Fedora Installation :: Crippling Graphics Error When Trying To Load Live CD
Aug 4, 2010I'm not entirely new to Linux, but I'm far from a standard user. I decided to give it another try with Fedora on my new Asus G60JX laptop. Specs: Intel Core i5 430m, Nvidia GeForce GTX 360m, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
When I attempt to run the live CD from either a physical CD or a bootable flash drive, it loads as usual. However, once Fedora goes to the desktop, I get this screen:
As you may be able to tell, it's a garbled version of the Windows desktop I had previous to the reboot. Evidently, something in my hardware is not supported. However, I fail to see how I can install drivers when this is literally all I can coax the computer into doing.
Ubuntu Installation :: Would Not Load After Install / Will Load Via Live Cd
Feb 26, 2010I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.
Here are my specs:
I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

Mar 25, 2011I am using my new laptop, hp dm4 1150ea, core i5 ( built in graphics ).I burned an install cd ( amd64 version ) of u/x/kubuntu ( all three ) every time i boot from the cd i get the welcome screen, i select to install then the screen flickers and thats it - the screen goes totally black just like the machine is turned off ) the cd drive keeps working away but i have no idea what is going on.Next time i pressed f6 for boot options, and asked for "noapci" and another one i cant remember - this time the boot worked but was very slow at one point.I also tried a cd of Natty alpha3 same deal. Will i ever be able to install normally?

Apr 27, 2011Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers.When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading.The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Load The Same Modules In The Upgraded 9.04 As Are Loaded By The Live CD?
May 5, 2010I was using v 8.10. It came to its end of life and I felt compelled to upgrade. I upgraded to v 9.04. All seemed well, but then I discovered that I had no sound. As a test, I booted up with the v 9.04 CD, using it as a live CD. I had sound, so it seems as though it should be possible for me to have sound from my upgraded v 9.04 too, provided I can make the necessary changes to it.
When using the live CD and opening the volume control, I get as the listed device "HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer)". That doesn't appear when I open the volume control using my upgraded v 9.04. Instead, it says "Playback: Null Output (PulseAudio mixer)". Also, when I check for loaded modules when using the live CD, I get many with snd in their name, but nary a one when using the upgraded 9.04.
Is there some simple way for me to load the same modules in the upgraded 9.04 as are loaded by the live CD? I tried to figure out the answer to this by reading other threads, but was simply overwhelmed by the volume of material and often wasn't sure to which version of Ubuntu it applied.

Feb 13, 2010I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 and used 'U904p' a program I had for creating 9.04 live USB I had before. I had 9.04 on the USB pen but thought that 9.10 would be better to install right away rather than upgrading it. So I run through the CLI and make it bootable and all that. I come to put in my pretty old (Spare parts mashed together) Linux box. I get this about 1 minute after the Ubuntu logo and loading bar:
Top of page: WARNING: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic: No such file or directory
Then lots of 'FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31-14generic/modules.dep No Such file or directory'
Then I am dumped in to Busybox in initramfs command line. I have been googling and look around the forums all last night and this morning. I find loads of stuff from 9.04 but not 9.10? I tried the old 'Pull USB pen when Ubuntu log shows' and 'Changed SATA settings' turned them off in end, using IDE. Could it be that I created it using the old U904p program. I will look in to the newer one. Seen it about on forums. Otherwise any ideas? I am wanting to build a FOG box for imaging all my PC's and trailing it for work.
Fedora Installation :: GRUB Doesn't Load - Make Load Again Upon Booting?
Feb 9, 2009I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

Mar 7, 2010i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

Ubuntu :: Live CDs Won't Load / Start?
Sep 18, 2010I've got a lot of computers, and have some with Windows7. One is 32 bit, and the other 64 bit Windows7. I've used Ubuntu for a while. I think my first live CD was from 2006. I have 2 computers that run Ubuntu as their only operating system, and have had a Ubuntu web server. For some reason, when I try to run a live CD on either of these Windows7 machines, install hangs. I've tried different CDs, and even different versions of Ubuntu.

