Does Debian support Hibernation? I have a home file server, I'd like it to hibernate (and use least power as possible) when not in use. To access remotely we'd use wake on lan. I couldn't find any how tos on the wiki.
View 2 RepliesI have 2 windows pc's in my home and an office computer that have my files strewn about. I wanted to have them all in one central location that keeps a backup copy, so i used an old machine to start building a file server. I installed debian 5.0 on the machine, command line interface only. I have gotten ssh working so that i can do all my work on the box from one of my windows pc's by logging in with putty.my current problem is how to easily use the box hard drive for storing my files in an easily accessible way. i'm still working on getting samba to work so that i could map the /home directory to a drive letter on my two home pc's, but i'd also like to access files from my work pc. Before i do that, though, i wanted to know if this is safe and secure to map a drive on a remote machine through the internet? Are there any other security concerns I need to be addressing by having this file server set up?

I followed a guide with the hopes of my computer waking from suspend after a defined number of seconds (for testing purposes, 4 seconds).
Per the guide, I've added a file: /etc/pm/config.d/00-use-suspend-hybrid

After four seconds of suspend, it continues suspending, and doesn't go into full hibernate.
I've just installed new Debian 8 from live CD, lxed. The problem is urgent, I cannot do anything on my laptop, the computer keeps on suspending/hibernating every 30 seconds or so.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed Jessie on my Dell Inspiron 7340 and the touchpad works fine with xserver-xorg-input-synaptics. However, when the system wakes up from hibernation or standby , the touchpad doesn't react.
In /proc/bus/input/devices there are - among others - the following sections:

Can windows read files from a home file server with an ext4 file system? or do I have to partition the drive with the server (ext4) and an ntfs partition with the files on?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have both windows (xp and win7) and mac (osx snow leopard) running on my network. I'd like to find a unified system that I could use as a file server. Mainly, I'd like to have it hold music and movies, maybe run some automated backups from a win 7 desktop. I'd also like it to be a print server. I'd like to run the most simple and lightest weight OS for the server os. However, I don't think I have the basic linux knowledge to run Ubuntu Server as it is terminal based. I have installed it on my machine but I feel like im running in circles. I have it installed and can SSH in with my laptop no problem. I feel like I may be better off installing Ubuntu Desktop and removing what I dont need. at htis time the server has only a 40gig hdd in it, i also have a 500gb hdd i'd be using for the files.

