Debian Installation :: Hot Swap - Getting Ethernet To Connect PC To Lan
Aug 29, 2015
I am having trouble getting the ethernet to connect my pc to the lan.
now what i have done is install wheezzy jessie to a hdd on a ibm think pad i5 processor and hot swapped it to this pc with a pentium 4 which i am setting up as a raid server.
I have followed the debian manual to the letter with regards to editing the /etc/network/interfaces file but still it wont connect.
could it be a driver issue? the fact i hot swapped the drives from totally different systems?

Everything look great but I don't get how to connect to ethernet connection or how to turn on wireless. I always had automatic connection on ubuntu since 8.04. For now I'll look for some repository and download the "nt" applet manager.

I am currently running 32 bit ubuntu in my PC with 2.5 GB RAM, Intel Pentium Dual Core inside. I am coming to debian soon. I will be installing 64 bit squeeze. Now I have 3 GB of swap space. I do satellite image processing. Therefore what is the recommended swap space for me with the kind of work I do. RAM is in very small amount but as of now I have to stay with it.
Also I am interested to know would KDE be an overkill for my machine. Will I run short of memory when I start image processing?

I recently installed Debian 7.6 64-bit on Dell Vostro 1520 laptop.Using Gparted, create extended partition in the remaining disk space 67.91 GB
Install Debian 7.6 as follows
Code: Select all/dev/sdb5 / 8GB Ext4
/dev/sdb6 / home 17GB Ext4
/dev/sdb7 swap 5GB
I opened a terminal and ran some commands to show the results below....
Code: Select allroot@DELL-DEBIAN:/home/hugh# cat /proc/swaps
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/dev/sda7 partition 4979708 0 -1
root@DELL-DEBIAN:/home/hugh#
Code: Select allroot@DELL-DEBIAN:/home/hugh# cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
[code]...
I have a couple of questions....
1. Does the data above indicate everything is running as it should?
2. What does this command tell me about swap? "/sbin/swapoff /dev/sda7" I read somewhere it should be run on 64-bit system but not sure what it does.
3. Is the command "cat /proc/swaps" the best way to determine if swap is running ok?
4. Can I share this swap partition with another distro, e.g. Ubuntu or Xubuntu? as I would like to multi-boot for testing purposes.

Been doing some installations in a newly upgraded machine where I'm setting up two instances of 8.2 in slightly different configurations.Installing from netinst AMD64 DVD with firmware non-free. First installation goes smooth as then the second changes the UUID of the swap partition, meaning that the first then can't find it. To add insult to injury the second installation doesn't install GRUB in the MBR of the HDD.
Nothing different or special about the installation which is standard graphical with manual allocation of previously set up partitions. I don't touch the swap drive in the partitioner - just point to the correct partitions for / and /home as I want them. This is exactly as I've done before, many times.Setup asks me if I want to install GRUB in MBR and I answer "No" (because it would otherwise load in MBR of sda where I want it on sdb) then point to sdb in the next screen. Again really nothing different to what I've done dozens of times.

After some years using OS X, I'm returning on Debian on my Macbook Pro in single boot.
I've bought a Samsung SSD (850 EVO 500Go) in order to replace the slow built-in HDD.
But I've earned about the need of repartition of writing operation on that kind of drives, and I'm concerned about swap partition.
I need swap (especially for Darktable, browsers and maybe Steam games), but I wonder if the usual swap partition (even with discard mount option) is really recommandable for SSD drives.
Actually, on Debian wiki and others, the usual recommandation is "if you have enough RAM, don't use swap or minimise swapiness to 1", but using of swap file is not mentioned.
Indeed, if I have only one "big" partition on the SSD drive and TRIM activated, the garbage collector (low level) built in chipet's SSD will optimize SSD life, but I don't know how the low level garbage collection works with multiple partition.
So there is my questions :
- Will SSD garbage collection will preserve the disc use even if I have a 2GB swap partition ?
- Will I'd use a swap file instead of swap partition (I don't really need to hibernate) ?

Setting up a randomly passworded swap partition in Debian installer with the default settings (aes-xts-plain64 w/ AES-256 key strength) gives the following line in /etc/crypttab:
Code: Select all####_crypt /dev/#### /dev/urandom cipher=aes-xts-plain64,size=256,swap
However according to cryptsetup manpage when using XTS mode the key size must be doubled so in effect the 'size=256' parameter above is actually resulting in AES-128 strength, no? To get 256 bit key length the size option should be set to 512. Quote from cryptsetup manpage:
For XTS mode (a possible future default), use "aes-xts-plain" or better "aes-xts-plain64" as cipher specification and optionally set a key size of 512 bits with the -s option. Key size for XTS mode is twice that for other modes for the same security level.

