Debian :: <Squeeze> Closing Laptop Lid Renders Computer Unusable?

Feb 3, 2010

I am currently running squeeze with the 2.6.32-trunk amd64 kernel.

If I close the laptop lid the screen will not turn back on and the laptop becomes unresponsive. The only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button down until it dies.

Debian :: Closing Laptop Lid Stops Computer

Dec 5, 2010

I have a Dell Latitude D505. I installed Squeeze on 12 November 2011 from the weekly DVD. I install updates every day, when available.
My kernel: 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Thu Nov 25 18:43:34 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Everything is working fine except the button that is pressed when I close my lid. Hibernate works, Suspend works, blank screen works. user is member of the group "powerdev". I really thought thread "closing-laptop-lid-renders-computer-unusable-786822" would bring me a solution. When I close my lid my screens turns black with my mouse cursor on it. Connections with ssh are broken. Keyboard is dead, mouse pad too. It looks like it never start any software it just hangs immediately. I cant find anything in my logs.

Ubuntu :: Strange Bug Renders Keyboard Unusable?

Apr 11, 2010

I have encountered the strangest bug, filled with so many inconsistencies that I am unable to comprehend why or how it is happening. It has only happened once and whilst it seems to resemble another bug that I found when looking for this one, it is fundamentally different. Here are the facts:1. I am using an Acer Aspire One netbook.2. This netbook is running Ubuntu 9.10.3. It has been running Ubuntu 9.10 since the first time it was released as stable.4. Yesterday, whilst I was engaging in an intellectually stimulating debate through the convenience of Pidgin, I encountered the said bug with the following attributes:The keyboard has the appearance of not working.

But if one applies a lot of pressure to each key, one is able to type. This bug is not resolved by a system reset. This bug does not affect my BIOS or even Ubuntu until I log into the particular account where it first happened. When I log out of the account and log into another one, my keyboard is perfectly responsive. When I log back into the "damaged account", the keyboard is once more unusable. The right click menus do work, in stark contrast to another, similar bug, the report of which I encountered in my search for this one.So, clearly, an undesirable workaround would be to migrate to a new user on my system. This, however, does not change the fact that I do not wish to do this another time if the bug repeats itself. Furthermore, if it is only active in a session of the "damaged account", it is likely that it is a configuration error of sorts, no? I have another strange configuration error on that account. The little icon that allows me to choose to which wireless network I wish to connect is random in when it chooses to appear or not, although the service is active (as I am greeted with a message directing me to click on the non-existing icon in order to select the network...). Yet again, this only happens when logged into a particular user, while other users seem completely unaffected.

What I conclude from this is that Ubuntu's configuration system is pretty erratic and it makes seemingly random yet seemingly irreversible changes to user configuration. I would not even know where to start when faced with reading through different configuration files. Furthermore, I would feel as though my PC were constantly working against me. It is a strange feeling, when I bought it with the intention that we might work together.

I have a problem after running zypper up. Apparantly somehow it upgraded to current factory release.. Problems so farNo networkNo x - session(after a quick hack i have x started but no input devices work)I think there is something wrong with udev and my xorg.confx first complained about InputDevice not being recognised.. I moved away my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and got a quick running session (without input devices, so icannot log on) but after a reboot it gives me a "black" screenWhile troubleshooting is encountered the problem that my network card is not recognised.. This all points in the direction of udev or whatever to be badly configured during upgrade..

Ubuntu Servers :: USB Drive Not Working - Renders System Unusable

Jul 26, 2011

I formatted a 1.5 Tb western digital external usb drive to ext4 for media streaming on ubuntu-server. I tried FAT32/NTFS before but it keeps unmounting itself for no reason. I tried everything I could find on Google but no luck. After formatting it to ext4, it worked OK for a while but for some reason it has stopped working. Running mount -a makes system unusable indefinitely. It works only if I restart it.

Is ext4 not a compatible format for external drive? Since, I have I tried different formats and Ubuntu keeps unmounting them. Should I try a different distro?

