Debian :: Gnome Time GUI No Longer Has The Ability To Control NTP?

Feb 14, 2011

I've installed Squeeze on my two machines and now I discover that the Gnome Time GUI no longer has the ability to control NTP. Did they move the NTP GUI somewhere else or did we go backwards on this one?

Debian Hardware :: Wheezy 7.8 With LXDE Desktop - Task Bar Volume Control No Longer Functions

Feb 11, 2015

Running Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.

I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.

Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

* more or less solved. still not exactly what I want but it works, mostly.

Debian Multimedia :: Jessie Gnome-xrandr No Longer Works

that I could run (twice in a row, it needed) to allow the scroling of the screen to see the bottom 1/4.

This no longer works.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: (11.2 Gnome) VLC Ability To Use Qt Broken

May 23, 2010

I'm having issues getting VLC to work again (openSuSE 11.2 GNOME). It used to work fine, but I think I broke its ability to use Qt when I was attempting to upgrade it and install some dev tools for something I wanted to try. When I run VLC, I get these errors:

[0x81b3090] main generic error: no dialogs provider module matched "any"
[0x806f758] skins2 interface error: no suitable dialogs provider found (hint: compile the qt4 plugin, and make sure it is loaded properly)
[0x806f758] skins2 interface: skin: subX author: Martin Poehlmann

From what I can tell, the Qt4 plugin is in the correct location (/usr/lib/vlc/gui/libqt4_plugin.so), so I'm not sure what's causing it to fail. As far as I can tell, it's some conflict among Qt packages between existing ones and ones that I tried to upgrade. Is there a way to get a list of all qt packages that come installed by default and their versions so I can attempt to revert back to it?

Debian Multimedia :: Control GNOME Tracker For External Hard Disk

Jun 10, 2015

I would like some info regarding an external backup hard drive I use. This carries a lot of text and sound files that I need frequent access to, and I would like to be able to quickly search on that drive using the standard GNOME tracker search facilities. The drive is connected via USB and mounted to /media/hhrutz/Mnemo2.

I have the following questions:

- the database is maintained on my laptop's harddrive in $HOME/.cache/tracker and $HOME/.local/share/tracker/data, correct?- therefore, it would not be a problem for the tracker to update its data if I decided to mount the harddrive in read-only mode?- is it possible to get an overview about the size of the database?- do I have to keep the button "Include removable media" in the "Indexing Preferences" checked?

In other words, is this harddrive understood as a removable media?- if so, can I exempt this drive from "Garbage Collection". That is, I generally do _not_ want to index for example USB thumb drives and such, so I use the default 3-days expiry settings. Does that mean, all the gathered data from my backup harddrive will be gone if I don't connect that drive every two days? Can I prevent that? Because the indexing takes extremely long

I also notice that while the tracker is spinning my harddisk, it doesn't ever seem to advance. It stays at "1%":

> 10 Jun 2015, 18:03:25: 1% File System - Crawling recursively directory 'file:///media/hhrutz/Mnemo2'

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome Shell Slows Down Over Time

Jun 6, 2015

I find gnome-shell 3.14.2 becomes slugish after several days of use. This manifests in short delays on window functions, such as closing a window or opening a new one. Restarting gnome shell fixes it.I thought of trying to take a stack trace during the delay, but found 2 issues:

1) debian doesn't have gstack/pstack package ...?
2) attaching a debugger to gnome shell from gnome shell hangs it (duh) , which means I can't type the "bt" command

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 2.6.31-18 Sound Control Applet No Longer Appears In Panel

Feb 2, 2010

Since I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.31-18 I have been experiencing problems with my sound. 2.6.31-18 sound problems with nvidia MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78SThe laptop speakers no longer shut off when plugging in headphones. My sound control applet no longer appears in the panel. When launching a sound application sound starts off real loud for a second and then changes to much quieter. I have had this laptop since Hardy with never any sound issues. I do not know if it is the kernel upgrade or the accompanying backports modules. Could be neither for all I know and it just started around that time and is a coincidence.

Here is what was installed:
Installed the following packages:

Debian :: Sound Not Card Configured - Error 'Volume Control Did Not Find Any Elements And/or Devices To Control" - Driver

Feb 8, 2011

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.

Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

General :: Current Time - File Path No Longer Valid

Aug 21, 2011

I am reading about jiffies in linux kernel. In one of the related example in the book Linux Device Driver, the author use
head -8 /proc/currentime
to print out some time information.

