I have just set up a server with Ubuntu Server edition 10.04. I installed it by plugging the harddrive into my main pc as the server doesn't have a cd drive. Now the drive is back in the server and the internet won't work. I have run lspci and lshw and neither show a lan or network card anywhere. ifconfig comes up with nothing related to eth0, and says the 'inet addr' is 127.0.0.1. My motherboard has an onboard Realtek 8101L LAN controller. Can't seem to find much with a google search

My problem is similar to this one [URL] and I've already tried some of the steps, to no final resolution. The OS in question: Ubuntu 11.04 64 bitProblem hardware: Intel Ethernet 82567V-2 network card[URL]I've already installed the latest driver using the README instructions (sudo make install, etc). The network card will connect ONLY to my Linksys router but not even to my Motorola cable modem, even when it's directly connected to the modem ! I cannot get any web pages at all outside of my LAN, only my Linksys configuration page on my router. As I said above, I've already tried most of the steps in that forum post above. I'm going back to retrace my steps to see what else I can do

I can't get wake up on lan (wol) to work on my network card. The strange thing is that before I had it working with the exact same hardware. But I was on Centos 5.4 then. Now I am on Centos 5.5.Am I correct in concluding that the sky2 driver does not support wake up on lan?

i installed suse (KDE) on my old notebook and now I'm trying to get the wlan to connect to our router and can't figure out how to get it to work. My card seems to work, the network manager even finds the router, but i just cant get a connection. I followed the steps of the "Getting Your Wireless to Work" thread and these are the results:
[Code]....
- i messed around a bit with the network settings and might have cluelessly broken something (or broken it more)
- i tried a usb-wlan-card as an alternative, which didn't work either, but could possibly have messed things up even more.

I'm trying to activate a wireless network on an ubuntu server 10.04. The machine has a TPLink PCI wireless card. Card is well recognized, and scanning for wireless connection it finds correctly the essid of the access point in the room. But when I try:
Code:
$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "apoint" key s:my_key_8
this error is returned:
Code:
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.I looked for similar situations over many forums, and I found that it could be the card doesn't support the encryption type (My AP uses WPA with TKIP). However if I use an ubuntu desktop live CD on the same machine, I can connect witouth any problem with NetworkManager 0.8.

I just installed the Debian testing release(with LXDE) from this week. Everything works great except the network card. I know the network card works because Windows and the Parted Magic Live cd recognize it. Also "lspci" seems to list the card, but when I fire "ifconfig -a" it is not listed there.

I'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.
I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.
The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.

I'm having trouble getting my wireless card (RNX-G300LX, from Rosewill) working with my Debian install. I have an HP Pavillion Elite HPE computer I just got for a server. It has an internal gigabyte on the mother board and I put in one pci express trendnet teg-ectx eternet card in before installing. It is using the realtek 8169 chip. I had the local network on this card and the pubic static ip on the built in ethernet port eth0. After the intstall of debian 5.07 32 bit I couldn't get the eth0 pubic access to work. I can't get into the server with sftp or ssh and openssh has been installed and I can get into it locally on the local network.
I then installed a second ethernet card the same as the local network card. Now the pubic is on the which is eth1 and the local is eth2. I can ping out to [URL] but I can't get into the server on the eth1 using ssh and I have a iptables firewall and I turned it off and I stll can't get in. I am thinking that the eth1 card I added after the install doesn't have the driver or something. nothing is hooked up to eth0 right now.

I can only hear sound from my front speakers but not from the rear ones. And everytime I reboot I have no sound and manually have to do 'alsaconf'.For information about what I have done: I have only 'su' to root and put 'alsaconf'.It detected my soundcard and the sound works but only the front ones. As I am new to debian(I have installed debian lenny), I would greatly appreciate any help as to what should I do.On googling around I found that I have to edit some "asound" file.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions to get a second TV/Monitor to work in addition to the desktop monitor for a PC which runs Lenny. The first monitor is a small TFTLCD 15". Works perfectly with a GEForce FX 5200 nvidia graphic card and uses the 173.14.09 driver. Having obtained an SVGA cable, I connected the card to a rather larger 32" LCD Panasonic TX-L32S10B TV to enable some armchair viewing of internet etc for my parents. The Panasonic TV or monitor shows all the boot messages but the graphical server fails to start. I know that both screens work, either alternatively or simultaneously, having tested with a Puppy live CD.
However, running
nvidia-xconfig --twinview results in an incorrect screen resolution for the 15" TFT Monitor; Gnome Screen Resolution Preferences gives a rather surprising fixed setting of 2048x786/50Hz when the maximum should be 1024x768. The resulting xorg.conf file is:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildd@ninsei) Fri Sep 5 22:23:08 UTC 2008
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0

Always has been crash with kernel panic. Both live versions and installed tested.Working fine only on Linux Slitaz.I tested on GeForce4, GeForce2 and some old GPU from ATI. Computer works fine on built-in GPU Intel Extreme Graphics 2. Everything is fine under MS Windows. No problems. But I don't want to use Windows.

