Debian Installation :: Upgraded Squeeze To Testing?

I'm wondering about this because I'm considering doing this myself. Specifically, I'd like to know if your wireless configurations survived the upgrade or not. Meaning, where they removed, altered, or hopefully, where they preserved as they where?
Also if anyone knows of a good link regarding this particular upgrade, by all means please share. I have only been able to dig up a bit of dirt on the topic but they were concerning older Debian releases. Maybe theres not much difference?
I am still getting the error that no kernel modules are found when trying to load components from the CD on the multi-arch version of Squeeze. Are these even tested prior to releasing them? I mean I know it's testing but I thought we were reaching a release-date and the installer is 100% broken and has been for months. I have a pile of useless multi-arch CDs for Squeeze that won't install on 64bit or 32bit machines due to not finding the kernel modules. Can we get some testing on the installer portion of Squeeze?
When updating from the last Debian Live image (Squeeze) to the current Debian testing, apt announces a lot of packages being not required:

These include some important packages, like network-manager-gnome for example. Was it really intended to be removed? Without it, it's impossible to manage network connections from Gnome (only manual option of editing interfaces config is left). Is it a bug, or some incomplete intention? apt suggests to autoremove these packages. Should they all be retained, or only some of them, or it's supposed to be none? Removing some of them makes sense for me (like Epiphany for example), but some not at all.
I've been trying out a distribution based on Debian Squeeze, but what I'd really like to try is a minimal Debian distribution I can build from the ground up and customize as needed. I heard a lot of positive things about using netinst on machines that are usually hard to get regular installation disks to work on. Downloaded netinst for i386 this week from a link at [URL].. and attempted to install from scratch on my machine. I got past formatting my disk and was at the base install step. It keeps complaining about corrupt programs it can't install. I ran a check of the CD disk from the menu and it says there are no issues with the disk itself. I can see some basic directories and cdebootstrap installed on my hard disk. Would like to jump to installing kernel and grub or something and attempt to download some of the other programs later, but it won't let me bypass the step. Saw some articles about a Debian from Scratch project on the Internet, but doesn't look like it's active any more. What's the best way to get a minimal Debian distribution based on Squeeze installed to a hard drive? Should I just wait until the official release?
just installed testing on my netbook. my sources.list file all say wheezy. it was my impression that debian testings nickname was squeeze. are wheezy and squeeze the same thing?
Just switched from stable to testing. To run a pure testing, can someone tell me if I have all the necessary repos below?

I have an older system that has been running testing for about 4 years. Originally I was running testing for several packages that were not yet available in stable. However, now that this system has a more crucial role in the network I have considered moving it to stable in hopes that it I can gain some insurance on it's uptime. It is important to note that I have never had a problem with the testing distribution and would be quite content to continue running it; I do want to know my options though.
I have not yet updated the system since the stable release of squeeze, I am considering to change my sources from testing to stable and just let apt take care of the rest. Anyone have any experience with such a thing? After searching Google I have found some solutions to force a downgrade, but that is really not what needs to be done here. I suppose I should have switched my sources to squeeze some time ago and this probably would have worked itself out.
A similar question is what happens a couple of years from now when another release happens. Have you had good luck updating from old stable to stable? I've run testing on several machines now for several years and have went through freezes and dist-upgrades several times with no major problems at all. Will I see the same stability if I move to the stable distribution?
I just noticed that I had a sid line on my sources.list, at the end of all squeeze lines, and I've been updating more or less regularly. Does the ordering imply some sort of "preference", so that the first lines are preferred over the subsequent ones, or is it all about the latest version?After removing that line, and taking a look at my installed packages with synaptic, all the "latest versions" of the packages seem to be the ones that are already installed, and I click on properties, and there are no older versions available, only "##.##-### (testing)". Emphasis on "testing", rather than "sid" or "unstable". Of course I didn't check all of them, but about a dozen, and none deviated from that pattern. However, I went to double check on the web pages about the packages, and it seems that many of the squeeze's packages are at the same version of sid. I couldn't yet find one that is not.perhaps the sole fact that the sid line was on sources.list is enough to know that something happened -- as I don't recall having ever set up those configuration files about preferred sources/pins or however it's called), and suggestions on how to proceed? My hunch would be to just downgrade things gradually as they eventually fail (as I did with geeqie, which is why I suspect that there is some mess), but leave everything alone. Not try to fix what is not quite broken. And if it fails too often, go full-blown sid.
I attempted to move my system from a fully functioning Lenny to Squeeze, and the upgrade is only partly done. I was using my Wlan connection, but it went away during the process, and won't wake up. The box is nowhere near a wired LAN.
I now have the latest kernel (uname -r ==> 2.6.32-5-686) The old Gnome GUI still functions. On re-boot, the old grub still does its thing successfully. The question is, since I have lost the wireless, can I install the firmware from a USB thumb-drive somehow? lspci ==> RaLink RT2561/RT61
So it looks like I need the package "firmware-ralink" to make the Wlan active once more. I have internet access from several other PC's using "another" OS, so I could download the the firmware and place it on a thumb-drive, but I don't know how to proceed from there. I may need additional packages as well, so please comment.
SOLVED:The driver hid-cypress/USB_DEVICE_ID_CYPRESS_BARCODE_3 is included in the latest kernel.org, but not the default x86 Debian Squeeze 2.6.32-5. Downloading, building and booting a custom kernel solved the problem. I upgraded from Debian Lenny (2.6.26-2) to Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5) and my barcode scanner stopped working. Based on the details below, I believe the problem is that usbkbd.ko moved.
Under Debian Lenny, I had a similar problem until I set the system to load "usbkbd.ko" at boot. This caused the scanner to show up in /dev/input/by-id/usb-Guest_Barcode_Reader-event-kbd which enabled my application to find and use the scanner with no problems.
Under Debian Squeeze, I'm seeing scanner via lsusb, but not in /dev/input/by-id. Below are the dmesg logs. It appears that Lenny "input" is finding the scanner, but Squeeze is not (presumably because I don't have the right kernel module loaded).

