OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up A Home File/print Server?

Aug 24, 2010

I would like to build a server to act as a file/print server for my home. My wife, sister in law, and myself would use it. I would like it to be friendly to both windows and linux. My sister and I are both dual boot and for now my wife is windows only. Pretty soon though I plan on setting her up on linux as well. What would I need? And are there any "good" guides to setting something like this up?

I would like to use the system to:

- Store media / files
- Maybe have KMyMoney on it and share with the wife
- Hook a printer to and use as common printer

Networking :: Accessing Home File/print Server Through The Internet?

Mar 30, 2011

I just received a 2 tb drive for my server to be. The pc is a P4 3.06 ghz with 4 gb of ram. I have found a number of posts on this forum, as well as on the net in general, about setting up a file/print server at home. What I want to be able to do is to access my server through the internet from my office computer (windows 2000) How can I do that? I have not yet spent much time trying to decide which distro I will use. It seems that a number of them are suitable for this purpose, so I just plan to try several from a live cd and then choose one.

Debian Configuration :: Setting Up Home File Server?

Jan 3, 2011

I have 2 windows pc's in my home and an office computer that have my files strewn about. I wanted to have them all in one central location that keeps a backup copy, so i used an old machine to start building a file server. I installed debian 5.0 on the machine, command line interface only. I have gotten ssh working so that i can do all my work on the box from one of my windows pc's by logging in with putty.my current problem is how to easily use the box hard drive for storing my files in an easily accessible way. i'm still working on getting samba to work so that i could map the /home directory to a drive letter on my two home pc's, but i'd also like to access files from my work pc. Before i do that, though, i wanted to know if this is safe and secure to map a drive on a remote machine through the internet? Are there any other security concerns I need to be addressing by having this file server set up?

Server :: Where Is The Spool File Stored When A File Is Sent To Print In Cups

Oct 28, 2010

I'm trying to setup a print server in Fedora 13. I've made it using CUPS and when I send something to print from a Windows PC it goes ok. My main concern is to know where is the spool file stored when a file is sent to print. I've seen in many forums that it is stored in /var/spools/cups. What I only see here is a file name c000XXX with some information about the printing job. I'm using hold print for this printer and before printing out anything I can't find the spool. I've tried cups-pdf and it stores a pdf file in a route but this is not enough for me. I need to know where the spool data is stored in order to know from who is the job being send.

Be remotely controlled once it is setup(don't have a spare screen and it's going in a spare room/corner BUT I will need to use a GUI for setup)

Debian :: CUPS Failed To Print File In 7.8

Nov 10, 2015

I have installed cups(1.5.3) in my Beagleboard black based custom hardware running on Debian 7.8 using 'apt-get install' command. I am trying to print to HP deskjet 1112 usb printer from system line but nothing is getting printed and the output of 'lpstat -t' shows the error : "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed "

The error_log output is :

I [10/Nov/2015:09:44:51 +0000] Saving job.cache...
I [10/Nov/2015:09:44:52 +0000] Listening to [v1.::1]:631 (IPv6)

I [10/Nov/2015:09:44:52 +0000] Listening to /var/run/cups/cups.sock (Domain)

[code]....

Please find the response from CUPS administrators below:

As far as I see this has nothing to do with CUPS.As far as I see the first error message comes from Ghostscript: "Unable to open the initial device, quitting" (this is in Ghostscript's gs_init.ps file). Therefore Ghostscript does not produce any output which lets then the filter from HP's HPLIP driver software error out with "cupsRasterOpen failed" and finally the HP backend errors out with "ERROR: null print job".Neither Ghostscript nor HP's HPLIP driver software belong to CUPS so that the issue does not belong to CUPS (according to my analysis).

I guess that somehow the "Ghostscript command line" is not correct or does not work as it should.Usually this is alos no bug in Ghostscript but "some where else" where the Ghostscript command line with all its parameters is created.

Debian Multimedia :: Print Cd Label From Playlist File?

Something command line that can parse and output an m3u file correctly. For example, not cdlabelgen.

All I want is a simple list of songs to print out to include with any audio cds I burn to use as a label in a slim case. No fancy labels with graphics and this or that. Brasero has a cover editor but the formatting is all screwed up and playing with text to get it to print correctly is a drag.

It would be cool if there were a script, too. Something that uses mp3cd. So a fella could fire-up his termianl-fu and run $ ./handiness.sh which would:

burn an audio disc from the playlist (which mp3cd does, of course)print out a nicely formatted list of the tracks sized correctly for a slim cd case cover.

That would be cool.

