General :: Crashes Instead Of Hibernating?

Feb 7, 2010

Recently my netbook (Toshiba NB100, running Ubuntu 8.04) has started crashing every time I shut the lid. The screen goes black, I press the power switch, and it doesn't come on. The screen stays black but I have a cursor flashing. That's it, nothing happens, I have to restart.

How can I fix this?

General :: Windows - Free Up Memory "fully Hibernating" A Process?

May 25, 2011

Similar to this: How to "hibernate a process" under Linux/Windows? Are there any methods to hibernate a process in a way that it doesn't stay in memory? E.g.: If I don't want to use Firefox, and don't want to close the process of it, and I need free memory, then how can I really hibernate the process so the memory reserved by Firefox is freed up? I need solution for both Windows and Linux!

Debian :: Hibernating After X Seconds / Minutes After Suspend

Feb 19, 2016

I followed a guide with the hopes of my computer waking from suspend after a defined number of seconds (for testing purposes, 4 seconds).

Per the guide, I've added a file: /etc/pm/config.d/00-use-suspend-hybrid

Code: Select all# Always use suspend_hybrid instead of suspend
if [ "$METHOD" = "suspend" ]; then
  METHOD=suspend_hybrid
fi

# The delay after which hibernation gets triggered (default: 900 seconds, 15 minutes):
PM_HIBERNATE_DELAY=4

After four seconds of suspend, it continues suspending, and doesn't go into full hibernate.

Debian Hardware :: Touchpad Doesn't React After Hibernating

Oct 24, 2014

I have installed Jessie on my Dell Inspiron 7340 and the touchpad works fine with xserver-xorg-input-synaptics. However, when the system wakes up from hibernation or standby , the touchpad doesn't react.

In /proc/bus/input/devices there are - among others - the following sections:

Code: Select allI: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0001 Version=0000
N: Name="PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input35
U: Uniq=

[Code] ...

When the touchpad works, the "PS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" section isn't there.

Hardware :: Monitor "out Of Scan Range" When Hibernating?

Aug 21, 2010

My system was working fine. Then, I upgraded from Fedora 9 to 13. Now the system sets a scan range outside of what the monitor can handle when it hibernates. I copied /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the Fedora 9 installation. I added a monitor section with horizontal and vertical frequency ranges. Xorg restarts faster, but the problem is unchanged.CTRL-ALT-BS doesn't recover the system. CTRL-ALT-F2 doesn't give me a viewable text screen. I can ssh in and "killall Xorg".

The monitor is an 11 year old Vivitron 17 CRT.
I'm using the on board video.
I'm using version: X.Org X Server 1.8.2
OS: Fedora 13 with KDE desktop

General :: 32 Bit Color And Flash Crashes?

Jan 16, 2010

I've recently set up ubuntu 9.1 via virtualbox and am having some issues getting things startedFirst issue is when I boot up the virtual machine a warning box pops up saying virtualbox is optimized for 32 bit color and the OS is running 16 bit color. Some google searches revealed that for linux 24 bit color is what I want, but most suggested I edit the xorg.conf file to 24 bit depth. Problem is when I try to open that file it's blank. Further reading seemed to indicate that the most recent versions of ubuntu no longer use the xorg.conf file, so how would I go about switching from 16 bit to 24 bit color? Not a major issue but still annoying.

General :: Hard Shutdown - Crashes - Partitions & HD ?

Sep 16, 2010

I've been running Debian Squeeze for the past couple of months. I decided to use a ReiserFS (not sure if it's relevant) and had a few problems where I had to hold the power button to shut down the computer. After that the system was not the same and froze from time to time (long periods of freezing) forcing me to hold the power button to shut down the computer, again.

Now, after /dev, /sbin...etc... not being found root not exiting, I have decided to do a new install, however, after several attempts at setting up new partition tables, deleting data on the HD and re-installing, I have failed. Maybe someone can give me some input... here are is my /var/log/syslog from when I ran the Debian install disk: pastebin - syslog - post number 1941832 (I think the end is most relevant).

In the mean time I am going to delete data on the current partitions (if I can) and try to re-install.

General :: Evolution Mail Always Crashes In Ubuntu 9.04 / Resolve This?

Jul 31, 2009

I encounter a serious problem with evolution mail in ubuntu jaunty ...
probably after a recent upgrade!

When I click on Evolution Mail icon the applications is loading o.k.
Then at the bottom bar it shows the message "Fetching Mail (...)" And then it suddenly closes... And this behaviour is a standard one.

a) I erased the .evolution directory in case it is corrupted, so forcing the application to re-create it... No success.

b) I booted using the previous kernel (2.6.28-13-generic) The new one is 2.6.28-14-generic ... Same problem

c) I re-installed the application ... No luck!

d) I checked the /etc/nsswitch.conf file... Here is it's content code...

I don't see something strange here ...

Does anyone experience the same problem ?
What shall I do ? Wait for the next upgrade or turn back to Thunderbird?

General :: Montor - Display Crashes And Hangs In Ubuntu And LinuxMint

Sep 2, 2010

I have "successfully" installed both LinuxMint 9 "Isadora" and Ubuntu 10.04 on it, and found I have the same problem with each. That is, I am able to:

1. startup to the live CD

2. format the hd to be all Linux

3. startup the computer from the HD into Linux

Then, I get these problems, in both distributions

4. Monitor hangs on the desktop background for an immensely long time (maybe 30 minutes?) with no cursor or menu bar or status bar or anything

5. Eventually, I get a desktop that I would expect and I have an option to do things like update, customize etc. however at this point, the cursor is invisibile. I am able to navigate and get around by guessing (menubar elements highlight when being hovered over)

6. After about a half an hour in an operable mode (I have tested network connections, played videos and music from external HD media stores, you name it.) the monitor will mysteriously crash.

Clarification:
#4: nothing I do while the dekstop background is featureless, meaning any key on the keyboard or any normal key combination, including all the F keys, ctrl-F keys, ctrl-alt-delete or ctrl-alt-escape or alt-opt-delete or alt-option-escape etc. Nothing does anything. It is utterly unresponsive.

#6 What I mean by "mysteriously crash"? the monitor goes black and then the top half starts displaying what looks like a super-zoomed in bar code. The only way out of this is to force the computer to restart.

Since this happens in both the linux distributions, I'm at a loss to figure what's causing it.

I am using a Compaq FS7600 17 inch CRT monitor with this Dell Dimension 2400.