I am installing Linux for the first time right now and I am facing a bit of an issue when it comes to network hardware driver installation. The NIC on my motherboard is a Marvel 88E1111 (computer is very old). During the installation of Debian, I got to a menu which read "No Ethernet card detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card you can select it from the list", then provides me with said list of driver names.
However, the only driver I could find that came close the NIC I am using was one called just "Marvel", and selecting actually didn't do anything (screen flashes blue and returns me to the same menu). So I continued by selecting the "none of the above" option, and now the new menu reads: "A driver for your hardware is not available. You may need to load drivers from removable media (...)". So I thought I should google for the drivers and see what I can find. The official site of the company that made my NIC doesn't even list my model in their drivers' list (to be expected since it is so old).
Then I found this: URL.., but I was expecting more of a download than the source code itself.

I'v just brought a notebook computer with a CPU i7 2630QM. I install debian 6.0.2.1 via CD driver, but it failed to success. The probles are three, (1).it reported "cannot find ethernet card" ; (2). It reported "cannot install continue" after the diskpartion step have been successed; (3). It said "netinstall may be a choice", so I say "Yes" and It really downloading something (543 files) and successed . After reboot, I loggin and cannot link to the internet. There is no such files ralated to netware config and I'm not able to config that, for I'm always only a bar finder in an meau.(shy a little, but this is ture). I do it 4 times and the situation and results are the same that I got a smallest netinstalled debian system on my computer and I cannot play music, cannot link to internet. I wonder: How could I install a real debian on my computer? Need I download anther version of iso file or do something that I do not know to makes it works. I can burn an iso image to a real CD by my old computer. I can also install OS such as mint via USB flash drive. In the computer Highly-Orangized world (already-wisdomed world), I have a body already but I've never been installed a sprit or a soul. So I really need to learn from you, from the great debian bbs, learn something of vital importance to take me into wise and freedom.

I am attempting to install Debian 5.0 amd64 to my Toshiba laptop, which has an Atheros AR8131 Gigabit network card.Unfortunately the installer is not finding the card. I have downloaded the Linux drivers for my card to a USB drive. When I tell the installer to load the drivers from removable media it is telling me that it is not able to read the files. I am guessing that I either need to place the files into a particular named directory or I have the wrong file format (currently a .tar)

I am a rookie to both Debian and Linux. There is a need of Debian so I just started my experience with the Linux system.
I have installed the Debian squeeze testing version and since when I installed the system it didn't recognize my ethernet card, I could only install what is in the installation CD1. Now I have a nice looking Debian system but very simple with a lot of necessary packages or whatever missing (I don't even have the update manager). Is there some way that I could launch an automatic installation of content in the rest CDs from internet?

I have an HP Pavillion Elite HPE computer I just got for a server. It has an internal gigabyte on the mother board and I put in one pci express trendnet teg-ectx eternet card in before installing. It is using the realtek 8169 chip. I had the local network on this card and the pubic static ip on the built in ethernet port eth0. After the intstall of debian 5.07 32 bit I couldn't get the eth0 pubic access to work. I can't get into the server with sftp or ssh and openssh has been installed and I can get into it locally on the local network.
I then installed a second ethernet card the same as the local network card. Now the pubic is on the which is eth1 and the local is eth2. I can ping out to [URL] but I can't get into the server on the eth1 using ssh and I have a iptables firewall and I turned it off and I stll can't get in. I am thinking that the eth1 card I added after the install doesn't have the driver or something. nothing is hooked up to eth0 right now.

Router works fine, debian refuses to work with it. I continued the install anyway but only have the first DVD so now I've got a useless base install that can't connect to the internet.
The fact that this installer has utterly failed where the others succeeded had drastically reduced my confidence in the debian team.

I was going to try out Squeeze on my ibook so I downloaded one of the weekly snapshots of the netinstall image and booted the installer. The installer was unable to recognize the ethernet card of my ibook which I found odd since I have used Lenny in the past without having any problems. Does anyone know if this is a bug in the installer or has firmware for my ethernet card been dropped from Squeeze? I searched around and couldn't find any bugs that were specific to PPC with this installer. It is not a deal breaker as I can just install Lenny and then dist upgrade to Squeeze,

I am trying to install Debian Lenny (64 bit) on my brand new Toshiba laptop (intel i3, 3 GB RAM) and for some reason the installer cannot detect the ethernet card. This is the error message I get:"No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list."And then there's a list which is quite long -- and I cannot replicate it here. But I want to know why the installer cannot find the ethernet card on its own or find the appropriate driver. In any case how can I fix this problem?

I just bought a new server with one of the most recent v3 Intel processors (socket LGA1150). The board (Supermicro X10SLM-F) uses the new Intel NICs (i217LM + i210AT), not supported by the current Debian stable release. Hence, the ethernet adapter is not recognized during the installation process.
I would like to be able to install something as close to stable as possible in a production server such as this one.