Ubuntu :: Server Vs Desktop For Home File Server

Dec 2, 2010

I have both windows (xp and win7) and mac (osx snow leopard) running on my network. I'd like to find a unified system that I could use as a file server. Mainly, I'd like to have it hold music and movies, maybe run some automated backups from a win 7 desktop. I'd also like it to be a print server. I'd like to run the most simple and lightest weight OS for the server os. However, I don't think I have the basic linux knowledge to run Ubuntu Server as it is terminal based. I have installed it on my machine but I feel like im running in circles. I have it installed and can SSH in with my laptop no problem. I feel like I may be better off installing Ubuntu Desktop and removing what I dont need. at htis time the server has only a 40gig hdd in it, i also have a 500gb hdd i'd be using for the files.

Ubuntu :: Set Up Home File And Backup Server From An Old Computer?

Dec 8, 2010

Through the Black Friday shuffle of getting new hardware, I now have a 500TB external drive, a 1TB external drive, and an old computer I want to set up as a home server. My family has a lot of photos that are currently stored on many different computers and are not backed up, I want 500gb of space for photos, and for those photos to be backed up. That would leave the other half of the 1TB drive for assorted things like personal backups, and general file storage. I know enough how to set up Ubuntu server edition on the computer, but the options on how I can set up the storage is stumping me.

To Recap, I have 1.5TB of storage total split 1TB/500GB. I want 500GB to be used for a central storage for the 10+ computers in my house(mostly using Windows) and that 500GB would be automatically backed up. The 500GB that's left would be used for non critical files, and wouldn't be backed up.

What is the best way of backing up the files? (script once a day that copies files? Some backup program?)

Would the 500gb drive be best for backing up to(having the 1TB be where people would put the pictures) or the other way around? Does it really matter?

Any tips on the cleanest way to have this work cleanly with Windows, Linux, and Mac? How well do photo programs(Picasa, Shotwell, iPhoto) like a setup like this? Is it possible to have different programs on different machines all reference the same file system without their automatic sorting(to folders, usually by date) messing each other up?

Debian :: File Integrity For Backups Of Home Data ?

Nov 17, 2010

I'm currently backupping our home data (pictures, videos, our CDs ripped to FLAC which I spent a lot of time to tag accurately ), totalling almost 300 Gb, on 2 external USB drives, one of which is meant to stay at a friend's. I left the factory msdos filesystem as it was, thinking it could be useful to be able to connect the drives to a windows machine with no problems. It's certainly useful to have «normal» data that I can take with me e.g. when visiting my family.

I'm simply using rsync manually, checking for suspicious changed or deleted file before commiting the change. I do that every 2 weeks or so.

Now I want to add a file integrity management to my backupping scheme: I want to be able to check that new data I'll be committing has not been tampered with (integrity check before updating tags on my main drive), and I want to be able to check that backupped data is still sane on my USB drives, especially if I need to recover from data corruption on my main drive.

Since I'm essentially mirroring the data, I thought run of the mill integrity software would let me just rsync the integrity database, and I'm done.

But after browsing through the docs of tripware, afick and the like, I fear they work only with absolute paths, so the database for my main drive wouldn't work for my USB drive, that's mounted elsewhere when I plug it in, obviously.

So, I feel I'm missing something. It looks to me I'm trying to solve a very common problem, how do people do it?

Did I miss a file integrity software that works with backups?

Is there a trick like using a symbolic link pointing to whatever file hierarchy I want to check, and have tripware/afick/... monitor that link?

Should I run a more elaborate backupping system than plain rsync? Which one? (Storebackup for instance looks promising since it involves md5 sums, but it's targetting a completely different problem, and I'm not sure I can use it at all for what I need.)

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up A Home File/torrent Server - 9.10

Mar 7, 2010

I've played with ubuntu for quite a while now and i picked up a atom core mini pc for cheap so i thought i'd make a hobby in setting up a simple server to store files on, access files on my xbmc enabled xbox and download torrents whilst i'm at work though the torrents can wait for future projects though i installed ubuntu server 9.10, i'm aware it's CL only, anyway thus far i've managed to set up the ipaddress of it and make it fixed i'm not sure of what to do with hosts at the moment, reading on it isn't making much sense of it's purpose or layout so i've left it as is i permenently mounted a fat32 partition to /media/stuff and changed permissions to 0777 only have one user on it, myself installed samba smbfs smbclient and an openssh server, and can do all the terminal stuff from my normal pc my current issue lies with samba, with gnome desktop i've never had TOO many problems with sharing folders, however i'm stuck where to proceed in regards to editing smb.conf as there's a lot of options, some of which i'm not sure i need

- I've changed the workgroup to home
- under authentication i have security = share
- i added the following section

Code:

Anyway on my windows xp pro machine, i can access \thork which is the machine and i see 'media-stuff' which is a start i guess, but im refuesed access automatically.