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze On Thinkpad R400 Laptop Getting Very Hot?

Apr 6, 2011

I have Lenovo Thinkpad R400 laptop. It has Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor with ATI Radeon 3400 series graphics card and Intel Mobility chipset series 4 Integrated graphics controller. I have Squeeze ( stable) installed on it with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 .

My laptop gets very hot within 10 minutes whether I do any task or not. Also battery life is almost 40% as compared to Windows. I am more worried about temperature as it remains completely cool in windows. Mostly CPU load remains around 10% and CPU spends 99.99% time at 800MHz clock. I believe heat generated is by graphics card chipset.

Following are some information about my machine

Fedora X86/64bit :: F13 Slows Down Randomly So Computer Is Unusable

Sep 17, 2010

I'm new to Fedora/Linux trying it out because I'm becoming hacked off with Windows taking so much time to do anything. The problem I have is that every now and again the computer slows down so drastically that the mouse movements are jerky, response to clicks/key inputs take about 2-3 mins to get a response and the only solution is to press and hold the power button. I'm running a Packard Bell Dot M/U. It has mobile celeron 1.3GHz 64 bit, 3GB ram. Intel wi-fi, atheros LAN (i think), HDMI output. I believe that it is v similar to an Acer Aspire 1410 (but not 100% same).

Debian Installation :: Using Squeeze 64b On Dell Latitude D830 With Intel I965GM Laptop?

Aug 17, 2010

I'm trying to start using Debian Squeeze 64b on my laptop, which is Dell Latitude D830 with Intel i965GM.

After Debian installation, when system should display some nice background and window which please me to log in, I see my screen gets blank, fuzzy, blank again, ...and after several times finaly all hangs. Surprisingly mouse pointer is displayed nicely and works. I can't use network on Debian becouse of windows authorization program which i can run in wine on KDE. This works on Kubuntu.

What I did already:

I installed KUBUNTU 10.04 LTS and it's doing job well.

I installed Debian Squeeze with options:

- enabled:base system, laptop

- disabled:graphical environment

After instalation I logged in on root account and did:

1. aptitude install xserver-xorg xbase-clients xfonts-base xterm
2. aptitude install kdebase kde-i18n-pl
3. aptitude install kdm
4. reboot
5. problem occurs

@2: Googling everywhere i found several installation guides pointing to instal pure KDE by installing kde-core package, but it seems Squeeze does not have it.

@3: Unfortunately this command did not install nor update anything.

All I want to do is to install pure Debian with xorg and kde core (not full kde package) for later customization.

I tried to:

- generate xorg.conf (X -configure) and place it at /etc/X11/

- use xorg.conf working for other people in web.

- dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

- googling & forum search for my specific problem and for errors found in syslog; with no working solution.

Debian :: Evince Renders The PDF Poorly?

Jul 11, 2011

I noticed (in my couple of days Debian experience) that most of my PDF files renders poorly in Evince. And poorly is gentle word to say, as they are unreadable: So I searched Software Center for some programs and installed XPDF, but this program does not belong in my time perception so I ditched it. Then googling, I found Foxit deb package, which shows fine: but I'd like to use something else if possible on Linux system I did not try to install Adobe Reader as I understand it's bloated and slow program, and I felt nostalgic towards SumatraPDF which I use on my Windows 7 OS. I guess there is no hope for such slick PDF viewer on Linux, as I googled as said, but knowing that SumatraPDF's PDF engine is MuPDF, I just feel sorry that developers prefer only Windows version I'm curious which program, experienced Debian users find appropriate for viewing PDF files

My question aims to be generic, both for Windows and Linux. Something useful should be locking the laptop when closing the lid (Win + L in windows), or running expensive processes such as antivirus analysis etc. without doing it manually before closing the lid.

I know this happens when I close the lid rather than open it judging by the time the clock is locked at. The cursor will move around on the screen, but noting will react to it in any way. Other services such as FTP and Samba still work just fine when the computer is "locked down". Without more details to why the problem is occurring, I have no idea what to search for or where to get started solving the problem.
