Software :: Virtualbox Locks Laptop When I Try To Install Windows Xp / Fix It?

May 30, 2010

I have a dell computer that runs kubuntu very nicely. Virtualbox runs in it great and i installed windows xp in a breeze.

My dell laptop however freezes up when i try to boot my windows install cd. I'm running kubuntu on it as well (both run 10.04) and both were just freshly installed with kubuntu.

I just can't boot the cd for some reason. Laptop totally locks up and you have to press the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off.

It's an amd turion 64 x2 dual core processor in my laptop, whereas my desktop is an intel e5200 cpu. That's the only thing i can think of that might require special settings or something in virtualbox. I've played around with all the cpu settings in virtualbox, but every single time, it totally locks up the computer.

Ubuntu :: Windows Licenses - Wipe The Disk, Install Lucid, And Run Windows In Virtualbox?

Sep 28, 2010

Background: I'm a 20+ year Mac user, switched four years ago to Linux.I have NO experience with Windows to speak of. Whenever I've gotten a new box, it's either been home-built or a Mac.Now I have a new Acer Aspire AS7551 laptop, and although I have not yet booted into Windows, it comes with a Windows 7 Home Premium license. I've been running it with Ubuntu 10.04 off a flash drive and everything works perfectly.

What I want to do: I want to wipe the disk, install Lucid, and run Windows in Virtualbox (for the sole purpose of watching some Netflix and learning a little bit about Windows 7). For the purpose of this question, please accept that I DO NOT want to dual boot. The problem: From what I can find, I can't use the "recovery discs" that came with my laptop to create a virtual machine. This is confusing, because it seems like I paid for a legitimate Windows license for use with this laptop.

Questions:

1. Would MS exchange my recovery discs for a regular install disc to go with my license code if I explained this to them?

2. If not, is there a source for Windows ISOs that I can safely use with my license? (I am aware that the legitimacy of that approach is questionable, but I am quite comfortable with the ethics since I paid for Windows 7, own the license, and only want to use it on the same computer.

3.If not,is there any way in heck I can use my recovery disc to create something Virtualbox can work with?

4. If not, how are all of you people getting your Windows virtual machines going??

(I have read that Acer is a major hassle to get a refund from for the "Windows tax" so I might as well be able to use it--this is MS' chance to win over a fan if only they will let me!)

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Locks Up After Upgrade To 10.04

May 1, 2010

I upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 via Update Manager. Upon reboot after the upgrade, I only got as far as the log-on sound and the laptop locked up. Even the power button was unresponsive, so I had to unplug the laptop and let the battery run out to get the thing turned off. I then tried doing a clean install from the CD, but got the same lock-up problem afterwards. I finally had to do a clean reinstallation of 9.10. I am using a Sony PCG-GRT240G Notebook. Are there any steps I can take to get 10.04 to work flawlessly? To get 9.10 to work flawlessly, all I had to do was boot with the noapic parameter.

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Runs So Hot Sometimes Gets Sluggish And Locks Up

Feb 19, 2011

Since support for 8.04 LTS will be ending soon, I decided to move up to 10.04 LTS. On my old Thinkpad A20m laptop, the install went well, and everything seemed to work except the middle trackpoint button. Fixed that easily by editing a conf file. Then I began to notice some problems; all power management options (suspend, idle timers, etc) have no effect. I checked the startup logs and it seems that ACPI was not loading due to my aged bios (yes it's the newest version available). I tried using acpi=force in the boot options, and viola: power management is working. But that made two other problems crop up.

Problem 2: Since using acpi=force, the laptop runs so hot it sometimes gets sluggish and locks up. I tried installing "thinkfan" from
the ubuntu repositories to have some way of easily changing the fan behavior(which I believe relies on ACPI in some fashion). No luck there. ACPI seems to not see my fan at all, and it only kicks on when the bios high temp failsafe is tripped. I should also mention I am using Xubuntu (for the lighter desktop). I'm still kind of an Ubuntu-noob, so I wasn't sure what other info to post.

