. 165 gig of space on the drive at present and I would like to dual-boot with Suse 11.3. I have set-up my bios to boot via my usb hard drive. If possible I would like to show my available o/s when I boot my fedora setup. I am probably not explaining this very well but basically I want to be able to run the 2 linux o/s from my usb drive.

I'm about to reformat the middle primary partition and would like to take this opportunity of trying Ubuntu using the middle primary partition.
I'm using GAG to switch from one partition to another.
Is there any reason why trying Ubuntu in the middle partition would cause problems.
I think I read that Ubuntu can mess up the MBR.
I have Fedora 14 installed on my usb drive, works perfectly. What I would like to do is:- install Open Suse on the same drive, sharing the same swap, boot section but splitting or resizing the home partition, can this be done? I installed Fedora by booting up from a disc, plugging in my usb hard drive and then installing to that. Would I follow the same procedure for my 2nd installation, I think so but am open to correction. My laptop bios supports booting from disc and I have some 204 gig of free home space.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Compaq 6710b notebook with W7 on it. I want to use Ubuntu for hobby activities, but as this is a company notebook, W7 should remain intact. I decided to install Ubuntu to an external drive.I set BIOS boot order to CD-USB-HDD.I attached a 2.5" 250GB WD Passport usb hard disk and installed Ubuntu to it from the CD.As a result, the clean install doesn't boot, I get a mere grub console (normal, not rescue).
Examining the situation I learned, that during Live CD session the inner hdd is hd0 and usb drive is hd1. Grub.cfg gets compiled to use /dev/sdb.When booting from usb drive, BIOS makes it to be hd0 and inner hdd becomes hd1 so grub tries to load kernel from W7 partition (and can't find it, I wonder why? )How to fix problem? Although grub.cfg is supposed not to be edited, may I change every sdb to sda in it?
I tried doing a search and couldn't find anything relatively recent on the topic so here is my question.
I am fairly new to the linux world and am in the process of trying out a couple different distributions. I am doing this by installing them to an external hard drive. This allows me to test them out without affecting my main system in any way. I have already tried openSUSE and it installed with no problems. I am trying to install Ubuntu, however when the installation tries to install GRUB2 it fails asking me for a different location to install it to.
When installing I unhook all drives from the computer except for the dvd drive, usb drive I'm installing from, and the external hard drive I am trying to install Ubuntu to. I'm not sure what else may be of use.
I have got a hold of a extra hdd along with a hdd enclosure. I have tried looking for information on how to install linux on to one but haven't been completely successful on my search. So I turn to all of you. I was also wondering if its possible to have it were I can use it on multiple computers so I can use it for computer repair.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have 1tb Seagate Freeagent NTFS External HD. I have Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 with dual boot as Ubuntu. I'm primarily a windows user, since i'm not that well acquainted with linux. External Hard Drive does not detect- when i connect it..it just gives a whirring sound and the "My Computer" window hangs. Figured out the cause- and temporary solution- The drive should do principle mount automatically. It won't if the file system is not "clean". That is possible if the drive was connected while you hibernated Windows, or if you did not properly disconnect the drive.
I booted with ubuntu and did the following-
sudo fdisk -l
and got the following:
Disk /dev/sdb: 1000.2 GB, 1000204884992 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders

Now the browser window for the freeagent hard drive pops up and I can access everything. I try to shutdown the computer but it won't as long as the hard disk is connected. So I have to pull the usb out. And the problem remains the same. I want the hard disk to be detected normally on my windows/linux (like normal usbs work-plug it in and it works). Also have no clue how to work a temporary solution like this with windows yet. I have boot with ubuntu everytime and repeat these steps when I want to access it.

I've always used to connect it to my Ubuntu Server with the following command: sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 ..and it's worked fine, but after a reboot I did a couple of times ago, the hard drive no longer appears.sudo fdisk -l doesn't show the hard drive anymore. Connecting it to a Windows computer works, I even tried the "safely remove harddrive" function, but to no avail.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just had a fresh install of Fedora 13 x86_64 on my notebook after using fedora 13 x32 for a while.I am using KDE Desktop.Everything seemed to be working fine out of the box except for minor problems with sound and plugins.The biggest issue is that Fedora does not recognize when I plug an external USB HDD (WD 320 GB for this matter).The USB light on the HDD does not go on, and nothing is auto mounted.It seems that USB does not work at all - I have tried to plug another USB device and it didn't seem to have power.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Seagate Freeagent Go 500GB external hard drive that I use for backup. I wanted to resize the partition so I used GParted to shrink the 500GB NTFS partition to 400GB. The other 100 I wanted to encrypt and use for some other more important files. For some reason, the shrink failed and I disconnected the hard drive and reconnected it. I didn't see the icon appear on the desktop. I went into the Disk Utility to discover that GParted's shrink error deleted all of the partitions on my hard drive. So I created a new 400GB NTFS partition and put back all of my files. The other 100 is unallocated currently.
It will normally mount automatically and show up on the desktop but the hard drive won't mount without me going into the Disk Utility and mounting it through there. I can't even mount it from the Terminal with root privileges. It gives me this:

mount: can't find /media/My Data in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
Now, I can unmount with root privileges and I can unmount it from the Disk Utility. I can browse and edit the files within. But I can't unmount it from within Nautilus or on the desktop (the Safely Remove Drive option is not there).
The new 400GB partition also isn't detected by GParted. It just shows the whole drive as unallocated.
I just did a new upgrade to Maverik, however I accidentally messed up my second hard drive in the process. I have read up on data recovery stuff and there are tons of tool... but I need to know what happened, then I can worry about the fixing. Ok, Standard P4 PC with two HDDs.
1 X 120GB for / & /Home
1 X 350GB for /Data
During the install I told the setup my second HDD is /Home (who knows why?? -stupid I know) and that its EXT4. (no format) Now I have a lovely clean HDD with /home. What happened here now??... There were no partition changes made, I did not format the drive.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

When I try to install from the install menu, the system cycles through the dots under the Ubuntu title for several minutes. I also get the same response when I try to check the disk. The system is an HP a1020n system.
