since upgrading my desktop I've had trouble getting my old sound blaster audigy working. I've disabled the motherboard's on board sound in the bios. My new desktop is built around the Intel i7-2600K. I have a suspicion that maybe linux isn't playing nice with the pci-e to pci bridge that has replaced native pci support but I have no evidence of this. The sound card works fine in windows. I know sound is a recurring issue around here, but I can't find any posts/FAQs that address my particular problem.
Here it goes: When I first installed ALSA, I unsurprisingly had no sound. OK, no big deal, I'll just un-install and re-install ALSA and see if that helps. No, instead ALSA won't even recognize my card.

I have installed xubuntu version 10. My sound card is a Yamaha dS-1S, and seems to be properly configured. Alsa mixer doesn't indicates any error. However, I can't manage to get any sound. I have checked that jacks are correctly plugged.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba laptop and Toshiba netbook (both Intel chipsets). Laptop - Squeeze install gave me the 2.6.32 kernel and sound only worked thru headphones but not the speakers. Later on, I compiled kernel 2.6.36.1 (and just imported .config from original kernel) and sound WORKED perfectly. I had a few other errors ("address space collision" / PM error) so recently I compiled kernel 2.6.38, which solved other hardware issues but sound is back to original problem (works thru headphones but not thru speakers). I even installed the "backports" kernel (2.6.38.4) and it didn't make a difference.
Netbook - Did exact same things as above but no matter what, the sound never worked on it... same issue (sound in headphones.. no sound in speakers) So, how do I "reverse-engineer" the laptop working sound install with kernel 3.6.36.1 and make it work with later kernel (nothing... and I've tried about 30+ thread suggestions makes the sound cards work properly.. other than kernel 2.6.36.1)

I've had these problems before intermittently and it was working until I rebooted recently. I've also attached my yum log if there was something updated that affected it.
I can not set default sound card for alsa. It detects my sound card and I can play audio with xmms when I config that to use alsa and my intel sound card, but other applications which use default alsa sound card, and also pulse audio, can not play any sound.

Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I have a TV tuner card with its output connected to the CD in of an integrated sound card. Video is OK, and the sound also gets thorough (to the line out) when running xawtv, for example. sound card is working well inside SuSE and everything is ok there. But when I install Windows 7 or XP inside Xen Virtualization software, I can't use sound card and Windows is unable to find any sound hardware.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLaptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'
I am using a couple of Debian Distro (Sid and Lenny) add some Ubuntu into the mix. I made the switch because I was amazed and satisfied with Debian --> once installed, everything works. For me that's okay for o so many years now. I don't question a lot because it just works and I do my job on it satisfactorily. Namely programming the LAMP style programming. Lately I have been using Debian to communicate over the internet -- using Skype and Pidgin and other such things, not to mention listening to music, watching movies, just using the default applications when I originally install Debian.
Along the way, I need to configure something -- that is desktop related -- like the screen resolution of a new LCD monitor replacing the old one and such. Now about my sound -- I'm not touching it because it is working. But that is not the case always. Now I have a constant error -- it is irritating. Rhythmbox don't make a sound always when I have open a web browser (iceweasel, chrome, epiphany) and a site with multimedia object on it -- like a video or something. So how do I correct this? How do I know, too what I am using -- ALSA or Pulseaudio?
So I've got a new system on which I had to re-install Debian, and I've been trying to fix the sound today, but it doesn't seem to work... I've kept the same ALSA configuration (except a minor adjustment to the card number as this system appears to have two cards instead of one), but it doesn't seem to work as expected. I got this weird error while running an app that uses ALSA:

View 8 Replies View RelatedIn the process of trying to get the softmodem working, I finally attached speakers to this laptop and tried to play some sounds. Nothing but silence. Both the KDE system sounds and a stand-alone player (noatun) produce nothing. No error messages that I can find, either. (That might explain why the softmodem is dead, too...) I've run alsaconf several times, and even uninstalled and reinstalled ALSA. It thinks it is working, but is not. What sorts of things do I need to check to find where it isn't working?
Info: The motherboard is a FIC 3500W with the VIA P4M800 integrated chipset. This includes the VIA 8237 sound system, which is what ALSA detects and tries to use. The machine also has a Realtek ALC655 but I don't see any drivers for that in the lsmod output, so this is a possible source of the trouble.
I decided to break free from the horrible life of a windows vista user. I like my new debian (Wheezy) installation and everything worked fine so far. Now I stumbled upon a huge problem. When I want startup and login into my gnome installation the first application I open gets to play sound and others after that just don't work. I looked endlessly on google but in my understanding the problem is within the ALSA driver.

Gnome volume control shows that HDA Intel(Alsa mixer) is selected and as a default the speaker is muted, if I unmute it, an infinite loop-like sound plays and no application seems to have access to the sound, I believe the correct module is installed by default, and the webcam does not work as well. I'm using debian squeeze i386.

I recently changed from Gentoo to Debian Squeeze. All went fine but I have an ALSA issue. I have an AMD Athlon II X4 board with a Nvidia (Realtek) sound chip. After installing I got a lot of "no such device" errors, so I installed the Realtek driver the Debian way and the errors vanished. I could successful run alsactl init and alsamixer.
At this point there is no sound neither in games nor system. alsaplay says (on the screen) that it is playing a wav file but there is no sound. My test ''dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/dsp'' complains "/dev/dsp : no such file or directory". Well, all clear. modprobing the snd-*-oss modules brings sound alive but I have to do this after every restart. I have no clue how to make this persistent the Debian way.

I have recently acquired a Lenovo Q150 machine and attempting to use it as a HTPC. I've been reading that with this platform a newer kernel is required to make wireless, sound and a few other tweaks work correctly--so I bumped up to testing repositories to upgrade to the 2.6.38 kernel.[URL]...
The audio on this device has been more than a pain. I'm currently using XBMC to play media on this device and after setting the outputs to custom: plughw:1,9 sound is played correctly. I found this out by using alsamixer, selecting the sound card with the F6 key (Nvidia 1) unmutting all outputs, quiting, and running speaker-test -D plughw:1,X where X is the sub-device from the output of aplay -l until sound could be heard from the receiver.
Now my problem is that applications like mplayer, and iceweasel won't output any sound. I'd prefer not to use the optical out on the device and would like to send sound over HDMI. Has anyone had any luck getting it to work as it should?
I've also installed pulseaudio, not too sure if this is really needed. I've also used module assistant before upgrading to compile alsa from source, it worked but i just decided to upgrade the kernel instead of dealing with m-a every time an update comes through. Trying to find a good solution to start flirting with open source i have come across ubuntu. Searched a lot in the web and found that the latest yet easiest to noobs is 10.10.3 days have passed since i have started trying ti set it up i have come across A LOT of problems due to my noobity. 1st of all yet solved in the way was an issue with my gfx card.I have the GT X 285 and every time i log in to my os i have ti resize the desktop cuz it never stays as it should. 2nd and most serious , i cant find a way to set up my sound card. I have the Creative SoundBlaste XFi Platinum.I have found tons of walkthroughs but none worked and i feel i have messed up the sound drivers system really bad. I also have an on board soundcard but i cant enable that one as well. My MB is Gigabyte P55 UD6 LGA 1156.