OpenSUSE Install :: VirtualBox, Use It To Run Windows?

Feb 25, 2010

openSUSE, just installed 11.2 some days ago and have several problems with kernel 2.6.31 and my hardware, i was wondering if there is a way to upgrade it to version 2.6.32... that i know i dont have any problems with it.The problems that i have is with my ath9x driver, iv'e experience it before with other distros and the same kernel (2.6.31)Another question i have is about VirtualBox, i use it to run windows, and i'm amazed of the lack of speed and performance i have in openSUSE, i dont know if it's because i'm doing something wrong, quite possible since i'm not familiar with the -suse way- of using linux... i read the wiki about virtualbox made all that it's said (used OSE and non-OSE) and nothing changed... it's unusable. i used to use it in other distros with no problems, but in suse i have alot of issues.

apart from all the issues i have concerning speed and performance in openSUSE it's worth of a try.hope that configuring it better will speed up and increase performance.btw, i have a amd athlon x2 2.1ghz, ati radeon hd3200 using fglrx module and 4gb of ram.

Software :: VirtualBox 2.1 On Fedora 64-bit Won't Install Windows 7 Beta 64-bit

Jan 10, 2009

I just downloaded the Windows 7 Public Beta 64-bit. I am running Fedora 10 64-bit with VirtualBox 64-bit version.

When I try to install Win7 from the .iso, I get an error that says: "Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode."

This is bogus because VT-x is enabled in VirtualBox for this vm.

Has anyone installed 64-bit Vista (and/or the Win7 beta) with VirtualBox successfully?

Ubuntu Networking :: Laptop Locks Hard On Login Screen If No Ethernet Cable Plugged In

Jul 15, 2011

Acer 5250-BZ475 laptop, fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. Boots up beautifully as long as an ethernet cable is plugged in. Otherwise, I get to the login screen and have just enough time to start typing in my password before the entire system hangs hard - no mouse, no keyboard, can't even get to a terminal, nothing. Have to hard power off the machine.

It seems to be a problem with the wireless card trying to initialize, but there doesn't seem to be a bios option to disable wireless on this laptop, so I'm a bit at a loss as to how to fix this problem. By the way, wireless works fine if I boot up with a cable connected - I can see all the wireless access points in my area no problem. I just can't boot without a wired connection, which makes my laptop more or less useless when I'm away from home with it.

CentOS 5 :: X Windows Extremely Dim Screen On Laptop After 5.5 X64 Install

Jun 4, 2010

I've got the latest CENTOS v5.5 (disk 1 of 2) x86_64 that I've fully installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 1749 laptop (less than 30 days old). I specifically tested the media at the beginning of the install, and it was good. I'd also verified the md5sum before burning it to disc. During installation from the DVD the X Windows GUI won't appear brightly lit and easliy viewable, the screen remains (seemingly -- more on this in a moment) blank. I experienced this when hitting enter at the install boot prompt. After a subsequent text-based install (which went fine), from runlevel 3, I ensured the X Windows group was fully installed, and tried "startx". Same blank (dim!) screen behavior.

Now the seemingly blank screen has a weird twist. In changing the light in my work room (for other reasons) I noticed that there was a dim, barely visible X desktop on the screen. It is extremely faint, most definitely unusable, cannot see anything clearly enough to make out setting or try to change anything. Unable to see any mouse movement, etc... Suprisingly, a flashlight helps to make out bits and pieces, though nowhere near enough to be usable. Killing X by any method doesn't bring back the brightness, though the console is usable again as such (i.e. reboot works). I've tried the <Ctrl><Alt><F2> and the like as part of the troubleshooting, it works funcionally, but doesn't return the (normal?) screen brightness along the way.

The system came from Dell with Micro$loth Windoze 7 x64 bit and operated normal (well, as normal as Windoze can). When system-config-display is ran from the commandline, the screen clears and brings up that utility. I can point a flashlight at the screen and see some elements of what looks like a functional/working utility. I cannot visually discern the mouse to try and select anything. I've floated around the screen a lot, but haven't seen anything I can leverage to make a change to the screen/monitor being used. I believe the video is an integrated (into the CPU) graphics chip/card/whatever.

