Debian Installation :: Sparc On A Sun Blade 2500 Workstation - Does Not Boot
Feb 7, 2011
I am an intermediate linux user. However, I know nothing about solaris. I am trying to install Debian Sparc on a sun blade 2500 workstation. I was told it should work. I am able to go through the debian installation process but when the box reboots it does not boot into Debian. I have now gone through the debian install process several times and now it saids there are too many primary partitions. I tried a rescue install but it saids there are no partitions installed on disk? What am I doing wrong? I am curious if I need to pass a specific argument at the command line to boot into silo? I cannot find any relevant guidance online about this problem and I cannot believe I am the only one to stumble here.

When trying to install Debian 6.02 from a boot cd, the boot halts with the error message Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. In looking for a solution I see a great deal about this problem occurring after messy upgrades and the like, but when when booting from a cd downloaded right from the debian website.

I've got 10.04 installed on my Blade 1000 workstation. Installed 6.06 first and worked my way up as per other postings. See attached cookbooks I wrote. Framebuffer is Elite3D-lite, and I have done the afbinit install. Using Xorg w/ Gnome and other windowing software to eliminate the possibility it is Gnome. From what I understand, Ubuntu does not require a custom X11 conf file like OpenBSD.
Current screen output shows large vertical stripes, where the stripes overlay on top of the GNOME desktop. Inside the stripes are the prior boot screen output of Ubuntu 10.04. When the screen saver kicks in, the Gnome desktop disappears, but the blue 10.04 stays visible. Mouse cursor moves across the screen, under each stripe as it goes.
My knowledge of framebuffers is limited. Would this then imply that the framebuffer is not fully "refreshing"? The screen does not provide full width even though the correct OpenBoot monitor configuration is set. Haven't found any mention of this issue from other Ubuntu/Linuxes Sparc users. Attached the X11 log. Looking at the log, I suspect this will need a custom X11 config file.

I JUST registered here as I have not used Linux in several months. Linux and I have been and off and on relationship, but after I realized Ubuntus limitations Ive pretty much only dealt only with Debian (on PPC as well as x86, and also some Suse on x86).
Anyway, so I just picked up a couple Sun Ultra 5s for free. One had 256MB RAM (4 x 64MB), a 4.3GB IDE HD (no SCSI in the Ultra 5), and booted fine in Solaris up to the login screen at which point it wasnt really any use to me since I dont know the login name or password, and really want to run Linux anyway. The other I am told needed a firmware (chip?) and basically didnt do much more than power on. However, it had a 40GB HD and 2 x 128MB RAM modules. So, I replaced the 4.3GB drive with the 40GB, and replaced 2 of the 64MB RAM modules with 2 128MB modules, for a total of 384MB RAM.
BTW, both machines have the 270MHz Ultra1 CPU. Anyway, I used my main Windows x86 machine (which Im on now), downloaded the Debian SPARC net install, and burned it to a CD. Put the CD in the Ultra 5, installation proceeded nicely, though with one disconcerting message stating the urgency of which a reboot was required (though still telling me to wait for installation to finish). I mean, the whole installation process basically went perfectly except that one odd message.
So, when install is complete, I choose finish installation, the machine reboots, ejects the CD, and then ultimately get a message saying "cant open boot device". I am very new to Sun hardware, and am by no means an expert to Linux. The only thing Ive really tried so far is to type "boot hda" which only causes the same message to appear.
From previous experience, I have written on paper the info for all of my partitions. So I think my Debian install is sitting there waiting to be utilized, but the Sun hardware is oblivious to the fact that theres a perfectly good OS on the machine yearning to be booted.

I have an hp z420 workstation. I bought 8x4Gb of 1600MhZ, ECC unbuffered memory.
Something weird happens now: I tested each individual RAM module by booting my machine with only that module inserted. They are all fine.
However, when I insert all of them, my machine does not boot (and the fan goes crazy).. In particular, the problem happens when I insert any RAM module into a specific slot.
Right now I am using my machine with 7x4Gb of ram, and it is fine. Does it mean I have a hardware problem with one of the sockets?

I just received a new workstation from a vendor with Fedora14 supposedly installed in it. The problem is, it does not boot up properly. Although I've contacted them to resolve the problem, I thought I'd ask here to see if I can expedite things. Bottom line, the machine goes through the boot-up process, but only so far. Rather than getting to the log-in screen, I only see a white bar at the bottom of the screen, with "Fedora14" adjacent to it. Is there a way that I can get into the set of configuration menus for setting up the OS? They neglected to include the source disks with the system, if that is what is required.

So the other day I installed Debian Wheezy on my Sun Blade 150. While the OS is installed fine, all the webkit based browsers continuously crash after a few pages. So, I tried to download IceWeasel since it wasn't installed when I tried installing Debain off the DVD. The only problem is, it won't install as the Xulrunner version it requests is xulrunner-24.0_24.5.0esr-1~deb7u1_sparc, however the only version available on the repositories is newer. Is there any way to get the older xulrunner version, or is there going to be a fix for IceWeasel soon on Sparc?

So this also happened to me when trying to install an old version of Ubuntu (hardy I believe). I have a Sun Netra X1 that I am trying to install the latest stable Debian Sparc64 port on. I'm doing a TFTP boot, and am able to get the kernel to load. However, once the kernel loads the installer, the screen gets garbled (attached is a screenshot from my console session) This server has no graphics card, so I have to install using the serial console. I don't recall having this issue when I installed the last stable version. Any ideas what's going on or how to fix it? I even passed the option "DEBIAN_FRONTEND=text" to the kernel, but it didn't seem to do anything.

