why, every time I started gnome, update-manager show me the error icon?seems like there are errors but if I lunch apt-get update or aptitude update it works great.

There has been a red circle icon with a big white bar through it in the notifications area of my panel for days now. The alt-text (is that what it's called for an icon?) says "A problem occurred when checking for the updates." When I click on the icon the update manager appears and "builds data structures" but says there are no updates available.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. Im guessing this is a bug since this didnt happen with Wheezy. When I insert a dvd data disc I do get the file manager option. Strange this is, after inserting the data disc, removing it and then reinserting the dvd-rom I see the option for file manager. How can I get the file manager option to show everytime I insert a dvd-rom? I tried to,create a new option in system setting but man is that stuff confusing.
i,want to be able to browse a dvd-rom movie/video using dolphin when i insert one. I want open with file manager to be one of the choices. I think file manager is the choice.
I've installed the GNOME Update Manager (0.68-debian.7) from the official Debian package archive. However, after checking for new packages and clicking "Install the updates", the update manager asks for rights and then just checks for new updates again. Selecting different packages didn't help either, it just checks for updates again and doesn't update anything. Has anyone experienced the same problem

When I want remove cd I click button on device but the icon is still at the desktop and in the nautilus too (in the left sidebar). I have to remove it manualy from nautilus or desktop ( option: eject ). This problem shows with packages like gnome-mount or gnome-volume-manager ot without them.

I added the icon back on the panel, but I don't think its the right one. It doesn't do the two green cicles thing when I connect my ethernet wire in. View 1 Replies View RelatedOn my laptop, I have stable installed. The original install was about two years ago, and I've just been keeping up with all of the stable updates. It is now an up to date Lenny. Over the months and years I have added several new icon themes to Gnome. I have noticed over time that several of the icon themes' icons have turned up missing. As you can see, icon themes Amaranth, Crux and Dropline Etiquette are missing their respective theme icons. The icon themes work, when selected, but the icon theme icon in the "Customize Theme" window never appears. Several of the other icon themes are the same. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the icon theme packs, but that doesn't fix it. I also have a desktop system of Debian stable with some of the same icon themes as on the laptop, but it does not have this problem. However, it is a much newer installation.
I find gnome-shell 3.14.2 becomes slugish after several days of use. This manifests in short delays on window functions, such as closing a window or opening a new one. Restarting gnome shell fixes it.I thought of trying to take a stack trace during the delay, but found 2 issues:
1) debian doesn't have gstack/pstack package ...?
2) attaching a debugger to gnome shell from gnome shell hangs it (duh) , which means I can't type the "bt" command
I have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.
Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?
I've noticed g-p-m refreshes information extremely delayed. Sometimes it takes many many minutes before it notifies me that I'm running on battery. how I can change this refresh rate? I've drained the batteries once recently believing the icon that said 89% less than a minute before the batteries were completely discharged (my battery lasts for about 15-20 minutes).

1. Leave Gnome installed, but prevent it from launching when typing startx
2. Have both X11 and my prefered default window manager (blackbox) startup when I type startx (or similar)
My ultimate goal is to leave Gnome installed but "dormant" and when I do a remote ssh -X be able to use X11 forwarding with blackbox.

So far I have just used the CLI to upgrade KDE, and I get notified of upgrades once a day, where a popup shows when new upgrades are available. However, when I push the "install upgrades" button, nothing happens. In Gnome, all I had to do was click the update notifier and click install. I am pretty confident the same is posible in KDE4. I have searched the web trying to find a solution, but I can't find anything. I am probably missing some packages. Can someone help me configure:
1. Update intervals for the KDE update manager, and
2. GUI updates for the KDE4 desktop.
In my top bar (where i also have the, bluetooth, sound time and date and so on icons) i have lost my icon to manage my network. Wired, wireless and VPN. How do i get it back?

When I travel, I would like to tell my laptop that I, as a user, am in a different time zone that what the OS may think is local. And I would like the clock on my desktop (default Gnome bar date/time display) to show the local time.
Instead, I currently have to use sudo and change the system time... (click on the clock, choose time settings, set system time -- there are no other choices given). The applet thing allows me to add other locations, but they only show up if I click on the icon, as extra times below the main one.
Am I missing something? Using the wrong app?
I am using fedora8. I suddenly noticed that the gnome-power-manager icon (battery icon) has gone missing from my panel. How can I get it back ? I donot see it in the add to panel list so it must have got uninstalled somehow, isn't it so ?

After restart the Network-Manager icon had vanished from the tool bar and was replaced by a second loudspeaker control icon. No ability to link to the internet. Starting Network-Manager from the pull-down menus did not help.Muggins Noob thought, un/re-install Network Manager. Duh! Uninstall is fine, but re-installing from the web without Network-Manager, tricky. Sadly no ethernet wire available, either wifi or GSM/3G.
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust did a recent update with Sid, and upon reboot, I noticed that the theming engine appears to be out of whack a little. I've provided a screen shot for some clarity. As you can see, some programs that open do not use the set GTK theme, but instead reverts back to default. I've also noticed that in appearances, I now get that message that says pixmap engine is required, even though I have it installed. The biggest update was to gnome 3.0.2. At the moment, it doesn't affect usability at all, and I'm hesitant to undo the updates, as things that didn't work before now works! Ahh Sid! Living life on the dangerous side I is! If anyone can provide some insight into this issue (a fix is not of high priority),

even after applying the patch from this thread [URL] my battery is still not displaying an icon and a tab is not present on the power manager. I use an ibook g3 dual usb. though i didn't restart after applying the patch as it was not mentioned to do so.

so my update manager keeps saying I have updated everything, but it won't show the new 11.04 release. I did everything the documentation says, including change the release upgrade file so its pointed to normal distro upgrades.