I have a dual boot netbook (Acer Aspire One D255) with Mint and Ubuntu 10.4. Using Mint, I was able to connect via the ethernet and install all updates including wireless driver.
In Ubuntu 10.4, regardless of what I do, I cannot connect via ethernet cable at home and at work.
How can I locate the right wireless driver? In the past, I have always been able to simply plug in the ethernet cable and get the necessary updates.

I am having issues with Grub 2 after installing Debian 7.8.0.The computer is a HP Pavilion 500-307nb. I made the original harddrive /dev/sdb and inserted a Samsung Evo 840 as /dev/sda. From the original hard drive (/dev/sdb), I wiped the windows partition, but left all other partitions unchanged (in case I would ever want to recover the desktop to its original state). I replaced the wiped windows partition with a swap partition and an LVM partition. These are my hard drive partitions:
/dev/sda (Samsung Evo 840)
Number Start End Size File system Name Flags
1 1049kB 3146kB 2097kB primary bios_grub
2 3146kB 944MB 941MB ext4 boot
3 944MB 94.4GB 93.4GB host lvm
4 94.4GB 1000GB 906GB guests lvm
[code]....
The partition /dev/sda3 has 2 logical volumes with filesystem ext4 that I mount to / and /home.The partition /dev/sda2 is mounted to /boot..When I install like this, Debian installs fine, however Grub2 is not installed correctly.Debian installs grub-pc which seems not able to boot the gpt partition. So I boot the Debian CD in rescue mode and execute:
mount /dev/sda2 /boot
aptitude purge grub-pc
aptitude -y install grub-efi
After rebooting, I come in the grub rescue shell, which says: error: no such device: 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7.
When I then enter in the grub rescue shell:
set boot=(hd0,gpt2)
set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/grub
insmod normal
normal
Grub and Debian start up correctly.why can Grub not start up automatically correctly? Where does the UUID 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7 come from? I have reinstalled Grub several times, I have reinstall Debian several times, I have even wiped all partitions from /dev/sda and recreated a new gpt table with parted and manually set the partitions in parted. Still on each reinstallation, Grub fails because it cannot find exactly the same UUID. Since this UUID is always the same, it must be stored somewhere, but it cannot be the partitions, I have wiped them and the partition table several times.
I did though a firmware update of the Samsung Evo 840 before reinstallation, could this be a cause? Also the problem is not in grub.cfg. Grub starts correctly if I enter the commands above in the grub rescue screen and the UUID value does not appear there.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030 running on Ubuntu 10.04. When I plug an ethernet cable into the ethernet port, simply nothing happens, and when I try to connect to my wireless network, it connects but there is no actual internet available. I recently moved to a student dorm in my university (RWTH Aachen) and I have an ethernet connection from my room. The thing is that I can't connect to the internet, I don't get any IP through DHCP. I tried using wicd instead of network-manager, and doing it manually with dhclient. None of those worked (actually I don't know much about how networking works so maybe I didn't do it well with dhclient). The weird thing is that Windows 7 gets the IP instantly and I can connect to the internet from windows. But I don't know why Ubuntu refuses to get an IP. Info from lshw, lspci:

Code:
sudo lspci -vv

Subsystem: Sony Corporation Device 905e

I had this sticky problem with b43 drivers. Unfortunately, on my Acer Extensa 5620z I'm not even able to connect via ethernet, so I can't download upgrades, driver or whatever. This was initially with 11.04, so I've decided to get back to 10.04, but the problem persists. Then, here we go with details:
networking checked - is enabled.
Ip configuration (I've got static local address) - is ok.
Ifconfig - recognizes eth0.
Iwconfig - recognizes wlan0.
Ping - 100% packet loss, always.
dig - goes on timeout.
netstat -an - doesn't show any connection with external address.

My ISP finished some 'upgrades' on its infrastructure. The result is that I am having great difficulty in connecting to the internet.
I have 3 operating systems on my box - XP, Fedora 8 and Feota 12.
I connect using an ethernet card, using dhcp. In fedora 12, the ethernet card is controlled be networkmanager. After the ISP completed their upgrades, I was not able to connect. I tried to connect manually using
Code:
There was an error message -
Code:
I read the advice here: [url], and removed all but the important lines.
But even after that neither ifup eth0 or dhclient eth0 works.
In fedora 8, the ethernet card is activated by ifup eth0 in /etc/rc.local. I was able to connect on a couple of occasions, but that too stopped working. I tried both ifup eth0, dhclient eth0, and tried to use the gui( which fires the dhclient command), but none worked.
When I use windows, it takes about 2 minutes to get an ip (earlier it was immediate). Sometimes that doesnt work and I have to click on "repair" whereupon it starts working.
