All of a sudden I can no longer control the default size of my gnome terminal windows. The option is just gone from the preference window. If I look in gconf-editor my old values are still there but they are ignored.
View 7 RepliesIs there a way to default volume to 100% in the terminal with gnome-volume-control-applet or any other program? I am setting up a dedicated Zsnes machine which boots into Fluxbox but the volume is muted by default. There isn't a man page for gnome-volume-control-applet.
When I log into Gnome the volume is set to 100%, but Fluxbox is always set to mute.
I've installed Squeeze on my two machines and now I discover that the Gnome Time GUI no longer has the ability to control NTP. Did they move the NTP GUI somewhere else or did we go backwards on this one?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter updating/upgrading my packages this morning, the terminal profile preferences screen (Edit > Profile Preferences) no longer had the option at the bottom for setting the default terminal size. This is a problem because the default size went from the 132x43 I had set it to down to 80x24. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on three machines and had this problem on all of them. After noticing the problem on the first machine, I checked the option screens of the other machines before upgrading. The default size option was there before the upgrades, but after upgrading, it was gone.

It's almost surely gnome-terminal or gnome-terminal-data, but I included the full list just in case. What are my options for fixing this? Should I try rolling back the upgrade? Should I not bother with that and just try setting the default terminal size through other means?

After running an update this morning, my terminal comes up in the install default size. Using the preferences dialog, I cannot find the control to set the default width. Has it been removed? I hope I'm looking in the wrong place, but I have a chilling feeling that it's been dropped or perhaps just accidentally commented out.

Nor does there appear to be any option in Gnome Terminal Profile Preferences (other than to run something other than the shell when starting Terminal). Anyone know how make this modification so Gnome Terminal will always start in the same size and position?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using the Gnome desktop in openSUSE 11.3. I've set the "Command" to gnome-terminal --geometry=80x58 for the Gnome terminal in its Launcher Properties. This opens a terminal of the size I want every time I click it. However, when I right-click the desktop and click "open in terminal" it opens a terminal of a much smaller size and I can't figure out how to correct this. The same thing happens when I click:
File->Open Terminal from a terminal window, and also when
I click File->Open in Terminal from from the File Browser.
Why am I getting a much smaller window and how to fix?
My laptop has a small flickering area at the bottom of the screen, about 1 cm high. It's a hardware problem.It's very annoying but I can just put a bit of dark paper over it. I would like to change the ubuntu (10.04) defaults so that the bottom of the screen is never used - I can change some windows, but is there a global way to stop all windows, menus etc from using that lower area
View 6 Replies View Relatedi'm not sure for using the correct channel here but i hope someone out there can answer my little questions. 1st in older version i was able to change the settings of the terminal look as the font color, background color and so on. I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Is there a way how to set up the terminal default window size?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI try to change the default character encoding in gnome-terminal. I want to use UTF8, but every gnome-terminal i start uses "ANSIX3.4-1968".
In the menu, when i go in Terminal => Set character encoding i have a list with two items:
[x] Current Locale (ANSIX3.4-1968)
[ ] Unicode (UTF-8)
I don't know why the first item appears, i have another debian box and it has only the UTF-8 encoding available. I cannot remove the first item in "add or remove" sub menu !! Probably because it is related to "current locale"

I've set up home server, which doesn't have to be as powerful as other servers, so I decided to install GUI because of applications that are alternatives to classical GUI applications in headless version requires more skill/knowledge. However, I don't want server to run GUI always at start (which gnome-desktop package does). I need some configuration in KDE/gnome/xfce (haven't decided) that doesn't start GUI after each start (e.g is required to type startx or equivalent command to start GUI)(off topic: can you also recommend good remote-administration with GUI transport ?)

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile I can find my way around most things, terminals and desktop managers are different than I remember. One of the biggest problems that I am encountering today is that when running a gnome terminal (this is Suse 10.0 enterprise), I'm getting behavior in the window that I don't want. Specifically, when I type, my typing is underlined as if something is trying to spell check my window. Further, it seems as if when running vi or less, my keystrokes are only processed by these apps when I hit 'return'. I.e. if I'm running less and want to go back a page, I'll hit b, but nothing happens until I hit 'return'.
I seem to have tracked this down to the 'input method". Right clicking in the Gnome terminal allows me to set my input method to one of a dozen values. It seems that currently, it's set to "SCIM Input Method". If I then select 'default' or 'X Input Method', apps (i.e. things like less, vi, and even the bash shell) behave as I would expect.
a) what is this SCIM input method
b) how can I make it so that it is not the default?
I've poked around various configuration files in my home directory as well as in /etc, but I can't see to find how this is set.
No Matter what I do and change in gnome-tweak-tool, the window title bar won't change to anything else, won't go smaller, even the downloaded themes won't change the bar, and I cant seem to find the needed codes in xml to change them. photo is attached to illustrate the things I need to changeI need to change their size in the first place, and maybe change them to like ambiance or whatever. i've seen many guides on the net, and It still don't find the neeeded solution

the effects aren't permanent though. I tried setting gnome-shell to be a start up application but this hasn't worked. I dont want to remove compiz or metacity before knowing if I can get gnome-shell to run by default somehow.
So, how can I get gnome-shell to be my default windows manager?
Since I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.31-18 I have been experiencing problems with my sound. 2.6.31-18 sound problems with nvidia MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78SThe laptop speakers no longer shut off when plugging in headphones. My sound control applet no longer appears in the panel. When launching a sound application sound starts off real loud for a second and then changes to much quieter. I have had this laptop since Hardy with never any sound issues. I do not know if it is the kernel upgrade or the accompanying backports modules. Could be neither for all I know and it just started around that time and is a coincidence.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi have an hp 110 mini running 10.10 laptop (not netbook. i prefer the laptop desktop). i use firefox as my default browser. i find that i must always scroll and center web pages with embedded video (e.g. videos), and even then, i may not see the entire video frame (off the page top and bottom)
i know i can "open up" the usable area of firefox with add-ons (but haven't done it yet). are there any other ways, either through ubuntu screen settings, firefox settings, or flash settings, to shrink or adjust the default video frame size on the page? or is this simply one of the limitations of a netbook i will have to deal with?
Running Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.
I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.
Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

I stopped using ubuntu for a while at 9.04 (went to mint and came back) because it was not installing properly. I thought it had aptitude in it then, but I did not have it after installing 10.10 (installed it twice it is not on either). I am just wondering why, even debian includes aptitude.
View 3 Replies View RelatedLinux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"
In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.
P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!
I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.
Ubuntu 9.04 Terminal app no longer opens; get a blank white screen.; update function will no longer run.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz CPU and I have attached a Zalman heatsink & fan to it for extra cooling. However, the default fan speed is very high and it is too loud and definitely unnecessary. So I use this program in Windows called EasyTune5 (which is for gigabyte motherboards, the brand my motherboard is) and I can set the default speed to zero or 1. There are values between 0 and 100, 100 being full speed of the fan. Setting it to a low value like 0 or 1 makes it very quite. Of course the speed of the fan goes up when the CPU heats up or is being utilized more BUT most of the times during idle, its back to being really quite.
Does ubuntu have any software that can do this? I know there are software to check the cpu temp but i need one to actually control the default fan speed.
gnome-terminal from the Debian squeeze does not use the 'default_size_columns' and 'default_size_rows' from the /apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/ folder of gconf.
