I would like to backup my wicd profiles. I thought it would be sufficent to copy /opt/wicd/data and /opt/wicd/encryption - however, those path do not exist in lenny (which I am running). So which path / folders / files do I need to backup in order to back up the wicd profiles and configuration?
View 1 RepliesI accidentally deleted the Thunderbird 3.0 profile in both Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows Xp (home) along with their backups. So i really have 2 questions.1. How to identify which files to Undelete, perhaps using NtfsUndelete?2. How To get Thunderbird to switch to using an old backed up profiles folder.So far the problem with my 2 is that Thunderbird just claims that a version of Thunderbird is already open (it isn't) and then closes down.

Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface - Check the wicd log for error messages.
I'v just installed wicd. I can't get it to sart, I get errors saying that wicd couldn't connect to it's dbus interface and the wicd deamon has shut down. Then there's a report from SELinux saying that it's preventing /usr/bin/python "write" access on /etc/dhcp/manager-settings.conf and that access is denied to wicd. I can get wicd to start if I su to root, but I'd like to not have to do that every time I boot. Is there a fix?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use nm-applet with Arch/Openbox/tint2. I can't use wicd-gtk because wicd won't work with ad-hoc networks. I have tested nm-applet in Ubuntu/Openbox/tint2 and it works fine.

I'm having problems establishing secure sessions with my bank's online banking service provider. I've already contacted their local tech and together we were unable to solve the problem. I've tried deleting my cookies, session store, cache, and none of it worked. He's currently forwarding our conversation to the service provider's tech support line, but who knows what will come of it. Or even if they will offer support for an iceweasel user. I'm using Iceweasel 3.6.4~build2-1 out of the experimental repo.
I'm able to login successfully to online banking site to view my list of accounts, however if I try going any further than that, I'm redirected to an error message page that tells me a security error has occurred - the online session has expired. I get this on browser profiles 1, 2, and 3, however I do not get the error message on profile '0' (default) or on newly created profiles. And as mentioned earlier, I've tried deleting all persistent data (cookies, session, cache) on a non-working profile and the problem still exists. Let me know if I can provide any more information.
I'm trying to setup roaming profiles on our Samba PDC. I've been at it all day, running into a lot of issues with access denied, and going around changing permissions hoping to fix it
The problem seems to have evolved over the day, getting worse. Right now it's an error message on logging in: Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile.....
DETAIL- The network name cannot be found. In addition, the user does not have access to any shares by default.
The server can be accessed manually and the user can connect to shares. The server can be pinged by the client. The client's user profiles do not get stored or retrieved on logout/in

I've been at this for hours now and am still not getting it to work. I recently installed Squeeze on my home server, overwriting a Lenny installation. I've been able to add my NT domain accounts back in and pdbedit shows the expeted values - e.g.:

However, although I can log on, I can't get the roaming profiles working. I get the "windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile" message. Since my Unix account names/numbers are the same and the profiles are in the previously working /home folder that didn't get touched, I can't see how it''s a permissions problem. Noneheless, I removed an old profile which should have let WIndows create a new one. It didn't. I still got the same error. I did have to reinstate the groupmaps (don't know why the samba install doesn't do this) but they seem OK.

This script simply deletes files older than a certain age (in this case 7 days) from a certain location; I use it to purge old backups nightly, and it works as expected:

The problem is, every morning I get an email with an error message something like this:

I'm setting up my profile in gnome right now, with things like fonts, themes, wallpapers, iceweasel settings, menu settings, and I'm going to be adding a couple new users. Rather than re-do everything again, I thought I'd just create the new user, copy over my home dir, chown it to the new user and then login to make minor final adjustments, like specifiying where the music dir is and such.Just wondering if there'd be any problems with this, since it's just an idea I think should work but have never tried it. Any experience, or warnings?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been distro-hopping for a year or so, been through the downstream versions, Ubuntu and Mint, and ended up here. Other than some serious headaches getting wireless up and running, its been great so far. My trouble is that I have lots of use invested in Firefox and Thunderbird. As I've been hopping around through distros I've just been copying my profile folders and just placing them in the .mozilla and .thunderbird folders in my user folder. Then the software just pops up with all of my old settings, addons and messages, etc.
But this hasn't worked in iceweasel and icedove. I have been hunting around online today and haven't found any clues, and don't yet know enough about linux to hack this out and troubleshoot it. Any thoughts? Is it something to do with user agent settings? Or profile.ini files? I'd like to avoid manually installing the tarballs for Firefox and Thunderbird, but it is starting to seem like maybe it is easier. As I also have read that certain addons don't work with iceweasel?
I'm trying to shift from Windows to Linux I tried Ubuntu, but I was happy with it, so now I'm trying Debian. I installed the version i386 on an amd64. Since I still have to use XP I would like to share my Mozilla profiles. I followed the instruction I found on the web which worked well for Ubuntu/XP, but now I'm not able to get a working configuration on Debian Every time I launch Firefox/Iceweasel I get the message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." I've tried to fix the problem following the instruction found in [URL] and other websites, but I failed. Firstly I tried with Iceweasel then I installed Firefox, but it didn't make any difference!