I have a Toshiba laptop and Toshiba netbook (both Intel chipsets). Laptop - Squeeze install gave me the 2.6.32 kernel and sound only worked thru headphones but not the speakers. Later on, I compiled kernel 2.6.36.1 (and just imported .config from original kernel) and sound WORKED perfectly. I had a few other errors ("address space collision" / PM error) so recently I compiled kernel 2.6.38, which solved other hardware issues but sound is back to original problem (works thru headphones but not thru speakers). I even installed the "backports" kernel (2.6.38.4) and it didn't make a difference.
Netbook - Did exact same things as above but no matter what, the sound never worked on it... same issue (sound in headphones.. no sound in speakers) So, how do I "reverse-engineer" the laptop working sound install with kernel 3.6.36.1 and make it work with later kernel (nothing... and I've tried about 30+ thread suggestions makes the sound cards work properly.. other than kernel 2.6.36.1)

I have a dell optiplex configured with an extra PCI network card, because I plan to set it up as a gateway / LTSP server, but I have troubles getting the second network card to work. It is recognized during installation (where I can choose the primary network interface) and doing a
Code:
lshw -class network
After installation shows both network cards, with network 0 being labeled Disabled. I have tried configuring the other network interface in the /etc/network/interfaces file, but it has failed to work. I have also briefly looked at udev rules, but it seems that it renames the interfaces fine during bootup, as
Code:
dmesg | grep "udev"
Shows the following
Code:
[1.138307] udev: starting version 160
[6.003002] udev: starting version 160
[7.237092] udev: renamed network interface eth1 to ethlokal
[7.253775] udev: renamed network interface eth0 to eth1
I also noticed a briefly shown "address collision" error of some sort during boot, but it never shown for long enough for me to read it through. The network card that is enabled is an Intel 825662EZ 10/100 ethernet controller, and the one that is disabled is a Realtek RTL-8139/8139C+.

I have just installed Debian 6.0 and it does not seem to recognize my Promise Tx4650 RAID controller.
I have created a dual boot with WinXP 64. Windows sees my two RAID one arrays correctly (as two logical drives).
In debian I see four physical drives in file browser.
I contacted Promise tech support and they said that the only Linux they support is SUSE, but they did send me some source code to compile.
This problem is complicated by my newness to Linux and Debian.
Here are some specific questions:
1] Is there any debian package that is known to support the Promise Tx4650?
2] Where can I see if my Tx4650 is recognized?
3] If I have to compile it into the kernel, where are the directions for how to do that?

I'm new to Debian, and new to Linux at all (well, I have used Linux sometimes in the past; Red Hat 7.1, Knoppix 3.6, Ubuntu, and some other distros but by no meaning I could call myself a real, full-time Linux user). But that's what I want to change. After some research I've decided on Debian. At first I wanted to download a stable build (5.0.7) but I've seen 6.0 RC1 was released just recently and I've changed my decision to get this version instead. Anyway, I'm currently downloading the DVD (slow connection, 2Mb/s only) and I've spotted this page in the meantime.
Thing that got my attention is "Potential installation problems with RTL8169-based network cards". I've checked my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3) and I have Realtek 8111C on it. As far as I understand, it's not RTL8169-based but any real problems with my Realtek 8111C card, I don't want to install an OS from which I couldn't browse web. I know I had big issues with it while installing Mac OS X Snow Leopard but that's what I could expect when installing OS on unsupported hardware. So any way to install Debian 6.0 RC1 on a computer with Realtek 8111C network card?

Here ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Networks - ASUS PCE-N13
you may download the driver and install it yourself; once you've succeeded, I am a one-time Linux convert and quitter that gave up on Linux a long time ago, because frankly it is too complicated and I'm just a user who needs to get things done today, not in the few weeks time it takes to figure these things out. Since Debian Squeeze got released I wanna test it out, but my PCI card, ASUS PCE-N13 needs to be set up.
Driver install too technically advanced.
The accompanying instructions are far from self-evident:

Build Instructions:

I want to know if there is any process to record the commands executed from CLI to be recorded in a diffrent file ONLINE.Meaning whenever anyone who is executing any command, the same should get recorded in /var/log/histlog online (as an administrator I want to keep a track of the username along with time and tty) from which the command is executed.I may use tail -f /var/log/histlog to check the commands executed online.I am using the RHEL5 with kernel as 2.6.18.I have used the lastcomm to check that, but donot find it very usefull as it prints extra informations also (not relevent) some commands which are executed internally by the system while loggin in by the user.
