After I close lid on my laptop, it goes to sleep, but after I open it up, it never wakes up.
Laptop: Toshiba Portege Z30 Ultrabook, Haswell, Intel Core i7 4600U
OS: Debian 8.0, Kernel 3.16
I'm using a dell latitude d630 with an nvidia quadro 135M card. I'm able to suspend without any problems while running the X server. If I try to suspend on console without the X server running, the laptop wakes up to a blank screen. The screen remains blank and my only resort is to type sudo halt (with the screen off).I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver with the nvidia-kernel package on testing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I close the lid of my notebook computer and it goes to sleep and then awake, there is no audio. I have read a few other's postings and have found that this has happens on more than just mine. I've installed the very same Karmic custom DVD onto other computers, including laptops, and sounds works after wakeup on them just fine. So I suspect there is something with my Gateway that is causing it. In the end, I have to reboot simply to get the audio to return.

Everything is working fine except the button that is pressed when I close my lid. Hibernate works, Suspend works, blank screen works. user is member of the group "powerdev". I really thought thread "closing-laptop-lid-renders-computer-unusable-786822" would bring me a solution. When I close my lid my screens turns black with my mouse cursor on it. Connections with ssh are broken. Keyboard is dead, mouse pad too. It looks like it never start any software it just hangs immediately. I cant find anything in my logs.
I am using a old laptop as a server now and its running great! I would like to disable sleep/hibernation when I close the lid (i would prefer the screen still shut off if possible) ...
This has to be done via command line because I don't use a gui ...
I am currently running squeeze with the 2.6.32-trunk amd64 kernel.
If I close the laptop lid the screen will not turn back on and the laptop becomes unresponsive. The only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button down until it dies.
Since my laptop went back to DELL to be repaired closing the lid does nothing. It used to put the laptop into suspend. I even tried on my windows partition and closing it still does nothing. I suspected that the switch(?) that controls this is not sending any data to the laptop - is there away to see if any input is being received when the lid is closed? Or does anyone have any other thoughts on what might be at fault?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 via Update Manager. Upon reboot after the upgrade, I only got as far as the log-on sound and the laptop locked up. Even the power button was unresponsive, so I had to unplug the laptop and let the battery run out to get the thing turned off. I then tried doing a clean install from the CD, but got the same lock-up problem afterwards. I finally had to do a clean reinstallation of 9.10. I am using a Sony PCG-GRT240G Notebook. Are there any steps I can take to get 10.04 to work flawlessly? To get 9.10 to work flawlessly, all I had to do was boot with the noapic parameter.

My question aims to be generic, both for Windows and Linux. Something useful should be locking the laptop when closing the lid (Win + L in windows), or running expensive processes such as antivirus analysis etc. without doing it manually before closing the lid.
Since support for 8.04 LTS will be ending soon, I decided to move up to 10.04 LTS. On my old Thinkpad A20m laptop, the install went well, and everything seemed to work except the middle trackpoint button. Fixed that easily by editing a conf file. Then I began to notice some problems; all power management options (suspend, idle timers, etc) have no effect. I checked the startup logs and it seems that ACPI was not loading due to my aged bios (yes it's the newest version available). I tried using acpi=force in the boot options, and viola: power management is working. But that made two other problems crop up.
Problem 2: Since using acpi=force, the laptop runs so hot it sometimes gets sluggish and locks up. I tried installing "thinkfan" from
the ubuntu repositories to have some way of easily changing the fan behavior(which I believe relies on ACPI in some fashion). No luck there. ACPI seems to not see my fan at all, and it only kicks on when the bios high temp failsafe is tripped. I should also mention I am using Xubuntu (for the lighter desktop). I'm still kind of an Ubuntu-noob, so I wasn't sure what other info to post.
I have a dell computer that runs kubuntu very nicely. Virtualbox runs in it great and i installed windows xp in a breeze.
My dell laptop however freezes up when i try to boot my windows install cd. I'm running kubuntu on it as well (both run 10.04) and both were just freshly installed with kubuntu.
I just can't boot the cd for some reason. Laptop totally locks up and you have to press the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off.
It's an amd turion 64 x2 dual core processor in my laptop, whereas my desktop is an intel e5200 cpu. That's the only thing i can think of that might require special settings or something in virtualbox. I've played around with all the cpu settings in virtualbox, but every single time, it totally locks up the computer.
I recently upgraded my laptop from Lucid to Meerkat 10.10. Everything was fine until I closed my laptop cover. In "suspend" , I can't come back. I get a black screen with a frozen cursor, and I have to reboot. Not a good situation with a laptop. Is there anything I can do? I prefer Meerkat to Lucid for my laptop except for this one area.

