Debian :: Testing Rpc.statd Broken In Last Update Cycle?

Apr 8, 2011

I rely on NFS shares to mount home directories and the shared apt cache on my home workstations. Since the last update, rpc.statd has broken and the service fails to run at boot. When init encounters nfs-common, the system shows: Starting NFS common utilities: statd failed!

and then it hangs on trying to mount /var/cache/apt

if anybody who uses testing has any clue as to whether there is a fix coming from the upstream, or if there is a config fix for it.

Debian Configuration :: Blueman Broken In Testing (Squeeze)

For anyone using Blueman with Testing (Squeeze), todays Python upgrade to version 2.6 stops it from working due to a Blueman bug. This has been fixed in blueman version 1.21-4, which you can install from SID if you don't want to wait the 10 days for the normal migration.

Debian :: Fresh Testing Install: Display 'broken' After KDE Login

Feb 1, 2011

I have downloaded the latest testing image today (debian-testing-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso), install went just fine.

On boot, I get as far as the KDE login screen, where my user and password are seemingly accepted. Seemingly, as after this point, the screen is a complete mess. This 'mess' differs between attempts: it could be full of black and white squares, themselves made up of noise pixels; once it was like a normal screen after it had been through a blender, i.e. bits of the DE but awfully mixed up. (My judgement would be that the video pointers is set to point at the wrong part of memory... or is that my old-school point of view getting in the way? Whichever, it provides you with an idea of what it looks like.)

Running on an Nvidia GTS250 card, with two monitors (2 x DVI).

I have not installed any NV propriety drivers, as this is the first boot(s).

There is no xorg.conf present on the system; and I cannot find anything obvious in xorg.log (but then, I wouldn't know what to look for).

I use grub legacy, from my existing PCLOS partition (though this should not be an issue as I get as far as the KDE login screen, pretty as please).

Regarding the install itself, I took the above mentioned testing image as a way to get Squeeze. I assume this was the right way to do this at current time.

Debian Multimedia :: Install Gnome On Testing - Broken Packages

Sep 12, 2015

I'm on Debian testing and every time I try to install Gnome I get this:

Code: Select all# alexandernst at stupidbox in ~ [18:51:07]
$ LC_ALL=C sudo tasksel install gnome-desktop --new-install
tasksel: apt-get failed (100)

I tried installing it manually:

Code: Select all# alexandernst at stupidbox in ~ [18:51:35]
$ LC_ALL=C sudo apt-get install gnome
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

Is this a problem in Debian repos (held packages) or I'm actually doing something wrong?

Debian :: Sound Ceased After Last Update In Testing

Feb 21, 2016

After the last update in testing, (02/21/16), my sound stopped, (it did have an unfixed issue with the jacks and muting, things would be muted on reboot, until I plugged in something, then removed the plug from the front jack), I have never had a sound issue, so I am a lot lost here...

Here is what I know... If I use speaker-test as root, I hear sound... If I use speaker-test as my normal user account, (non root), I see no errors in the term window, but hear no sound... To me this says permissions issue, but I am a member of audio.

Debian Configuration :: Statd Takes Too Long At The Boot Time

Mar 25, 2010

Since recently statd at the boot time takes, more then 30s or even more.

It is laptop configuration, no NFS server(?) lenny with few installs from backports (open office and .30 kernel - for Intel 5300) vmwware (7), as well firestarter firewall

Can I disable it or change the boot order (via sysv-rc-conf ), so I can speed up my boot time?

Debian Installation :: Update From Squeeze To Testing Suggests Lot's Of Removing?

Apr 22, 2011

When updating from the last Debian Live image (Squeeze) to the current Debian testing, apt announces a lot of packages being not required:

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
openoffice.org-draw libpcsclite1 libwpd8c2a usb-modeswitch gtk2-engines-smooth dnsmasq-base tomboy
libmono-security2.0-cil libgsf-1-common update-notifier-common libndesk-dbus1.0-cil libmtp8 libmono-addins-gui0.2-cil
gnome-js-common pnm2ppa libavutil49 libhal-storage1 libmono-system2.0-cil update-notifier python-mako
openoffice.org-officebean openoffice.org-emailmerge network-manager-gnome openoffice.org-impress gdebi libgpod-common

[Code]...

These include some important packages, like network-manager-gnome for example. Was it really intended to be removed? Without it, it's impossible to manage network connections from Gnome (only manual option of editing interfaces config is left). Is it a bug, or some incomplete intention? apt suggests to autoremove these packages. Should they all be retained, or only some of them, or it's supposed to be none? Removing some of them makes sense for me (like Epiphany for example), but some not at all.

Debian Multimedia :: Sid - Gnome Broken After Update / Fix It?

Sep 10, 2011

Just did a recent update with Sid, and upon reboot, I noticed that the theming engine appears to be out of whack a little. I've provided a screen shot for some clarity. As you can see, some programs that open do not use the set GTK theme, but instead reverts back to default. I've also noticed that in appearances, I now get that message that says pixmap engine is required, even though I have it installed. The biggest update was to gnome 3.0.2. At the moment, it doesn't affect usability at all, and I'm hesitant to undo the updates, as things that didn't work before now works! Ahh Sid! Living life on the dangerous side I is! If anyone can provide some insight into this issue (a fix is not of high priority),

Debian Configuration :: Nouveau-driver Broken After Update

Jan 4, 2016

Yesterday I installed some updates on my Jessie system (I don't remember if the kernel was also updated). After rebooting the system nothing happens after the "Loading intial ramdisk"-message. If I boot in recovery mode the boot stops at the message:

Code: Select allfb: switching to nouveaufb from simple

If I add "nouveau.modeset=0" temporary to the GRUB-entry for the recovery mode, it will boot up in the console-mode.

