View 12 RepliesI'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.
I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.
The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.
Have setup using Samba a share on the documents folder. When I attempt to access it from another PC, when access is allowed to everyone, all works perfectly.However, when I allow access just to a user, on attempting to access this folder, it asks for a password but on entering the correct password it does not allow access.

I seem to remember there is a section for questions about other distros but I can't find it anymore. I have made a live usb from a Debian testing live image (.img) using the dd command. It all worked well and it booted flawlessly. But then when it booted into the Debian screen it asked for my user name and password. I never set any user name and password so of course I couldn't log in.

I spent a few days trying ndiswrapper, and now have the native driver up and running. I can see the network(s) but can't connect. If I encrypt the network, i get a bad password error from wicd network manager (All encypt. methods- Weps, WPA etc) If I open my wireless up with no encryption, i receive a "can't obtain IP" error.

I'm having an issue that everytime I remote desktop to it via VNC it ask for the default keyring password, but how am I supposed to enter this if I'm not by the computer that I'm trying to remotly access? Can gnome keying be disabbled altogether? Never had this issue with Debian 5.
I have a desktop computer running OpenSUSE 11.2 with two network cards installed. I would like to use both cards for connecting to the internet using different networks. The setting would be the following: eth0 is the main (default) card, almost all programs should use this NIC for connecting to the internet. eth1 is used only by a few programs, which have setting for selecting which network interface to use. The two NIC's are connected to different networks, so the IP address of the NIC's, the related subnet masks and gateways are also different.
Saying short, I would like to have the two NIC's as they would be in two separate computers. I can set the IP address and subnet mask of the NIC's. The main problem is that I can only declare one gateway. How can i setup this? I do not use network manager, I configure network cards using yast, but if needed I can of course use ifconfig directly.
I've installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 with two network cards. One for external, and one internal.My problem is that as soon as i activate eth1 (external), i can't access the server from the internal network (eth0)
With these settings i can't reach the internal network from inside.If i disable the gateway on eth1 and enable the gateway on eth0, it works.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed Debian on a Sun Ultra 450 Enterprise system using the net install version, so I know that my network is working correctly. However, now that Debian is installed and I bring up Gnome, I have no network access. I've set eth0 to DHCP, and have pointed it to my DNS server, but it never gets any information from the DNS server.
I've looked through /etc/network/interfaces, which looks like this:

So far, nothing works. Why would the Debian network install disk work, but not be smart enough to set my network correctly from the start once I'm actually running Linux? Also, how do I get the network running in Gnome?
I'm trying to make a script that loads at boot and asks for user input before doing it's stuff. So I created a script in /etc/init.d/ following the example given there (skeleton file) and used update-rc.d to make it load before GDM.
But when my script requests user input, init doesn't stop, and goes on loading other services and loads GDM. I have to CTRL+F1 to get to my script. I want my script to pause the init system till it ends doing it's stuff and the the other services can go on loading.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router.
Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.

I have installed gnome,samba, mysql5, apache2, php5, and Virtualbox,bridge-tools on them. On serveur-debian2, i installed an other virtual debian lenny with apache2,mysql5,php5,nagios and centreon on it to view my network. I remember having installed a soft to access nntp on serveur-debian2 in order to test nagios.
Since a few days, i have problem to access to my servers. rom my windows 7 client, i try to ping serveur-debian1. Response is OK but not for all resquets Always from the same computer, i try to ping serveur-debian2. Response is OK but not for all again.
When i launch a ping on serveur-debian1 and serveur debian2 at the same time i have:
ping 1 to 10: serveur-debian1: response OK
serveur-debian2: no response
ping 11to 14: serveur-debian1: no response
serveur-debian2: response OK
ping 15 to 25: serveur-debian1: respone OK
serveur-debian2: @ip serveur-debian1 network unreachable (there's no error, it shows me the ip of serveur-debian1)

The laptop runs Debian Squeeze XFCE installed from the Live iso (uname -a gives 2.6.32-5-686 as the kernel) and has Wicd 1.7.0 for network management and uses the ipw2100 wifi firmware/drivers. It connects fine using WEP encryption at home and to unencrypted connections found in a couple of public areas. I have had one problem with a WEP encrypted connection in a cafe (got through encryption, but could not get an IP address. There are workarounds which I will try next time I have coffee there When changing my router to use WPA2, I get 'bad password' errors. There is quite a literature on 'bad password errors' and Wicd and kernel 2.6.32, however a lot of the pages are contradictory. The Wicd log showed this...

My university has a secure wireless network that has the following specs: WPA2, 1st Authentication TTLS, 2nd Authentication PAP, Encryption CCMP or AES, Thawte_Premium_Server_CA certificate and username and password.
I have never gotten this to work with wicd. First of all, wicd does not have a default template for this configuration. This led me in the past to quickly install Network-Manager (on top of XFCE...). While this has worked for me just fine. Recently I found out that this functionality is possible in wicd by creating your own template. So I did and here it is!

Sadly wicd's gui does not load my template!, the logs show no errors!...it simply refuses to take it. I cannot see any mistake in the above... do you?Is this some debian bug perhaps?This is the most important issue for me, before accepting to use wicd instead of NM.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed Debian and am getting a problem where I can't open the list of network connections. I can use the network manager applet to connect to wireless networks, but I cannot access the network connections list from there either (right click "edit connections)
I'm not incredibly knowledgeable with Linux, but I tried a few simple things I could think of like reinstalling the packages, or restarting the interfaces. (ifdown/up wlan0)
It's strange, because when I click "network connections," I see it show up for a second on the bottom panel, I get some rotating mouse icon while I wait a few seconds and then if goes away. Is there some kind of logfile that could help me identify the problem?

How to do this settings right to work fine, the ip are assigned by dhcp I don't use any static ip .When I try to browse the internet from the other computers some site's like {.com ; .org ; .info} are block, other site from {.ro} are working. Someone tell me something about turn off all my filters, but I don't know where to find this filter to turn it off. And when I use samba I can't have and internet access or vice versa. I am not seeing what i am doing wrong here, but here goes:
From my server I need to run a command for backup on 25 remote servers (through a script). Now I have pushed the public keys for remote ssh connectivity on all of them and it works ( I can push files using rsync without the need to enter passwords on the remote servers), howver, I need to run the following command:
ssh odsadmin@10.139.111.1 'cp -a /var/www/life /var/www/life-v4'
when I run this command, I keep getting asked to enter the password, I even tried putting sudo in front of the cp, but still get the request to enter the password.
These problems just started the last couple of days but I have been using Lucid 10.04 for a month now. My wireless Signal varies in strength wildly. I sitting at home, not 20 feet from my router. I never had these problems before Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04. I am running both Network Manager and Wicd.
Errors:
1. Wicd states "Wrong Password" which is not true.
2. Dropping off-line for no reason, sometimes 3 or 4 times a minute and sometimes it works fine for hours.

I have the Proper Wireless Drivers. I have not changed my wireless settings, channel or WPA for 8 months now so I know thats not it.
I just installed Debian 5.0 onto my laptop (Dell e6410) and it appears to boot and run fine, except that it does not recognize the network card (it did not do so during the installation). It also does not seem to recognize the wireless card.I have an ethernet connection, but running ifconfig displays only the local connection.I have tried adding -nomodeset and -noacpi to the boot menu, but that does not seem to change things