P.S. System specific details are below.

lspci gives the following output:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 02)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02 )
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 06)

Ubuntu Installation :: Can No Longer Install Windows On My Laptop / Solve This?

Jul 7, 2010

Synopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.

What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:

Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.

So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.

Installation :: Use XEN Or VirtualBox To Host Windows 7 On It Or It On Windows 7?

May 17, 2010

Should I use XEN or VirtualBox to host linux on windows 7 or windows 7 on linux? Since I've read about the problems of reading/writing NTFS disks with linux usnig the Linux NTFS driver, I thought it would be better to host windows on linux. I think the problem is that you never can be sure if the linux NTFS driver is going to corrupt your disk because Microsoft does not publish the format for linux developers.

By running windows on linux, I could read and write EXT3 from windows. I think there are EXT3 drivers for windows. Then I got to thinking: If I am running Linux on Windows, am I going to be using SAMBA or the linux NTFS driver? I think I'm going to be using SAMBA to read and write the linux partitions -- correct? Are there other considerations when deciding to host linux on windows or windows on linux? I'm going to using both the linux and windows partitions for software development with java/eclipse and various databases including oracle.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Crash - Either Locks Up Or The Screen Goes Black

Feb 8, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for about a year or so and have never had any problems installing it up until now.

I can boot from live CD for 9.10, but if at any point I attempt to install it to my hardrive, it either locks up or the screen goes black. Sometimes I'm able to start the installer, but the screen will go blank. The most progress I've been able to make on the install was up to 98% before it locked up, every other time I've gotten a blank screen or a lock up around 40-60%. After a hard reboot I get an error that reads "DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

This problem doesn't only occur with 9.10, but with every other linux distro I've tried on it. My first attempt was with Ubuntu Studio, but I got similar errors. I've searched literally for hours and have found nary a solution that even comes close to solving my problem. using HP Pavilion a404x desktop

Networking :: Realtek Rtl8192u Driver Locks Up System (Puppy 4.3.0, Fresh Install)?

Jan 20, 2010

I've got a Puppy system running version 4.3.0 that I'm trying to get on the home network. I'm using a D-Link DWA-130 (H/W revision C), which has a Realtek RTL8192U chipset. I got the drivers off of D-Link's website, and they compiled and installed just fine, but when either a) I try to connect to the network, or b) while I'm browsing the web, the system locks up completely. No mouse, no keyboard, no Ctrl-Alt-Bksp to get out of X, nothing.

I'll outline my steps: Install Puppy using a "Full" HDD install (not "Frugal"). Copy the "devx_430.sfs" file (which I got from the Puppy website) from a thumb drive to the "my-documents" folder (although the exact location proabably doesn't matter). Mount it, cd to the mounted directory and execute "cp -a --remove-destination ./* /" and "sync". Copy the kernel source for 2.6.30.5 ("kernel_src-2.6.30.5-patched.sfs4.sfs") to the same directory. Mount it and execute the same commands as before. Copy the folder containing the RTL8192U drivers ("rtl8192u_linux_2.6.0006.1031.2008") to the root directory (i.e. "/"). cd to the folder in the terminal and run "make", "make install".Reboot the machine. Set up networking using the Puppy Internet Connection Wizard. HERE'S WHERE IT SCREWS UP: It connects, but after a while (e.g. just after logging into LQ through it, as a test) it freezes the entire system.

I have to do a hard reboot ("panic button"), then a soft reboot (for some odd reason the usb module won't load after a hard reboot, so the mouse won't work) to get the system working again, only to have it lock up again once it connects to the network.

Are these drivers broken? Outdated? Is there anything I can do to fix this? EDIT: I should add that this only occurs when the adapter is plugged in. If I boot the system with it unplugged, it works fine (probably because it never loads the kernel module).