I was able to get an ethernet connection with "dhclient eth0" and removed the "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" package. Then I installed it and the removed gnome-desktop again. Before removing it, aptitude said the following to the package:

Code: Select alli A xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Now it only says:

Code: Select alli   xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

But this didn't change my problem. I found a similar case in the internet, but there were no solutions for it: [URL] ....

The next thing I would do, is to install the proprietary nvidia-drivers, but since I have a GTX 960 video card, I would have to use experimental drivers. So I'm afraid to make it more worse trying to install this drivers.

Also I'm not sure if it really is a driver-specific of kernel-specific problem. My kernel is version 3.16.0-4-amd64.

Debian Multimedia :: X Broken After Update - Screen Remains Black

Dec 20, 2010

So I'm pretty awful at keeping Debian up to date, I guess. I'm using cron-apt to fetch updates every night, then apply them whenever I get around to it. Well, I neglected that last part for a month or two, and after some routine downtime to clear the case of dust, I decided it was time to upgrade. So I ran the command, everything checked out fine, and I was on my merry way. Until a half-hour ago when I accidentally shutdown the computer (I use the same zsh prompt on each computer, so I got them confused.) I turned it back on, only to be greeted with a black screen after all the services started up.

Everything works: ircd, MPD, etc. EXCEPT, of course, X. At first I thought the update broke SLIM, but after checking htop and doing a killall slim, it doesn't appear to be running (the screen remains black.) I hit Control-Alt-f2 to get to get back to a terminal, then tried doing startx, which freezes the computer entirely. All the network services stop, I can't SSH in, etc. It's dead. If I'm not mistaken, Xorg.0.log should say something, but I'm not a huge expert on it. The last line isn't an error, I can tell you that. So what's the deal here? apt-get remove xorg and start over?

- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?

Networking :: Debian Testing (Wheezy) Update REALLY Broke Networking

May 8, 2011

The update that broke things contained some 400 packages. The problem is NOT hardware related. There are 2 other linux installs on the laptop that work the way they should. This is all related to using a wired network connection. The update removed the package network-config and did not replace it. Not sure that is the problem because that package is related to the gui and I can not get an ip in cli.

I am stuck at cli because the new kernel broke nvidia (pretty normal). There was also a new xserver, which tends to break nvidia, and as I recall a new kde. Anyway I am unable to rebuild the nvidia driver because I can not establish a network connection to my network to get the packages needed to fix it.

Debian Configuration :: Reboot Cycle Running 64bit Squeeze On Intel T3200 Dualcore

Mar 13, 2011

running Debian Squeeze (standard 32bit squeeze Kernels linux-image-2.6.32-5-486 and linux-image-2.6.32-5-686) happily without trouble on a 64bit capable Samsung laptop featuring an Intel T3200 Dualcore processor. However, when I try to boot using the squeeze 64bit kernel (linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64) the system proceeds through a few text lines immediately after Grub, and then performs a warm start.

The text output I get immediately after Grub look similar to the ones I get booting the 486 and 686 kernels, without any indication for the reboot behavior. The rebooting also seems to happen before any entry is written into the boot/system log files (logging is enabled). This behavior also occured when I first tried to prime the machine from the Debian squeeze install CD using the amd64 kernel. I'm generally happy with the 32bit kernels, but I'd like to use the amd64 support to do some Java compatibility testing for 64bit architectures.

The Laptop is a Samsung R510-Aura T3200 Delfina with the following Hardware and Setup (using Grub as boot loader):

- Intel Pentium Dual CPU T3200 @ 2.00GHz (see http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37160 for details)
- NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
- 3GB RAM + 1GB reserved for GeForce
- Konfiguration Details:
-- Phoenix Bios

[Code]....

Maybe a strange BIOS-Setting that works with the 32bit kernels but not with the 64bit kernel? I've seen a post on here that indicates someone is running the amd64 kernel on a T3200 successfully, and the chip is definitely 64bit capable, so the reboot behavior is a complete mystery for me

Networking :: Rpc.statd Is Not Running

Apr 1, 2011

I ran a large system update yesterday, and after a system reboot (for a new kernel), my nfs shares refused to mount. I keep getting error messages stating that statd isn't running.Attempting to restart the nfs-common or nfs-kernel-server services results in the same error message.I tried starting it manually using rpc.statd, and even though I get no errors from it, it doesn't appear to actually launch it.

I've been looking around the web, but I haven't been able to find anything useful, or even understandable to me. Most of what I find are old bugs or dead-end threads. I managed to get my shares to mount by adding the nolock option to the mount commands, but I'm not completely sure what that really does or whether it's safe or not to do so.

Red Hat :: Rhel 4.5 - Ntpd And Rpc.statd Don't Start On Boot

I have a problem with a server with os Linux RedHat Enterprise AS 4.7:

when the server boots both ntpd and rpc.statd fail to start.

looking into /var/log/messages I found:

and

For ntp, when the server completed the boot process, altough it seems ntpd started, no external server is used for syncronization. The rpc.statd does not start at all and it doesn't appear if I issue a rpcinfo -p
The strange thing is that at this point if I manually start or restart /etc/init.d/ntpd and /etc/init.d/nfslock both services start with no errors. Another strange thing is the timestamp for messages into /var/log/messages. How could it be possible to have a line with a certain timestamp and the following with a timestamp 30 seconds before?

The kernel version in use is 2.6.9-55.0.12.ELsmp #1 SMP x86_64