Got kernel panic when upgradeing from 9.04 to 9.10... Have a tough time with this sparc server. On newer disto it doesnt regognize the cdrom in installation what will result in no install. I tried all trix I found on internet about this issue but none of them did it for me. So I went back in versions. When I come to 7.10 gutsy everything seems to work, so now everything is up and running.
But now I want it back on version 9.04. Last time (a year ago) I did the same thing, and just do-release-update to current version. Now that doesnt work. Maybe becourse I need some updates to gutsy, and the gutsy repositorys is not available anywere. how I can pass this upgrade to 8.04? I set the APT::Get::AllowUnauthenticated true; to pass this far...

The output should look like:

sample_2.txt :
1610:declare var testing
sample_7.txt :
1610:declare var testing

Is it possible to use grep for this task?

I have a HP Workstation Z600 with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 as graphic card. I have installed a ubuntu 32 bits 9.10, then upgraded to 10.04 and 10.10. Grub shows me 2 installed kernel : 2.6.31-22 and 2.6.35-22. When I boot with kernel 2.6.35, the startup hangs. I can just reboot the computer. When I boot with 2.6.31, ubuntu starts up, but the screen is not recognized, and I can just run in 800x600. I tried to install the nvidia driver which is provided with the distribution, but no luck (there is an error message).
So I tried to install the official NVIDIA driver, but it asks me to install linux source. This one is available for kernel 2.6.35 but not anymore for 2.6.31.Does someone has an idea of all my problems, and if possible, how to solve them ?

I'm unable to boot the LFS-6.6 which i've built on a vmware workstation 6.5. i had no trouble in installing all the packages and have managed to run all the test suites successfully w.r.t stable LFS-6.6. while booting i get 'kernel panic' and it says unknown device /dev/sda1 and unknow block (0,0). i've only one primary partition without any swap partition. i've a label assigned to /dev/sda1 and have included it in my fstab file. device.map shows 2 entries:
One for the floppy and the other for my harddisk which is- hd0 /dev/sda. this is for the 2nd time i'm stuck at a point after perfectly installing all the stuff as mentioned in the LFS-6.6 book. i've also noticed on this website the many users have similar type of issue. it would be great if somebody could help me.
note: while configuring the linux, i've inbuilt everything required for my system, including support for ramfs and other required filesystems, scsi driver etc.
My host machine is on a intel core 2 duo processor. my virtual scsi hard disk is 3 GB in size and is a ext3 fs. scsi is configured with LSI Logic which is recommended by vmware while adding an hard-disk.

I got a new Lenovo S20 and I am having trouble loading Linux. I've loaded these variants with no success:
Ubuntu desktop
Ubuntu server
Linux Mint
CentOS
vmWare esxi
The live CD's run, and very nicely at that. But once I install to the workstation they won't boot. I just get a blank screen. I've tried different bootloaders.. I've toyed with different BIOS settings.. I've even installed to different drives (a hard disk and an SSD). Maybe a hint: BSD installs and runs with no problem at all. I have PC-BSD running at the moment. It's nice, maybe I'll keep it. But I'd rather have Linux.
My amateur computer science mind sees this as not a boot loader issue (recovery mode shows Linux seems to be loading to a point.. but I can't see the script line just before the lockup) not graphics related; UB Server and vmWare are text-only and they won't load either probably not a bios issue (liveCDs run and other people run Linux on S20s) not hardware (Windows and BSD run on this one)

I keep installing Debian Workstation Player on Debian, but it just doesn't open. I think it might have something to do with the VMware kernel modules not being built or something. How can I start troubleshooting this? Also, why isn't VMware packaged? Has no one tried packaging it yet, or is there a more complex reason?

I created a vmware workstation Debian 7 virtual machine from a debian-7.7.0-amd64-CD-1.iso.
I can play flash video streams from within the browser, i.e. YouTube plays fine. However, if I download a YouTube video, then try to play the flv file, it will not play from a media player.
I either get an "error cannot decode" or just a green screen during playback when using Totem or VLC. I've tried installing about every package out there, yet flv files will not play in any media players.
I also tried running the VM with and without 3d support. It won't play flv's either way.
Is this an issue between a vmware vm and Debian 7? Any success story playing flv files from within a Debian vmware virtual machine?

A few years back, Ubuntu announced a "partnership" with Sun Microsystems, and explicitly listed the Ultra 40 Workstation is compatible with the then current version of Ubuntu. I installed that version (8.04) on my Ultra 40 M2 workstations, and everything worked very well. I later upgraded them to 8.10 and then 9.04, with good results.
Well, now I'm trying to jump to 10.04, and I'm having no luck.
A fresh install seems to hang at GRUB (as near as I can tell.) I get a quarter screen of magenta (the top 1/4 of the screen turns magenta) and then ... nothing. Hang. I've tried re-installing with the full graphical install, and got this hang from the Live CD. Using the "alternate install" CD in text mode, everything seemed to install fine, but the first reboot hangs immediately.
Suspecting GRUB 2, I moved to another machine and decided to try an in place upgrade rather than a fresh install. I figured that the upgrade would retain Grub 1, and I'd have a better chance.
So far, "better" is a good word. Only a little better, though, unfortunately. The upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 seemed to work OK, but upon reboot, I got a message telling me that it was waiting for the partitions to mount. <ESC> gets you to a recovery console, which is great. I can mount all the partitions by hand, and they seem to mount, sort of. "df" doesn't see them, but you can access all files on all partitions, so they really are mounted. When you exit the recovery console, however, you go back to waiting for them to mount.
Have the changes to Ubuntu left the Sun Workstations behind? Do I need to switch to another distro, or put Solaris 10 back on these things? Or are we going to be stuck on Ubuntu 9.04 in our "Advanced Unix Lab?"