OpenSUSE Install :: GUI Will Not Load - Blank Screen On Live Boot
Jul 1, 2010I have been trying to install openSUSE on a dell Latitude XT all day, and every time I tried to live boot, I got a blank screen. I finally decided to do a text install and I got it installed, but now I get the same result from booting off of the splash screen.
I can boot into text mode fine (still) but for whatever reason, it bombs as soon as I tell it to load the GUI. I have a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, and an ATI mobility chip (2000 series, maybe?) I had the same problem with Ubuntu, and since I like openSUSE just as well, I figured I'd try it because I at least could do a text install from my liveCD.
Fedora Installation :: VirtualBox 13 Guest: Live CD Installation Failure
Aug 3, 2010Running VirtualBox 3.2.6 under some host OS (should be irrelevant which one, right?), I created a machine, intending to install Fedora 13 on it. Got the Fedora 13 Live CD iso image, and an 8.6 GB virtual hard drive, completely blank. I set the machine to boot off the Live CD image. The Live CD boots nicely and I get to its desktop. I open "Install to Hard Drive"...and nothing happens. No error message, zip, nada. Inspection of the system shows a series of odd file systems, but I have no clue what they are for and whether they're usable or not.
The sticky [URL] mentions that the blank virtual hard disk should be partitioned and formatted beforehand...So I did, using the Live CD's Disk Utility (Applications: System Tools: Disk Utility). Although the sticky states the small /boot partition should be ext2 or ext3, the Live CD installer proposes to reformat it as ext4. Shouldn't we have formatted it as ext4 right away, then? Also, the installer set the /boot partition's size to 524 MB, not 200 MB as recommended by the sticky.
OBSERVATION: This was not easy because VirtualBox sets the display to 800x600 at most, and the Disk Utility spills beyond those confines WITHOUT PROVIDING SLIDERS. It was sheer luck that the required buttons (create partition, format partition) were barely reachable (at the bottom edge of the screen). This is a serious problem, because increasing the VirtualBox display size can only be done *after* installation (see for instance[URL] - since this guest addition requires rebooting the guest OS, it probably won't stick to the Live CD).
Once those two partitions are prepared and the virtual machine rebooted, "Install to Hard Drive" works as expected.
OBSERVATION: It is absolutely inexcusable that the Live CD installer (Anaconda?) does not propose to do this partitioning and formatting for the user. It is even more inexcusable that it should fail without giving any feedback whatsoever to the user.
Aside: VirtualBox's guest additions does not work correctly (for 3.2.6 anyway). The Devices: Install Guest Additions menu merely mounts a CD image VBOXADDITIONS_3.2.6_63112) without any feedback (expected feedback because the menu ends with an ellipsis). The CD, once opened, has an Open Autorun Prompt button...which fails to do anything. Manually running autorun.sh also fails. I had to manually invoke VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run from a terminal to get anywhere. Even then I was unable to go higher than 1024x768.
Fedora Installation :: Live Installation Hangs Up At Initial Login?
Dec 2, 2010I downloaded the .ISO for Fedora Core 14 Live, with the intention of installing it to my HDD.
I burn the .ISO with no reported problems.
I boot to the installation CD and can get to the point where it asks me to Login (a timer is also going down for Automated Login).
Once I click "Login", nothing else ever happens.
I can hear the disc spinning in the drive and it's trying to load something, but it never does.
I thought that maybe my older (2003) laptop might just be slow, so I allowed it to do whatever it seemed to be doing overnight while I slept.
Well, I woke up this morning and it was still doing the same exact thing with no results.

Oh, and I intend to dual-boot. I have already made a partition using Norton Partition Magic. It's NTFS filesystem for now, but I figured the Fedora Installation would give me an option to use that partition anyway - NTFS or not (meaning, it would wipe the NTFS file system and use whatever it is that Fedora Core uses). Am I mistaken in assuming this?

Mar 13, 2009Using live CD to check out Fedora10 on WindowsVista, IntelPentiumDual E2180, NTFS. Used Power2Go (default program) to burn ISO to CD. Shouldn't be the problem as I used it to download Fedora6 and those work fine. Downloaded and burned twice in case problem was faulty CD. Boot hangs up after initial screen indicates VMlinuz and image are loading, and graphic progress bar runs through. I get blank screen with blinking cursor, I can enter text all I want to. but no response to any commands. When I exit, shut down screen displays messages that look like I was totally running a linux system.
P.S. Found solution in other forum, press esc during progress bar load, now boot hangs up after loading cups.Going to check out boot edit options on wiki.
Fedora Installation :: Live CD Won't Run.
Jun 17, 2009I've been trying to install Fedora 11 all afternoon and have given up. The machine that I am installing on was running Fedora 10 with no problems whatsoever. I tried to install using the regular i386 DVD and it went partially through the install and crashed. I then cleared the hard drive and left two partitions on it (two ext3's). Still no go. Then I reformatted the hard drive, cleared the MBR and turned the machine into a DOS machine. Fedora 11 still wouldn't install.
The Live CD won't run. It errors out with a nouveau error. I saw the sticky concerning that issue. I still maintain that a system which supports nVidia in version 10 should support it in version 11 especially when it's on the list of supported devices (it's a GeForce 3.) I realize that a product can't support hardware indefinitely, but the device I have is on the list, so it should support it.As I type this message, Fedora 10 is installing without a problem. Fortunately, I was smart enough to backup my entire hard drive before starting this fiasco, so I'll be fine when I restore. No harm, no foul I guess.Very disappointing from a distro that I really, really love and want to maintain. I would have thought that the systems people would have put a better effort into the installation program.

The installation went smoothly.
Then I installed php 5.2.14 from source code.

Fedora Installation :: Can't Boot 11 Live CD
Jul 30, 2009I already know what the problem is, which is that I have an AGP Nvidia graphic card. When I try to boot the live cd it freezes. I've done some research and I've already tried using "nouveau.noagp=1" as a Boot Option from the live cd. But it says unknown boot option ignoring. And it still fails to boot up. Im anxious to begin using Fedora.
When it is trying to boot...it also says IO APIC resources could not be allocated.

Nov 27, 2009I have a problem when I power on my laptop (EliteBook 8530p) with fedora core 12 live cd in my optical drive. It simply will not start. The two numlock and capslock leds are flashing regularly and the screen is either blank, or it just freezes at the main menu (from which I can enter bios, etc). A HP assistant suggested that I should update my bios, but it's the same. I have also tried to install Mandriva 2010, which the laptop reads and boots up to a certain point when the screen goes blank, with the exception of a scroll flickering at the upper-left corner of the screen. Windows 7, FC 11, Ubuntu have been working till now, so I am inclined to believe that there's no problem with those particular cds (especially given the fact that I have written 3 or 4 with each linux image - fedora and mandriva).

After selecting my USB device from the startup menu, I see a black screen with the following information:
