Ubuntu :: Why The "Do Nothing" Option When Closing The Laptop Lid Has Disappeared From V10
Aug 31, 2010
I wonder why the "Do Nothing" option when closing the laptop lid has disappeared from Ubuntu v10.We use Ubuntu for a network of netbooks for different artworks and have relied on this feature to keep our screens alive (when running a vga data projector), in tight spaces that don't allow for the netbook lids to be open.
I installed kde and xfce to try them out (explained further in my other threads - almost a prequel to this if you like) and they were fine and dandy. Decided I wanted to lose xfce and did that (as explained in said previous threads) via synaptics. However, not only did it get rid of xubuntu, it got rid of the option to loggin on kubuntu as well (which I didn't want to do - I decided I wanted to keep kubuntu). I'm pretty sure that kde is still here on my computer because when I boot my computer with ubuntu, I get the kubuntu loading screen with blue background. I want to be able to log in with kde but I don't have the option at loggin.
Since my laptop went back to DELL to be repaired closing the lid does nothing. It used to put the laptop into suspend. I even tried on my windows partition and closing it still does nothing. I suspected that the switch(?) that controls this is not sending any data to the laptop - is there away to see if any input is being received when the lid is closed? Or does anyone have any other thoughts on what might be at fault?
I recently upgraded my laptop from Lucid to Meerkat 10.10. Everything was fine until I closed my laptop cover. In "suspend" , I can't come back. I get a black screen with a frozen cursor, and I have to reboot. Not a good situation with a laptop. Is there anything I can do? I prefer Meerkat to Lucid for my laptop except for this one area.
since I've upgraded to 11.04 on my Dell Latitude E6400, every time I close the lid and open it again, Ubuntu fires up but the screen itself is totally messed up, it's just random patterns all over the screen. The laptop is locked, so I can type in my password, hit enter, and once I'm logged in again the screen is perfectly fine, so the system itself works, only the display is the problem
Gnome (or XORG, I'm not sure which name to give it) freezes up not always, but about once every 24 hours after I close the laptop's cover/lid. I know this happens when I close the lid rather than open it judging by the time the clock is locked at. The cursor will move around on the screen, but noting will react to it in any way. Other services such as FTP and Samba still work just fine when the computer is "locked down". Without more details to why the problem is occurring, I have no idea what to search for or where to get started solving the problem. I have attached the XORG logs (found in var/log) in case they are of any use.
Whenever I use the function hibernate or sleep - or just generally close my lid on my laptop, my laptop displays a black screen when I open the lid again - though it is turned on.
Basically, it hibernates/sleeps the laptop when I close the lid. When I open the lid though, it turns on the laptop, but brings me a black screen.
I've done a new 10.04 installation and downloaded CCSM but I can't find the option to turn the rotating cube (all options present and correct) into a rotating sphere.Have I just forgotten to download some additional plugins or similar?
I could effortlessly set my output in Sound Preferences to be Analog 5.1. Now I just discovered that this option has disappeared, for no apparent reason. I haven't been messing around with any settings, other than installing updates as they've been rolled out. Would be nice to have 5.1 surround back as an option.
I'm wondering if there is any way to execute a program, run some command or anything else when closing the laptop's lid. My question aims to be generic, both for Windows and Linux. Something useful should be locking the laptop when closing the lid (Win + L in windows), or running expensive processes such as antivirus analysis etc. without doing it manually before closing the lid.
I have a Dell Latitude D505. I installed Squeeze on 12 November 2011 from the weekly DVD. I install updates every day, when available. My kernel: 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Thu Nov 25 18:43:34 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
Everything is working fine except the button that is pressed when I close my lid. Hibernate works, Suspend works, blank screen works. user is member of the group "powerdev". I really thought thread "closing-laptop-lid-renders-computer-unusable-786822" would bring me a solution. When I close my lid my screens turns black with my mouse cursor on it. Connections with ssh are broken. Keyboard is dead, mouse pad too. It looks like it never start any software it just hangs immediately. I cant find anything in my logs.
It looks like something must've slipped the attention of Ubuntu developers as in the previous LTS version laptop suspension after closing the lid worked perfectly fine for me (Dell Latitude D820) while after upgrading to Meerkat it doesn't work any more....well sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't - it behaves sort of like a weather in UK/Ireland ...anyway...is there more information I could provide to you guys or is there something you could give me to point me to the right direction ?
When I close my laptop and open it the screen become grey and blotchy with almost an argyle pattern. This has only started happening after I configured the usb ports to work in my VM. My startup screen also says something about a usb problem, and S for skip and M to manually fix it but I have had no problems with my usb. Oh except for my computer won't start
I am using a old laptop as a server now and its running great! I would like to disable sleep/hibernation when I close the lid (i would prefer the screen still shut off if possible) ...
This has to be done via command line because I don't use a gui ...
I have an odd problem in that my wireless connection is okay until I close the laptop. When I open it back up, I'm unable to reconnect. This problem first occurred after upgrading to 9.10. I can reconnect after restarting. I tried several things before breaking down and reinstalling 9.04. After installing 9.04, everything works great. Any suggestions on what is going on before I try upgrading to 9.10 again? I have a Dell D600.
I have copied /usr/share/gnome-shell/themes/* to ~/.themes/myShell/gnome-shell and also the folders from Adawita and my customisations etc.
When I look in the overview - themes I can select my theme however when i reload the shell the themes option has disappeared and i get this error in looking glass:
why I get this?
Also if I load gnome-tweak-tool and select another theme, move my custom folder out of ~/.themes and reload the shell I get the themeselector loading properly again.
I am currently running squeeze with the 2.6.32-trunk amd64 kernel.
If I close the laptop lid the screen will not turn back on and the laptop becomes unresponsive. The only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button down until it dies.
My Suspend and Hibernate buttons disappeared on my laptop. And i can't find a way to restore that I heard that i could restore them with Ubuntu tweak but i can't find how.
Our laptop all of a sudden will not connect with our usual wifi network connection which has disappeared & now mysteriously shows dd-wrt . It shows an internet connection has been establihed with dd-wrt but does not work.
I used to have the options "Add to Desktop" and "Add to Panel" when I right clicked on any icon in my KDE launcher menu. Now I only have "Add to Favorites".Ubuntu 11.04 Linux alienware 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:24 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux KDE: 4.6.2 (4.6.2)
I had the Wireless Broadband working. It stopped working after I closed the laptop (suspend). Also the wifi will not connect until reboot. Now the entry for the Wireless Broadband is gone, and the tab for it is greyed out as well.I would be happy to submit this as a bug and assist with the debugging process.
I switched my girlfriend laptop from windows 7 to Kubuntu 9.4, then upgraded to karmic koala. I was able to, through the hardware manager, install a software modem driver, and a firmware unwrapper driver for her broadcom 4.X series wireless adapter. Whenever I attempted to install the broadcom 4.1, 4.2. ect driver itself a package update would fail, but wireless functionality still worked nonetheless. My girlfriend has a TX1000 HP laptop, similar to this one:[URL]..Product number in the bios is GA648UA#ABA System Board ID is 30BF
The wireless drivers she needs are proprietary. This worked for a while, although seemingly at random her wireless would go out, and her analog sound driver for her Nvidia chipsets would too. Usually logging out of the KDE environment and back in fixed the issue. Now wireless is completely gone; using a hard ethernet core to the router still works. Even connected to the internet, the proprietary drivers that used to be available in the hardware manager aren't there anymore. Right before the driver disappeared, I updated the system with all the latest round of updates, and installed the base package and some plugins for VLC. I don't know how to role back packages to see if an update killed the wireless, I uninstalled the VLC software but that didn't help.
Wireless is checked enabled on my taskbar, and I have checked my bios and haven't found any setting to disable the wireless adapter. Anything networking related has been enabled. At this point I am rather frustrated with the stability of Kubuntu overall and would prefer a hard solution that will permanently fix the problem.
I installed Maverick with auto login. One could undo this by reinstalling I suppose, but is there an easier way to get back to the standard form of login?Hopefully that will cause my default key ring to unlock correctly.
when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.
We do use kickstart configuration file to customize the CentOS installation. In the partitioning screen, I do see a check box for encryption (encrypting the disk blocks).
I want to remove this checkbox in my kickstart configuration file. What is the option to use to get rid of this checkbox.
Ubuntu Server 9.10I want to set up my dhcp server to also be my DNS server so do I skip these lines or point them at the same server that the config file is on?
When I close the lid on my Dell Mini 9 (Ubuntu 10.04 UNR) the sysgtem freezes. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? That didn't happen with 9.04 UNR.