However this file is not present in my linux installation (kernel: 2.6.32-131.6.1.el6.x86_64). Why is it the case? Is it because the file path is no longer valid, or it is a distribution feature thing? It is not present in OSX too. What would be an equivalent in OSX?

Ubuntu :: Suddenly Boot Time Got Longer - With BootChart Results

Jun 30, 2010

The thing I love most about 10.04 has been the boot times. Now, sadly that is gone for me... Suddenly it takes longer to boot. With almost no new apps installed and I have a separate disk for music/videos and such. Also, removed most of startup-applications!

Before, when the ubuntu logo showed the dots didn't even complete a whole lap, and...I was in the desktop... Now it does a couple rounds before eventually getting to the desktop.

Nothing extremely slow, but still noticable!..

Created a bootchart, but i couldn't see anything extraordinary.. maybe you guys can?

Programming :: QSplashScreen - Extend Loading Time To Display Splash For Longer?

Apr 7, 2011

One requirement of a project I am currently working on (for Maemo) is that the Qt application displays a QSplashScreen when it loads.

My issue is that the application is fairly small and I have written it to load components etc as they are required rather than at start-up. This has lead to quick start up times (which, in a perfect world is what we all strive for!)

How would I intentionally delay the start-up time so that the splash shows for longer?

I have investigated

Quote:

QTimer:: oneShot() (Space added to prevent smiley)

however, its prototype dictates that it be connected to a slot. I am running this QSplashScreen from inside main so this is neither needed nor feasible.

What is the best way to essentially do this:

Code:
Display Splash
Timer for 3 seconds
Close Splash
Display mainWindow

I do not want to use native system calls such as sleep() and would instead rather a Qt based solution.

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Get Tvtime To Work Because /dev/mixer Is No Longer Created In 10.10 So No Volume Control From Within Tvtime

Oct 5, 2010

I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. The issue that I'm having is that I have 4 devices that show up as /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1,/dev/mixer2 and /dev/mixer3. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.

whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome No Longer Starts After Update?

Jan 21, 2011

since the last SuSE online update (last Wednesday?) the X server no longer starts on our notebook (ATI HD 4200) so we only have the consoles available, which limits the WAF heavily . We were using SuSE 11.3 with the Gnome desktop for about one months and it worked smoothly, but since the update (which included a kernel update to 2.6.34.7-0.7) the X server tries to start 5 times and then gives up. All logfiles end with:

Code:
...
[ 13.899] Segmentation fault at address 0x3c
[ 13.899]
Fatal server error:

[Code]....

I used the ati driver ati-fglrxG02-kmp-desktop, version 8.762_k2.6.34.0_12-31.1 from the ATI Suse repository. To solve the problem I already switched to the Xorg driver which lead to a color distorted display but no segmentation fault. But I'd like to get the ati driver running again.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Volume Control In GNOME?

Nov 14, 2009

I normally run KDE, but installed GNOME as well on my netbook (running openSUSE 11.2) to try out. However, I noticed there is no longer any volume control applet. The GNOME panel control is labeled 'deprecated', and the volue Fn keys, which work fine in KDE, do not work at all. I tried launching the PulseAudio Volume Control app, but it gives me a "Connection Failed: Connection Refused error". I still have sound, and I can adjust the volumes in alsamixer, but is rather inconvinient. What is the "right way" to adjust volumes in 11.2's GNOME?

General :: Restore The Gnome Panel Volume Control In 10.04?

May 25, 2010

I use alsa, and I don't have a volume control applet on my Gnome Panel. When I right click and select "add to panel", there is nothing that has to do with "sound", "audio" or "volume" in the list, and the "Indicator Applet" or "Indicator Applet Session" things have no volume controls, or properties that would let you enable any sort of volume control.

How can I get a volume control in Ubuntu, so I don't have to run aumix in a terminal or something? I've got the thing working now. But does anyone know why the new, fancy "Indicator Applet" volume control doesn't appear? The Gnome Volume Control Applet isn't as nicely featured, although it actually works.

I've been using Linux since Redhat 5, it's beyond me why these sorts of problems are still around. Someone should just put a damn "Volume Control" element in the list of things to add to the panel, even if it doesn't work, perhaps showing an error message.