I'm newbie in linux world but as much as i can understand is that i will need samba to make it work with win based os but what about mac's os x? is samba for it and how to set it up ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThrough the Black Friday shuffle of getting new hardware, I now have a 500TB external drive, a 1TB external drive, and an old computer I want to set up as a home server. My family has a lot of photos that are currently stored on many different computers and are not backed up, I want 500gb of space for photos, and for those photos to be backed up. That would leave the other half of the 1TB drive for assorted things like personal backups, and general file storage. I know enough how to set up Ubuntu server edition on the computer, but the options on how I can set up the storage is stumping me.
To Recap, I have 1.5TB of storage total split 1TB/500GB. I want 500GB to be used for a central storage for the 10+ computers in my house(mostly using Windows) and that 500GB would be automatically backed up. The 500GB that's left would be used for non critical files, and wouldn't be backed up.
What is the best way of backing up the files? (script once a day that copies files? Some backup program?)
Would the 500gb drive be best for backing up to(having the 1TB be where people would put the pictures) or the other way around? Does it really matter?
Any tips on the cleanest way to have this work cleanly with Windows, Linux, and Mac? How well do photo programs(Picasa, Shotwell, iPhoto) like a setup like this? Is it possible to have different programs on different machines all reference the same file system without their automatic sorting(to folders, usually by date) messing each other up?
I would like to use an unused desktop running Ubuntu desktop edition as sort of a file server for my house. I don't need to do much other than use it as a networked drive. All of the computers in the house are running either Windows or linux (and a google tv if possible). What programs do I need to use it for this purpose? I've heard something about apache and samba. What else do I need?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm currently backupping our home data (pictures, videos, our CDs ripped to FLAC which I spent a lot of time to tag accurately ), totalling almost 300 Gb, on 2 external USB drives, one of which is meant to stay at a friend's. I left the factory msdos filesystem as it was, thinking it could be useful to be able to connect the drives to a windows machine with no problems. It's certainly useful to have «normal» data that I can take with me e.g. when visiting my family.
I'm simply using rsync manually, checking for suspicious changed or deleted file before commiting the change. I do that every 2 weeks or so.
Now I want to add a file integrity management to my backupping scheme: I want to be able to check that new data I'll be committing has not been tampered with (integrity check before updating tags on my main drive), and I want to be able to check that backupped data is still sane on my USB drives, especially if I need to recover from data corruption on my main drive.
Since I'm essentially mirroring the data, I thought run of the mill integrity software would let me just rsync the integrity database, and I'm done.
But after browsing through the docs of tripware, afick and the like, I fear they work only with absolute paths, so the database for my main drive wouldn't work for my USB drive, that's mounted elsewhere when I plug it in, obviously.
So, I feel I'm missing something. It looks to me I'm trying to solve a very common problem, how do people do it?
Did I miss a file integrity software that works with backups?
Is there a trick like using a symbolic link pointing to whatever file hierarchy I want to check, and have tripware/afick/... monitor that link?
Should I run a more elaborate backupping system than plain rsync? Which one? (Storebackup for instance looks promising since it involves md5 sums, but it's targetting a completely different problem, and I'm not sure I can use it at all for what I need.)
I would like to build a server to act as a file/print server for my home. My wife, sister in law, and myself would use it. I would like it to be friendly to both windows and linux. My sister and I are both dual boot and for now my wife is windows only. Pretty soon though I plan on setting her up on linux as well. What would I need? And are there any "good" guides to setting something like this up?
I would like to use the system to:
- Store media / files
- Maybe have KMyMoney on it and share with the wife
- Hook a printer to and use as common printer
I've played with ubuntu for quite a while now and i picked up a atom core mini pc for cheap so i thought i'd make a hobby in setting up a simple server to store files on, access files on my xbmc enabled xbox and download torrents whilst i'm at work though the torrents can wait for future projects though i installed ubuntu server 9.10, i'm aware it's CL only, anyway thus far i've managed to set up the ipaddress of it and make it fixed i'm not sure of what to do with hosts at the moment, reading on it isn't making much sense of it's purpose or layout so i've left it as is i permenently mounted a fat32 partition to /media/stuff and changed permissions to 0777 only have one user on it, myself installed samba smbfs smbclient and an openssh server, and can do all the terminal stuff from my normal pc my current issue lies with samba, with gnome desktop i've never had TOO many problems with sharing folders, however i'm stuck where to proceed in regards to editing smb.conf as there's a lot of options, some of which i'm not sure i need

- under authentication i have security = share

I just received a 2 tb drive for my server to be. The pc is a P4 3.06 ghz with 4 gb of ram. I have found a number of posts on this forum, as well as on the net in general, about setting up a file/print server at home. What I want to be able to do is to access my server through the internet from my office computer (windows 2000) How can I do that? I have not yet spent much time trying to decide which distro I will use. It seems that a number of them are suitable for this purpose, so I just plan to try several from a live cd and then choose one.

