View 3 RepliesI installed Debian Squeeze-testing weekly build today, with CD1 alone. It took 1 Hour 38 minutes to install and configure on my Pentium 4 2.7 Ghz , 1GB ram HP machine. I have some trouble with the installation. Sometimes the desktop just freezes while moving Icons, or opening Xterm. I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, OR Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys. I have to physically reboot. Why doesn't Ctrl-Alt-Backspace work on GNOME? Is there a IRC chat for Debian Help and what applications does one use on GNOME for IRC chat?

I just found new mesa-dri drivers in the updates-testing repo, installed all of them, uninstalled kmod-nvidia, and it just worked with my geforce 9500GT. For me, this is a huge step forward, the only thing still giving problems is the DVI signal, so I'm stuck in VGA. Even then, I was able to get a better resolution with the DVI signal using this testing drivers than with the nvidia ones (I tried several links suggested by DBelton in the nvidia-installation thread for fixing the DVI issue, to no avail).

He has asked me to send him a weekly report of this work. View 1 Replies View Relatedthis is at the root of the problems I'm about to describe: Whenever I try to upgrade my Debian installation, I have repeated "size mismatch" errors that necessitate restarting the upgrade process. Since I'm using Debian Squeeze there are lots of upgrades to be done every week. Today, for instance, because I've not upgraded for a few weeks I have to download over 300MB of files to complete the upgrade. However, because of the size mismatch problem this download may well turn into something between 1GB and 2GB, as I repeatedly have to re-download files that were successfully downloaded in the last failed upgrade. What with my ISP limiting me to 7GB per month, I'm finding that merely keeping Debian up to date is using up most of my allotted bandwidth.
I've tried setting the Aptitude preferences not to "remove unused packages automatically", and not to "remove obsolete package files after downloading package lists", but for some reason I still find that files I downloaded in the last failed upgrade have to be downloaded again (and again, ...) whether anyone either knows how to avoid the package size mismatch problem (I can't change my ISP, which has a monopoly on providing internet to my area), or alternatively knows how to set Aptitude not to forget the packages it has downloaded successfully during each failed upgrade, thereby allowing me to avoid such a huge bandwidth usage on my frequent upgrades.
is anyone else experiencing difficulties with the latest chromium daily build? whenever i click to launch it, it appears, then closes 1 second later i know that chromium daily build is obviosly not suppost to be a reliable browser, im just curios to see if anyone else is experiencing difficulties aswell

I installed Gnome 3 Shell using sudo apt-get install gnome-shell but I got version 2.31.x but the latest is 2.91.5 or something. So is there a way for me to install the latest build? Is there some repository available for the latest build?

- I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?

The problem is I still want the Stable version of Chromium, and I want the developer version of Chromium not the beta release. So I got 2 problems: I need to downgrade this Chromium to the Stable release and then I want to install the developer release of Chromium and not lose this Stable release. I'm currently running 11.04 Ubuntu..
The latest in experimental is 1.1... the stable by upstream is 1.2 and the latest unstable is 1.3. So is there a repository where I can get the latest unstable automatically?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was having some trouble trying to get video editing directly with Theora OGVs on Ubuntu 10.04. To be honest, the default Lucid video editor Pitivi (which is a front-end for gstreamer) actually works fine with ogv - but you cannot do video overlays (compositing) in Pitivi. So I looked at Cinelerra, LiVES, OpenShot and Kdenlive as editors that may offer overlays/compositing. They can all be sudo apt-get install-ed, but none of them wanted to run properly with ogvs - especially the ogv video preview didn't work. Looking for a solution, the following bugs came up:

However, since it doesn't seem a bugfix will be released for Lucid - that pretty much means only one thing, if we want video editing of ogv in Lucid: build from source. If we build all dependencies for Theora ogv video from the latest source: melt

then, in principle, working with ogv in Openshot and/or Kdenlive should (and does) work - if these video editors are directed to use these new binaries (built from source). Note that Openshot is basically a python frontend for melt, and it does not need compiling as such (though some precautions should be taken, see below) - so once the above sources are built, a test with Openshot can be done. I used for building these sources is HOWTO: Install and use the latest FFmpeg and x264 - Ubuntu Forums This HOWTO uses checkinstall in order to generate .deb packages from source, which are then installed into the running OS, to allow for satisfying of dependencies. I'd like to keep my system 'vanilla' clean, and experiment with sources outside of my system (i.e. as in a "portable installation") - and this post outlines that approach.
Basically, we download the sources, and build them in order of dependency - and since ogg/vorbis/theora source already uses it, we can use pkg-config to configure some other source dependencies as well: by writing *-uninstalled.pc files in respective source directories; and then adding these directories to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable. However, some manual changes to source files will be needed too. Finally, for each source package, we will run only 'make', but not 'make install' - and then in the end, we will collect all binaries (libraries and executables) in a single folder; and add a couple of scripts, that will setup an environment referring to these binaries, so that Openshot/Kdenlive (when called from this environment) may work correctly with ogv. Both x264, and libvpx (for VP8/WebM), have been added as recommended in the HOWTO; while Ogg Video Tools are added mostly for the (relatively new) tool oggTranscode. The rest of the machines on my lan are correctly using my router for that purpose. As a result, what happens then is that my debian machine frequently gets a duplicate ip address assigned to it. I would like to specify to my debian computer that I want it to use the specific fixed ip address of my router for dhcp purposes.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI tend to stay on for long time. My machine is a Fujitsu T4310 tablet. I have got all tablet features previously working properly when I was on Isadora Mint. After installing LMDE to my surprise basic features of the tablet simply worked out of the box but I'm missing a few important features like multitouch, screen rotate and buttons in tablet mode.
As far as my experience with Isadora, it needed a driver called "fjbtndrv", but I couldn't find it in the repos, moreover, I think it might need some tweeks to get it behaving properly. I found some refferences but it refers to other ubuntu based distros, which I can't use of course.
p.s. prefere a solution other than compiling it myself, it looks scary and has lots of dependencies.
I have an harddisk which is old, since many years >10 years, and I recall I crashed few clusters using windows programs which were old and harddisk stuffs doing. So the pc lives with bad clusters, this pc lives very well since many years.Question, the pc has woody debian, which let us to install and exclude bad sectors during install. Bad clusters was an usual thing in the past, but today not anymore.Unfortunately debian squeeze installer coders had the good idea to remove the " bad cluster checking " before installing debian, during install (cdrom netinst).