so, if i change my repos from squeeze to testing and just keep updating after squeeze goes stable would i be asking for trouble?
i ask because when i dist-upgraded from lenny to squeeze i had some breakage - i figure if i just stay with testing i'm thinking it'll just update gradually.
For anyone using Blueman with Testing (Squeeze), todays Python upgrade to version 2.6 stops it from working due to a Blueman bug. This has been fixed in blueman version 1.21-4, which you can install from SID if you don't want to wait the 10 days for the normal migration.
Is Java running in your browsers properly? I just want to make sure I'm not alone. I'm sure a recent update caused the problem. A future update will probably fix it.
Java applets have stopped working on my main desktop and laptop. The server running stable/lenny works fine. Fedora and Ubuntu installed on the laptop also work fine.
Java applications such as JAlbum work without any problems.
Only Java applets in the browsers fail. Iceweasel, Epiphany, and Opera all fail.
It fails on my internal site.

Choising an hardware in LINUX is not easy since one has to check before whether it is supported. A large hardware base is supported , but not everything.
Which webcam is sponsored by DEBIAN TESTING that works surely with just a plug and play (skype / camorama...) ?
Previously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.
I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:

The upgrade actually went pretty well, except for what looks like a new "feature" to mysql-server-5.1. But I post here, because the issue seemed to be in "/etc/hosts" file. If it should really be somewhere else, feel free to move it. The problem is that I don't understand what this means. What potential problems do I have without a "127.0.1.1"? Or could this have been effected by some change to the "users" table in mysql? This mythtv server "musem" is my main machine, and is being remotely accessed by the Linux box next to my TV.
The strangest thing happened. I installed Debian testing with the "squeeze Alpha1" netinstall cd. All seemed to go well and the installer made me pick a root password and create a normal user account. However, after the first boot my user account did not work and I could also not login as root, it looked liked I forgot the passwords for both accounts. When rebooted in recovery mode, I got Code: sulogin: root account is locked and I was automatically logged in as root without being asked for a password. Then I found out that the normal user account does not exist. I created a user acount and logged into it. I did passwd to set a password, but I got Code: passwd: Authentication token manipulation error Also, there was no home directory for the new user.
I have just installed squeeze and I changed my source.list from squeeze to testing then did dist-upgrade/upgrade.After using for a while, I notice that apt tells me there are many packages no longer requires, all of them are default packages in Debian GNOME. If I use 'apt-get autoremove', of course, I lose almost everything in my GNOME desktop.Why apt tells me those packages are no longer required? It's ok or something is broken in my system? I switched from stable repo to testing repo several times before, but this is the first time I face this problem
I just installed the Debian testing release(with LXDE) from this week. Everything works great except the network card. I know the network card works because Windows and the Parted Magic Live cd recognize it. Also "lspci" seems to list the card, but when I fire "ifconfig -a" it is not listed there.
I am a ubuntu user but I want to go to the next level to use debian because what I heard of it, but I get confused to what to install on my computer do I install debian testing or debain stable with testing repositories.
- I want to use this system to the home use only. - I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use. - What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist) - Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?
I am currently running Linux Mint Debian Edition (1 not the newly released 2). I am going to jump back to Debian testing shortly, and I'd love to avoid a fresh install. Whether I should upgrade to Stable before Testing, or just point the repos to testing and jump. Will it make any difference? If I hit a snag, I'll do the clean install.

That's too tired, and I've never actually installed from a USB stick.So I set out to do this, for it doesn't seem hard at all:
I even get to use cool-sounding commands like zcat, so this is way hipper than burning CDs, of which I have far too many lying around. Now here's the thing, it boots up and gets started, but the versions of don't match. I have 2 debian testing cds 1. the first one I have downloaded at some months ago and the second one I have downloaded today. With the first cd I can install debian with out problem but not with the second. when I go to format it tells me that it was unable to format the disk. I try to format it with ext4 with journal, I also try with ext3 but I take the same message. What I must do to be able to install the debian with the lastet testing cd?
What is the best way to install Firefox 5 (with flash) in Debian Testing ? I'm asking this because, until now, I've used Mint Debian, and now when I switched to Debian, there isn't a firefox 5 package in debian repositories, and I'm used to installing software through Synaptic only
I have a separate /home folder. Will my user preference files still function after installing to sda2 or should I wipe /home and start over. ? I hate the thought of chasing passwords, add ons ect.
Where's the Testing Desktop Install CD? As I look at the Debian site the only choices I see are the massive full disk set, or the net-install CD's (url). The last time I tried to use the net-install method I got complex warning messages that a different kernel was installed--along with cryptic instructions I didn't understand. So where did the single CD, Desktop install disk go for testing?
I'm trying to install Debian Testing onto my Acer Aspire One ZG5 using the testing versions of boot.img and debian-testing-i386-CD-1.iso. I previously installed (two days ago) the latest release of stable, and the boot.img/CD1 from that worked fine, installed seamlessly. With testing though, the menu does not respond to the keyboard as soon as the menu appears to select Install/Graphical install/Help, etc. I have also tried to boot with an external (USB) keyboard, which again, works fine with the stable version of boot.img/CD1, but not testing.I did some searching and couldn't find anything that looked similar