Yesterday, I changed my ISP and now I cannot connect to the wireless signal, only to the wired. It had happened before that it took some tries to connect to a new network, but, after a few tries, it would connect. And then it would always connect at once. But now, it always gets stucked on the obtainment of the ip address. The same routher gives me a perfect wired connection... My wife has Ubuntu and she got it working right away, so it's not a password or router problem...

I have checked that the pasword is correct. I had network-manager installed but it has been uninstalled. I am trying to connect to a WPA2PSK router. I might be a firmware problem, since I get a 'message' on the start screen that there are some problems with my firmware, but I can't figure out how to check if it is broken, or how to configure it so it is correct.
I have the qualcomm atheros ar9485 wireless card. As far as I can tell, the driver for that is either ath3k or ath9k, both are installed. The message I get when I start the computer is: usb 1-1.1: firmware: failed to load ar3k/AthrBT_0x01020200.dfu (-2).
I recently purchased a laptop from zareason. Seems great, only I've been struggling with getting the wireless to work. I feel like I'm awfully close.

I've successfully install wicd, but it doesn't detect any wireless network. Other computers seem to register the wireless network in my apartment.
I recently installed wicd on a notebook with Squeeze. I can connect to the wireless network at my place. However I cannot connect at my friend's place. It timed out with the message: "Connection failed. Cannot obtain ip address."
It is a Thomson router/modem and the key is a 10 digit 64bit Hex. I did not see 64bit Hex option in wicd. So, I tried all 3 WEP options and none of them worked. We can connect to the same network with another computer with Squeeze and NM and also with Windows. This is the first time I am using wicd.
I decided to try wireless so I bought a TP-Link pci adapter TL-WN851N and installed it. I installed Wcid and firmware-atheros. I set /etc/network/interfaces to read auto lo iface lo inet loopbackAll Wicd does is tell me "No wireless networks found."

The laptop runs Debian Squeeze XFCE installed from the Live iso (uname -a gives 2.6.32-5-686 as the kernel) and has Wicd 1.7.0 for network management and uses the ipw2100 wifi firmware/drivers. It connects fine using WEP encryption at home and to unencrypted connections found in a couple of public areas. I have had one problem with a WEP encrypted connection in a cafe (got through encryption, but could not get an IP address. There are workarounds which I will try next time I have coffee there When changing my router to use WPA2, I get 'bad password' errors. There is quite a literature on 'bad password errors' and Wicd and kernel 2.6.32, however a lot of the pages are contradictory. The Wicd log showed this...

I'm fine using WEP at home, but I need to connect out and about as well and meet WPA2 connections in some locations
My university has a secure wireless network that has the following specs: WPA2, 1st Authentication TTLS, 2nd Authentication PAP, Encryption CCMP or AES, Thawte_Premium_Server_CA certificate and username and password.
I have never gotten this to work with wicd. First of all, wicd does not have a default template for this configuration. This led me in the past to quickly install Network-Manager (on top of XFCE...). While this has worked for me just fine. Recently I found out that this functionality is possible in wicd by creating your own template. So I did and here it is!

I must add: lxde Debian uses Wicd, so network-manager is not installed !
Wicd seems to be the problem. After changing to network-manager, everthing is ok.
Next install with the official Jessie release, i will look, why wicd not work out of the box.
I'm trying to configure my new school wireless network (eduroam). Though it *should* work in wicd just fine, it doesn't, it fails with an error saying "failed to authentize". However it works with plain wpa_supplicant. Here's the working wpa_supplicant.conf:

I don't see any option in the GUI configuration of wicd that is specified in wpa_supplicant.conf and not in the GUI, so it should generate a proper wpa_supplicant.conf.
Are there some more detailed wicd logs? Is there a way to give wicd the wpa_supplicant.conf part for this single essid and let it use the GUI generated one for the others? Where can I see the wpa_supplicant.conf it has generated for a connection?
I have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router.
Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.
I installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

all my test restores in vbox worked fine. i may use the backup as a second OS, so it works. but there i first deleted the old OS and than ran cp -a /media/backup_partition /media/restore_parititon.
yesterday i ran into trouble and had to restore my system.
mount /dev/sda1 /media/restore
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/backup
rsync -auv /media/backup/ /media/restore
that did work, but not so good. dpkg-errors, all non-repo-apps, like opera and some old thrash, were a mess. i had to reinstall them with dpkg to delete them. besides that the system is up and running, but it was a lot of work.
