Debian Multimedia :: Gnome Shell Slows Down Over Time
Jun 6, 2015
I find gnome-shell 3.14.2 becomes slugish after several days of use. This manifests in short delays on window functions, such as closing a window or opening a new one. Restarting gnome shell fixes it.I thought of trying to take a stack trace during the delay, but found 2 issues:
1) debian doesn't have gstack/pstack package ...?
2) attaching a debugger to gnome shell from gnome shell hangs it (duh) , which means I can't type the "bt" command

Why there is too much error in every version of gnome-shell and after everything slows down after a few hours of working in gnome-shell on debian(only on debian, i'm using gnome-shell in fedora and excellent experience i had in it) some of syslog output :

I'll often run iceweasel for watching videos via flash (hulu, ....., et cetera) while working, in fedora I never noticed any performance problems, watching the video while using chrome for browsing, gedit for editing, et cetera, everything was responsive. Though, now on debian running iceweasel for the same purpose hogs memory and processor time, which slows down the responsiveness of the system as a whole, making it difficult to use other programs.I'm curious how I should go about troubleshooting this issue, and what diagnostics might help me find the solution.

I recently "upgraded" to the latest skype and now every time I open an interactive root shell, up pops skype. I can close skype then control-C in the terminal window to get the shell I want, but this is annoying to say the least. Maybe my google-foo is off, but all I can find is articles on how to run skype as root, which is no use. I've tried searching the startup files for "skype" (case independant), but so far all I can find is "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ /usr/bin/skype" in the root .bashrc which shouldn't be starting the app.
what could be causing this?
(Running Wheezy)

I'm using Squeeze, and haven't seen an update in the Debian repo for some time. Seeing as it's due for release soon (September), can we expect some updates in the near future? I had been using Gnome Shell in Ubuntu with much success, including compiling my own. These days, I cannot afford the bandwidth, and have encountered an unknown problem [URL] under Debian Squeeze. Currently, I'm experiencing a very annoying flickering issue using the repo version which I know does not exist anymore in the current gnome development. To have at least one update now before the release date would be nice to see.

I have tracker installed, and when I use "tracker-search ..." from terminal, I can find files as expected. In particular, it searches within file contents, not just the titles.
I was hoping to have similar functionality directly from gnome-shell. I've found a number of extensions to do this such as: [URL] .... but none of them work (gnome 3.14, debian Jessie).
How to set up file contents search directly from gnome in Jessie?

I've recently upgraded to gnome shell in experimental, and I like it so far. However, the window borders and themes look like how Gnome 2 did before you install gtk2-engines and some themes. Are there any themes in the repositories that I'm missing, or are they just not there yet?

Some days ago (2015-09-28) I installed Debian testing amd64. Log in as a user failed and instead of the Gnome UI there was a sad face with the text: „Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem occurred and the system can't recover.
All extensions have been disabled as a precaution. Log out“.
The relevant output of journalctl (run as root) said:
etc/gdm3/Xsession[5379]: cannot connect to brltty at :0
- /etc/gdm3/Xsession[5379]: Service 'org.kde.kaccessibleapp' does not exist.
- gnome-session[5379]: x-session-manager[5379]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-shell.desktop' killed by signal 5
- gnome-session[5379]: x-session-manager[5379]: WARNING: App 'gnome-shell.desktop' respawning too quickly
- x-session-manager[5379]: Unrecoverable failure in required component gnome-shell.desktop
[Code] ...
After some investigating, I found three work-arounds.
(1) Use gdm3-autologin: In /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf, remove the double crosses and insert own user name
AutomaticLoginEnable = true
AutomaticLogin = <own user name>
Disadvantage: Only one user can have access to the Gnome ui. If you log out, you enter the gdm3 greeter and … see above.
(2) Turn off gdm3 by running 'systemctl stop gdm3' as root, log in into a terminal as a user and run startx.
(3) Install package lightdm and make it to the standard display manager with 'dpkg-reconfigure lightdm'.
Disadvantage: Energy manager and screensaver settings of the Gnome control center are ignored.
The easiest way, however, especially if there are several users, is logging in via the gdm3 greeter.

I use Debian Testing with the default Clearlooks theme - (nvidia graphics, 32-bit kernel 2.6.38-2-bigmem) For some time i noticed Nautilus opening folders slowly. I did a gtkperf test and i was surprised that i got 12 or so seconds. Before i had ~3 seconds. Gtkperf test output with the libcairo2 version 1.10.2-6 (notice the high GtkComboBox and GtkToggleButton values):
GtkEntry - time: 0.05
GtkComboBox - time: 3.96
GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 0.82
GtkSpinButton - time: 0.21
GtkProgressBar - time: 0.11
[Code]...
This happens 100% of the time, it is not a one-time gtkperf quirk. Now, what is wrong with the vanilla libcairo2? And why hadrets version works well?

I've recently upgraded my squeeze to sid, then installed gnome shell as default window manager.
1. Gnome shell was normal until yesterday, I upgraded new packages up to date, then I cannot log into gnome shell any more (however, fallback mode is normal). It shows a sad computer screen with message "Oh no, something has gone wrong". The only thing I can do is pressing the logout button to log out.
2. Debian is running on my thinkpad T60p, and I can choose keyboard model in Gnome2, but I can't find any options in the system setting in Gnome shell to change keyboard layout for model IBM T60/R60.

