I have some servers... more than 30 (different brands: HP, IBM, Supermicro, Fujitsu, etc).
I wonder if there would be some way (and how to do it) to load the RAID drivers in Debian Live 7.8.0 without installing it?
How to load the driver for this SAS+SATA controller during install, I tried loading the supplied 5.0.5 driver from LSI but it appears that the options in the provided list do not provide actual support for the 5.0.7 release. Anyone having luck with the 9280 controller. I checked kernel.org and saw that supports is getting added for the upstream release of the kernel but wonder if anyone was able to workout a patch for the present Debian kernel in order to install the driver as the OS loads.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a new motherboard since my last one failed and this one has a Realtek RTL8168D/8111D PCI-E Gigabit on-board NIC. I noticed when I attempted to load Wheezy on her, she complained about the drivers not be listed in the Debian kernel. Is there a way I can slip in the drivers via USB or some other method so I can do a netinst of Debian on this new system?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.

I want to install Fedora 10 but need to build RAID (bcraid) drivers so the installation will see my RAID array. I'm currently running Fedora 6 & thought this would be the process:
1) Install kernel source
2) Modify configuration to include bcraid drivers.
3) Build new kernel
4) Replace kernel in standard build with custom kernel or load driver during installlation
5) Install Fedora 10
I'm stuck on no. 1. When I tried to install the kernel source, there was some problem with "mockbuild" (wot dat?) which I think was a red herring but I now don't know what to do about these unsatisfied dependencies:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 4 disk Raid 10 with Windows 7 installed & working. (Win 7 sees this as 1 disk.)
I installed 9.10 onto a 5th disk, but I think that ubuntu saw the Raid 10 as 4 separate disks and wrote the boot loader to hd0- I had to rebuild my array & I couldn't load 9.10
For the second attempt, I disconnected my Raid 10 and 9.10 is now alive & well on the 5th disk, (presumably with the boot loader on the same disk). Both Win 7 & Ubuntu 9.10 now work but I have to steer to the required disk via the bios for loading.
I'm reluctant to play with the boot loader (GRUB?) from 9.10, because it doesn't seem to like my Windows disk array. Would something like EasyBCD (used from Win 7) be an option?
I have got a server which has a motherboard with nvidia mediashield raid built in, with Centos installed it picked up the raid 5 array that i had configured as one drive so the os install was straight forward. When i booted the netinstaller of opensuse 11.3 run though the setup, when getting to the partition setup is was picking up the three hdd as seperate drives and not one, so i got to a certain point and aborted the installation and i re run the installer, the raid status said the array was degarded or something which i knew there was nothing wrong with it as i had set it up only about 2 weeks ago and there was one drive missing aswell. So i removed the array and re configured the array and rebooted and the raid status said healthy again as it was before on centos, then i run the opensuse installer again and it went though the process again but completely stop at "Searching for linux partitions" , cursor was working fine , but nothing else was so i had to press reset.
This was my problem, i know kind of what the problem is, but what i want to know is , i thought opensuse is based on rhel same as centos but how comes centos has the drivers for the raid chip i have in my board and opensuse has not.

sdb and sdc are the SATA raid disks... they have already been partitioned as a single raid 0 device... not sure why / how they stil show up as two disks.
I wish to install Linux Mint 11 with RAID 1 for my /home. I was wondering if I can install RAID 1 during the installation from the Live CD.I have managed to set up RAID from the Live CD and install Linux Mint 11 to it, but on reboot it will not recognize the RAID volume as mdadm is not installed. Can I install RAID drivers from my Live CD onto the installed Mint using chroot and get Mint to recognise the volumes on reboot? Is there a better alternative?
I know this would be a trivial exercise using the Alternate CD in Ubuntu but Mint does not have an Alternate CD (at least that I aware of).

I ve got a SATA HDD which I use for storage connected to a (now quite old) RAID PCI card (HighPoint Rocket RAID 1520). Ive added another (blank) HDD, same brand and size to the PCI card. Ubuntu (10.04) can see both hard drives and access data. Id like to mirror (raid 1?) these HDDs. Looking around this forum Ive noticed quite a few people mentioning FakeRAID. Turns out that's not quite the same as software RAID. Given how cheap the 1520 was, I suspect it's FakeRAID rather than Hardware. Perhaps someone can confirm? Given Ubuntu can see both HDDs, would this mean it ll have the correct drivers to work with a hardware/fake raid? A common recommendation is to use mdadm to create a software RAID. How does this work for partitions accessed from multiple Operating Systems including Windows XP?

