Jan 29, 2010i'm run'n knoppix 6.5 (i think) from a usb stick. under 'ifconfig' it finds 'eth0', but when i put in 'iwconfig eth0' it says: 'eth0 no wireless extensions'. i've tried other linux live cd's but to no avail...interestinly enough, when i run a linux (ubuntu) live cd on my virtual pc it hooks up(?..i figure bcuz its reading from da virtual ethernet?) further more, i researched it to the conclusion that the driver is not being detected. i tried ndiswrapper (under 'puppy') but tht didnt work either ( i've downloaded the lastes version of ndiswrapper and i plan on trying it again w/ the installation disk of the wireless card). however, even in my research i've seen there seem to be a difficulty in getting this particular driver to work? (netgear wg311v3 - wireless g pci adapter) how i can over come this problem? i'm kinda new @ linux, but i like the challenge. it doesnt matter wat linux system (the responder) i'll download it. but i'm really trying to get 1 online cuz i have to learn how to work the packaging systems.

May 1, 2011I can't get on the Internet at all not even through Ethernet. (It recognized my Ethernet hardware but doesn't connect.) I got the broadcom-wl drivers from Packman and installed those and it still was a no go. I tried to get the drivers straight from Broadcom and those didn't work. I couldn't compile the source code from the Brodcom site because i could not get build installed (got make installed but build just didn't install.)

Jan 7, 2010Moving this to new topic, since it's no longer under wireless connectivity issues. [Noob Warning] I was having trouble getting Ubuntu to recognize my wireless card, as I have changed from the 3965 that came in my computer to the 4965, which added increased range and G band. Anyway, I read one of the threads on here, and this was the advice given:

Feb 8, 2010just installed ubuntu but it doesn't recognise my wireless card. I'm running an emachines g720. Ive tried looking through some previous posts but the terminal thing frightens me to death really.I've tried looking through the idiots guide but i'm afraid i'm a better idiot than that.

May 19, 2011Today I deleted Windows on my Dell Latitude D610 and instead installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (I had a cd with 10.04 on it from when I installed it on my desktop a year ago). Everything runs fine except I can't get the wifi to work, and it won't recognize the driver either, actually it doesn't recognize any drivers.

Aug 2, 2010I just did a new install of slack 13.1 and i cant seem to be able to get my wireless card up. my system is a new ish dell laptop,a vostro 3700 to be honest im not even really sure where to start here. if i ifconfig i only get my ethernet and my loopback and if i "iwconfig" i just get told that i have no wireless extensions. yeah not sure what else to add.

Mar 6, 2010I have a problem with recognising my mobile phone's memory card in Ubuntu 9.10. When I plug the phone in it starts the mass storage mode, but nothing happens in the PC. I suspect that I may have deleted phone's icon from the desktop, and I don't know how to bring it back. Mar 26, 2010So the only experience I have with Linux is all from Ubuntu, and I just spontaneously decided that I needed a change...two days later my triple boot Macbook Pro got slimmed down to a dual boot OSX/OpenSUSE 11.2 machine. But there are some general problems, and I have absolutely no idea how to solve them. First, wireless isn't recognized at all...there isn't even a space for wireless connections. Second, I haven't been able to get compiz to work yet, and I can only suspect that the system doesn't recognize my video card, or the driver isn't installed. Yet again, no idea how to fix this.

I have installed the Debian squeeze testing version and since when I installed the system it didn't recognize my ethernet card, I could only install what is in the installation CD1. Now I have a nice looking Debian system but very simple with a lot of necessary packages or whatever missing (I don't even have the update manager). Is there some way that I could launch an automatic installation of content in the rest CDs from internet?
Debian Hardware :: ALSA Won't Recognize Sound Card?
Jan 6, 2011I know sound is a recurring issue around here, but I can't find any posts/FAQs that address my particular problem.
Here it goes: When I first installed ALSA, I unsurprisingly had no sound. OK, no big deal, I'll just un-install and re-install ALSA and see if that helps. No, instead ALSA won't even recognize my card.
lspci shows:

Debian Hardware :: How To Get Squeeze To Recognize Sound Card Again
Aug 27, 2011I've been using Debian 6 on my HP G62-a18SA laptop since March this year. Post installation I was getting sound through the headphones but not through the speakers. To rectify this I followed the instructions at wiki.debian.org/ALSA and installed the Realtek HD Audio Codec Driver, cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec having revealed that the audio codec was a Realtek ID 270. This gave me sound through both headphones and speakers. A couple of days ago (after not using the laptop for several weeks), I was surprised to find that I had no sound at all, nothing from the speakers and nothing from the headphones. I have done some googling and here are the outputs from several commands I came across, from which it would appear that Debian has now "lost" my soundcard:

Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

Debian Hardware :: System Does Not Recognize External Monitor Via HDMI
Jun 30, 2014Ok so I just installed Debian 7.5 on my laptop and encountered several problems.
First off was the problem with GNOME 3, GNOME 3 failed to load.
Second problem was that the system does not recognize an external monitor via hdmi. Via VGA I do not know do not have a cable to try it out.
Third problem was that my wireless was no recognized.

Before I had Fedora, but only cuz all the devices were recognized by default, for a while now I wanted to switch over to Debian but as I came to relize my hardware for some reason is not working.

Jul 14, 2010I just got myself a Dell Inspiron 1440. And decided to install my favorite distro Debian. I got the installation to go with no issue and all seems to be working fine. However the wireless isn't working. NetworkManager doesnt even detect a wireless card. I followed the instructions here and installed the b43-fwcutter and then issued the modprobe b43 and modprobe b43legacy commands. Then I issued the iwconfig command and this was the output.
