Ubuntu Networking :: Home File Server - Connect Or Map Out Folder From Another 11.04 Machine?

Jul 31, 2011

I've set up a PC installed with Ubuntu 11.04 on my home network, given it the name "server" and given it a static IP of 192.168.1.200. I've created a file in the home directory called "Public" and set it to be shared with everyone, basically a chmod 0777 situation. Now, how do I connect, or map out that folder from another ubuntu 11.04 machine? I know how to do it in Windows, just hit "run" and type in "\server" and blamo, I can see everything that's shared on that machine. I can't figure out how to do this with Ubuntu.

General :: Slackware - Ubuntu Machine /home/_ Folder?

Jan 8, 2011

I've got a machine running Slackware64 13.1, and Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit, and today, while installing python-ogre in Ubuntu, I was informed that I had run out of hard drive space on my /home partition.

The /home partition is shared between Slack and Ubuntu, and just earlier today, upon booting into Ubuntu, I got a message that the /home partition couldn't be mounted (before most of the system had loaded. It was still on the purple loading screen) Well simply rebooting fixed this. Then today I suddenly ran out of space, and I thought I was only about half way through the allotted space. Well after some investigation I discovered a folder called /home/_ which was an exact duplicate of /home. Well in need of some extra hard drive space, and in conclusion that it was unneeded, I deleted it. And when I deleted it, everything in /home deleted as well.

First off, what is this /home/_ folder? Where could it have come from? The creation time is about 7 minutes after I created a new user on Slackware, and I think it might have been about 7 minutes after creating that user that I had changed its home directory so that Ubuntu's user config files wouldn't conflict with Slackware's.

Secondly, why did /home's contents delete when I removed /home/_? I already figured out there isn't any way of recovering those files (except for the files I luckily synced with Dropbox)

Third, is there some way to prevent this from happening again? Does anyone have any experience with this? Has anyone heard of this happening before? I already know that /home/_ was not a symbolic link.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Server (ssh) Takes To Root Folder

Sep 14, 2010

When I use the function "Connect to server" / ssh and leave the "folder" field empty and log in, I am taken to the file system root level (/) on the remote system..!! Is this behaviour really the intention? I am really surprised, I would expect to automatically end up in my own home folder on the remote server.

Is there any way to avoid this, except entering "/home/myname" in the folder field? I tried $HOME, ~/, ~, but I got error messages on all.

It is not always obvious where your own home folder is in the remote file system, it might not even be a unix.

I should mention that when I do a command line sftp connection (sftp name@host) to the same server it works as I would expect. So this sftp GUI must do it differently?

Ubuntu Networking :: Way To Share Folder From Machine To Windows Machine

Aug 28, 2010

I am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine. In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.

When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder. Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?

Networking :: Home Network - Connects To The Internet To Also Be Able To Connect To The Slackware Server

Aug 9, 2010

I have one pc on which I have installed slackware and samba (fixed IP, mask 255.255.255.0) I have another PC (also XP) which also has fixed IP running XP, and I can connect that to the slackware server easily My third PC connects to the internet and gets its IP address from the Cisco router(?) that provides the IP and mask on boot up.

I tried changing the IP and Mask on the slackware server to match the internet PC (which uses a mask 255.255.254.0) but the PC mask and IP changed on the internet PC I want the PC that connects to the internet to also be able to connect to the slackware server, but I see no need for the slackware server to also connect to the internet - I will mainly use it as a file server When I worked for another company I think the IT department talked about having 2 network cards in the PC that connects to the internet

Ubuntu Networking :: File Server On 10.04 Machine - Slow Samba

May 22, 2010

Both computers can access the web at 800+KBps. I've also checked with an OS X machine on the same network, which was also extremely slow, so I'm fairly sure that the problem is on the server's side.

Ubuntu Networking :: Home File Server - Read / Write Compatibility

Jan 30, 2011

I've been a Xubuntu/Ubuntu/Lubuntu hobby user for about 18 months now. I started using Linux as a way to revive older computers provide a backup and expand my knowledge of computing. The command line was something new to me but as long as I can find detailed directions on how to do what I want I can usually manage. I set up a Samba server for my home shared network and now I'd like to make the shared drives of that server accessible from outside my network. Via ssh or ftp or some program of the like. I'd like to have it user name and password protected. Configurable user rights would be nice. (read/write/delete/etc) As well as novice user friendly.

My end goal is a server with read/write capability that I will be able to access from work or a friends house or anywhere with an Internet connection and my laptop. I understand about port forwarding and have done so with my home network behind an AT&T U-verse router/modem. I've researched openssh and some ftp setups but they seem like they can be difficult. Now for the questions. Is this task something that can be accomplished without a degree in computer networking? Is there a program(s) that would make this a simpler task? Is this more complex than its worth? How would I go about setting up such a thing?

Ubuntu Networking :: Folder Access While Setting Up Ubuntu As File Server

Oct 8, 2010

I am fairly new to Linux, dabbled with it over the years but am a experienced windows user so not a complete noob. I am setting up Ubuntu 10.04 as a file server following a tutorial in Linux User and Developer mag which is great but having a bit of a problem getting it to work correctly.I have two folders in the OPT directory and they can only be accessed by using the main username and password for the linux machine when logging on through my Win 7 machine, if I try and access the directory called 'alex' using the Alex username/password I can log into the folder but only have read only access.

I think (but am not sure) it has something to do with setting the ownership permissions of the folders ..

part of the step after creating the directory was

# sudo chown -R root:users /opt/alex

and that didn't seem to work, it wouldn't allow me access as either user so I did

# sudo chown -R root:grae /opt/alex

grae is the main user and so that user has access but the user called alex doesn't .Can anyone advise? I am sure you need more info so please let me know what would help you see what the problem is