I have installed the fglrx driver from "Hardware Drivers" and it runs fine, until I launch gnome3 or gnome-shell, it then just locks X (its not hard locked, I can CTRL + ALT + 2/3 etc out) but I cant do anything else.
If I use the mesa / xorg driver its fine.
The trouble is I play one game, and I need the fglrx driver for that game, the mesa one corrupts the 3d engine
It wouldnt be a pain, but i am one of the few who seems to find gnome-shell an improvement, and I get really frustrated when it wont work.
Any idea's on what I can try, other than hopfully having a working system when ATI launches the 10.10 driver on its website (although the leaked rc had the same issue) I only recently got a ATI card so I am pretty new when dealing with the ATI cat's.

I've just installed debian testing on my computer (netinst AKA basic shell version). Now, how do I do a minimal gnome install? Minimal means, I don't need libreoffice or any extra bloat. However, I do want nautilus, gnome-settings-daemon and networkmanager (and of course, firefox!).
Also, is audio included or not in gnome-shell?
If I just install the gnome-shell package (with --no-install-recommends package), will it pull in gdm, Xorg, etc. or do I have to install them separately? Also, need to confirm whether my sources.list is properly set or not:
Code: Select alldeb http://ftp.security.debian.org/debian/ stretch main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main

Is there any way I can switch my desktop shell from unity to, say, gnome-shell? I can switch using other console shell I like (bash, csh, fish, etc.). Assume that there is a stable alternative desktop shell, I should be able to choose, too.
(For console shell, we goes to /etc/passwd. But for desktop, I can't find the way to config.)

I've got a Lenny system on a quad core system with 4GB of ram. Currently Linux www 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 25 02:05:44 UTC 2010 x86_64
I've had it for a couple of years, and its been fine, very fast and reliable.
Lately, its got a problem: after its been running for a day or two, access using SSH, or TLS/HTTPS gets really slow. Painfully slow. A reboot returns the system to normal fast operation.
I can't think of anything that has changed, other than I got a new SSL cert and installed it.
The system is mostly a vanity domain server, with Apache HTTPD running a half dozen very low volume services. Its running bind9, mysql, and a few other things, nothing big, nothing that would load down a quad core with lots of ram. The disk is only 14% used.

I got a nice Christmas gift, a Westinghouse 42" TV/Monitor, and it works great with Ubuntu 10.10. The one problem I have is watching Hulu movies on it. When I go to full screen mode, the digital image slows and get blocky. When I check the settings, it is telling me I have a 32" not a 42" and there is no way to change it. It does tell me I have a Westinghouse. I also have a Roku and I believe it has a Linux OS on it and it works great

A few months back I performed a routine aptitude upgrade on a Squeeze installation on a DELL Vostro desktop. My eth0 upload speed is now very bad although download speed is good. I suspect that it could be related to my other problem [URL] which was caused by the OS enabling noveau driver instead of the installed NVIDIA proprietary drivers.
dmesg says:
eth0: Tigon3 [partno(BCM57788) rev 577880001] (PCI Express) MAC address 00:26:2d:23:a0:a5
eth0: attached PHY driver [Broadcom BCM57780] (mii_bus:phy_address=300:01)
eth0: RXcsums[1] LinkChgREG[0] MIrq[0] ASF[0] TSOcap[1]
eth0: dma_rwctrl[76180000] dma_mask[64-bit]
Where do I start to troubleshoot?

I have small problem with GNOME in Wheezy (trying it out just for fun). Whenever I start GNOME Shell and open any window, I get only blue color where windows should be. Entire window is just blue. Shell starts fine. GNOME Classic starts and works well too, even better than MATE in Jessie. My graphics card is old NVidia GeForce MX 440 8x AGP. I suspect it is causing problems.
Kernel is Wheezy's 3.2.
Found this: [URL] ....
I'm afraid I can't use GNOME Shell in Wheezy. Might try Jessie's version instead.

I have two mice, both are three button (left, right and middle) with scroll, one PS/2 and one wireless. The wireless is working properly and the PS/2 is not. The right button, the middle button and the scroll do not work.# X -configure has detected only one, which one? Do i need to put another Section Mouse1 for the second mouse? Why do i have on the Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7" so many buttons? From what i searched it should have been Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" (that's for the scroll button, up and down).
Running Squeeze stable.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I need to get it straight. I've been reading and trying to find out more about these three new desktop environments, but still am rather confused. I have had Unity on my netbook for a couple of months now and know it inside out (more or less by now). The problem is: what is the main difference between Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell?
To my understanding Gnome 3 will be a continuation of the panelled Gnome we are so used to? But then I read the panels will be gone forever, so I'm confused again Gnome Shell is somewhat similar-looking to Unity, but I haven't had a chance to try it properly yet.

I have Linux debian 7.7.0 i386-amd64 under VBox 4.3.20 and here is the problem:::
When I open the menu from Linux's top-right corner and click SHUT DOWN..., it shows the dialog with choices, and that Linux guest will automatically shutdown after 60 seconds and I need to change that delay value to 3 seconds. Of course I could just re-click Shut Down -button again, but I don't want to do it. Period.
By Googling I found these "instructions" for UBUNTU:
None of this worked on my 13.04 system. In the end I re-compiled gnome-session.
In gsm_shell.c and gsm_logout_dialog.c change #define AUTOMATIC_ACTION_TIMEOUT from 60 to 5

I have a problem with my 64-bit version of Debian Linux Lenny. I have to run alsaconf every time I boot into the machine. I have tried to run this command followed by alsaclt store. It was no help, I still have to run the command every time to get sound, which makes it very annoying. Anybody know what configuration file I should be looking at, and what I should be changing. If you need a print out of any of my configuration files, just let me know what they are and where they are and I will post them. The sound was working fine for the longest time before, I think the whole mess started when installed KDE, E16, XFCE etc. I was trying out these new windows managers and seeing if I would like them. I don't really like them all that much as the gnome so I removed them.