I want to try and set up a server on a home PC, using Debian of course, rather than on a remote server. hosting web pages, a mail server and a file server etc. Installation looks fairly straightforward. However, there are one or two things that are not too clear to me:
A. Is it best to connect the server using Ethernet or is wireless OK with network manager or wicd or doesn't it matter? Answer: Wired ethernet is best
B. if the IP of my desktop Debian (wireless) has the same IP as the server, how do I connect from my desktop? The router has its own static IP address but assigns two different IP addresses, one to the desktop computer and the other to the PC being used as a server.
C. I have a static IP and a domain.com without hosting but it's status is "parked". Not too sure what this implies. [When domain is "parked" it means it is still hosted by the company that registered it. So it's necessary to "unpark" it.] It was very easy to unpark the domain as explained in a reply post below.
D. setting up DNS with the static IP? [Answer: in the case of the company i registered with, I didn't have to set up any DNS because the domain works with the company name servers, so it was much less complicated than i imagined.]
E. I seem to have only ONE Primary DNS for my connection.
F. it's better on a server to have no Desktop. It looks easy enough to install but, accustomed though I am to the CLI. configuring without cut and paste is very tedious.Can anyone suggest a way round this? I've thought of trying to use the lynx browser and nano. [Answer: Best to install the server without a Desktop. For editing files I used PuTTy, which enables me to cut and paste and nano having found vi pretty unfriendly. One day i'll get round to using vi or vim which may be more than a blast from the past! Once the thing is fully set up it would be nice to connect to the server from the first desktop computer using GUI tools.
how to set up a specific home server. What I'd like to do is set up my home server to check mail from various ISP's that use either POP3 or IMAP, then make that mail available to a local IMAP server.
Meaning... Server would just check every nn minutes to see if there is new mail at 2-3 different ISP's and if so, copy/move the messages to my server where I would use an IMAP client to check locally from my server. Before anyone mentions forwarding, neither of the ISP's does not offer forwarding services.
I've been a Xubuntu/Ubuntu/Lubuntu hobby user for about 18 months now. I started using Linux as a way to revive older computers provide a backup and expand my knowledge of computing. The command line was something new to me but as long as I can find detailed directions on how to do what I want I can usually manage. I set up a Samba server for my home shared network and now I'd like to make the shared drives of that server accessible from outside my network. Via ssh or ftp or some program of the like. I'd like to have it user name and password protected. Configurable user rights would be nice. (read/write/delete/etc) As well as novice user friendly.
My end goal is a server with read/write capability that I will be able to access from work or a friends house or anywhere with an Internet connection and my laptop. I understand about port forwarding and have done so with my home network behind an AT&T U-verse router/modem. I've researched openssh and some ftp setups but they seem like they can be difficult. Now for the questions. Is this task something that can be accomplished without a degree in computer networking? Is there a program(s) that would make this a simpler task? Is this more complex than its worth? How would I go about setting up such a thing?
I've set up a PC installed with Ubuntu 11.04 on my home network, given it the name "server" and given it a static IP of 192.168.1.200. I've created a file in the home directory called "Public" and set it to be shared with everyone, basically a chmod 0777 situation. Now, how do I connect, or map out that folder from another ubuntu 11.04 machine? I know how to do it in Windows, just hit "run" and type in "\server" and blamo, I can see everything that's shared on that machine. I can't figure out how to do this with Ubuntu.

I can either install the OS on a compact flash card and use hard disks as storage, or just install everything on the hard disk. I'd also like to set up a software raid for mirroring. I've never done this before, and most recently updated documentation i've found is for ubuntu. Any advice or good links someone can point me to on how to set up raid? I'd like to encrypt my hard disks but I don't know what my options are. It seems like people point to truecrypt, but i'm wondering what else is out there or if people have any advice on this. Would it be feasible to do this if I install the OS on a compact flash card and?

All I wanted was to create a custom 404 error page...i read about how people edited .htaccess files to customize error pages, i tried and failed also, editing apache2.conf, I got lost and i dont wanna mess up everything and also, how you're supposed to not touch either of those as its not how it should be done and instead you need to edit httpd.conf and i did and FAILED! again...

Recently my netbook (Toshiba NB100, running Ubuntu 8.04) has started crashing every time I shut the lid. The screen goes black, I press the power switch, and it doesn't come on. The screen stays black but I have a cursor flashing. That's it, nothing happens, I have to restart.
How can I fix this?
Hibernating windows 7 on dual-boot laptop (9.10 Ubuntu - W7) writes something on MBR which breaks GRUB2. GRUB2 does not load at all after hibernating W7 and the best solution is to reinstall GRUB with Ubuntu 9.10 cd, just follow the instructions at [URL]