The laptop is locked, so I can type in my password, hit enter, and once I'm logged in again the screen is perfectly fine, so the system itself works, only the display is the problem
View 5 Replies View RelatedGnome (or XORG, I'm not sure which name to give it) freezes up not always, but about once every 24 hours after I close the laptop's cover/lid. I know this happens when I close the lid rather than open it judging by the time the clock is locked at. The cursor will move around on the screen, but noting will react to it in any way. Other services such as FTP and Samba still work just fine when the computer is "locked down". Without more details to why the problem is occurring, I have no idea what to search for or where to get started solving the problem. I have attached the XORG logs (found in var/log) in case they are of any use.

Basically, it hibernates/sleeps the laptop when I close the lid. When I open the lid though, it turns on the laptop, but brings me a black screen.

It looks like something must've slipped the attention of Ubuntu developers as in the previous LTS version laptop suspension after closing the lid worked perfectly fine for me (Dell Latitude D820) while after upgrading to Meerkat it doesn't work any more....well sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't - it behaves sort of like a weather in UK/Ireland ...anyway...is there more information I could provide to you guys or is there something you could give me to point me to the right direction ?

This has only started happening after I configured the usb ports to work in my VM. This problem first occurred after upgrading to 9.10. I can reconnect after restarting. I tried several things before breaking down and reinstalling 9.04. After installing 9.04, everything works great. Any suggestions on what is going on before I try upgrading to 9.10 again? I have a Dell D600.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAcer 5250-BZ475 laptop, fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. Boots up beautifully as long as an ethernet cable is plugged in. Otherwise, I get to the login screen and have just enough time to start typing in my password before the entire system hangs hard - no mouse, no keyboard, can't even get to a terminal, nothing. Have to hard power off the machine.
It seems to be a problem with the wireless card trying to initialize, but there doesn't seem to be a bios option to disable wireless on this laptop, so I'm a bit at a loss as to how to fix this problem. By the way, wireless works fine if I boot up with a cable connected - I can see all the wireless access points in my area no problem. I just can't boot without a wired connection, which makes my laptop more or less useless when I'm away from home with it.
I had the Wireless Broadband working. It stopped working after I closed the laptop (suspend). Also the wifi will not connect until reboot. Now the entry for the Wireless Broadband is gone, and the tab for it is greyed out as well.I would be happy to submit this as a bug and assist with the debugging process.

When I choose to hibernate, the computer starts to do so, and powers off, and almost immediately it wakes up and comes back to the locked screen. I am using 32 bit version. Hibernate used to work properly on Hardy. I checked that my swap space is more than twice my RAM size.

I've installed proprietary driver and configured xorg long ago, but now very often I see artefacts on desktop after i close a programm, i.e. as if some of the parts of window or text still remain on the desktop after i close the window. And I have a Walkman media player and whenever I start the program with it plugged in it will run for a few seconds and close. But when the device isn't plugged in it will run forever (the right way until I close it). While it was running I too a look at the contents of the walkman through the devices icon on the left and everything is listed as unknown. Whats going on here what do I have to upgrade/downgrade or install/uninstall.