Here are my steps, with the drivers on a USB drive -

Boot from the installation CD and select Install Ubuntu Server.
Press CTRL+ALT+F2 to switch to console 2 while Ubuntu detects the network.

NOTE: LSI drivers are at /dev/sda1, via USB
# cp /mnt2/9750-server.tgz /3ware

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a lot of computers, and have some with Windows7. One is 32 bit, and the other 64 bit Windows7. I've used Ubuntu for a while. I think my first live CD was from 2006. I have 2 computers that run Ubuntu as their only operating system, and have had a Ubuntu web server. For some reason, when I try to run a live CD on either of these Windows7 machines, install hangs. I've tried different CDs, and even different versions of Ubuntu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using my new laptop, hp dm4 1150ea, core i5 ( built in graphics ).I burned an install cd ( amd64 version ) of u/x/kubuntu ( all three ) every time i boot from the cd i get the welcome screen, i select to install then the screen flickers and thats it - the screen goes totally black just like the machine is turned off ) the cd drive keeps working away but i have no idea what is going on.Next time i pressed f6 for boot options, and asked for "noapci" and another one i cant remember - this time the boot worked but was very slow at one point.I also tried a cd of Natty alpha3 same deal. Will i ever be able to install normally?

Have already read some stuff about it and found megasr driver, which seems to be used in rhel 5. I also managed to compile this driver and load it into the running kernel of the other F12 installation. Afterwards, I created new initramfs by issuing: dracut --add-drivers megasr <file>
when this intramfs boots and raid is set in bios, fedora 12 boots from /dev/dm-1. however, the driver loaded is ahci and *not* megasr (therefore only raid 1 works) How can I create initramfs that will load megasr at startup and not ahci? Preferably with dracut....

I work at a computer shop. I have been making ubuntu live cds for a couple years to help test hardware outside of whatever viruses and other crap software people have installed in their os. Generally I use remastersys to create the image. However, it removes all 3d video drivers, for good reasons which I understand.
Does anyone know of a similar program or a way to include the proprietary drivers on a live cd?
If you happen to have any other suggestions for troubleshooting linux live cd's as well I would be happy to hear them. Likewise, I would be happy to share any knowledge I have accumulated. I like to think my live cd is a pretty solid compilation of hardware diagnostics and utilities.
I'm brand new to Ubuntu and have a MX860 wireless printer.I want to use it from the Ubuntu system.The printer is already on line and functional wirelessly.I downloaded the drivers but it is unclear how to load.I expected to click on something to load but there are a whole bunch of files enclosed.Clicking the install.sh file makes the screen blink but that is about it.A screen print of the main files is attached.

The server machine is a HP Proliant DL120 G5 (quad core processor, 4GB Ram, two SATA drives, 150GB each attached to the hardware RAID Controller on board). RAID is enabled in the BIOS.I pop in the Centos disk and go through the installation process.
When I get to the stage where I partition my hard drive,it is showing one hard drive, not as traditional sda.but as mapper/ddf1_4035305a86a354a45.I looked around and figured that I need to give Centos the raid drivers. I downloaded it from:

I follow the instructions and download the aarahci-1.4.17015-1.rhel5.i686.dd.gz file and unzipped it using gunzip. Then on another nix system, i do this:

Well i know why it's giving these, because i set it up that way, but i was hoping it would somehow change to the normal /dev/sda, /dev/sdb. That means that the driver i provided did not work. I have another IBM server (5U) with raid scsi drive and it shows the usual /dev/sda. It also has hardware raid. So i know that there is something wrong with the /dev/mapper/ddf1_4035305a86......a354a45p1 format.
First, is there any way that I can put the aarahci-1.4.17015-1.rhel5.i686.dd (floppy image) on a CD?. I really need to set this up with raid. I know i could simply disable raid in bios and then i would get two normal hard drives sda and sdb. But it has to be a raid setup. Any way to slipstream the driver into the centos dvd? The hp link i provided above, under installation instructions, there are some instructions titled "Important". But I couldn't get it to work.
Booting into a live desktop from USB, the correct wireless drivers pop-up to be installed even when not connected to the internet. But upon installing Ubuntu the only way to install these drivers is through a wired connection. Any thoughts as to why this is? I'd love to be able to run any version of Ubuntu out of the box, but experience always brings back the ethernet cable.
